As a full-time resident of Las Vegas, I sometimes get so caught up in the rigors of everyday life that I forget how spectacular my adopted city is. It’s not until I take the time to slow down, get outside and start exploring the valley that I realize how lucky I am to live here. Of course, as a visitor to our amazing city, you already know this; you’re here to explore and discover all Las Vegas has to offer. But this issue of Las Vegas Magazine is a particularly revealing look into some of those off-the-beaten-path elements you may not be aware of. And, really, that’s our mission: to make you as informed as possible so you can enjoy this city the way it was meant to be enjoyed. This week’s centerpiece is going to blow you away. Associate editor Kiko Miyasato takes you on a tour of one of the most extravagant resort suites you will ever see: The One 80 Suite at Red Rock Resort, part of our ongoing “Suite Life” series. Turn to page 22 for a full rundown on all that the suite offers, along with some stunning images courtesy of our ultra-talented staff photographer, Chris DeVargas. This issue’s wow factor doesn’t stop there. This week’s installment of our LVing real estate section features a ridiculously cool home in the small town of Blue Diamond, less than an hour’s drive from
Las Vegas (“Great Escape,” p. 30). You may already be aware that Southern Nevada has some of the best hiking and biking areas around, but this home, which basically has all of that as its backyard, might have you thinking that maybe it’s time to consider actually moving here. Because if you did actually live here, consider all the amazing things you could do on a daily basis. archway that leads into the restaurant. It’s hard to resist the temptation. But that’s only the first taste of what’s to come. Start with a creative cocktail, such as the East-Coast Kali, a mix of jalapeño-infused blanco tequila, Campari, passionfruit and orange. Then dive into the menu. A few
favorite items are the Catch roll (crab, salmon and miso honey) and the truffle sashimi (tuna, hamachi, chili oil, ponzu, caviar and black truffle), but don’t shy away from the grilled Spanish octopus, crispy shrimp, and the seared tuna. –Alex Haase Aria, 702.590.5757

A Little Reflection In the Museum of Dream Space (MODS), it’s all about the interactive experience and capturing that perfect shot. The museum officially held its grand opening at the end of January, including a collaboration with local Las Vegas artist Adam Rellah. Collaborations with other local artists are likely, said Dahooo USA CEO Charles Chang in a recent announcement. “We want people to be able to take away that there is hope. We want them to be inspired. We will continue supporting local artists from the community throughout the year.” Dahooo not only created MODS, but specializes in light mapping in installations throughout the world. The museum is inspired by artist Yayoi Kusama, who found fame in 2015 with “Infinity Mirrors,” and you can see that inspiration in the multiple reflections here, particularly “Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity,” featuring candles in a black background, replicated many times. You’ll also see inspiration from the advent of digital art, which continues to shape expectations of what art is. –Nina King
Legendary Italian At the original Rao’s New York City location, opened in 1896, you’re lucky to get a seat (unless you’re a regular and have “table rights” or if you’re a guest invited by someone who does). The restaurant is that popular and has been for decades. Luckily for Las Vegas visitors you can actually book a table at the family’s Las Vegas location—quite a bit bigger (yet one small room is styled after the NYC location, so guests can get a feel for the original).

The delights of the Southern Neapolitan Italian cooking include standout dishes like Uncle Vincent’s lemon chicken, the large meatballs and the veal chop. For vegetarians, Rao’s offers ravioli purses—beggar purse raviolis filled with Bartlett pears and ricotta and served in brown butter with sage and dried cranberries. Nothing but the best at this downtown steakhouse Derek Stevens is truly one of a kind. The Detroit transplant wasted no time in achieving his singular vision when he arrived here 15 years ago. His downtown property, The D, was so named as a tribute to his hometown. (Stevens has since opened downtown hot spot Circa Resort & Casino.) All you need to know about Stevens is this: He spares no expense. All he cares about is your experience while you’re in town. And there’s no bigger example of that philosophy than The D’s premier restaurant, Andiamo Steakhouse. The warm décor and super-attentive waitstaff are the first things you’ll notice upon entering. You immediately feel like a VIP, and you haven’t even ordered a cocktail yet. And no matter your selection, be it an Old-Fashioned or a Cosmo,

