From the Editor Better Times Ahead
In last week’s editor’s note, I lamented the ongoing absence of our city’s amazing entertainers and productions. I’d like to think Nevada’s Governor, Steve Sisolak, heard me loud and clear. Mere days later, Sisolak announced that he was raising the capacity for gatherings to a maximum of 250 people—effectively paving the way for the reopening of live entertainment here! It might still be awhile before we get any announcement of shows or entertainers returning to the Strip—showrooms and theaters inside casinos must submit safety plans and adjust operations to abide by the newly announced protocols—but this is very, very good news for those hungry for the return of shows like The Beatles LOVE, Carrot Top and David Copperfield, among countless others. While we anxiously await their return, in the meantime we can rejoice in the fact that Las Vegas has so much to offer those who decided to visit our city this week. For starters, sightseers and photo enthusiasts can plan an outdoor vacation thanks to Las Vegas Magazine’s Alex Haase (“Nine Ways to Explore the Outdoors in Las Vegas,” p. 26), or get ready to Instagram the photos they take of the new Bellagio Conservatory exhibit (“Fall in Love With Fall,” p. 20) or the new Museum of Dream Space at The Venetian (“Into Another
World,” p. 18), both written by managing editor Nina King. If you’re here to do some shopping at Las Vegas’ amazing stores, associate editor Kiko Miyasato has everything laid out for you in her shopping roundup (“Adventures in Retail,” p. 24). In this issue, we’ll also introduce you to world-famous decorator Jonathan Adler, who has designed not only some custom pieces for sale at Flamingo, but also the interior of Flamingo’s dazzling new restaurant, Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse. (Find our Q&A with Adler on p. 10.) And how could we put out an issue of Las Vegas Magazine without saying something about its amazing dining scene? We’ll introduce you to Catch at Aria, known as much for its celebrity scene as its dishes; Gordon Ramsay’s iconic Hell’s Kitchen restaurant at Caesars Palace (yes, there are red and blue kitchens!); The Steak House at Circus Circus, as big a Vegas dining institution as you’re likely to find here; and Noodles at Bellagio, a perfect restaurant when you’re not exactly sure what type of Asian cuisine you’re in the mood for (they have it all!) Yes, it’s a time of excitement for our city, and even though we’re not back 100 percent yet, you certainly won’t lack for things to do while you’re here.

flamingo. I just took that iconography and ran with it. You spent more than 100 hours on that piece. How do you have the patience to spend that much time on a creation? Oh, bless you—I’m not beading it myself. I’m lucky enough to work with some amazing artisans; I travel around the world to find the best craftspeople. In India, I found this dude who literally sees the world through beads. He can add dimension and an unexpected soul to any motif through his beading. Each piece he makes is hand-beaded on linen ground and takes nearly 100 hours to create.

World-famous designer discusses Flamingo projects Famed designer Jonathan Adler has lent his talents to the iconic Flamingo. The artist created new retail items, including an exclusive lamp that will be installed in newly renovated rooms, inspired by the resort’s namesake bird. Adler also created stunning artwork for the new Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse, a custom hand-beaded flamingo piece (pictured above). Las Vegas Magazine’s Kiko Miyasato recently asked Adler about his relationship with the property and his artistic contributions.
How does it feel to have your very own artwork and design pieces inside such an iconic Las Vegas hotel? It’s all very surreal. When I first started out as a potter, my main vision of my future included me hawking my wares at a rain-soaked craft fair. Everything that has happened beyond that, including this partnership with the Flamingo, has exceeded my wildest expectations. My career has an unbridled creative odyssey, and I wouldn’t change a minute of it.
How did your relationship with the Flamingo come about? When the Flamingo calls, you pick up the phone. It’s such an iconic part of Vegas, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to design this collection, and to play with the Flamingo iconography.
You’ve put your own twist on the iconic flamingo—where did that design inspiration come from? A lot of the inspiration came from the flamingo itself. Flamingos are so stylized that they’re a treat for any designer. God hit it out of the park and did a lot of work when he designed the

Can you share with us a little of your thought process and creative process when designing a piece? I’ve been sheltering on Shelter Island in New York for six months, and I can honestly say I’ve never been more inspired by nature. I often hop on my paddleboard for a long aquatic adventure and just let the inspiration come to me. I wish I had a better answer, but the truth is that creativity is an unpredictable sprite who visits when it wants to visit. Have you been a frequent visitor to Las Vegas over your life? When you’re in town where do you like to go? What do you enjoy experiencing? The thing I love most about Las Vegas is it has a real sense of place. It doesn’t feel like anywhere in the world except itself. When my husband, Simon Doonan, and I visit we always stay at the Flamingo (natch) and just soak in all the high-octane glamour.

