From the Editor A Really Hard Choice
The staff of Las Vegas Magazine share one thing in common: We’ve all lived in the Las Vegas Valley for many years, and we’re proud to call this our home. And as long-standing residents, we’re often asked what our favorite thing is about Las Vegas. Unfortunately, that’s not at all easy to answer. The best answer we can give is, “Where do we start?” You’ll get a sense of how difficult a decision that is once you start planning your vacation here. After all, in addition to the Las Vegas Strip, arguably the most exciting destination in the world, there’s all the ancillary activity surrounding Southern Nevada: Grand Canyon, Lake Mead, Brianhead and Red Rock Conservation Area, to name just a few. Luckily, Las Vegas Magazine is here to help make those tough decisions. This week’s issue features a little bit of everything you’ll want to experience, starting with food. If you’re like us, you’re probably on a budget, yet you still want to sample some of the city’s finest flavors. Bringing the Laughs Back Although COVID-19 vaccines are available to most Americans, one thing that’s still in short supply in this country is laughter. And that’s OK, because the last year hasn’t offered much to laugh at, but Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club in Las Vegas is looking to turn that around.

Not only does the show feature some of the funniest comedians around, Garrett appears often, and you’ll have the chance to catch him this week on April 11, along with Sam Fedele and Michael Yo, and on April 15-18, where he’ll be joined by Eddie Iff t and Heath Harmison. Since returning to the stage, Garrett
has poked fun at coronavirus by performing a few jokes in a hazmat suit, and you can likely expect more jokes related to COVID. And although the intimate club has moved to MGM’s Studio A & B Ballrooms to accommodate existing restrictions, it’s still a suitable space for laughs. –Alex Haase

French Connection Get a taste of the French bistro life with Favorite Bistro at The Linq Promenade. Head in for weekend brunch or for any other meal. Of course, a drink is a perfect place to start, and the spiked milkshakes and smoothies will whet that appetite. Brunch is especially fun, with such offerings as a croque monsieur—glorious ham and Swiss with béchamel sauce. Really, though, any time of day is good here. That perennial favorite, avocado toast, gets a boost with a poached egg, while that other perennial item, escargots Bourgogne, comes with garlic herb butter. The Hangover burger takes the basic idea burger and runs with it, piling Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, cheese sauce, bacon, a sunny-side up egg and several condiments on a bun with a half-pound Black Angus patty. There’s also a wonderful Niçoise salad with seared yellowfin tuna and a next-level barbecue chicken pizza. Other good options are the grilled salmon, the Le Petit New York strip steak and a cheese and charcuterie plate (you might want to share, even if it goes against everything you believe in). –Nina King

Start Your Engines! The buzz from this year’s NASCAR events might have not worn off yet. If that’s the case, get your racing fix in a safe, friendly environment at Pole Position Raceway. Over the last year, you’ve probably engaged in retail therapy online, but now that Las Vegas is reopening, you can do all that shopping in person, and The Grand Canal Shoppes is one of the best places in town to indulge yourself. Not only will the cobbled walkways, cafés and gondoliers make you feel like you’re in a real Italian marketplace, but the offerings will affirm that you’re shopping in a retail mecca. Art gallery offers huge space for viewing Have you been wanting to head to the museum for ages now, and the online exhibits just aren’t cutting it? Well, wander through Las Vegas’ newest art museum, The Park West Gallery. This outpost of the respected New York art dealer recently opened in The Forum Shops at Caesars, bringing a huge mix of artists and genres to the space. “Everything in Vegas has to be bigger, better, and more beautiful than anywhere on Earth,” said Park West founder and CEO Albert Scaglione in a press release. “Our collection at the Park West Museum & Gallery Las Vegas will be second to none, with everything from emerging

artists to one-of-a-kind paintings by Renoir, Chagall, Picasso, and more. There’s no charge for admission and we can’t wait for tourists and locals alike to experience these fantastic works of art in person.” There really is something for everyone in the 7,000-square-foot space, including a curated rotating exhibit. The current one, From Renoir to Kostabi, looks at different types of mediums and artists from several centuries, such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Marcel Mouly and Mark Kostabi. On display are works from all those artists, plus 15th-century illuminated manuscripts.
And that curated exhibit is only a small part of the sheer amount of art you’ll find in this gallery; about 1,000 pieces are on display. Best of all? All that other art is for sale, with prices ranging from the hundreds of thousands of dollars to the millions. Park West actually owns the largest collection of Pablo Picasso ceramic pieces in the world. Perennial Vegas fave Michael Godard’s irreverent pieces depicting inebriated olives, frogs and other characters with all sorts of backgrounds are also available. Street Market Smart The newest concept to hit The Cosmopolitan’s Block 16 Urban Food Hall is Bang Bar by Momofuko from chef David Chang, which just opened on April 1. The eatery focuses on grab-and-go food and serves up two types of wraps, the U wrap and the Fold-Up wrap, both created with the signature bang bread. They are griddled and stuffed with schwarmastyle, spit-roasted meats (spicy pork or teriyaki chicken) or spicy eggplant. You can also get those options in the rice bowl with pickled onion and Bang Sauce. And side dishes like stewed chickpeas, bean salad or pickled shishito peppers will make sure you don’t leave wanting. The spicy eggplant is also offered as a side. On the beverage side, enjoy either cocktails like the blood orange Negroni and yuzu lemonade or draft beers. Bang Bar is inspired by the New York original, which has been a hit ever since it opened in 2018, with lines stretching for days. The Time Is Right
Comedy Gold Mime Just as everything else is changing in a post-pandemic Las Vegas, so is Tape Face’s show at Harrah’s. He’s in a much larger theater now (the Harrah’s Theater rather than his more intimate House of Tape), and while most of the show he will be silent, wearing his trademark piece of tape over his mouth, at the beginning of each show, he will speak, hosting a Q&A with the audience before every show.

