From the Editor Becoming Whole Again
By the time you read this, our presidential election will be over, and while we may or may not have a clear picture of the winner, we will at least be ready to enter the next chapter of our country’s history. Regardless of whether it’s red or blue who wins this whole thing, it’s crucial that our country proceed forward to becoming whole again. Yes, Las Vegas has made major strides in the last few months: First was the reopening of major casino/hotels and some scattered restaurants; then came bars, pools and spas; then production shows. The next logical step for our city is conventions and concerts, and, possibly, nightclubs and buffets. But even if some of these things either don’t return or take longer than expected to return, Las Vegas will find ways to make the experience of visiting a memorable one. Which is where Las Vegas Magazine comes in. Our mission has always been to make sure you maximize your time in enjoying all the city has to offer. Whether you’re here for a day or a week, our magazine provides invaluable information to help make you feel like a real insider. Highlighting that theme this week is the launch of a new series, “Day Planner,” in which we provide suggestions for the best way to spend 24 hours in Sin City, depending
on where you are staying. Our inaugural feature (“Time Traveler,” p. 26), specifically addresses the area of Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard South. Sit Back and Relax Heck, even though we’re in the middle of a desert, the islands are calling. Rhumbar at The Mirage re-creates an idyllic island setting where guests can sip on tropical cocktails and puff on their favorite cigar—all while enjoying an indoor/outdoor setting filled with lush greenery and views of the iconic Mirage volcano. Of course, rum is the name of the game when it comes to Rhumbar’s cocktail menu.

There’s a mix of classic and tropical-inspired cocktails, and guests can go traditional by ordering the signature Rhumbar mojito, mixed with rum, mint and lime. The open, airy venue features several new beers, brewed on-premise by Trustworthy head brewer Zach Johnson, including the Palazzo Pale, an American pale ale, and the A Year in the Making, an American amber ale. At Topgolf Las Vegas, microchipped golf balls track distance and velocity, turning the driving range into a game where the farthest and most accurate shots score the most points. But now the experience just got even more fun: The new Angry Birds game has landed in Las Vegas. First, you’ll launch your Angry Birds character (which is a golf ball) into the distance. You hustle up to the second floor and arrive at Carbone, an outpost of the New York original, by 5:35 for a light salad, followed by some spicy rigatoni vodka and a huge meatball. Oh, and you definitely take the time to take in the restaurant’s amazing décor and listen to the great collection
of classic tunes from Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and others. 3. You finish your fast-paced but delicious journey at Bardot Brasserie, Michael Mina’s tribute to the cuisine of Paris. Here, you sample amazing deviled eggs, avocado toast garnished with big pieces of shrimp, and a delectable beef Wellington. So good! This experience is already over-the-top, but if you really want to make this an evening to remember, for an additional $100 per person, you can be whisked away from the property in a custom limousine and taken to Maverick Helicopters, where you and your party will board an ECO-Star for a 12- to 15-minute flight along the Las Vegas Strip. Topless production now in its 21st successful year One of the first things you notice when you’re in the audience waiting for Fantasy to begin is the wide range in ages around you. Yes, you’ve got plenty of 20-somethings, ready to have a cocktail (or two) and really let loose when the sexy ladies take the stage. But there’s also plenty of senior citizens in attendance, and sometimes they make even more noise than their much-younger counterparts. Anita Mann’s topless revue has been going strong for 21 years, and once you’ve seen the show, it becomes obvious why: This is just out-and-out fun from start to finish, highlighted

from some seriously rocking dance moves and a soundtrack that spans the decades. Mann’s show is sure to be a different experience in the time of COVID-19—every show reopening has to follow strict social distancing guidelines, audience members must wear a mask during the performance, and any show that has the element of performers working closely together onstage will have to find a way to work around that. But Fantasy has always been a show that’s evolved with the times, and it seems a safe bet that Mann will figure out a solution that keeps the show fresh and captivating.
One element of Fantasy that will remain unchanged is its “halftime” comedy entertainment, in the form of comedian/magician Murray Sawchuck. Longtime visitors to Vegas will no doubt recognize Sawchuck from his many stints around town at properties ranging from Tropicana Las Vegas to Planet Hollywood. He’s easily one of the most likable performers on the Strip, and he fits in perfectly with Fantasy’s lively vibe. And Lorena Peril will still host the festivities, a powerful singer who’s amazing at loosening up uptight audiences. To see her in action is as entertaining as the ladies onstage. –Ken Miller

