Las Vegas is the place people come to party. It’s hard to close your eyes, think of Las Vegas and not immediately envision a large crowd gathered together, cocktails in hand, hands in the air, and smiling ear to ear. But there’s a softer side to Las Vegas that’s not heavily publicized. Believe it or not, this is a great city to unwind, relax and, yes, even get in touch with your innermost feelings. There are the obvious examples across the Strip: The Fountains of Bellagio, easily one of the most-visited spots on the Strip on any given week; the Wildlife Habitat at Flamingo, a great place to sit and bird-watch awhile; and any of the resort properties’ myriad pools, which practically beg you to grab a book, sit on a chaise lounge and veg. But here at Las Vegas Magazine, we love to make you feel like a true Vegas insider, which is why we’ve compiled a list of not-so-obvious ways to chill out while you’re here. We start with Alex Haase’s roundup of some of the most calming, soothing, and just plain tranquil venues in Southern Nevada (“Moments of Zen,” p. 20). Then, because summer is firmly in our rearview mirror, check out Kiko Miyasato’s collection of some truly sensational massages, manicures, pedicures and foot scrubs on tap for those seeking to really get away from it all and pamper them-
selves to the max (“9 Spa Treatments for Fall,” p. 26). Of course, we don’t expect you to just relax while you’re here; what’s a visit to Las Vegas without some extreme fun? Lords of the Fly Thanks to Maverick Helicopters, flying high in a chopper is no longer reserved for celebrities, high-profile businessmen and Bond villains. It’s 15 minutes of adrenaline and awe. But on the Wind Dancer tour, passengers fly to one of the world’s natural
wonders, the Grand Canyon. During the flight, breathtaking views of Hoover Dam and Lake Mead appear along the journey. Then, once the destination is reached, the helicopter descends into the depths of the canyon, where guests can enjoy beautiful sights and snack on light bites. –Alex Haase

Thrills Times Three There are so many unique experiences in Las Vegas that it’s easy to take its offerings for granted. But the fact that this city has an amusement park in the sky is not talked about nearly enough. On top of The STRAT Skypod—the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States, by the way—a trio of extreme rides have been thrilling tourists and locals alike for the better part of two decades: Big Shot, X-Scream and Insanity. But it all started with Big Shot, the original tower ride that opened with the property in 1996. Back then, riding up and down a space needle 1,000 feet above ground was thought of as psychotic. Flash forward to the early 2000s, and riding Big Shot became merely courageous, because The STRAT doubled down on pants-peeing thrill rides with the construction of X-Scream, a roller coaster that teeter-totters over the edge of the Skypod, and Insanity, a carousel controlled by a giant mechanical arm of doom that dangles and spins 64 feet away from the Skypod. Mime is Money
‘America’s Got Talent’ finalist’s hit show returns to Strip
Full disclosure: One of the funniest things I’ve ever seen happened at a Tape Face show. I took my parents to The House of Tape at Harrah’s to see the America’s Got Talent finalist (we were all big fans), and my father ended up getting pulled up onstage, along with two other unsuspecting “volunteers.” What happened next still has my mother laughing to this day. Tape Face, with his signature piece of duct tape covering his mouth so he cannot speak, gestured to each man, after which he mimed the motion they were to perform on cue. Then The Jacksons’ “Blame It On the Boogie” started

