2020 presented unique challenges, yet PENTA continued to rise above them and continue to work while protecting the organization’s biggest asset: their employees. COVID-19 forced radical change to the entire construction industry. PENTA acted quickly to redefine processes at all job sites to assure that they could continue work, including mandatory health screenings of all employees prior to entering the job site, education for all employees on the CDC’s and OSHA’s COVID-19 risk mitigation practices and requirements, assigning a full-time COVID-19 risk mitigation officer at each site and hiring sanitation specialists to disinfect all common areas and shared tools/equipment. This thoughtful mentality extends to each community where PENTA works. In 2019, PENTA’s charitable organization PENTA CARES donated more than $900,000 and organized 335 volunteers, who served approximately 3,000 hours with more than 40 nonprofits. Funds and volunteer efforts conducted by employees and family members directly contribute to organizations that provide aid to issues such as food insecurity, veteran services, homelessness and childhood cancer. PENTA has donated over $8 million to 350 charities since 2000.

n From its laborers to project managers, Martin-Harris Construction fosters a company culture focused on safety. MHC has been committed to keeping its workplace as safe as possible for over four decades and believes that project excellence is only achievable when safe practices are learned, drilled and followed every day. The MHC safety team and on-site supervisors are trained to manage incidents for the benefit of its associates, as well as their families. MHC uses software technology for site safety audits, which are conducted daily by the site superintendent and once a week by the safety team. Management is trained not only to inspect the job site, but outside the fence as well for public safety. Every worker and visitor must sit through a site-specific safety orientation prior to coming on-site, and daily activity hazard analyses are required by the site teams. This year has also introduced new

safety concerns with COVID-19. MHC president Guy Martin joined a group of construction industry stakeholders assembled by Gov. Steve Sisolak to develop best practices in protecting against the coronavirus. Key company leaders and the MHC safety department immediately developed a COVID-19 Action Plan and assembled a “Manager’s Roundtable” to proactively address potential job site issues as a result of the virus. Attention to detail and proper planning allowed MHC to effectively continue work during a sensitive time, particularly on the high-profile Las Vegas Convention Center Phase Two. The facility, which is nearly 60 years old, is undergoing an upgrade and expansion to add an additional 1.4 million square feet to the facility and create a striking new look for the building. U.S. 95 REALIGNMENT PROJECT GOLDFIELD, NV AMES CONSTRUCTION

n The U.S. 95 Realignment Project near Goldfield, Nevada, was completed by Ames Construction to realign 2.5 miles of the existing highway in preparation of the Gemfield Mine site. The project goals included completing all phases safely with no incidents, achieving substantial completion on an accelerated time frame, minimizing impacts to the traveling public, complying with all applicable environmental requirements and all federal, state and county laws and ordinances, and obtaining all necessary approvals for acceptance by NDOT for the completed work. Because of the location, Ames encountered several challenges throughout the course of the project, including access to construction water, project staffing, material logistics, existing utilities and on-site raw materials, as well as completing final paving during the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to address this, Ames developed a project-

n Construction-industry veteran Rebecca Fountain founded general contracting firm KOR Building Group in 2013 with a focus on residential renovations, government contracting, hotel remodels and commercial construction. Perhaps of equal importance, Fountain built KOR on

specific COVID-19 Safety Mitigation Plan to ensure that the work was completed safely and without impacts to the local community. Ames Construction was able to complete the project with approximately 39,000 hours worked, not including subcontractors, with no lost-time accidents. The project was on time, nearly $2.5 million under budget and will have a direct impact on the local economy. “The project is expected to drive the creation of hundreds of direct and indirect jobs in the region, including about 200 contract workers for varying periods during mine construction and approximately 150 employees during the project’s mine life,” said Andrew Conover, director of execution projects at Gemfield Resources. “The increase in income earnings from the future Gemfield Mine will be a major economic benefit to the local economy.”

The project was the first officially permitted use of shipping containers as permanent homes in Southern Nevada and was fully funded and built by support and donations from local companies. â€œThis project demonstrates our appreciation for our veterans, our passion for Las Vegas and our commitment to the communities that we serve,â€? said Kallen Kildea, president of Builders United. With more than 25 years of experience, Builders United is a diverse team of professional builders guided by the principles of high performance, dedication to the craft and innovative ingenuity. It has completed over 1,500 large and specialty projects. The company leverages education, technol-

ogy and systems to deliver a superior customer experience, with a focus on development, ground-up construction, tenant improvement, renovation and remodeling services for commercial, medical, government and hospitality clients. For the Veterans Village Proud Mary Fogerty Container Home project, Builders United donated the build-out and placement of 10 homes that were built from 160- to 320-square-foot shipping containers. Each home has handicap-accessible interiors featuring a full kitchenette, bathroom with shower, dining area and sleeping quarters. The entire village runs on solar power, and each unit has full plumbing, HVAC and electrical services. Builders United hopes that this small container home village serves as a prototype for sustainable, low-cost, affordable housing units in other cities.

