From the Editor So Little Time
We here at Las Vegas Magazine have a luxury you, the Las Vegas tourist, do not: We live here year-round, meaning we have all the time in the world to explore all this city has to offer. You, on the other hand, are likely here for only a week, a few days, or a few hours. You have to try to squeeze as much fun out of Las Vegas as is possible in the short time you have. Luckily, you have Las Vegas Magazine to help you plan that experience. And this week’s cover feature is designed with that in mind. Writer Alex Haase has compiled an exhaustive list of the Strip’s great graband-go eats (“Why Wait?, p. 24). As you scramble from location to location, trying to see as much as you can before heading home, you may not have time to sit down and enjoy a meal. Check out this feature for the best ways to eat quick—and, in most cases, cheap! What could be better? Glad you asked! In addition to great food advice, we’ve compiled another guide for cocktail lovers, but this time with a bit of a twist. Associate editor Kiko Miyasato has rounded up some off-the-beaten-path options where you’ll be surprised to find your favorite libation (“9 Unexpected Spots for Cocktails,” p. 20). And as if that isn’t enough, we’ve also gathered up some of the best bars and lounges where you can bask in the amazing weather while having
fun with friends (“Enjoy a Drink Outside,” p. 17). Looking for some great entertainment? Editor at large Brock Radke introduces you to one of the hardest-working dancers on the Las Vegas Strip: Shelby Jordan, who’s working in not one but two shows: MJ Live at The STRAT and “X” Country at Harrah’s. His Q&A with her (“Keeping on Her Toes,” p. 22) is both a look at the life of an entertainer and an examination of the toll COVID-19 took on the industry. Have you been to Area15 yet? Trust us, this is a must-visit for anyone remotely interested in the weird and wonderful. And this week’s installment of our ongoing Friends with Benefits feature gives you a great excuse to go. Kiko Miyasato spotlights Steven Funkhouser, the general manager of Emporium at Area15 ( p. 16). His place is so cool, and after reading about Steve, go have some fun there and introduce yourself. Chef celebrates his Korean heritage at Park MGM restaurant Is there a more likable chef on the Las Vegas Strip than Roy Choi? From his ground-breaking food truck, Kogi, to his numerous restaurants throughout California and his numerous television shows, Choi is just everywhere at the moment, and has helped introduce numerous cuisine styles to the masses, but they all have one thing in common: they’re uncomplicated and just plain fun! And nowhere is this concept more apparent than at his Las Vegas restaurant, Best Friend at Park MGM. Best Friend’s menu is a nod to Choi’s Korean heritage, and just in case you weren’t sure Choi

is dedicated to making this experience as fun as possible, just take a look at some of his menu titles. Start with “Dranks,” which include a highball with Suntori Toki blended whiskey, fancy soda water and citrus, and the Salty Dog, featuring Ketel One Botanical Rose and Grapefruit vodka, grapefruit and pink peppercorn. (There’s also an extensive wine and beer list.) Then move over to “Vegas Sh*t,” which includes (obviously) options found only on the Las Vegas Strip. Choose from a dry-aged tomahawk, served with gochujang maître d’hotel butter, or the grilled whole fish, served with jalapeño ponzu and garlic veggies.
There’s also a terrific barbecue menu, with kalbi (bone-in short rib), a vegetable combo featuring baby bok, carrots and long beans, spicy pork served with gochujang and sesame, and soy-marinated garlic chicken. If you’re having a tough time deciding where to start here, you might want to opt for the Chef Menu ($55 per person), which includes banchan (pictured above), kogi tacos, slippery shrimp, kimchi fried rice, barbecue spicy pork belly or garlic chicken, barbecue bulgogi ribeye or kalbi, and either a date cake or lemon pie. A Fine French Fête There’s a quaint French bistro tucked away on the level just above Aria’s casino floor. While quaint, the space is beautifully designed—dark woods, leathers and etched glass windows throughout immediately transport guests to what feels like a hidden gem in Paris. Bardot Brasserie is world-renowned chef Michael Mina’s foray into the classic French cuisine realm—and he’s put together a menu of classic French comfort foods and given them his special Mina touch. Foie gras and le fromage, a chef’s selection of cheeses, are a perfect way to get the table started. Your party might also want to try the popular prime steak tartare, a favorite among frequent guests, served with egg yolk and fresh-cut potato chips. Do Something Grand
Tours offer options for every mode of travel If you want to see the sights, and you want someone else to do the driving (or the flying), then a guided tour is what you want. Gray Line offer a range of tours throughout the Southwest that depart right from Vegas. Possibly the most famous attraction in the Southwest is the Grand Canyon, and it is worth taking a day to experience. From Las Vegas, choose from comfortable tours to either the West Rim or the South Rim. Luxury bus tours are pretty much all-day affairs, and you’ll get to experience some of the most iconic, breathtaking views from