He’s also added a new character to his show: A narrator, who comments on the action onstage to hilarious effect. But for those who remember Tape Face’s show as it used to be, don’t worry. Dining Done Right
Aria restaurant is an experience from start to finish One of the outstanding things about dining on the Las Vegas Strip is that, in many instances, it’s an experience, and this is so true with one restaurant in particular—Catch. From the moment you lay eyes on the entrance, right off the hotel’s grand lobby, you know you’re in for something special. You start by walking through an 80-foot-long, tunnel-like pergola blossoming with a rainbow-colored explosion of florals, plants and lights (this spot has had so many selfie moments that its hashtag has thousands of posts on Instagram). The tunnel leads into a multiroom dining space, where guests can take a seat at the main bar and spacious, loungelike front room or take it more upscale with a roomy booth in the main

dining room, adorned with a ginormous, re-created Mediterranean olive tree lit up with huge, glowing bulbs. For an extra special experience, ask to book one of the birdcage booths. Now, on to the menu, because the food is just as eye-popping and deliciously fun as the space. The restaurant’s modus operandi when it comes to food is taking the yummiest parts of Asian cuisine and inventively marrying them with seafood, sushi and steak dishes (with some tasty vegetarian options, too). Starters that satisfy include the crunchy rice cakes that look like little loaves of bread, the hellfire roll with spicy tuna, pear and balsamic, and the ever-popular Catch roll, made with crab, salmon and a specially made miso honey
sauce. Hot dishes that deserve some attention include the wagyu gyoza, filet skewers, king crab tempura and the popular A5 Japanese Miyazaki wagyu, thinly sliced and cooked at the table on a signature hot stone. For main dish options, Catch delivers a bounty of seafood like Cantonese lobster, sautéed wildcaught snapper and herb-roasted branzino. For turf lovers, a New York strip or filet will satisfy (or share with your sweetie the gargantuan 36-ounce tomahawk). Finish off the night with the visually cool and deliciously chocolatey Hit Me chocolate cake, a stack of dulce de leche ice cream, brownie and devil’s food cake, topped with a Klondike bar and drizzled with chocolate syrup. –Kiko Miyasato

Splash Dance Close your eyes and think of Las Vegas. What are some of the images that come to mind? Maybe you’ll think of Elvis, showgirls, one-armed bandits or glitz and glam, but it’s likely that one of the first things you’ll visualize is the iconic Fountains of Bellagio, which is often featured in film, television and ad campaigns. Not only is it an elegant water show and a beautiful sight to see, but it’s also an experience. As the water shoots into the sky and sways, it’s meticulously choreographed to songs by classic Vegas entertainers, such as “Viva Las Vegas” by Elvis Presley and “Luck Be a Lady” by Frank Sinatra. But the Fountains’ repertoire includes more than 20 songs, so if you hang around for a couple of viewings, you’ll never see the same show twice. Another perk: Since it’s somewhat the epicenter of Vegas experiences, the Fountains attracts all sorts of interesting characters. So while you watch the water dance, you might also be able to watch a Michael Jackson impersonator moonwalk along the sidewalk. Day Tripping If you’re looking to experience a bit of nature during your Vegas vacation, Gray Line offers several sightseeing tours in Nevada and beyond. Take the half-day tour of the Hoover Dam, where you’ll experience awesome views of the dam and Lake Mead. Other tours include quick trips to the Valley of Fire and Death Valley. But if you want to really get away, hop into a Mercedes Sprinter and head to the West Rim of the Grand Canyon. A Sailing Success Boathouse Asian Eatery is amazing in the way it combines Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese cuisines in delicious and inventive ways. A passion for famous ship leads to dream job Have you ever gone after your dream job and actually got it? Well, Kaylee Jukich-Fish did. When the Montana native moved to Las Vegas in 2019 to attend UNLV to study criminal justice and couples and family therapy, she needed a job. “Ever since I was a little kid I’ve always been fascinated with Titanic,” she says. “I used to leave sticky notes around the house for my dad to find with questions on them about Titanic. And it just kind of escalated from there.” Yes, her interest in the ill-fated tale became a lifelong passion, and there was only one place she wanted to work when she moved to town—at Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at Luxor. Jukich-Fish ended up landing the job and joined the exhibition as an artifact specialist in October of that year. “I get to answer questions people have about Titanic,” she says. “I get to explain some of the stories behind the artifacts, the stories about the passengers. I basically
get to walk around and talk about my favorite thing.” Some of her favorite things about the exhibition include the Departure Room, the very first room guests come upon. “It just feels really happy because you get to learn this grand idea that these people had about the most luxurious ship in the world and the three-year process it took to build, and you see the artifacts to build it,” Jukich-Fish explains. “It’s when everyone was happy and excited about it.” And when we say Jukich-Fish knows her Titanic history, she knows her Titanic history. For her and the other artifact specialists—they call each other “Titaniacs”—the subject is a passion. So much so that Jukich-Fish started her own TikTok on all things Titanic (check it out at @kjfish with almost 50,000 subscribers). “Titanic—it’s always been a part of my life and it always will be,” she says. “This is my passion, and this is my dream job.” –Kiko Miyasato