up, and whenever the chorus came up, my poor father (he’s in his 70s) had to thrust his hips a la Elvis Presley. No, I don’t have video proof (filming is not allowed at the show), but it’s forever seared into my mental scrapbook. And that’s ultimately the best part about Tape Face’s show: Every routine he performs involves an audience member, and so he pulls a lot of people onstage, each of whom get their own special moment of fame and memories to last a lifetime. His humor involves everyday household items: fly swatters, oven mitts, clotheslines, staple guns, you name it.
Every time he pulls out his latest prop, there’s a brief moment where you ask yourself, “Where’s he going with this?” It sometimes takes a while for the answer to that question, but the payoff is always rewarding—and hilarious. Odds are Tape Face’s show will be much different with social distancing guidelines requiring the use of masks and at least 6 feet of space between people, but odds are he’ll find a way to still connect with audiences. Bright and Beautiful One of the nicest restaurants on the Strip, in decor and cuisine, has to be Giada. Since opening in 2014, De Laurentiis’ California-influenced Italian food has caused thousands of happy diners to pat their bellies in supreme satisfaction. Although it was closed for several months, fans could keep up with De Laurentiis via her website, giadzy.com, for recipes and posts by the celebrity chef and her team. Viewing the suggestions there and on her Instagram account certainly increased this writer’s yearning to revisit Giada and get those bright citrus flavors on a plate. The current menu features Giada’s most popular dishes, including a seafood tower to start, and pesto arancini and bacon-wrapped date antipasti. Enjoy classic dishes such as spaghetti with shrimp, mascarpone, lemon and cheese, lobster ravioli and a 28-ounce Tuscan-style bone-in ribeye. But you can’t go wrong with bucatini in a Calabrian chili pomodoro with fresh ricotta, the cacio e pepe bucatini with pecorino Toscano, or crab and scallop risotto. Animal Farm Before Joe Exotic became a household name, magic duo Siegfried & Roy were the original tiger kings. During their long, successful run in Las Vegas, big cats like white tigers played a prominent role in the duo’s magic show. And although the duo retired in 2010, the big cats never really left the spotlight, because many of the tigers and lions who once worked with the duo now appear at Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat, a lush

A Rocking Time
Prop comic extraordinaire returns to successful show One thing you need to know about Carrot Top before seeing his show: The man loves music. Be prepared to be peppered by music from many genres as the comic, aka Scott Thompson, helps you forget your troubles for an hour through some truly silly, but seriously hilarious, comedy. Yes, props are a big part of Carrot Top’s comedy—in fact, he’s now got so many that repeat customers will probably rarely see the same ones twice. (We dare anyone to keep a straight face when he displays a piece of cardboard with two large cut circles right next to each other, calling it an application form for working at Hooters.)

But it’s easy to see how much of an influence music has had on Thompson’s act. Yes, there’s the music he plays to get the audience fired up, but it pervades everything in his show. He has many laughs at some very famous rock songs’ expense, including Electric Light Orchestra’s “Don’t Bring Me Down” and U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” And don’t worry, country fans—he has plenty of fun with that genre as well. And Carrot Top’s final bit is a great blend of rock music and physicality, as he tirelessly romps to various song segments, showing off
his physique (this man is in incredible shape for a 55-year-old!) and stamina. Carrot Top returned to Luxor earlier this month, and while social distancing guidelines will mandate a smaller crowd size, his show shouldn’t be affected much at all. In fact, it might have a special added benefit: Normally he goes through the crowd, dispensing the contents of a bottle of Crown Royal. Assuming he will still be doing that, a smaller crowd size would seem to suggest that more audience members will get their chance to enjoy a shot. –Ken Miller Luxor, 702.262.4400

Chris Gutierrez
Bar manager is the spirit behind the spirits Want to immerse yourself in Las Vegas’ downtown cocktail scene and its supporting cast? The place would be Corduroy, and the person to visit with is bar manager Chris Gutierrez. Born in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., Gutierrez says he was raised all over the country, anywhere that was a gaming town—Atlantic City, New Orleans, Detroit—as his father was in the gaming business. Vegas was the last city they landed in, and it’s where Gutierrez began his career in bartending more than 15 years ago. Gutierrez is an integral part of downtown’s renaissance, spending time behind the bar first at Gold Spike and helping to relaunch the hot spot when Tony Hsieh and the Downtown Project, now known as DTP, injected money and a rebirth of arts and culture into the area. Gutierrez then went on to open Oak & Ivy at Container Park and then, three years ago, Corduroy. “I think Las Vegas is the coolest for cocktails,” he says. “Vegas is positioned in an
awesome place where we can essentially show what we can do to the world, because the world walks up and down the street right here.” At Corduroy, “Our drinks and the quality of them are a cool addendum to what’s already a fun experience,” Gutierrez says. He’s right. There’s so much to see and experience inside this one-of-a-kind, ’70s-inspired bar. Gutierrez is such a big part of Corduroy’s honest charm. When speaking with him, you can easily feel his love for not only making cocktails, but his love for the bar and the streets that surround it. After all the years of creating cocktails, teaching the next generation of bartenders and helping guide downtown into its resurgence, Gutierrez remains humble and shows immense pride for his craft and industry. “I try to be as approachable and relatable as I can be,” he says. “If I don’t come from the heart with what I’m doing, it’s never worked out for me.” –Kiko Miyasato