both locales. For both, you’ll get hotel pick-up and drop-off. The West Rim tour takes you to the Skywalk, a glass bridge that actually hangs out over the canyon. It really tests your mettle. You’ll also see Guano Point, Eagle Point and Hualapai Ranch. Another option for the West Rim adds in a helicopter flight and pontoon boat ride as well. The South Rim tour takes you into the national monument, with stops at the famous lodge, the visitor’s center and other cool sights. You can also do this with a luxury limo van, and a recent option lets you explore the canyon in a Hummer.
One of the neatest things about Gray Line’s Grand Canyon tours are how many different experiences you can pack into one day, from the bus ride with rugged desert views to helicopter flights to let you see the sights from the air. And if you don’t want to dedicate an entire day, book the four-and-a-half hour tour to Hoover Dam by luxury bus, and choose one with a helicopter flight for even more thrills and a bird’s-eye view of the famous structure and enormous Lake Mead. Gray Line even offers tours to Laughlin and to the Valley of Fire if you’ve already seen the Grand Canyon. –Nina King

It really is a special Las Vegas moment when you get dressed up and dine at Picasso. Situated lakeside, with an outdoor patio so guests can dine while watching the famed Bellagio fountains show, this beautiful restaurant has so many special parts that make up a truly divine whole. If you’re a fan of the artist, this place houses some of his most striking pieces. The stunning décor includes white linen tablecloths, dramatic drapery, and floor-to-ceiling windows with sweeping views of the lake. And famed executive chef Julian Serrano’s menu is inspired by the regional cuisine of Spain and France. Recipes dress up meats like quail, roasted pigeon, fallow deer and lamb. Pescatarians will delight in Scottish salmon, U-10 day boat scallops, poached Maine lobster, poached oysters and the popular sautéed filet of black bass, served with an Spanish pistu and olive tapenade. Steak lovers can slide the fork and knife into Japanese wagyu filet mignon. Glove Love Yes, Michael Jackson is a polarizing figure. No one is disputing that. But the impact of his art on so many things—fashion, dancing and, of course, music—is also indisputable. It’s nearly impossible to avoid The Gloved One’s influence in modern entertainment; countless artists acknowledge how they owe their careers to his inspiration. Another indisputable fact: Las Vegas loves Michael Jackson tribute shows. Before the pandemic shutdown, there were no
fewer than four iterations of the King of Pop along the Strip. And one of them, MJ Live, is back and delivering killer versions of most of his classics. It’s all due to the magic of Jalles Franca, who inhabits the moves, spirit and even voice of the man and the legend. He helped put together the menu, which includes local draft beers and a large liquor selection, and even created the bar’s craft draft cocktails. There are four choices, like the Sonic Boom Old-Fashioned, mixed with Templeton rye whiskey, Luxardo Maraschino liqueur, Solerno blood orange liqueur and cherry bark vanilla bitters. All the craft draft cocktails are made daily—and are so popular, multiple kegs are drained each night. –KM