Andiamo delivers it with panache. There’s also a mind-boggling selection of wine. Appetizers are all solid, with particular highlights being the barbecue shrimp, sautéed with garlic, Worcestershire sauce and Cajun seasoning, calamari fritti (an Andiamo favorite, flash-fried with banana peppers and ammoglio sauce), and, of course, the Andiamo Grande Meatball, practically a meal itself, handmade and smothered with tomato sauce and ricotta. The steak selection here is beyond criticism: Andiamo works with the nation’s top butchers to ensure its cuts are in the top 8 percent of all beef in the country. And with the restaurant’s program of 30-day aging (minimum), expect tenderness and flavor to spare in selections like filet mignon,
bone-in ribeye, porterhouse and the massive, 32-ounce tomahawk. We personally recommend trying the “zip” sauce, one of the most unique and addictive we’ve ever tasted. Make sure to pair these babies with sides like Tuscan roasted potatoes, lobster-black truffle baked ziti and cauliflower au gratin. Not in the mood for a steak? Andiamo has a wide variety of pastas (we’re partial to the agnolotti, handmade pasta filled with ground veal, spinach mascarpone crème, black truffle and wild mushrooms), as well as lamb chops, veal chops and veal osso buco. A Teachable Moment During February, at Bodies … The Exhibition, you can learn about a lot more than the body itself. To commemorate Black History Month, the attraction has installed displays that highlight some of the Black men and women who have contributed to the fields of medicine and healthcare. Those include such people as neurosurgeon Dr. Alexa Canady, and Dr. William Edward Allen Jr., the first African American certified X-ray technician, among many others. Bodies is a little like a cross between a natural history museum and a biology class, where real human bodies have been preserved through the method of plastination, replacing body fat and water with plastics, allowing specimens to be moved and posed. They retain many of the properties a live body would, which is why checking out the exhibits is so fascinating. You can actually see what a muscle looks like inside. You can see what a healthy lung looks like next to the lung of a smoker. (Spoiler: it’s not nice.) You might even see what’s really in the heads of some people. Best of Both Worlds
Taiwanese restaurant combines art and food One of the Las Vegas Strip’s most exciting new restaurants got even more exciting this month. Din Tai Fung, where art and food combine in the loveliest way, has introduced a wagyu black pepper beef dish to its Taiwanese menu. The wok-fried Mishima wagyu beef tenderloin is cooked with tri-colored peppers, onion and shimeji mushrooms and finished with a coating of house-made black pepper sauce. It’s a fantastic addition to a restaurant specializing in xiao long bao, or soup dumplings. The Din Tai Fung legacy began in 1972 in Taiwan when proprietor Bing-Yi Yang began serving his special dumplings inside of his cooking oil shop. Decades later, the empire he created stretches across 13 countries. Guests can watch the art of dumpling-making through the restaurant’s show kitchen, where