Go Big, Go Brunch It’s a monster, all right, and it’s one you have a fair shot at destroying. Check into brunch in MTO Café and order possibly the tallest mimosa you’ve ever seen. The Megamosa ($60) is two full bottles of champagne, orange juice, raspberry purée and fresh fruit, just begging for its Instagram debut. And after downing that, who needs food? Me. I need food. I’m a hungry girl. I bet you need food, too. Luckily the MTO Café has a killer menu. Lemon-poppyseed pancakes, breakfast tacos with steak chicken or veggies, Denver omelettes, garden veggie quesadillas and steak and egg scrambles. Avocado toast goes upscale with artisanal multigrain bread, poached egg, Hollandaise sauce and chipotle aioli. If it’s a little later in the day, check out the five-cheese mac and cheese bowl, a spicy chicken club sandwich or the Hangover Burger, with bacon, egg, cheddar cheese and condiments on a brioche bun. Vegans can indulge in the Beyond Burger, with a Beyond Meat patty, lettuce, tomato and avocado. Sharing in a special dining history Sales and marketing manager Michelle Rizzo has been part of the fabric of Lawry’s The Prime Rib for more than a dozen years. The restaurant, which planted roots in L.A. more than 75 years ago, opened its Las Vegas location in 1997 and brought with it a long history of uniquely serving prime rib. “It’s dinner and a show,” says Rizzo. “Expert carvers carve the prime rib tableside from the gleaming silver carts. The carts are also known as the ‘Cadillac of serving carts’ because they cost almost the price of a Cadillac to make them.” Other theatrical experiences—ask about the spinning bowl salad—are just some of the fun and unique benefits that guests enjoy. And when it comes to celebrating special occasions and throwing parties at Lawry’s, that’s when Rizzo steps in, helping create those memories. Rizzo has been in the industry since she was 16, working as a server in her home state of Iowa. She decided to move to Las Vegas after
visiting. “If I’m going to wait tables, Vegas is the place to wait tables, not Iowa,” she says. A few months after landing here in 1995, she joined Morton’s The Steakhouse, where after three years she was promoted from server to associate sales and marketing manager. After 12 years there, she joined Lawry’s to continue her career. “I love the restaurant industry, period. It’s exciting. It’s my job basically to put butts in seats,” she says, laughing. In other words, she’s helping generate revenue for the restaurant. After so many years in the hospitality industry, more than 20 of those years spent in Vegas, Rizzo has learned that “you have to have a strong work ethic to work in a restaurant,” she says. “You really, really do. If you’re lazy, it’s not going to work. You have to have hospitality. Relationship building is really important, especially in my position—it’s those relationships and the referrals you receive. You know, ‘Call Michelle at Lawry’s, she’s got you.’” –Kiko Miyasato

Circa Resort & Casino made its debut last week at the corner of Main and Fremont, creating a game-changing destination in the heart of downtown. Its first phase of opening includes an expansive casino and sportsbook (with the hotel tower opening