Steven Funkhouser
General manager is on top of his game Steven Funkhouser just opened Emporium at Area15 a few months ago, but he’s played a supporting role in the company for more than four years. Before he moved to Las Vegas, the general manager helped launch the brand’s San Francisco and Berkeley, Calif., locations. Funkhouser has a long history in the food and beverage industry, starting off as a bartender for various dive bars around the City by the Bay, eventually graduating to managing huge nightclubs. But in 2017 he switched it up and decided to join Emporium, a company that creates kid-like fun for adults in the form of an arcade bar. “We like to be a lot of things besides just being a place for video and classic games,” Funkhouser says. “We also try bringing a lot of other things to the table. We do a lot of events, music, DJs—it’s a very lively atmosphere. We try to be a fun place from all aspects. We try to give a little something to everyone. Emporium’s
goal is to be accessible with a diverse crowd. It’s a high-energy vibe but laid-back—a place where it’s an alternative to a nightclub.” As the general manager, Funkhouser helped build Emporium’s new location, its sixth, from the ground up. There was nothing but empty walls and construction, and now the two-story space is packed with impressive local art, video games, classic pinball machines and a craft cocktail bar. “I’m a very active person, I would never do well behind a desk,” he says. “I’ve always liked walking around, being social, talking with people. As a manager, I’m always getting to know my guests, being out in the scene. And I’ve always been a manager willing to do anything—I don’t mind getting my hands dirty and helping out. When you have a busy night, you’re the director, and a great manager is directing everything and paying attention to every little detail, and that makes a difference.” –Kiko Miyasato

These hot spots for cocktails come with open-air spaces Spring is the time of year when Vegas weather is a roll of the dice, but odds are you’re in for several warm-weather days during your stay. And there’s no better way to enjoy a sunny afternoon on the Strip than by relaxing on a patio with an ice-cold drink. Lucky for you, options abound. Beer Park at Paris is a rooftop bar that feels like a friend’s backyard party, except it’s on the Strip. Enjoy a cool breeze and chill out with a frosty Budweiser (or your choice of more than 100 beers). And if you’re a sports fan, fix your eyes on a high-def TV and enjoy a game. Head downtown and admire the legacy of Vegas greats like Howard Hughes and Benny Binion at Legacy Club at Circa, but the beautiful outdoor terrace is worth equal praise.
Intimate seating, fire pits and an unparalleled view of the Strip pair well with a menu of classic cocktails. While downtown, also hit up local brewery Crafthaus, one of the city’s finest, which recently expanded its outdoor patio, which makes for an awesome hang. Order the Silver State Blonde Ale or the Zitrone Sour to perfectly complement the beautiful weather. Try Topgolf Las Vegas—more than just a fancy driving range, it’s an entire entertainment complex that includes five bars. So even if you stink at golf, you can still sit back, enjoy the view, sip on a refreshing cocktail and watch your friends slay some golf balls. If the weather’s nice, kick it on the patio at PBR Rock Bar & Grill at Miracle Mile Shops and order the Porch Pounder.

Not only will it take you forever to polish off the punch bowl-sized cocktail (served in 50- and 100-ounce bowls), it’ll get you schwasted. The quaint patio at Tom’s Urban at New York-New York is lit with string lights and has a great view of the foot traffic along the faux Brooklyn Bridge, which makes it feel similar to a hip NYC restaurant. Standout cocktails include the rye-based Tom’s Smash, but if you want a cold beer, go for the novelty 40-ounce stein. Makers & Finders (702.586.8255) is just as loved for its coffee drinks as for its innovative Latin cuisine, a soulful menu that now includes a breakfast empanada skillet, Spanish cioppino with octopus, shrimp, calamari and scallops, and the ranchero burger with pork belly and cilantro-lime crema. M&F has a Main Street location in downtown Las Vegas as well. One of the Summerlin area’s most beloved Thai eateries just expanded into a new, larger location very close to its original site. Nittaya’s Secret Kitchen (702.360.8885) near the corner of West Lake Mead and Rampart Boulevards now has a beautifully expansive dining room and kitchen while its homey, balanced cuisine—like crispy pork belly, coconut shrimp and kao soi curry noodles—feels just as exclusive and special as it always has. Grab-and-go dining options abound in Las Vegas When exploring Vegas, there’s so much to see and do that it’s easy to get lost in excitement, lose track of time and forget to eat. But once hunger strikes, and you find there’s no time for a sit-down meal, there are several grab-and-go dining options around the Strip that are quick, delicious and satiating. So don’t settle for sad-looking chicken nuggets and limp french fries—step up your meals!
Breakfast exists in Las Vegas, but it’s not a priority. And if you’re up late partying on the Strip, you’ll probably sleep in and miss the window for that morning meal. But if you’re an early bird, head to Brioche by Guy Savoy at Paris or Caesars Palace, a tiny spot that serves coffee, tea and Savoy’s signature pastries, some of which are filled with almond and candied fruit, Nutella and banana and more. If you’re seeking something savory, order a ham and cheese croissant or a cheddar and broccoli quiche.
Once lunchtime rolls around, the grab-and-go options abound, and you can find a

