Boy, did you pick the right week to visit Las Vegas! A few weeks ago, our Governor, Steve Sisolak, approved larger public gatherings, which opened up the door for live shows to return to the Strip. Several favorites have already reopened: Absinthe at Caesars Palace, “X” Country at Harrah’s and Piff the Magic Dragon at Flamingo, just to name a few. This week, you’ll have even more: Nov. 6 sees the return of David Copperfield, Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club and Jabbawockeez: Timeless at MGM Grand; Carrot Top and Fantasy at Luxor; and The Australian Bee Gees Show: A Tribute to the Bee Gees and Thunder From Down Under at Excalibur. And on Nov. 11, America’s Got Talent finalist and mime extraordinaire Tape Face returns to Harrah’s. As someone who’s been beating the drum for shows to return almost since our Strip shutdown began, I could not be more thrilled for what this represents for Las Vegas. At this point, it’s only a matter of time before we get back even more of our beloved shows and, soon after that, concerts and conventions. Las Vegas has excelled in making sure the Strip is as safe as possible for all visitors, and I have no reason to doubt it will continue to do so. This week’s issue is just packed with fun. You’re going to get a big kick out of our
Q&A with Piff the Magic Dragon (“Don’t Call it a Comeback,” p. 20). The comic magician, whose real name is John van der Put, has a truly wry sense of humor, exemplified by the name of his new show: Too Soon? He talked to Las Vegas Magazine’s Brock Radke about what it means to be back. I’ll just nutshell it: A lot. While trying to decide which show to attend, you might want to relax somewhere with a nice cocktail. Wait until you see our roundup of some of our favorite cocktails on the Las Vegas Strip (“The Booze Benefits,” p. 22). You’ll want to try all of these—trust us. And what would an issue of Las Vegas Magazine be without recommendations to some of the best places in town to get a great meal? We’ve spotlighted Tao Asian Bistro at The Venetian, Yellowtail Japanese Restaurant and Lounge at Bellagio, Edge Steakhouse at Westgate Las Vegas and Mercato della Pescheria at The Grand Canal Shoppes. In addition, you’ll find a look at the recently reopened Titanic: The Exhibition at Luxor, a must-see for fans of the doomed ship’s maiden journey. Our country has a long way to go before it’s completely out of this mess, but if you’re looking for a serious escape from it all, you can’t do better than Las Vegas. Dim sum and small plates are the perfect start to a dining experience that dives into categories from the sea, from the sky and from the land. Indulge in a grilled 12-ounce Imperial wagyu ribeye with yuzu cilantro butter, Peking duck for two or the Thai sweet and spicy shrimp.
Noodle and rice dishes come in many different recipes; there’s also sushi and sashimi, not to mention a robust selection of Tao’s specialty rolls. For dessert, one must-try is the giant fortune cookie served with white and dark chocolate mousse. Definitely invite others to share! –Kiko Miyasato

Sushi Splash If you love fresh fish, one of the best places to get that is at Yellowtail Japanese Restaurant & Lounge. Executive chef Akira Back’s Asian eatery features a number of signature preparations for you to indulge in, from the bigeye tuna pizza to the Popping Spicy crab roll, which, as the name suggests, has Pop Rocks candy inside. Enjoy a variety of shared plates and individual entrées, including the jalapeño yellowtail, with a blood orange sauce; toro caviar with kochuchang (a red chili paste); pork gyoza with tomato salsa; grilled eggplant skewers; filet mignon in a toban skillet; and broiled Atlantic black cod. The dishes fold in Japanese flavors, but you’ll also find a lot of Korean influence and ingredients on the menu. In addition to the Popping Spicy crab roll, there’s yellowtail scallion, the Angry Salmon specialty roll and the Krispy Kalbi specialty roll with Korean short ribs, among many others. To get a little of everything, try the Welcome Back menu, which includes signatures like tuna pizza, Popping Spicy crab or a sushi plate. The omakase tasting is arguably the best way to experience the restaurant, as it includes seven courses and optional sake pairing. –Nina King

Good Food, Good Times For years, the mechanical bull at PBR Rock Bar & Grill was symbolic for having a bucking good time. Unfortunately, until further notice, that bull is yet another casualty of the pandemic. But even though watching strangers fall face first onto a cushioned bull ring was entertaining, that was never the draw. Instead, it’s always been about the delicious cocktails and upscale bar food. Maybe you’ve seen the signature Porch Pounders, a shared cocktail served in a

Powerful History
Luxor exhibit is a sobering reminder of a doomed journey The Titanic is remembered for its hubris. It was the unsinkable ship, a titan of the sea. Yet, ironically, it sunk during its maiden voyage. In a time before the world went numb, before radio, television, and 24-hour news programs began broadcasting tragedy every hour on the hour, the disaster was truly shocking. Considering the fact that most of the reliable sources of information went down with the ship, Titanic was not only submerged in water, but also enveloped in a shroud of mystique. Thankfully, since the discovery of the ship’s wreckage in 1985, a jigsaw puzzle of artifacts have been retrieved to piece together a clearer picture of what it was like on the doomed vessel, and Luxor’s Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition is one of the most informative

