From the Editor What I’m Thankful For
As we look forward to the holidays across the country and in Las Vegas, it’s hard to not constantly be thinking about how much we’ve all been through this year. The shutdowns, the job losses, the thousands we’ve lost to COVID-19 ... it seems overwhelming to reflect on. And at the same time, who’s got time to reflect? Our journey out of this mess is not over yet. COVID cases are again spiking, our legislative bodies appear to be at a standstill on helping the millions who are jobless, and more shutdowns are a possibility unless we get things under control. So it begs the question: With Thanksgiving approaching, what are you all thankful for? What bright spots have you been able to latch onto in 2020, arguably the worst year in our country’s history? For some, it might be friends and family, who help us get through the lonely times of social distancing. For others, it’s still having a job, whether in an office or at home. And for others, it might be staying healthy. For me, it’s you. The person reading this letter. Because if you’re reading this, that means you’re visiting Las Vegas and helping our city recover. It means you’re genuinely interested in the information we supply on a weekly basis to help you get the most of your time here. And it means you trust that our city will look out for your
safety while you’re here. Without visitors, there is no Las Vegas. So thank you! Now down to business: This issue is packed with great information. If you’re here to enjoy Thanksgiving with family and friends, Las Vegas Magazine’s managing editor Nina King has compiled a cornucopia of great offers up and down the Strip and all over the valley (“A Fine Feast,” p. 24). Time In In early March, the masked dance crew Jabbawockeez launched Timeless, a revamp of the show that’s graced stages for the last decade. Days later, Timeless’ opening ironically became a victim of poor timing when Governor Steve Sisolak put the Las Vegas Strip, and the rest of the State, under a coronavirus lockdown, closing all shows indefinitely.

Yet, seven months later, the Jabbawockeez became one of the first acts to return to the Strip, and they’ve moved onto bigger places; due to restrictions—6 feet between parties, 25 feet between audience and performers, and audiences limited to 250 guests—Jabbawockeez have moved their electrifying, high-tech show from their 350-seat theater
to the nearly 17,000-seat MGM Grand Garden Arena. But such distance does not detract from the experience. Once the lights go down, lasers beam throughout the arena, the soundtrack booms, and the Jabbawockeez captivate audiences with their smooth moves. Even though they aren’t up close, the show still feels personal. –Alex Haase

Expect Excellence It’s one of the most exclusive restaurants in Las Vegas— it’s celebrated chef Guy Savoy’s only establishment in the U.S.—and when you score a reservation at Restaurant Guy Savoy, you can expect excellence. If you opt for the $555 celebration menu, you’ll be wowed by dishes such as oysters, artichoke and black truffle soup, and A5 Japanese wagyu beef with lobster and carrot, plus a decadent dessert and a premium wine pairing. The six-course white truffle menu explores them in everything from entrée to dessert for $455. An optional wine pairing is $250 per person. If you choose those menus, the entire table will need to order it. The a la carte menu lets you explore some of the flavors of the specialty menus, such as foie gras on brioche with white truffle, or enjoy the signature Colors of Caviar. Muscovy duck breast comes with a confit leg and foie gras, and Snake River Farms American wagyu rib cap and braised short rib is enhanced by jus Bordelaise. Flock to the Fountain Like Times Square in New York City or Bourbon Street in New Orleans, the Fountains of Bellagio water show is what people around the world associate with Las Vegas. Thus, it’s the sun of the Strip’s solar system, and all other hotels, casinos and attractions are merely locked in the Fountain’s orbit. Naturally, such pull attracts tourists and all sorts of peculiar characters. As the Fountains do their magic in the background, one might also spot one of Las Vegas’