Toss in 21 Emmy awards, 11 Guinness World Records, a knighthood from the French government and a “Living Legend” designation from the U.S. Library of Congress. If you’re not yet impressed ... the man was the youngest inductee (at age 12) into the Society of American Magicians, and his hobbies included strolling through the Great Wall of China and making the Statue of Liberty dissolve into the ether. WOLFGANG PUCK When Puck’s L.A. import Spago came to town in 1992, its success opened the floodgates for celebrity chefs in Vegas, making Puck the undisputed king of Vegas dining. Truly, his culinary empire in the city is so vast that his brand should be renamed Starpucks. GORDON RAMSAY Ramsay has done gangbuster business on the Strip. Since opening his first Vegas restaurant, Gordon Ramsay Steak at Paris, four more restaurants seemingly cropped up overnight. As fiery as he is, rarely anything he does goes up in flames. Rather, he’s a guiding light.
GUY FIERI Whenever Vegas dining feels too pretentious, head to Guy Fieri’s Vegas Kitchen & Bar, where no appetite is too big, and no flavor is too bold. Need evidence? You can order a burger with a heaping spoonful of macaroni and cheese slathered on the patty. Case closed. MICHAEL MINA Mina has a quiet influence in the culinary world. His food speaks for itself. From racing to gaming and more, Pole Position Raceway is an all-in-one stop for seekers of entertainment. As long as you’re at least 48 inches tall, get ready for an afternoon of excitement, all made as safe as possible at every turn. Whether you’re an experienced racer or a newcomer, you’ll find plenty to enjoy with Pole Position’s 18-horsepower electric motor go-karts, which can reach speeds of 45 miles per hour. helmet on, you’re led to your kart and strapped in. When the race first starts, everyone begins at a preset speed thanks to supervisors with radio controls—and you might for a second think this is as fast as it gets. But then you begin actually racing your competitors, and

adrenaline takes over. You focus your laser beams on the car in front of you—you’ll do anything to pass them. But be careful; if you cause anyone to spin or turn their car into an obstacle, the entire race team gets slowed down until the kart is back on track. The key here is a careful balance of speed and accuracy. With enough practice, you’ll be overtaking racers in no time. Their fat, F1-inspired performance radials keep you almost glued to the floor as you take hairpin turns as fast as possible to keep ahead of your fellow racers. Hydraulic brakes, maintained to the highest standards, make slowing down a breeze. A few laps and you’ll feel like a pro, always itching for one more race so you can try to beat
the course record. And fun as it is to race against others, it’s also a blast to view the action from the sidelines, where you can play arcade games and a game of four-way air hockey. But there’s now something else at Pole Position that’s guaranteed to divert your attention from the race course: Omni Arena by Virtuix, a virtual reality experience like none other. The built-in staging area set up with unique 360-degree motion platforms will make players feel like they’re entering whole new worlds without ever leaving the platform. Games include Blackbeard (you’re a pirate, of course), Elite Force, in which you fight in a combat arena, or VRZ, where you take on hordes of hungry zombies.
Safety measures require that all participants book a trip, as only 20 people are allowed inside the 60,000-square-foot building every half hour. (Walkins are accepted only within the maximum number of racers per every half-hour time slot.) And don’t worry about your safety at Pole Position: Every kart and every helmet is sanitized between each race, hand sanitizing stations are plentiful, all riders receive individual head socks upon check-in, and food service is suspended until further notice. But the fun factor here is not dampened by the heightened sense of security. After all, it’s just you and your kart—and with a helmet and sock on your head, social distancing is a breeze.

In this installment, we’ll talk about your options if you are staying near Tropicana and Las Vegas Boulevard South. Big tips: Wear walking shoes, because although these places appear pretty close to each other, you’ll still be getting your exercise; and make reservations and get tickets for restaurants, attractions and shows in advance. Allow 15 or 20 minutes between destinations for walking. 8 a.m.: Grab the first coffee of the day at your hotel. Although many

hotels don’t include a coffee maker in the room, there’s always a Starbucks or restaurant that lets you get coffee to go, such as Primrose at Park MGM. 10 a.m.: Although you could make a reservation at one of the restaurants in your hotel, we suggest you take a walk to the picturesque Italian marketplace Eataly Las Vegas at Park MGM (702.730.7617). Get breakfast sandwiches and cornetti (an Italian croissant-like pastry) at Cafe Pasticceria and coffee at Caffé Lavazza next door. Sit at one of the center tables and enjoy Eataly’s atrium atmosphere. 11 a.m.-1 p.m.: Wander through The Park on your way back and check out the statues scattered throughout, including Bliss Dance, a 40-foot-tall sculpture that lights up at night. If you are a gambler, stay at Park MGM and spend some time at the machines.