quick lunch spot nearly anywhere on the Strip. Chef David Chang’s Moon Palace at The Palazzo serves up Tastys (tiny White Castle-esque hamburger sliders made of brisket and short rib and sandwiched between Hawaiian rolls), Hot Chips (crispy potato chips) and Half Dips (two pancakes filled with marshmallow and half-dipped into chocolate). It’s simple and delicious. But if you want a more traditional burger, stop by Shake Shack at New York-New York, the East Coast rival of In-N-Out Burger. While the menu offers delectable items like chicken nuggets and the ’Shroom burger, the classic ShackBurger is never a letdown. Don’t forget crinkle-cut fries and some ShackSauce!

My uncle was a property owner and developer … and when I was a kid, I used to spend the summers helping him out.” After years in real estate on the East Coast, Vaknin brought his talents to Las Vegas to work with high-rise condos in the KRE Capital portfolio, including The Ogden and Juhl in Downtown Las Vegas and One Las Vegas on the south Strip. You may notice some guests (including yourself) headed straight to the elevators. That’s because contactless check-in is no longer a thing of the future. At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
Pools are open again, but operations are significantly different from before. For example, at Wet Republic at MGM Grand and Liquid at Aria, reservations will be required for all hotel and nonhotel guests, and VIP sections will be separated to allow for social distancing. In addition, rigorous cleaning protocols will be implemented.
What a difference a year makes! In 2020, there was little, if any, attendance allowed at sporting events across the country (and none whatsoever in Las Vegas sports venues once the shutdown of the Strip was announced). Now, not only are your favorite teams back, you can buy tickets! And popcorn! And beer! For example, the Vegas Golden Knights can now allow up to 9,000 fans at T-Mobile Arena. Just make sure to be proactive in buying your ticket—demand is bound to be very high!
Experiences will vary depending on venue, but every effort is made to make the experience as safe as possible. For example, at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort, you can now access a digital store directory on your phone. There’s also a digital coupon book with nearly 50 offers, which you can access by going to miraclemileshopslv.com. Another digital assist is available from Jules, the retail center’s chatbot, and she can be reached via text message, Facebook Messenger or the retail center’s website. And finally, QR codes make dining easy, as you can see the entire menu on your phone.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.
The show experience will differ widely, depending on the venue. For example, Absinthe at Caesars Palace, which is performed in a tent, is currently not in the round. Rather, the audience faces one side of the theater, with the action taking place across from them. It has a 660-seat capacity, but as of press time offers 180 seats per show. And, of course, everyone is required to wear a mask, audience members and performers included. Temperature checks are still mandatory before entering, and the venue is sanitized before and after every performance. You can learn more about every show by calling the box office.
Most restaurants require reservations, although not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have 6 feet between them. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers. Bars will also be spacing patrons’ parties 6 feet apart.

Although attractions in Vegas have really rebounded, sanitation is high. Social distancing is evident, with seemingly omnipresent 6-foot markers, like Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens. For instance, on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.
Nightclubs have returned, but the usual operations have significantly changed. For example, at Omnia at Caesars Palace and Hakkasan at MGM Grand, touchless menus are now the norm via scannable QR codes, and the venues are operated as lounges, with social distancing and mask-wearing enforced.
Las Vegas is getting closer and closer to full operation, but your safety is still the top priority. Here are few more things you should know about efforts to make you as safe as possible. Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down, and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find