more than 10,000 dumplings are made every day. In the dining room, set against a beautiful, open space with a 40-foot glass wall that allows the sunlight to pour in, guests are surrounded by a mix of nature-inspired design elements and contemporary architecture. The fresh, umami flavors of the xiao long bao burst through with every bite—popular recipes include the traditional kurobuta pork with hints of ginger and green onion, truffle and blue crab, Jidori chicken and sweet onions, and the vegetarian option with bok choy, dried bean curd and shiitake mushrooms. Delight in freshly made noodle soups like the vegetarian-friendly noodles with sesame sauce, a simple yet flavor-bursting recipe. Another popular pick includes the braised beef noodle soup with a slight heat to each bite. Think
about adding some appetizers to your meal like the tender, sweet and sour pork baby back ribs coated in an addictive house-made sauce, the pleasingly crunchy and slightly spiced cucumber salad, the sticky rice wrap filled with Kurobuta pork, and the popular fried pork chop cut up into chopstick-friendly bites. Wok-fried noodles and rice dishes, pork and vegetable buns, shrimp and pork shao mai and spicy wonton options help round out the menu, as well as a list of healthy greens including string beans, bok choy, sautéed spinach and kale, cabbage and mustard greens. Take to the Skies While a zipline might not be the equivalent of donning a pair of wings, it certainly accomplishes the goal of getting you off the ground and into the air. And when you get into the harness at FLY LINQ Zipline, you might not feel exactly like a sparrow, unless that sparrow is extremely speedy. You’ll start on a tower that reaches the same height as 12 floors! That in itself is pretty exciting, but it’s the voyage down the length of the Linq Promenade that will get your heart racing. Riders reach speeds of up to 35 mph as they zip over the heads of crowds of shoppers 1,171 feet away from the Strip. Choose seated or superhero-style, if you’re really in need of thrills. Although FLY LINQ Zipline is family-friendly, there are height and weight restrictions—you’ll need to weigh at least 60 pounds and no more than 300, be at least 3 feet 4 inches tall, and no more than 6 feet 8 inches tall. And it’s perfect for groups who want to play together and yet stay apart. Erica Kiewice
Curator of dolphin care loves educating others On the Las Vegas Strip, Erica Kiewice has quite possibly the most awesome job. She’s the curator of dolphin care at Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at The Mirage. Yup, that’s right, in the middle of a desert, Kiewice is in charge of caring for the 10 dolphins who call the habitat home. For 24 years, Kiewice has built relationships with each and every dolphin, watching four generations flourish. “They’re my family now, they’re my pod,” she says. “Twenty-four years went by fast. The dolphins really are my family. You worry about them. You look forward to coming in and seeing them every day. It’s always changing. You learn new things—new projects, new research. You’re always expanding your mind. There’s always that goal to make sure the dolphins have the best home and a safe home.” Before her tenure at the habitat, Kiewice, born in Pennsylvania and raised in Dallas,
attended the University of North Texas. After graduation, she got a job as a zookeeper at the Austin Zoo. In 1996, she moved to Las Vegas and heard that the habitat was expanding by building the Secret Garden portion for the big cats. She got the job as a tour guide, but a year later she found out a position in dolphin care opened up. Over the years, Kiewice moved up the ladder in dolphin-care specialists. Subsequent promotions included a lead in dolphin care, supervisor and, four years ago, curator. “I oversee the care of the dolphins, simply put,” she says. “I’m very grateful that I’ve managed to work through and work up and get to where I am. But it was a process. It didn’t happen overnight—it was a lot of hard work and dedication. There were a lot of goals that I set for myself. Even as a curator, I’m still looking to build my skills and to keep growing in my career.” –Kiko Miyasato

At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel that reopens is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that many employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
There may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups and to try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars, and clean escalator rails.
Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down; and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find little bottles of amenities but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested, and at some hotels, won’t be entering during your stay.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.
Although venues may differ, most will implement 25-foot spacing between performers and audience members and space between each party to encourage social distancing. Masks are mandatory. There is a limit to the number of people allowed in the venue, per current Nevada rules.
Most restaurants require reservations, although not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have 6 feet between them and the number of customers is fewer. Menus may be digital or one-time use paper menus. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers. Bars will also be spacing patrons’ parties 6 feet apart.

Although the number of attractions in Vegas isn’t as high as a few months ago, sanitation is still high on those that are open, and social distancing is easily seen. For instance, on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.
One of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room, and hotels have been using this option for many years now. Look at your bill, OK it if all is correct, and get a copy emailed to you. If you have a physical key, most hotels will allow you to leave it in the room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.
While you’re here in Las Vegas, there are several things you can do to help keep yourself well and decrease the chances of you or someone else getting sick. Give yourself a self-check before you arrive. Do you have a fever? A cough? Is your sense of smell normal? You must now wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. It helps stem the spread of potentially deadly viruses like
