Sometimes when we’re going through hard times, the best way to feel better is to help out someone else who’s in need. And when will there be a better time to prove that than right now? After all, 2020 has been a year of hard times. The holidays are now upon us, and it’s seriously time to embrace the “better to give than to receive” philosophy. If you’re like me, you want the last memory of this awful year to be that of knowing you made someone feel special. Luckily, Las Vegas is perfectly tailored to help you do just that. We have arguably the finest shopping complexes in the world offering the latest styles and top designers. For those shopping for that only-in-Vegas product, we also have a bustling local booze scene, creating both beers and spirits. And yes, they are all incredible! This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine is meant to get you started on your gift-buying path—or at least give you some great ideas. Plenty of options to get you in a festive mood Although the holidays look a little different in Las Vegas this year, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy them in style. There are plenty of holiday offerings to put you in a yuletide mood. Over the years, The Cosmopolitan has made its ice rink a tradition, and it has returned this year for its ninth consecutive season. The 4,200-square-foot rink, made of real ice, offers skaters as authentic a winter experience as they’re likely to get in the middle of a desert. Of course, face coverings are required unless eating or drinking, but you’ll be doing plenty of both here: Skating works up an appetite. And all your favorites are on the menu—grilled cheese and tomato soup, s’mores kits for tableside roasting, warm churros, a variety of sliders and more. And

the cocktail menu packs a wallop with the Maker’s Mark-spiked Egg Noggy Nog and the Sugar Plum Fairy, made with Belvedere vodka. Enjoy all this and movies like The Muppet Christmas Carol and The Polar Express on the 65-foot digital marquee until Dec. 29. Speaking of The Polar Express, experience the real thing with the Polar Express on the Grand Canyon Railway, now in its 20th year. Through Jan. 3 families can charter their own private luxury railcar. This 90-minute event, which always sells out quickly, whisks riders from the railway’s historic depot in Williams, Ariz., and takes them to the “North Pole.” Along the way, enjoy hot chocolate and chocolate chip cookies and, of course, a visit from Santa.
Another memorable journey is Glittering Lights, which also celebrates 20 years of tradition at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It’s Nevada’s largest holiday drive-thru light show, featuring more than 5 million lights along a 2.5mile course. It’s open to the public nightly until Jan. 10. For a great free experience for the whole family, head to the lobby of Aria, which features a Winter Wonderland display including a custom-designed Sugar Palace, made out of nearly 4,000 pounds of sugar and standing 15 feet high. Overhead hang hand-carved, oversized ornaments, and it’s surrounded by a “forest” of custom-designed trees detailed with lights. Happy holidays! –Ken Miller

Gaze on the Glaze People fixate on the sparkle of diamonds, the light of the moon and the deep blue hue of the ocean, but few things are as eye-catching as the saucy glaze of a barbecued chicken leg or a thick slab of pork ribs. Thus, if you treasure the art of barbecue, Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que is a gold mine. And Lucille’s doesn’t stick to one style of barbecue. If you’re looking for Memphis-style, Carolina-style, or Texas-style, they’ve got it all. You’ll be tempted to start with the smoked barbecue nachos, a towering combination of tortilla chips, black beans, jalapeños, sour cream, salsa, guacamole and your choice of smoked brisket, smoked chicken, or pulled pork. Then move onto that delicious barbecue. The tender St. Louis pork spare ribs are slowly smoked, then grilled and slathered in a homemade barbecue sauce. You’re Only Human If you’ve always wanted to take a deep dive into human anatomy, a visit to Bodies … The Exhibition is a must. Put through a method known as polymer preservation, 13 whole-body specimens and more than 250 organs and body parts are put on display, allowing visitors to study the human form. Multiple rooms act as teaching experiences touching on the muscular, skeletal, circulatory and respiratory systems. There’s even a highly sensitive exhibit that explains

and shows fetal development (guests can choose to skip this room). Throughout the exhibit, guests will learn a trove of facts about the human body. They’ll also be able to peruse cases filled with body parts, illustrating what a brain looks like from a person that suffered a stroke, or what lungs look like when damaged from smoking. An Adventure in Dining
Celebrity chef’s creativity is on full display at this restaurant David Chang is an explorer. As much as he has accomplished—chef, author, television personality and much more—he’s always looking ahead, never satisfied, always curious. Lucky for us, that sense of adventure is on full display here in Las Vegas at his amazing restaurant, Majordomo Meat & Fish. The sense that you are entering rarefied air becomes apparent the minute you set foot in the restaurant. It’s absolutely gorgeous, with perfectly appointed tables and an attentive waitstaff making sure your experience is impeccable. If you decide to start with a cocktail, make sure to try one of Chang’s smoked versions of either