Crossroads of Flavor The American South is known for two things: the blues and comfort food. There are Robert Johnson and shrimp and grits, Son House and seafood gumbo, Charley Patton and crawfish pie. Those things go together so well, and here in the Southwest, House of Blues Restaurant has a little bit of both. But mostly, when you have the blues, you come here for comfort food. Maybe even a little Southern Comfort. Start off with the Voodoo Shrimp, which is sautéed in an Abita Amber (a New Orleans beer) reduction sauce, and served over jalapeño cornbread. But if you’re not a fan of seafood, bib up and dig into the Carolina Mess, a pile of crispy fries topped with pulled pork, jalapeños, cheddar cheese and brown gravy. If your belly isn’t full by then, move on to entrées like the chicken and andouille sausage jambalaya, crispy fried chicken served with bourbon butter, or a clever twist on shrimp and grits— sautéed shrimp in a chipotle cream sauce and served on a cojita cheese grit cake. Wash it all down with a Crossroads Cadillac Margarita, which is topped with a mini bottle of Grand Marnier. –Alex Haase

Pump Up the Fun
Shaking Things Up Black Tap Burgers & Beer is known for more than burgers and beer. Actually, you’re likely to be lured in by their enormous, decadent and Instagrammable CrazyShakes, because there’s truly nothing more appealing than a shake bedazzled with rainbow sprinkles and topped with a fat slice of funfetti cake. And don’t think you’re off the hook from ordering a CrazyShake because you’re vegan. They have a vegan shake the size of a candy factory for you, too.

But even if those over-the-top shakes brought you to Black Tap, make it a point to try the burgers—they’re tamer than the shakes, but equally eye-popping. Old-school steakhouse specializes in making memories Maybe it’s the décor, including old-school leather booths, white tablecloths and dark woods. House, which is mere years away from celebrating its 40th anniversary (it opened in 1982). One meal and you’ll understand why. Start your experience with a classic cocktail like a lemon drop, Manhattan or Cosmo. All are exactly as you would expect from an old-school restaurant—satisfying and comforting. And starters are uniformly excellent, from oysters on the half shell and jumbo shrimp on ice to French onion soup and the Seafood Sensation (an oysters, crab and shrimp selection). Whether you go wet- or dry-aged, buckle up and get ready for some serious flavors, whether you opt for New York strip, porterhouse, ribeye
on the bone or filet mignon. Pairing any of these with sauteed mushrooms or a lobster tail is highly recommended. Prime rib fans should definitely try the version here—for starters, it’s huge. But the flavor here is also unbelievable. With or without horseradish, you’ll be savoring every single bite. There’s also plenty for non-steak fans, from a salmon fillet or a sweet chili-glazed salmon to chicken breast and lamb chops. The dessert is as classic as the rest of the experience. More to Love If the group you’re with knows they want Asian food but can’t decide whether Japanese, Chinese or Korean is most to their liking, it’s time to go to Noodles. The Pan-Asian restaurant’s menu is packed with favorites from many different cuisines—meaning drinks like Thai iced tea, two types of hot tea, sake, beer from China and Japan and wine from all over the world. You can even indulge in classic American cocktails if you so choose. Appetizers range from the Malaysian-style roti prata to tempura and pot stickers. There’s even kimchi. Maybe a noodle soup is in order, but will you try Thai, Japanese Szechuan, Vietnamese, Cantonese or Mandarin? There are fried noodles like chow mein, Penang-fried kway teow and Pad Thai, plus fried rices from Malaysia and China. For even heartier dishes, go for Maine live lobster with salt-and-pepper fried shallots, salt-and-pepper shrimp; beef, shrimp, chicken and tofu, prepared with sauces including kung pao, sweet-and-sour and black bean. Get Craic Good times await at Rí Rá, an authentic Irish pub which was literally built in Ireland and shipped to Vegas. So, since you can’t make it to the Emerald Isle any time soon to experience the cozy neighborhood pubs, you’ll find some semblance of the real thing right here. And, as you might have guessed, the drink menu is vast, with the gamut of Irish beers and a long list of Scotch whisky. Into Another World The dynamic, interactive Museum of Dream Space (MODS), consisting of six separate display rooms, is inspired both by the advent of digital art and by the work of Yayoi Kusama. In 2015, her Infinity Mirrors art installations brought her even more fame. One vivid piece, “Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity,” featured candles in a black background reflected myriad times—and you can see the inspiration from this piece in MODS.
Installations range from a poppy feel to decidedly moody, with some digital pieces acting almost like a traditional canvas, encouraging reflection and introspection. GM gets back into the swing of things Finally, in early June, Chris Hall stepped back inside Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse at Golden Nugget. As the general manager, he watched the doors close in March due to the coronavirus shutdown. “I was getting bored at home,” he says. “You can only watch Tiger King so many times. But, fortunately, we were busy again from the get-go. It’s been good. But, it’s also been tough because we miss some of the staff that we want to bring back. That’s a goal, to get to the point where we can bring everyone back.” Hall knows what it takes to run a successful restaurant, both from the kitchen and the dining room. The Michigan native graduated from culinary school and started his career path as a chef in Oregon, moving to Las Vegas for its stellar reputation in the hospitality industry. After working in kitchens at properties including Palms Place, Hooters and Station Casinos, for the past seven years he’s been in management for the front of the house. He joined the
Landry’s corporation, first as assistant general manager at Trevi at The Forum Shops at Caesars, and for the past two years he’s been the manager for Vic & Anthony’s. When it comes to his management responsibilities, he says he’s firm but fair with his staff. “I’m a stickler for service and creating that guest experience—creating those guest experiences is my favorite part of the job,” Hall says. “And our servers—which 90 percent have been here since day one—help make that happen. Our service is second to none. Their food, wine and beverage knowledge is awesome.” And now that Vic & Anthony’s is on its way to getting back to some sense of normalcy, Hall and his team can get back to doing what they do best. “The best part about Vegas is everybody’s always celebrating something,” he says. “People want that Vegas experience, to have that once-in-a-lifetime trip, and to be able to be a part of that again feels good.” –Kiko Miyasato

