From the Editor A Real Game Changer
Las Vegas Magazine doesn’t often dedicate its entire feature section to one subject, but once you check out this week’s issue, you’ll understand why: The newly opened Area15 arts and entertainment district, just a few minutes west of the Strip, is unlike anything you have ever seen before. To say that it’s going to be a game-changer is a considerable understatement. Our associate editor, Kiko Miyasato, has already visited the massive space four times in order to take it all in, and she can’t wait to go back again. You’ll understand her enthusiasm when you read her tour of some of the venue’s highlights (“Trip Out!” p. 20). In addition, our photographer, Chris DeVargas, captured some amazing images to help give you an idea of the amazing experience you’re in for. This is something you’re going to tell everyone about back home. We have little doubt it will be one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions going forward. But there’s so much more to discover in this week’s issue. Vegas Golden Knights fans no doubt are aware of Ryan Reaves’ prowess on the ice. But the NHL star has branched out to create his own beer, 7Five, and writer Bob Barnes highlights some of those creations. One of our most popular sections, “Friends With Benefits,” introduces our
readers to the friendly faces that represent various properties around town. This week, managing editor Nina King profiles Lizzy Newsome, the owner of Kappa Toys. Check out her story ( p. 17), and if you happen to visit her store, please let her know you saw her here first. to include an almost-limitless amount of possibilities in any given show, moves at a rapid rate—you’re barely able to register a joke before another one smacks you in the funny bone! Some are extremely corny (Carrot Top fully acknowledges this when it happens), but when they hit, you’ll be helpless with laughter.
One thing you may now know about Mr. Top: He’s in superb shape. To say he expends a considerable amount of energy each every show is a considerable understatement; by the time he’s done, you’ll be tired just from watching him. But no one can deny that he leaves it all on the field. –Ken Miller

A Different View When you visit Las Vegas, there’s only so much you can do on the Strip before it all starts feeling repetitive. An Italian Feast Hail, Caesar! Well, hail Caesar salad. At Carbone, get a tableside experience when you start off a meal with the tasty Caesar salad (although a nice classic cocktail like the Manhattan or a daiquiri also makes for a perfect beginning). That luxurious tableside service just goes so well with the gorgeous surroundings, where plush nooks create a secluded vibe and a snazzy playlist harks back to an old-school Italian restaurant. You might also be seated in a cushy booth, which makes you feel like a celebrity. Forgo the salad, and you’ll undoubtedly want to try the Piemontese carpaccio, octopus pizzaiolo with peppers or a comforting minestrone instead. From Venezuela With Love
Celebrity chef’s Venetian restaurant is a flavor explosion Celebrity chef Lorena Garcia has carved out a nice little niche for herself on the Las Vegas Strip. The Top Chef Masters veteran features the cuisine of her native Venezuela to great effect at Chica, mostly because she incorporates so many clever touches based on the international restaurants she worked at over the course of her amazing career. Chica is by far one of the most comfortable restaurants you’ll visit during your stay—its warm colors and comfortable seating immediately make you feel like you’re in someone’s home, and that you’re the only guest that matters. You’ll be even more relaxed when you dive into one of