an Old-Fashioned or Negroni (a recent addition). Both are prepared tableside, and you’ll want to get your phone out to shoot the process. Chang’s desire to think differently is apparent all over the menu. Start off with bing bread and chickpea dip to see what we mean. It’s tempting to think of it as hummus, but it is not. It’s decidedly unique, flavored with Chang’s fermented hozon spice. You can also enjoy bing bread with shaved foie gras or tingly lamb, which is just what it sounds like. The smoke motif continues with the main courses, including a smoked prime rib dinner with bing, butter and honey, a market salad, mashed
potatoes, au jus and, of course, horseradish. Or opt for the smoked whole plate bone-in short rib, served ssam-style (wrapped) with kimchi, soy daikon, ssamjang, bibb lettuce and rice. Sides are equally imaginative, including “B.S.” fries and marinated mushrooms. Seafood lovers have got to try the salt and pepper lobster, served with chilies, crispy garlic and tempura. For dessert, make sure to try Chang’s ice cream sandwich, with small, fluff y pancakes substituting for the cookies normally used. The Morning is Yours It’s one of the prettiest places around, and looks especially lovely in the morning light, which is lucky, because that’s when it’s open! The French-inspired décor at Primrose is fresh, looking like a bit like a house in the country with enormous windows surrounding you. Breakfast is served daily, and fragrant coffee, deep-dish pancakes with almond cream, omelets, eggs Benedict and brioche French toast are the perfect way to start the day. But there are plenty of other dishes available, too, like chicken tenders with grilled lemon, Cobb salad, grilled salmon and French vanilla crème brûlée. For the really hearty appetite, try fire-roasted tomato linguine, the Park Burger with an angus beef patty, steak and eggs, and Mary’s organic roasted chicken. On the weekend, you’ll definitely want to make it brunch, as Primrose has a fabulous cocktail menu, with options like the Garibaldi, with Campari and freshpressed orange juice. Time to Soar If you need some action and adventure in your life, it might be time to visit FLY LINQ Zipline, an attraction that will zoom you across the Linq Promenade and get your adrenaline pumping. Your experience begins on top of a 114foot launch tower, where the height might send your tummy into a nervous tickle, but don’t fret—the wonderful view of the Las Vegas Strip will quickly ease your mind. Before getting strapped into the harness,
flyers decide to sit either backward or forward on the line. Then it’s time to close your eyes, wait and prepare to zip. In an instant, you’re shuttling across the sky and reaching speeds up to 40 mph along the 1,121-footlong zipline. Empress 75 Guests of Top of the World can delight in the restaurant’s new fall menu and new fall cocktails. One eye-catching, as well as delicious, new specialty cocktail is the Empress 75. “The cocktail is very refreshing and very bubbly,” says Kuo. “We’ve added many new cocktails for the fall season, and this one will surely be one of the more popular picks.” The cocktail is mixed with Empress 1908 gin and lemon juice, and then it’s topped off with champagne and garnished with an edible flower. –KM

Steven Kuo
Capturing the American dream Steven Kuo knew only three words when he immigrated to the U.S.: Yes, no and hi. He was 18 years old when he landed in Hawaii from South Korea. Today, Kuo is the general manager of Top of the World at The STRAT. And not only is he running one of the city’s most famous spots, when he joined last year, he helped it become the highest-grossing restaurant in Las Vegas. “There is opportunity in America—if you work your tail off,” he says. “And it takes commitment; you have to have commitment.” And Kuo has that. He eventually moved to Las Vegas in 1999 to pursue a degree from UNLV’s hospitality program. After graduation, he worked seemingly everywhere in the city, from The Mirage and Wynn to Caesars Palace and Aria. He’s even been the owner and chef of his own local Chinese restaurant (he learned cooking from working in his family’s restaurants in Korea and Hawaii). “Being in this industry, it’s in my blood, I guess,” Kuo says.
But after working all over the Strip, “One day I was like, ‘I’ve pretty much done all types of restaurants—casual, café, buffet, fine dining, Italian, Japanese, Chinese—I’ve never once worked at a steakhouse,’” he says. That’s when he applied at Top of the World. “It’s the first time in my career that I’ve had an office with a view. You can’t beat this view.” As the general manager, Kuo says his greatest responsibilities are attending to his guests and supporting his team. He loves meeting new people that come to his restaurant; he’s even been witness to tons of marriage proposals. In regards to his team, he says that, as their manager, it’s important that he stays open-minded and adaptable, and that he always evolves to be the best manager he can be. “It’s not just me, I’m grateful for my bosses and my team members,” he says. “I’m grateful to be here. … I’ve always known, if I put my mind to it, I can get anything done.” –Kiko Miyasato

The Game Day margarita with Espolòn tequila, Cointreau, lime, agave and Grand Marnier float and the Gin + Juice with Bombay Sapphire gin, cucumber, mint and lime are familiar cocktails with a delicious
spin. For something sweeter, try the Knight Cap, a martini-style treat mixed with Grey Goose Le Vanille vodka, espresso and chocolate bitters. For some truly out-of-the-ordinary sips, try the Thirst & Goal, a mix of Martini & Rossi prosecco, Aperol, grapefruit and rose water, or the Raging Bull with Grey Goose vodka, ginger beer, lime and smoked cherry syrup. You may notice some guests (including yourself) headed straight to the elevators. That’s because contactless check-in is no longer a thing of the future. At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel that reopens is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that many employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
There may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups and to try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars, and clean escalator rails.
Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down; and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find little bottles of amenities but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested, and at some hotels, won’t be entering during your stay.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.
Although venues may differ, most will implement 25-foot spacing between performers and audience members and space between each party to encourage social distancing. Masks are mandatory. There is a limit to the number of people allowed in the venue, per current Nevada rules.
Most restaurants require reservations, although not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have 6 feet between them and the number of customers is fewer. Menus may be digital or one-time use paper menus. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers. Bars will also be spacing patrons’ parties 6 feet apart.

Although the number of attractions in Vegas isn’t as high as a few months ago, sanitation is still high on those that are open, and social distancing is easily seen. For instance, on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.
One of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room, and hotels have been using this option for many years now. Look at your bill, OK it if all is correct, and get a copy emailed to you. If you have a physical key, most hotels will allow you to leave it in the room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.
While you’re here in Las Vegas, there are several things you can do to help keep yourself well and decrease the chances of you or someone else getting sick. Give yourself a self-check before you arrive. Do you have a fever? A cough? Is your sense of smell normal? You must now wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. It helps stem the spread of potentially deadly viruses like