endangered showgirls or watch a Michael Jackson impersonator moonwalk along Las Vegas Boulevard. It’s all part of the experience, and it also adds a little fun in the downtime between shows. Vegetarians can enjoy the vegetable and mushroom dumplings, filled with shiitake mushrooms, glass noodles, bok choy and dried bean curd.
If you’re in the mood for something spicy, try the shrimp and kurobota pork wontons with spicy sauce. And you won’t be able to stop eating the jidori chicken fried rice, so light and fluff y, and packed with big pieces of free-range chicken. Vegetarian fried noodles also satisfy, packed with Napa cabbage, spinach leaves and green onion-infused oil over house-made noodles. For dessert, chocolate fans will love the chocolate and mochi xiao long bao, dumplings filled with warm, chocolaty goodness. More of a bun fan? Dim Sum and Then Some Eating dim sum is a satisfying experience, and it’s easy to overindulge. Each time a dish is ordered from the steam-heated cart that rolls by your table, like chow mein, shrimp dumplings, Chinese broccoli, steamed buns and more, it resets your appetite— you’re always ready for more. (By the end of it, you’ll probably wish you could reset your bank account, too.) And one of the best places to enjoy this experience in Las Vegas is at Ping Pang Pong, which was once recognized as one of the top 10 Chinese restaurants in America by Travel + Leisure. Sun and fun for director of pool operations While Mike Peña did most of his growing up in Las Vegas, the first time he saw the inside of a nightclub was the first night he started his job as a server assistant at Wynn’s Surrender nightclub. “I had gone from never setting foot inside a nightclub to being the general manager of a club that I first started my career at.” After spending six years at Surrender and Encore Beach Club, Peña went on to help launch nightclub On the Record at Park MGM and dayclub Kaos at Palms. Asked about how he moved up so fast in an industry known for finding success, in part because it’s about who you know, Peña says, “It’s the willingness to grind. To show up, not complain and get the job done and bust your ass and work hard. That can take you further sometimes than a connection.” Toward the end of 2019, he decided to take some time off, but by February he got back to work, this time at his current position as the director of pool operations for the new Stadium
Swim at Circa. “My very first day on the job was the same day that the governor shut everything down because of the pandemic,” he says. While he worked from home for the first couple of months, he was back on property by July, and since then his focus has been building up Stadium Swim’s reputation as a new hot spot. “We want this to be the absolute best place in the city for anyone who enjoys any type of sports to be able to come to the pool party, hang out in the sun, enjoy the water, the drinks, and being outside,” Peña says. Stadium Swim is now Peña’s third successful launch in the nightlife-daylife industry—an industry that, after a dozen years, he says his affections have only grown for. “It beats the hell outta working in a cubicle. Getting to be outside in the fun, in the sun is far more entertaining. It keeps me intrigued. I definitely want to keep advancing—been doing that since day one that I got into this industry.” –Kiko Miyasato

Live performances are back on the Strip at bar and lounge hot spots We missed a lot of things during the lengthy Las Vegas Strip shutdown, but maybe nothing more than live music. Well, it’s back! And there’s plenty of options you can now enjoy, along with some great cocktails. For an assortment of live music, head to the Piano Bar at Harrah’s. The songs of Elvis come alive through singer Big Elvis every Friday and Saturday. After him, the sounds of Saxman entertain, and the Dueling Pianos performers close out the evening (they also perform Sundays.) For more dueling piano sounds, check out The Bar at Times Square at New York-New York. Sing along to classic and modern hits and make some requests as the two piano players battle it out Friday through Sunday. For more of a
subdued but equally impressive piano experience, head to Bellagio’s Petrossian Bar. Want to do some dancing while listening to bands playing rocking cover songs? Le Cabaret at Paris welcomes guests back to its openwalled venue every Friday and Saturday evening. There’s also a bar attached so you can add some cocktails to the experience. For similar, casual fun, Indigo Lounge at Bally’s also invites guests to dance and drink while listening to live bands every Friday and Saturday night. Legendary Las Vegas comedian Carrot Top has been performing in the same showroom for approximately 15 years, so to say that he has become comfortable in his space is an understatement. Like many other performers, he made quite the shift in returning to live performances recently, moving his show from that cozy Atrium Showroom to the You stayed in Florida during most of the entertainment shutdown. What was that like? I live on a lake and it’s beautiful there but there was never really time to enjoy those moments because you’re stressed out about what’s going on. It’s been kind of bittersweet, not seven months off or a fun way to have a vacation. What was your first reaction when you got the call that it was time to get back onstage in Las Vegas? It was a beautiful moment. I loved hearing that they finally set the date and we’re going to do it, but the restrictions that have been put in still scare me a little bit. They moved me to
the (bigger Luxor Theater), which is three times the room I play now, and it’s a different beast altogether. Comedy is so intimate. That’s the reason we have comedy clubs and rooms like mine. But I’ll get onstage and experience what I’m going to experience and try to grow from it and, each night, make it better. You have audiences of 250 in the Luxor Theater and everyone is distanced. How much do you have to change your show to account for those changes? Audience interaction and that kind of stuff is going to be hard (to replace) there, because it will be less intimate, less one-on-one with the audience, which
larger Luxor Theater in order to safely accommodate audiences and protocols. Carrot Top’s beloved show was one of seven different productions returning to three MGM Resorts properties in early November, and his excitement level was through the roof after the long layoff. I think is one of the things that makes my show fun. I get this kind of bond with the audience because we’re so close and they feel like by the end of the night, they get to know me as a person. But we’ll work on it and make the best of it, and that’s all we can do. Everyone is doing the same thing, just adapting to these challenges. You’re adding plenty of new material, too. Have you been working on a full arsenal of pandemic jokes? Everyone keeps asking me about COVID jokes and I’m not going to go crazy on that. I don’t want people to come in and think about that so much. We’ll address it with some jokes and sto-
ries, touch on it, but I want people to have at least a touch of normalcy. What about your own sense of normalcy? These past few months have probably been the longest period you’ve ever been away from the stage. I sure missed it. There was a void in my life for seven months. After all that time, you realize you kind of take for granted that you’re used to doing 240 shows a year. I think I forget just how much interaction and energy I get from them, and getting to laugh. That’s one thing I love about my job is I get to laugh every night as well and escape just the same as the audience does. Luxor, 702.262.4400