Golden Hour from 5 to 7 p.m. offers half-off various beer buckets and half-price bottles of prosecco and rosé. If conversation or some flirting isn’t enough to get you through the evening, Crimson offers some vintage fun by bringing in coin-operated arcade games like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and the infamous “claw” machine. While the lounge is situated poolside, swimming is not encouraged. Las Vegas outpost of Rao’s has perfected the Italian meal Las Vegas’ population includes quite a few New York City transplants. If you were to poll a small sample, we’d wager that one of the things that most excites them about Las Vegas is that it has the only other Rao’s Italian restaurant in the entire country. And if you’re at all familiar with the original location in New York City, you’d get what the excitement is about. Opened in 1896, it’s not only one of the oldest family-owned restaurants, it’s also one of the hardest places to get a table. The Las Vegas outpost at Caesars Palace is much easier to get into, but no less spectacular in both its décor and its food. It’s a much more open space than its counterpart, including a patio dining area, center bar, and private dining area. (In a very cool nod to the original, there’s a replica of the 12-table space.) Professionalism dominates in every area of the Rao’s experience, from the staff that greets you to the attentive servers. Rao’s prides itself on making you feel like you’re the only table in the place, and we’d be hard-pressed to think of an establishment that does it better. You’d better come hungry, because your food arrives in a very prompt manner. But don’t let that deter you from enjoying a cocktail like an All in the Family, featuring Grey Goose Le Citron vodka, limoncello, fresh lemon and club soda, or an E. 114th, a delicious blend of Knob Creek single barrel reserve, vermouth, Montenegro amaro, filthy black cherries and bitters, before your meal arrives. For carnivores, you have to try the Rao’s Traditional Meatballs as an appetizer. Made with ground veal, pork and beef, these
nearly baseball-sized babies are fork-tender and smothered with marinara. They’re also guaranteed to leave an empty bowl behind every time. There’s plenty of worthy main courses, including a sensational chicken Parmesan served over pasta, frutti di mare (linguini accompanied by Maine lobster, shrimp, calamari, Manila clams, marinara and chili flakes), and a world-beating beef lasagna, highlighted by beef Bolognese sauce, ricotta, Parmesan and mozzarella. Meat lovers will flip over the filet mignon Marsala, served over a heavenly Parmesan risotto and topped with mushroom Marsala. And fowl fans definitely need to order Uncle Vincent’s Lemon Chicken, a Rao’s signature sensation featuring a charcoal-broiled bone-in chicken with Uncle Vincent’s Famous Lemon Sauce. Trust us, you’ve never tasted anything like this. Dessert is practically a must here— you cannot have a decadent Italian meal and not finish off with some serious calories, am I right? And the New York cheesecake, flavored with just the perfect touch of lemon, fills that bill perfectly. Naturally, you can go slightly less heavy with the tiramisu, and it’s just as thrilling, packed with espresso-soaked lady fingers, mascarpone mousse and cocoa powder.