the restaurant’s signature cocktails. As you’d expect, tequila makes itself known on this menu, especially in the Chica-Rita, a delicious blend of Espolon, fresh lime, grilled pineapple, fresh sage and Elemakule Tiki bitters. But gin fans will love the Beau Knows, featuring Junipero gin, Luxardo Blanco, strawberry and ginger beer. A meal at Chica wouldn’t be complete without something to share, and if you haven’t tried her arepas, you are truly missing out! But the wild mushroom tostada is a close second, flavored with whipped queso fresco, salsa verde, shaved radish and epazote. The “Chica Classics” portion of the menu is where Garcia’s creativity truly
shines in dishes like slow-roasted suckling pig porchetta, served with spiced plantains and pickled onions, and Latin quinoa and lentils, featuring your choice of grilled shrimp or roasted cauliflower (this is soooo good!), beluga lentils, queso fresco, fire-roasted corn and poblano pico. If you’re a fan of Instagram posting, the churro tower is a must-order dessert. It comes as you’d expect, churros piled high and served with a drizzle of chocolate ganache. Share and Share Alike If you’re looking for an energetic space for your next culinary adventure, you’ll find it in Zuma. You’ll feel the buzz as soon as you see the sushi bar and robata area surrounded by intimate tables and a curving wall of windows. Order the striking Burning History cocktail to sip on through the meal. It’s created with Suntory toki whiskey, ginger, yuzu, honey and egg whites, and poured into a glass that has been inverted over a smoking stave. So memorable and so delicious! Zuma’s dishes are made for sharing, so order edamame and shishito peppers, black cod and prawn gyoza to start, continuing with the colorful yellowtail sashimi and the signature spicy beef tenderloin. The Air Up There Although the Eiffel Tower Viewing Deck is often described as a romantic destination, it’s not all about love. Of course, Paris is inherently sentimental, but you’re in Las Vegas, which is romantic in a fairy-tale sense. That said, if you’re with that special someone, the viewing deck is a wonderful place to steal a kiss; yet, if you’re single, there’s no need to feel singled out, because the tower has something special to offer you, too.

At 460 feet, which is half the height of the original tower in Paris, the viewing deck offers breathtaking, 360-degree views of Vegas and beyond. Business owner sells a sense of wonder With Women’s History Month wrapping up, it seem apropos to highlight one of Las Vegas’ highly successful female business owners, Lizzie Newsome. Newsome, along with husband Trevor Yopp, own Kappa Toys in Fashion Show. She first opened Kappa Toys, with its distinctive turtle icon, in Container Park downtown and later expanded to Fashion Show, opening an online store as well. Newsome grew up on the East Coast of the U.S., and also lived across the pond, which resulted in her wide-ranging childhood. “It’s actually been a huge advantage in my industry because I had a lot of exposure to different cultures and toys because I moved when I was a kid. So I would see TV shows from other cultures and get into different characters that don’t necessarily have the most popularity in the U.S., but … with the globalization through the Internet, a lot of those characters are coming over here,” she says.
Newsome attended college in Austin, Texas, and got into the business soon after. “My first real job out after graduating ended up being at an independent toy store. So that’s really how I got involved.” Both she and her husband worked at the store, and they eventually ended up buying it before relocating to Vegas in the mid 2010s. Today, Newsome herself owns 51 percent of Kappa Toys, interacting with employees, customers and toy suppliers regularly and building relationships with all three groups. The toy store itself stocks a huge variety of retro toys and candy, both iconic Japanese brands and newcomers, plus Kappa Toy-branded items, appealing to children and adults. “So often now, when kids come in, it’s their first time in a toy store ever … it doesn’t exist in the city they’re in. And I’m so passionate about re-creating the classic toy store experience, not just for adults but for kids.” –Nina King

Achieving Another Goal
With 7Five Brewing Company, a local sports star combines careers Adam Coates and Vegas Golden Knights star Ryan Reaves met in school when they were eight years old. Their friendship has remained strong and over the past three years they’ve found a way to work together on something they are both passionate about: beer. After coming to Las Vegas, NHL star Reaves saw the craft beer scene developing and an opportunity to create 7Five Brewing Company with his longtime friend. Coates said, “I’ve worked in beer since the start of my career and this seemed like a natural next step and to get to work with Ryan was icing on the cake.” The name of the company represents the only number Reaves has worn, and the beer names