For that traditional feel, try Hearthstone Kitchen & Cellar (Red Rock Resort, 702.797.7344). The a la carte menu here includes a turkey dinner ($28) with white and dark meat, apple-raisin stuffing and mashed potatoes, plus sides like jalapeño creamed corn and sweet potato purée—you know, like momma used to make. Also at Red Rock, T-Bones Chophouse (702.797.7594) features butternut squash soup with bourbon maple-glazed seared foie gras, a Diestel Farms organic free-range turkey, and pumpkin pie served with pecan pie ice cream. You might wanna go just for that ice cream. Canaletto (The Grand Canal Shoppes, 702.733.0070) has gone all out this year, with a prix fi xe menu ($51.95, $19.95 for 12 years or under) with vegetarian butternut squash-and-potato soup and family-style turkey breast with cranberry sauce and gravy, plus mashed potatoes, baked yams and haricots verts (all items available a la carte). Pair it with a wine flight, including three half-glass pours of selected wines for $16.95. Bargain!
If it’s turkey you are after, you’ve got it, in traditional form or with a twist. At Old Homestead Steakhouse (Caesars Palace, 702.731.7560), you’ll find a special prix fi xe menu ($89 per person) with an unusual cranberry-bacon bone marrow, oven-roasted turkey breast with Esposito sausage stuffing (the sausage’s balanced flavors are a favorite in New York), cranberry jam and gravy, and a pumpkin-spiced cheesecake or pecan pie bar. Here’s something completely different—and so decadent. Mott 32 (The Palazzo, 702.607.3232) has created a Thanksgiving Day a la carte menu with items like crispy fried squab, sea cucumber and seafood crispy rice soup. For your main entrée, diners can enjoy sweet geoduck (actually a type of clam, $248), with XO sauce, or salt and pepper. Also at Palazzo, David Chang’s Majordomo Meat & Fish (866.659.9643) plans a twist on holiday fare with such items as truffle macaroni, sweet potato pie, king crab, striped bass, and smoked prime rib. What you may really be after is the pumpkin flan, which is topped with 400 Conejos joven mezcal whipped cream and a chile graham crumble. Nearby at Yardbird Southern Table & Bar (702.297.6541), the a la carte menu features Charleston she-crab soup, a turkey dinner, lobster mac and cheese with whole lobster, pumpkin and pecan pies, and strawberry peach cobbler. Upscale steakhouse Top of the World (The STRAT, 702.380.7711) has a fourcourse prix fi xe menu ($106) with roasted pumpkin soup, butternut squash raviolis or shrimp scampi au gratin, roasted freerange turkey breast, and pumpkin tart. At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel that reopens is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
There may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups and to try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars, and clean escalator rails.
Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down; and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find little bottles of amenities but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested, and at some hotels, won’t be entering during your stay.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.
Although venues may differ, most will implement 25-foot spacing between performers and audience members and space between each party to encourage social distancing. Masks are mandatory. There is a limit to the number of people allowed in the venue, per current Nevada rules.
Most restaurants require reservations, although not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have 6 feet between them and the number of customers is fewer. Menus may be digital or one-time use paper menus. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers. Bars will also be spacing patrons’ parties 6 feet apart.

Although the number of attractions in Vegas isn’t as high as a few months ago, sanitation is still high on those that are open, and social distancing is easily seen. For instance, on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.
One of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room, and hotels have been using this option for many years now. Look at your bill, OK it if all is correct, and get a copy emailed to you. If you have a physical key, most hotels will allow you to leave it in the room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.
While you’re here in Las Vegas, there are several things you can do to help keep yourself well and decrease the chances of you or someone else getting sick. Give yourself a self-check before you arrive. Do you have a fever? A cough? Is your sense of smell normal? You must now wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. It helps stem the spread of potentially deadly viruses like
COVID-19. It’s also considerate of fellow guests and resort workers.

Beer Here Sometimes you need a fresh beer. But a fresh beer that’s been brewed on premises? You can get that at Trustworthy Brewing (The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian and The Palazzo, 702.607.2337), a San Diego stalwart whose Vegas export is the only brewery on the Strip. The open, airy venue features several new beers, brewed on-premise by Trustworthy head brewer Zach Johnson, including the Palazzo Pale, an American pale ale, and the A Year in the Making, an American amber ale. Others have been brewed in the San Diego facility, like Trustworthy IPA, a beer that appeals even to stout lovers (trust me!) and the Showroom Ready hazy IPA.