Shadow Creek golf course hosts relocated PGA Tour tournament
In a year where attending a pro sporting event is not likely, watching those same sports can seem like the pinnacle of luxury. Such is the case with The CJ Cup@Nine Bridges, a respected professional golf tournament in the PGA Tour that is played in Korea. With COVID-19’s effects causing cancellations of many events, it seemed as if the tournament might suffer the same fate. But earlier this year, PGA Tour officials and sponsor CJ Group put their heads together and found a perfect way to keep the event alive for 2020: The tournament would move to Las Vegas and be played Oct.

It’s a move that will work out well for both the players and the television audience, said Ty Votaw, PGA Tour executive vice president, international, in a release announcing the move. “While our players have always looked forward to visiting Korea, the current circumstances provided this new opportunity to bring the event to Las Vegas, which will also provide brand exposure and awareness to the viewing audience in the United States and around the globe. We are thankful for the partnership and support that CJ Group and the Korean
PGA have shown in view of the circumstances.” And holding the cup this week is perfect timing, considering the PGA Tour’s Shriners Hospital for Children Open ends Oct. 11, meaning top players will already be in town for the TPC Summerlin event. At Shadow Creek, an MGM Resorts-owned property that is open only to guests at the company’s properties, the 78-player field will include the Asian Tour Order of Merit’s highest-ranked Korean nationality player, players from the KPGA, the Official World Golf Ranking’s top-three available players of Korean nationality,
leading players in the 201920 FedExCup points list, and others. Defending champion Justin Thomas, who won the inaugural tournament in 2017 and 2019’s as well, said earlier in the year, “The CJ Cup quickly became one of my favorite events on tour … the hospitality shown to us by CJ Group and the Korean community has made the tournament special to all of us as PGA Tour players.” In the U.S., CJ Group operates Bibigo restaurants and also has a line of products designed to showcase Korean food. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel that reopens is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that many employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
There may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups and to try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars, and clean escalator rails.
Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down; and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find little bottles of amenities but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested, and at some hotels, won’t be entering during your stay.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.
There is a limit to the number of people allowed in the area and there is space between each party to encourage social distancing. Each area is sanitized between each party.
Most restaurants require reservations, although not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have 6 feet between them and the number of customers is fewer. Menus may be digital or one-time use paper menus. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers. Bars will also be spacing patrons’ parties 6 feet apart.

Although the number of attractions in Vegas isn’t as high as a few months ago, sanitation is still high on those that are open, and social distancing is easily seen. For instance, on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.
One of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room, and hotels have been using this option for many years now. Look at your bill, OK it if all is correct, and get a copy emailed to you. If you have a physical key, most hotels will allow you to leave it in the room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.
While you’re here in Las Vegas, there are several things you can do to help keep yourself well and decrease the chances of you or someone else getting sick. Give yourself a self-check before you arrive. Do you have a fever? A cough? Is your sense of smell normal? You must now wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. It helps stem the spread of potentially deadly viruses like
COVID-19. It’s also considerate of fellow guests and resort workers.

Delicious Hot Spot No matter how long you wait to get inside Vanderpump Cocktail Garden (Caesars Palace, 702.731.7867), you’ll be glad to step inside. Elegant decor and rustic furniture provide a cozy vibe. Also, the Vanderpump menu is on point. Fancy specialty cocktails fill the menu, some even matching Lisa Vanderpump’s reality show persona, like the Checkmate Bitch, inspired by the phrase she uttered regarding one of her memorable run-ins with Faye Resnick on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. The drink is sweet and spicy, mixed with hot vodka, jalapeño liqueur, grapefruit liqueur, pineapple, vanilla citrus, Angostura bitters and pink peppercorns. Then there are the small bites. Particular highlights include the Manchego cheese-stuffed bacon-wrapped dates, the crispy chicken sliders and the goat cheese balls, served with a small Belgian endive salad on the side.
