From the Editor In the know
A good friend of mine works full-time for a ride-sharing app, so he spends plenty of time conversing with tourists in Las Vegas. And a few weeks into the reopening of the Las Vegas Strip, he told me something interesting: Some of his passengers, on their way to the airport, had the following feedback to offer: “The Strip is boring.” Needless to say, I was surprised. Of all the adjectives I’ve heard used to describe the Strip, “boring” has never been one of them. But in a way, I suppose I get where some of those guests are coming from; after all, our shows and concerts, which shut down in March, have not returned, and a return date for any live entertainment has not yet been announced. If you came here expecting live entertainment, you would have left sorely disappointed. Which brings me to the point of this week’s letter: In order to get the maximum amount of enjoyment out of Las Vegas, you have to be prepared. You have to do your research, and you have to know what to expect. And that’s where Las Vegas Magazine comes in. For decades, this magazine has been the authority on what to do, see, experience, feel, taste and touch on the Las Vegas Strip and beyond. We introduce you to the personalities you’ll meet; give you insider tips on where to get the best cocktails; and
show you how the Strip works in ways you could never have imagined. Our magazine is currently digital-only in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, but our commitment to informing our readers is the same. In this week’s issue, we’ll introduce you to the hottest new restaurant in town; take you through an experience at one of the Strip’s highest-end spas; and take you on a tour of some of the locales you’ve seen in your favorite Las Vegas-based movies. You look at Las Vegas differently after skimming our pages. But don’t take our word for it. French Connection Michael Mina’s French restaurant Bardot Brasserie at Aria is one of those spots that makes you feel you’ve been transported to another place—in this case, a cafe complete with plush red seating and dark woodwork that feels as if it’s been transported straight from a Paris corner. Mina has designed a menu that hits so many French classics but isn’t afraid to have a little fun with his food, as with the pop tarte flambée, a bite oozing with cheese and a

creamy sauce. One of Bardot’s most striking appetizers may be the steak tartare, served with gaufrette potato chips, which are made to order. Seafood lovers will delight in the two sizes of seafood platters, with oysters, shrimp, king crab and Maine lobster. Bardot also has a new three-course Welcome Back prix fixe menu that features some of the most popular items on the restaurant’s menu, like Maine lobster bisque with brandy, steak frites au poivre or a half
roasted chicken, and a chocolate macaron with chocolate mousse. For vegetarians, you’ll find the gnocchi Parisienne with Provencal vegetables and Boursin cheese on both the prix fixe and regular dinner menus. The brunch menu here features many of the greatest hits from dinner, plus omelettes, decadent French toast (you can even order foie gras as an accompaniment), croque madame and a cheese plate. –Nina King

Diverse Flavors The Tom behind Tom’s Urban, Tom Ryan, is an interesting presence in the restaurant business. He’s not a chef, but he’s the brain behind Smashburger, and he’s credited with creating the McDonald’s McGriddle and Pizza Hut’s Stuffed Crust Pizza, so he knows a thing or two about flavor combinations. With that said, Tom has a strong sense of creativity, as well as a desire to elevate American food with diverse flavors, and it’s clearly expressed in his dishes. Tom’s Urban’s menu offers plates like a Kansas City-style barbecue chicken pizza and Xiangxiang crispy duck wings slathered with a hoisin glaze. But the crispy chicken and cornbread pancake is what really shines. The sweet cornbread pancake crumbles underneath Nashville hot chicken, and while your first bite might pack some heat, salted caramel butter and maple syrup help subdue the spice, creating a spicy-sweet flavor explosion. –Alex Haase New York-New York, 702.740.6766
Fresh and Delicious Fare It might still be some time before celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis’ eponymous fine-dining restaurant at The Cromwell will return (the property has not yet reopened in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic), but, don’t worry—you can still experience her brilliant culinary skills at her fast-casual eatery, Pronto by Giada. Pronto gives guests the option of either taking their Italian fare to go or settling into one of the cozy tables that the eatery provides. The menu is packed with so many