Pool season is back, even if it operates a little differently The warm weather has moved into Las Vegas, and that means pool season is in full swing—although that might be a little less swing, so to speak. With post-pandemic rules still in order, partying at pool clubs looks a little different these days—no venues packed like sardines and no huge parties—but that doesn’t mean guests 21 and over still can’t enjoy a fun day in the sun! For all Caesars properties, nonhotel guests must call ahead and make a reservation for either a daybed or cabana in order to gain access to pool clubs like the laid-back, intimate Influence, The Pool at The Linq Hotel. Cabanas here are some of the biggest, and daybeds include lily pad-type beds in the shallow parts of the water. The GO Pool dayclub at Flamingo offers a huge tropical landscape and daybeds dotted through-
out the landscape, as well as plenty of cabana options. For an upscale experience, hit up Venus Pool + Lounge at Caesars Palace. This pool club also houses some of the biggest cabanas with little patios and lounge chairs and misters to keep guests cool. MGM Resorts International properties also require nonhotel guests to book a cabana or daybed for entrance. Ultimate dayclub Wet Republic at MGM Grand is back this season, and while the party-on-steroids vibe isn’t back, guests can still enjoy this recently redesigned space with plenty of cabanas, not to mention spacious bungalows with private dipping pools. Another pool club with private dipping pools for cabana guests is Liquid Pool Lounge at Aria, a more intimate experience but with a jet set,

upscale European-style vibe. Daylight Beach at Mandalay Bay is one of the bigger pool clubs, with a Mediterranean beachside vibe and a nearly 5,000-square-foot main pool (and additional pools for VIP cabana guests). The resident DJs of hot spot nightclub Marquee bring their talents poolside to The Cosmopolitan’s 21-and-over The Pool Marquee. Nonhotel guests must book a cabana and daybed here as well. But the restaurant’s return was welcomed with such enthusiasm, it quickly returned to a five-night schedule. On the north end at The STRAT, PT’s Wings & Sports (702.380.7777) continues to establish itself as one of the best places on the Strip to catch the game and enjoy elite bar food. It recently introduced some Canadian-inspired dishes available during Vegas Golden Knights games throughout the NHL season. The PT’s Power Play box includes cheese curd-covered poutine, beaver tails (fried dough served with cinnamon, sugar and maple butter), cheese sliders, two pounds of chicken wings and more, enough to satisfy any sporting appetite. If you’re ready to get off the main drag and discover something new in the neighborhood, cruise east on Flamingo Road until you get to Tortas Ahogadas Y Birria el Chacho (702.832.2683), a small but mighty Mexican eatery building almost instant buzz for its two specialties: a deliciously authentic rendition of the Guadalajaran staple, the torta ahogada, a roasted pork sandwich drowned in tomato-and-chile sauce; and rich, long-simmered beef birria, available as a stew or in cheesy griddled tacos. Extravaganza—The Vegas Spectacular brings vintage vibes
In the big opening sequence of Extravaganza—The Vegas Spectacular, now playing at the Jubilee Theater at Bally’s, a friendly Vegas adventurer arrives via train and is quickly introduced to the glamorous excitement of the city by a cavalcade of showgirls and dancers. The scene uses a thunderous version of the memorable James Brown tune “Living in America,” which might remind you of the Godfather of Soul’s performance of the same song in the 1985 blockbuster movie Rocky IV. That equally memorable film scene, in which the character of Apollo Creed is dancing his way down to the boxing ring to face Ivan Drago, was shot at the Jubilee Theater. Bally’s was the original MGM Grand Hotel and Casino until renamed in 1986, but the iconic Jubilee! production show was still going strong after its opening there in 1981.