Important note: it’s the first smoke-free casino in Vegas. 1-2 p.m.: The Big Apple Coaster at New York-New York (702.740.6969) takes off from back in the cityscape area and features a 180-degree twist and dive, plus a 230-foot drop. Weather conditions may affect hours. 2-3 p.m.: After that ride, let your tummy settle as you amble down Tropicana Avenue to Hooters at OYO Hotel & Casino (866.584.6687), where you can indulge in several styles of chicken wings. But there are a ton of other
options, including burgers and the possibly shareable Lots-A-Tots, loaded with cheese, bacon, green onions and sour cream. OMG! Healthier choices include salads and steamed shrimp. 3-5 p.m.: Head to your hotel to nap; or head to Excalibur or Tropicana Las Vegas to gamble for a while. 5-9:30 p.m.: Time for drinks and dinner! Indulge in a craft cocktail at Trago at Tropicana (only on Fridays and Saturdays) while you are waiting for your dinner reservation. We suggest the Negroni Twist. The casual atmosphere at Tom’s Urban at New York-New York (702.740.6766) is perfect for pre-show drinks and dinner; the street tacos are pretty bomb. We’d suggest the loaded tots, but hey, didn’t you just have that at Hooters for lunch? If you are a beer fan, Tom’s has a boatload of choices; and recently introduced a few new cocktails. 10 p.m.: Entertainment is back! In this corner of Vegas, Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club (866.740.7711) opened Nov. 6 at MGM Grand, although it has been relocated to the A and B showrooms to accommodate social distancing and separation between audiences and performers. Garrett features a number of hot comedians and occasionally appears himself. (The 10 p.m. show is only on Fridays and Saturdays, but there’s also a 7 p.m. show those days if you prefer, and an 8 p.m. Sunday show.)

Paul Conforte Xpand Realty’s Paul Conforte is looking to help you expand into the Las Vegas area, and he has plenty of experience in that area. “I’ve been in real estate about 15 years,” Conforte says. “My mom was a Realtor, so it’s been in my blood. At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel that reopens is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that many employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
There may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups and to try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars, and clean escalator rails.
Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down; and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find little bottles of amenities but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested, and at some hotels, won’t be entering during your stay.
Many venues have plexiglass at payment stations, and marks to encourage social distancing while waiting. In addition, fewer patrons may be allowed in at one time.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.
Although venues may differ, most will implement 25-foot spacing between performers and audience members and space between each party to encourage social distancing. Masks are mandatory. There is a limit to the number of people allowed in the venue, per current Nevada rules.
Most restaurants require reservations, although not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have 6 feet between them and the number of customers is fewer. Menus may be digital or one-time use paper menus. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers. Bars will also be spacing patrons’ parties 6 feet apart.

Although the number of attractions in Vegas isn’t as high as a few months ago, sanitation is still high on those that are open, and social distancing is easily seen. For instance, on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.

Powerful History Once you’re inside Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition (Luxor, 702.262.4400), you’ll be immersed in 25,000-square-feet of all things Titanic. While there’s a 22-ton slab of the real ship’s hull, much of the exhibit is anchored by replicas, such as fullscale re-creations of the ship’s Grand Staircase, first-, second- and third-class cabins, and a chilly promenade deck. There’s even a replica of an iceberg. But what ties everything together are the more than 250 artifacts from the wreckage. Some artifacts, such as a first-class room chandelier, show the utter opulence of the ship, while other insignificant objects, such as spectacles, cigarette tins and alligator skin wallets, help create a personal connection to the passengers. And each person who walks through the entrance receives a card with a short biography of a passenger on the ship. Not only does it allow you to live vicariously through that passenger, but now that passenger’s memory lives on through you. –Alex Haase