Guy Fieri’s Linq restaurant offers over-the-top creations Pure, unadulterated fun. That pretty much sums up the philosophy and the food of Guy Fieri—he wants to ramp up ordinary food to the max, and there’s absolutely no trace of pretension in anything he does. That philosophy has made many in the food community raise a skeptical eyebrow, but it hasn’t mattered a bit—Fieri has amassed fans by the millions. Even people who have never eaten at a Fieri restaurant are fans, thanks to his ubiquitous presence on television on shows such as Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. But Las Vegas visitors can enjoy the full Flavortown experience at Guy

A Cut Above
Steakhouse continues strong run 20 years in Emeril Lagasse’s impact on Las Vegas cannot be overstated. His restaurants on the Las Vegas Strip are all institutions where quality is never in question, and if you doubt the staying power of his brand, look no further than Delmonico Steakhouse, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. It’s a steakhouse experience to remember, excelling in every department. Its impeccably detailed dining room hints at the pleasures to come, and the appetizer list starts things off right with such offerings as apple-cured Kurobota bone-in bacon (drizzled with Abita root beer glaze and served with a pickled watermelon rind) and truffle and Parmesan potato chips.

Pairing these with a cocktail is practically mandatory, and Delmonico’s menu groups its cocktails according to your preference. Want something refreshing? How about a Strawberry Fields, featuring strawberry-infused gin, wild cherry aperitif, basil syrup, lemon and soda? Maybe you want something strong? Try the Black Magic, Sazerac rye whiskey, dry orange Curacao, Amer aperitif and bitters. Main courses are definitely meat-forward here, most coming from Creekstone Farms. Highlights include the 16-ounce Prime ribeye, 16-ounce Prime boneless New York Strip and the tournedos “au poivre,” naturally raised Angus petit filet medallions. But you can satisfy your
seafood craving with crispy skin Scottish salmon or a roasted Maine lobster tail or, if your taste leans more toward fowl, the herb-marinated chicken breast. Of the sides available, make sure you try the Delmonico creamed spinach, so decadent you’ll want it all for yourself. By now, most of you know about the amazing Emeril’s banana cream pie, and we wouldn’t blame you for making this your dessert choice. But pecan pie is a very close second, drizzled with caramel sauce to put it completely over the edge. If you’ve been missing dim sum, then you’ll want to head straight out to Ping Pang Pong at the Gold Coast. The Chinese restaurant has garnered an excellent reputation over the years it has been open (it was named one of the Top 10 Chinese restaurants in America by Travel + Leisure Magazine), and dim sum here is sought after. Although you may notice some changes due to COVID-19 restrictions, the plush, intimate dining room still welcomes you in. The same flavorful, fragrant dishes like barbecue pork bao will be presented to you. If you want a traditional dish, there are an enormous number from which to choose. Get vegetable spring rolls, pork pot stickers and chicken lettuce cups for starters. Head into the main event with orange chicken or beef, sweet or sour pork or walnut prawns. But you can also expand your horizons with half a roast duck; XO calamari and lotus root; and clay pot rice with ginger, chicken and mushroom. Double-braised sea bass hot pot simmers the fish with a garlic oyster sauce, and Night Market rice really kicks up the spice with Thai chiles tossed with sliced beef. On the tofu and vegetable menu, one of the most intriguing dishes is the flame-tossed winter melon in black bean sauce, definitely a little unusual. –Nina King