and interactive experiences regarding the ship, its construction, its voyage and its fate. Once you’re inside the exhibit, you’ll be immersed into 25,000-square-feet of all things Titanic. While there’s a 22-ton slab of the real ship’s hull, much of the exhibit is anchored by replicas, such as full-scale re-creations of the ship’s Grand Staircase, first-, second- and third-class cabins, and a chilly promenade deck. There’s even a replica of an iceberg. But what ties everything together are the more than 250 artifacts from the wreckage on display. Some artifacts, such as a first-class room chandelier, show the utter opulence of the ship, while other little, insignificant objects, such as spectacles, cigarette tins and alligator skin wallets, help
create a historical and personal connection to the ship’s passengers. And that personal connection is crucial, for one salient reality of the Titanic disaster that’s often overlooked is that real people perished. So much time has passed since that day in 1912 that most of the lives lost are a distant and abstract memory. Thus, the most poignant element of Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition is its focus on the passengers. Each person who walks through the entrance receives a card with a short biography of a passenger on the ship. Not only does it allow you to live vicariously through that real-life passenger, but now that passenger’s story and memory live on through you. –Alex Haase Luxor, 702.262.4400

Steven Kuo
Capturing the American dream Steven Kuo knew only three words when he immigrated to the U.S.: Yes, no and hi. He was 18 years old when he landed in Hawaii from South Korea. Today, Kuo is the general manager of Top of the World at The STRAT. And not only is he running one of the city’s most famous spots, when he joined last year, he helped it become the highest-grossing restaurant in Las Vegas. “There is opportunity in America—if you work your tail off,” he says. “And it takes commitment; you have to have commitment.” And Kuo has that. He eventually moved to Las Vegas in 1999 to pursue a degree from UNLV’s hospitality program. After graduation, he worked seemingly everywhere in the city, from The Mirage and Wynn to Caesars Palace and Aria. He’s even been the owner and chef of his own local Chinese restaurant (he learned cooking from working in his family’s restaurants in Korea and Hawaii). “Being in this industry, it’s in my blood, I guess,” Kuo says.
But after working all over the Strip, “One day I was like, ‘I’ve pretty much done all types of restaurants—casual, café, buffet, fine dining, Italian, Japanese, Chinese—I’ve never once worked at a steakhouse,’” he says. That’s when he applied at Top of the World. “It’s the first time in my career that I’ve had an office with a view. You can’t beat this view.” As the general manager, Kuo says his greatest responsibilities are attending to his guests and supporting his team. He loves meeting new people that come to his restaurant; he’s even been witness to tons of marriage proposals. In regards to his team, he says that, as their manager, it’s important that he stays open-minded and adaptable, and that he always evolves to be the best manager he can be. “It’s not just me, I’m grateful for my bosses and my team members,” he says. “I’m grateful to be here. … I’ve always known, if I put my mind to it, I can get anything done.” –Kiko Miyasato

I was! I won something! I won this TBS show called Tournament of Laughs where we went up against other comedians and somehow we prevailed and emerged the victors. I’ve been doing virtual shows as well, and also … when we were shut down, I thought there was a chance this would go on for a while and when we’d come back,
we’d have to do some shows with people sitting farther away. I thought there was a chance we might end up doing the show in the big room for less people, so why don’t we spend six months working on a brandnew show that will fit in a larger showroom. It turns out that was a good idea. What was that like, the process of moving from the smaller cabaret room to the big Flamingo Showroom? For the last two years, we’ve been playing these larger theaters on the road and coming back to the small room (at Flamingo). I’ve always loved playing those comedy clubs because of how close the audience is, but it does limit what you can do. Suddenly we can do all these huge things we’ve been doing on tour, which are much more like the material we’ve been developing. Creatively it’s great. Was it difficult to develop that new material and stay creative when you were basically stuck at home for months? It was difficult to stay positive. That’s what I found. Speaking to my friends from all walks of life, performers and people

outside the industry, no one was doing OK. The creative part was easy because we had a two-year to-do list and finally had the time to make it happen, even though it felt slightly crazy to be working on those things. It was a bit like building Noah’s Ark. I would be, “The shows are coming back!” And everyone was like, “Really?” But we did it, we built the ark, and we’re ready to sail. Did you bake bread or plant a garden or develop other quarantine skills? I realized I was either going to put on a hundred pounds and never leave the house again or I would have to get healthy; there was no in-between. So I got a trainer, put a gym in the other garage and over the last seven months I lost 40 pounds and learned how to do pull-ups. I’m glad I went in that direction.

You may notice some guests (including yourself) headed straight to the elevators. That’s because contactless check-in is no longer a thing of the future. At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel that reopens is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that many employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
There may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups and to try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars, and clean escalator rails.
Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down; and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find little bottles of amenities but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested, and at some hotels, won’t be entering during your stay.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.
Although venues may differ, most will implement 25-foot spacing between performers and audience members and space between each party to encourage social distancing. Masks are mandatory. There is a limit to the number of people allowed in the venue, per current Nevada rules.
Most restaurants require reservations, although not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have 6 feet between them and the number of customers is fewer. Menus may be digital or one-time use paper menus. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers. Bars will also be spacing patrons’ parties 6 feet apart.

Although the number of attractions in Vegas isn’t as high as a few months ago, sanitation is still high on those that are open, and social distancing is easily seen. For instance, on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.
One of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room, and hotels have been using this option for many years now. Look at your bill, OK it if all is correct, and get a copy emailed to you. If you have a physical key, most hotels will allow you to leave it in the room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.
While you’re here in Las Vegas, there are several things you can do to help keep yourself well and decrease the chances of you or someone else getting sick. Give yourself a self-check before you arrive. Do you have a fever? A cough? Is your sense of smell normal? You must now wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. It helps stem the spread of potentially deadly viruses like