Steak tartare used to be the Rodney Dangerfield of the food world—it got no respect. In fact, it spent quite a lot of time being the brunt of jokes, including a particularly cruel bit courtesy of Mr. Bean, in which the titular character spends his entire meal trying to hide the dish in question wherever he can find space on the table, rather than just telling his server he really doesn’t want to eat it. Those days are fully in the rear-view mirror. Savvy diners know that

not only is steak tartare a must-try dish at higher-end restaurants, it can often define the dining experience. On its face, the dish can seem deceptively simple: It’s traditionally made with raw ground beef and served with any number of ingredients, from onions and Worcestershire sauce to capers and pepper. But take one bite of steak tartare at any of Las Vegas’ top steakhouses, and you’ll realize that description falls short. The only limits to steak tartare here are the chefs’ imaginations. There’s the sublime Prime steak tartare at Aria’s Bardot Brasserie, a visual feast with its orange egg yolk seeping into every crevice of the dish. A small bit of sauce verte (green sauce) adds just a bit more color and flavor, and the deep flavors of the meat pair perfectly with house-made waffle fries. Bazaar Meat by José Andrés at Sahara Las Vegas has a fantastic selection of tartares, each more inventive than the next. As good as Vittore 1950 is (small medallions of flawless tenderloin with black pepper, Parmesan, capers, brown-butter croutons and sherry dressing), fans—and especially vegetarians—will want to dive into Andrés’ beefsteak tomato tartare, which looks like the real thing but is a taste sensation all its own. Flavored with balsamic vinegar, cucumber and black olive, it will have you asking, “How did he do this?” Hank’s Fine Steaks & Martinis at Green Valley Ranch provides an excellent 7X wagyu beef tartare for its happy hour, and you won’t be happier than when you’re experiencing the flavor sensations of quail egg yolk and smoked paprika aioli on some toasted brioche. The newest arrival on the block, handcut Prime beef tartare at Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse at Flamingo, comes courtesy of head chef Lamar Moore, and it’s easily one of the best things on the entire menu, who shared his secret to making the meltin-your-mouth appetizer: dry-aged New York Strip. “When it comes to steak tartare, the quality of beef you buy matters more than ever,” Moore says. “If you have a local butcher or specialty meat shop, it’s best to purchase your meat there. The more tender the meat, the less chance you’ll encounter chewy bites of gristle.”

You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel that reopens is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that many employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
There may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups and to try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars, and clean escalator rails.
Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down; and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find little bottles of amenities but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested, and at some hotels, won’t be entering during your stay.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.
Although venues may differ, most will implement 25-foot spacing between performers and audience members and space between each party to encourage social distancing. Masks are mandatory. There is a limit to the number of people allowed in the venue, per current Nevada rules.
Most restaurants require reservations, although not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have 6 feet between them and the number of customers is fewer. Menus may be digital or one-time use paper menus. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers. Bars will also be spacing patrons’ parties 6 feet apart.

Although the number of attractions in Vegas isn’t as high as a few months ago, sanitation is still high on those that are open, and social distancing is easily seen. For instance, on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.
One of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room, and hotels have been using this option for many years now. Look at your bill, OK it if all is correct, and get a copy emailed to you. If you have a physical key, most hotels will allow you to leave it in the room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.
While you’re here in Las Vegas, there are several things you can do to help keep yourself well and decrease the chances of you or someone else getting sick. Give yourself a self-check before you arrive. Do you have a fever? A cough? Is your sense of smell normal? You must now wear your mask in public areas, including the casino.