Building Project of the Year ($15-$30 million)

PACCAR PARTS DISTRIBUTION CENTER MARTIN-HARRIS CONSTRUCTION

n The PACCAR Parts Distribution Center in North Las Vegas, completed by Martin-Harris Construction, sits on 18 acres and consists of a 253,000-square-foot distribution area that includes a 20,000-square-foot mezzanine and an 8,900-square-foot office. The project site features an exterior covered courtyard adjacent to the office break room, desert landscaping, architectural split face CMU site walls with steel picket fence and vehicle-access sliding steel electrically operated site gates. There were several considerations during the design and construction process to ensure high-performance sustainability, including the utilization of fly ash in the concrete for all tilt panel walls, slab on grade, concrete paving and site concrete. Another key factor was utilizing LED fixtures

and low-flow plumbing fixtures for minimal light pollution and water consumption. Lastly, a 300-kilowatt photovoltaic solar array (760 high-efficiency solar panels) was installed on the warehouse roof to help reduce energy consumption. During the preconstruction process, Martin-Harris collaborated with the project stakeholders, architect and design consultants to address issues related to design and constructability, project planning, scheduling, logistics planning, cost analysis and budget control, project management, health and public safety, and quality assurance and control. This design-build approach resulted in minimal challenges during construction and illustrates how proper planning prior to construction leads to project success for all stakeholders.

Building Project of the Year (over $30 million)

CAESARS FORUM CONVENTION CENTER THE PENTA BUILDING GROUP n Caesars Forum Convention Center, constructed by The PENTA Building Group, is a 550,000 square-foot LEED Gold Certified conference facility. The $365 million conference center sits on 24.5 acres and is the first facility of its size built on one level. It includes the two largest pillar-less ballrooms in North America—each at 110,000 square feet with 315-foot clear span trusses. Additionally, the facility includes more than 300,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, two 40,000-square-foot ballrooms, six state-of-the-art boardrooms, 100,000 square feet of multipurpose outdoor space known as The FORUM Plaza and three pedestrian bridges. Caesars Forum had an incredibly aggressive construction deadline. The 18-month project was accelerated to 15 months due to a six-month permitting delay. To accommodate the expedited timeline, PENTA conducted work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This required constant communication with the client and subcontractors to coordinate schedules and ensure tasks were completed safely and as efficiently as possible. The forum can hold the equivalent of seven football fields. The sheer massiveness of the project required a safety program of the same scale. Having a robust program was PENTA’s top priority from Day One. The strict compliance to

these high-level safety standards resulted in just six recordable incidents, with zero lost time. The project was completed on budget and ahead of schedule. With the goal of a LEED Silver rating, the design of the building’s mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems—in addition to equipment and material selections—were favorable to efficiency and environmentally conscious products. Material selections included those with low VOC emissions, locally sourced materials and LEED-certified products. On the construction side, PENTA implemented a waste management program to recycle construction waste generated onsite, reuse asphalt materials removed during demolition and recycle steel materials demolished for bridge construction. Additionally, an indoor air-quality management program was implemented to monitor and minimize construction activities from impacting air quality during construction and protect HVAC ductwork from construction dust. PENTA was able to obtain the point requirements for LEED Silver and acquired additional points in other areas, such as providing a complete air flush of the HVAC system over a specified amount of time. These additional points allowed PENTA to ultimately achieve a LEED Gold rating for the project.

n Fasteners Inc. has been a proud member of the NCA since 1993 and has made a concerted effort to increase its presence and role within the organization. Fasteners has actively recruited new members in hopes to help continue to grow the association. Aside from active participation in the NCA’s events over the past year, Fasteners also contributed a significant amount of employee support for NCA committees—including Fasteners corporate counsel, C.J. Potter, Esq., serving on the Government Affairs committee—and employee volunteers for charitable events. Fasteners employee Christopher Roby assumed the community outreach lead position for the NCA in 2019, where he organized and executed a successful event with local charity Sleep in Heavenly Peace, which builds and donates

bunk beds to households that cannot afford separate beds for each of their children. As a result of the Bunk Bed Builds sponsored by Fasteners, Sleep in Heavenly Peace has delivered over 40 bunk beds to children in need. The event also allowed for 40 NCA members and their families to experience beginner tool work while providing a tremendous service to the children of the community. Fasteners has committed to being a drop-off location for Operation Backpack and is supporting the event by donating the most needed school items for the drive. In addition, employees of Fasteners have donated over 2,500 respiratory masks to local schools and hospitals, as well as other local organizations such as the Salvation Army and Cure 4 The Kids Children’s Cancer Treatment Center to provide aid during COVID-19.

n Longtime industry leader Keith Mantis founded and was the principal owner of Fasteners Inc. A true entrepreneur with a tireless work ethic, Mantis started San Diego Fasteners in a storage unit in San Diego in 1987. In 1993, Mantis founded Fasteners Inc. Southwestern Supply in Las Vegas and grew the company to one of the construction supply industry’s largest and most well-respected organizations. At the core of Mantis’ personal and professional beliefs was the commitment to supporting and inspiring the success of others. He joined Nevada Contractors Association in 1993 and supported numerous NCA charitable and educational

causes over the past 27 years. Specifically, Mantis donated to the Michael T. Martin Memorial Scholarship, and supported the NCA educational House of Cards event and Construction Career Day. He also supported NCA events and encouraged his employees to participate in NCA committees. Mantis’ leadership was not only visible through his dedication within his organizations and the construction industry, but also with his presence and deliberate actions. He remained active in his firms until his passing in April 2020, dedicated to supporting his son Michael Mantis’ transition to leadership of the family operation.