International producer and director Hanoch Rosenn, who first brought WOW—The Vegas Spectacular to the Rio in 2017 before following up with the opening of Extravaganza in 2020, loves the connection between “Living in America” and the Jubilee Theater, and it’s one of many details in the show that pays homage to the pop culture legacy of Las Vegas. “This show is a tribute to Las Vegas and a tribute to the showgirl and everything Vegas has to offer,” he said. “It’s about the ups and downs, winning and losing, all the legends in the city’s history and just this adventure of coming to Vegas for two or three days and having this roller coaster of an experience. That’s how I see this amazing city.” The glamorous theater is the perfect setting for this very Vegas production, which layers familiar imagery as well as comedy and
a breathtaking performance for a familiar act that hasn’t been done in Las Vegas in years. And America’s Got Talent favorite Silvia Silvia, who came to the city as part of the cast of WOW, flourishes in Extravaganza with her unique crossbow archery skills. As Rosenn put it, Silvia, a third-generation circus performer, seems like she was born to be on this stage, performing truly unbelievable feats in one of the truly classic Las Vegas showrooms. So much to do at Fremont and Main streets Although spur-of-the-moment fun is a hallmark of Vegas, planning some of your activities in advance is essential, especially given reduced capacity for many venues at the moment. In this installment of Las Vegas Magazine’s ongoing Day Planner series, we’ll give you a few options if you are staying near Main Street and
Fremont Street downtown (there are a ton of them for such a small area). Walking shoes are always something to plan on, although the destinations here are relatively close together. Give yourself 10-15 minutes between destinations, regardless. And getting reservations and tickets early is a huge time and brain cell saver.
9 a.m.: You may have got to bed a wee bit late last night, so breakfast at Hash House a Go Go at The Plaza serves two purposes: It’ll allow you to pour copious amounts of coffee down your throat and fuel up for the coming day with massive portions of the restaurant’s signature items or cocktails. We recommend the BLT Mary if you need a hair of the dog, or Andy’s sage-fried chicken and waffles. Both Barry’s Downtown Prime at Circa and Oscar’s Steakhouse at The Plaza are hot spots where prime time is tight. Luckily, there are several other good steakhouses around the area. 8:30 p.m.: Wander on to Fremont Street Experience to look at the light show (this can even be in early evening, thanks to a recent upgrade). 10 p.m.: Head to the Delirious Comedy Show at Downtown Grand. This is staged in a larger room, so there’s no crowding, with different comedians each week. Pauly Shore even plays April 16, 23 and 30. See, laughter is the best medicine.

You may notice some guests (including yourself) headed straight to the elevators. That’s because contactless check-in is no longer a thing of the future. At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
Pools are open again, but operations are significantly different from before. For example, at Wet Republic at MGM Grand and Liquid at Aria, reservations will be required for all hotel and non-hotel guests, and VIP sections will be separated to allow for social distancing. In addition, rigorous cleaning protocols will be implemented.
What a difference a year makes! In 2020, there was little, if any, attendance allowed at sporting events across the country (and none whatsoever in Las Vegas sports venues once the shutdown of the Strip was announced). Now, not only are your favorite teams back, you can buy tickets! And popcorn! And beer! For example, the Vegas Golden Knights can now allow up to 9,000 fans at T-Mobile Arena. Just make sure to be proactive in buying your ticket—demand is bound to be very high!
Experiences vary depending on venue, but every effort is made to make the experience as safe as possible. For example, at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort, you can now access a digital story directory on your phone. There’s also a digital coupon book with nearly 50 offers, which you can access by going to miraclemileshopslv.com. Another digital assist is available from Jules, the retail center’s chatbot, and she can be reached via text message, Facebook Messenger or the retail center’s website. And finally, QR codes make dining easy, as you can see the entire menu on your phone.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.

On New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.
Nightclubs have returned, but the usual operations have significantly changed. For example, at Omnia at Caesars Palace and Hakkasan at MGM Grand, touchless menus are now the norm via scannable QR codes, and the venues are operated as lounges, with social distancing and mask-wearing enforced.
Las Vegas is getting closer and closer to full operation, but your safety is still the top priority. Here are few more things you should know about efforts to make you as safe as possible. Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down, and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find
little bottles of amenities, but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested. You must still wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. While the vaccine rollout has
been successful so far, precautions must still be taken. It’s also considerate of fellow guests and resort workers. When you ride elevators and escalators, there may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups
and try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars. When in lines, practice social distancing. Stay 6 feet from people other than your
travel companions whenever possible. Be patient—even though you are 6 feet apart, you’ll still be moving. When you depart, one of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.