signify stages of his career. “7Five is the story of my career—it’s not just my story, it’s for everyone in some aspect or another,” Reaves says. Training Day, the initial offering, is an easy drinking golden ale with a mild hop finish. It was followed by Dawn Breaker, a crisp, golden lager with a smooth finish representing showing up before everyone else. The next release was Reaves’ go-to beer style: Shiver Giver IPA bursting with hop flavor and aroma balanced with a touch of malty sweetness. Grim Reaver, the latest, is described by Reaves as: “channeling our greatness, focused on the goal. It’s one of my favorites of all time, smooth and rich with notes of dark chocolate and roasted coffee.” While
not part of the main four, there’s also Showtime Blonde Ale, a drinkable blonde that is an exclusive partnership with MGM Resorts, available at select locations throughout their Las Vegas properties, signifying being in the Show. The beers are brewed by local Able Baker Brewing. Coates said, “We were really impressed with what they were brewing. We have an idea, come to them with flavors and they work with us to bring it to life. Wynn’s Costa di Mare (702.770.3305) is a legend in its own right, authentic coastal Italian cuisine with fresh seafood flown in daily and a romantic waterside setting to match refined dishes like grilled octopus, rare langoustines and house-made pasta with lobster and crab. For something more casual off the Strip, visit neighborhood favorite Meraki Greek Grill (702.202.1002). This easy-to-enjoy eater specializes in beef, lamb or chicken gyros, delicious falafel, skewers of meat served with salad and fries and quite possibly the best lamb burger you’ll ever experience, topped with feta and tzatziki on grilled brioche. Farther west, Khoury’s (702.671.0005), a family-run restaurant, has been serving some of the city’s best Lebanese cuisine for decades. Creamy hummus and baba ganoush are must-try appetizers with fresh-from-the-oven pita bread, but don’t miss the sujuk (spicy sausage), lamb shawarma and farooj baked chicken basted with garlic, lemon and olive oil. That southeastern neighborhood is also home to the Pasta Shop Ristorante (702.451.1893), a warm and cozy experience created and operated by the Alenik family since 1989. Enjoying a meal here always feels like spending time with friends, and signature items like jumbo shrimp scampi, tomato basil polenta, salmon with lobster ravioli and pappardelle alfredo are just as popular and delicious now as ever. Step inside an immersive light and sound experience called Museum Fiasco on the mezzanine level. Created by Corner Bar Management founder Ryan Doherty, this 5,000-squarefoot reimagined museum hosts various exhibitions like the current Cluster, an installation by Playmodes Studio that transports guests into an audio-visual voyage through technology and wonder. The completely immersive, 360-degree world will trick your visual and auditory senses and have you wondering which way is up and which is down. The installation marries different technologies to create astonishing effects while evoking emotions.
The first experience you’ll come across at Area15, before you even enter the building, happens the minute you step out of your car and take a look Art Island. The outdoor gallery houses a number of large-scale, festival-style artworks. (And each piece is actually for sale and starts in the six figures). For dessert lovers, this ice cream shops offers unique flavors like salted caramel chocolate pretzel, toasted s’mores and black raspberry chip. There are even vegan options like mint chocolate and coffee fudge. And you can get your scoops inside a variety of visually tempting, cereal-dipped cones!
On the first floor you’ll find the airy dome of tranquility and peace called The Sanctuary. You may notice some guests (including yourself) headed straight to the elevators. That’s because contactless check-in is no longer a thing of the future. At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel that reopens is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that many employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
There may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups and to try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars, and clean escalator rails.
Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down; and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find little bottles of amenities but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested, and at some hotels, won’t be entering during your stay.
Many venues have plexiglass at payment stations, and marks to encourage social distancing while waiting. In addition, fewer patrons may be allowed in at one time.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.
Although venues may differ, most will implement spacing between each party to encourage social distancing. Masks are mandatory. There is a limit to the number of people allowed in the venue, per current Nevada rules.
Most restaurants require reservations, although not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have 6 feet between them and the number of customers is fewer. Menus may be digital or one-time use paper menus. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers. Bars will also be spacing patrons’ parties 6 feet apart.

Although the number of attractions in Vegas isn’t as high as a few months ago, sanitation is still high on those that are open, and social distancing is easily seen. For instance, on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.
One of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room, and hotels have been using this option for many years now. Look at your bill, OK it if all is correct, and get a copy emailed to you. If you have a physical key, most hotels will allow you to leave it in the room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.
While you’re here in Las Vegas, there are several things you can do to help keep yourself well and decrease the chances of you or someone else getting sick. Give yourself a self-check before you arrive. Do you have a fever? A cough? Is your sense of smell normal? You must now wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. It helps stem the spread of potentially deadly viruses like