With cobbled walkways, cute shops, street-side cafés and gondoliers singing along the canal, you’ll feel like you’re strolling along an actual Italian marketplace. Soaring Spree For adrenaline junkies, skydiving might be the pinnacle of thrilling experiences. That’s because it requires a little more guts than normal. The huge cocktail menu has some stellar selections including skinny cocktails, frozen cocktails, lemonades, chilled shots, canned and draught beers, champagne, bottle service, and a variety of tasty mojitos like the popular Cucumber Mojito. Maggie O’Brien
Bartender fulfills her goal many times over After five years of bartending in her hometown of San Antonio, Texas, it was time for Maggie O’Brien and her husband to get out of Dodge. “There had to be a ‘wow’ factor for me to move,” O’Brien says. “My husband thought, ‘Hey, what about Vegas?’ Glitz, glamour, a party, and you’re the one serving drinks and you’re in this atmosphere that’s iconic, and I thought that would be amazing for me to pursue. That was my goal.” In 2009, the couple made the move, and O’Brien has been fulfilling her goal ever since. She’s bartended on the Strip at restaurants, pools and nightclubs, and for the past five years, she’s been with Influence, The Pool at The Linq, where she’s the lead bartender. To be a good bartender, O’Brien says, “You have to be a chameleon. You have to be able to read your guest from the first 30 seconds you meet them and say hello; you have to read them
and become that bartender for each individual. It’s like you’re playing different roles throughout your entire shift.” It also helps to work with good management, she says, and she praises the management team at Influence. O’Brien says, “They’re the type of managers that listen to your voice and your input.” And after five years, O’Brien loves her job at the pool—it was one of her goals she went after and achieved. “We are a hidden gem. Our prices are reasonable … It’s a nice getaway, but you’re still having that Vegas vacation.” And, we had to ask: What about your name? “I get asked about my name all the time, especially by people from Ireland, they always say ‘I’ve met some Maggie O’Briens in my day and you look nothing like that,” she says, laughing. “Maggie is a nickname for Maria Magdalena and O’Brien is hubby’s (last) name.” –Kiko Miyasato

A trip to the spa might just be what the body needs In these current days and times, who doesn’t feel like they need a break from the worry and stress—if only for just a little while? While Las Vegas provides the perfect adult playground to blow off some steam and have some fun, the city also offers some of the most luxurious spa options. One of the most gorgeous and grand settings is The Spa at Aria. From the sounds of flowing waters and the fresh and calming scents to the sun that streams through the glass windows, there’s an immediate relaxation that consumes guests upon arrival at The Spa. The interior design of the spa and its 62 treatment rooms is reminiscent of natural, outdoor surroundings with upscale, opulent touches throughout each space. Keeping guest safety
and health in mind, certain common areas and specialty portions of the spa are closed for now, including the co-ed balcony with infinity-edge pool, the shio salt room and the ganbanyaku stone beds. However, this doesn’t preclude guests from booking one of the spa’s many treatments that will help to restore and rejuvenate the body. Choose from a list of massage therapies that includes 50-, 80- and 100-minute experiences. For athletes, massage stretching and sport massage techniques are used on the body to improve flexibility and work on the muscles to help relieve tension and bring back an overall balance to the body. Signature massages can include aromatherapy, and there’s even an expecting mother’s
massage designed for women in their second and third trimesters. Facials are also available, including signature and classic options as well as guest favorite Vitality of the Glaciers. This 50- or 80-minute facial stimulates the skin’s energy and cellular renewal, helping to erase fine lines and wrinkles, leaving skin glowing and supple. The salon portion of the spa is also open, and guests can book everything from a cut and color to blowouts and updo styles. For men, the barbershop provides haircuts, head shaves and hot lather shaves. Full nail care is also offered, including gel and acrylic manicures, mani-pedis and paraffin treatments. As Las Vegas enters a new normal, it’s refreshing to see that one of its newest restaurants is a full-fledged nod to its past. Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse at the Flamingo refers to Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel and Meyer Lansky, the (in)famous gangsters who opened the legendary Flamingo back in 1946, a watershed moment in Las Vegas’ history. The town would never be the same after Siegel and Lansky brought glamour to the desert, and after a meal here you’ll have a better understanding of and appreciation for that place and time. Just entering this restaurant is an experience. You start by going in the “back way,” as Siegel, Meyer and other high-profile figures used to do back in the day. In this

case, the back way is a “bakery,” which then leads to a small hallway with large plateglass windows, through which you can see chefs preparing dishes and desserts, as well as a representation of the dry-aged meats the restaurant offers. There are numerous photos of Siegel and Meyer, all provided by their families. The main dining room itself is spacious and offers plenty of room for social distancing. There’s a raw bar, where the seafood towers are prepared, and various other dining spaces for small and larger groups. Steve Sisolak, as well as other governors, recently decided to reopen schools after closures triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Las Vegas Magazine asked numerous Las Vegas entertainers to reflect on their high school years. And hopefully all our students get back to making memories soon.

That’s the homeroom bell clanging in your ears. And as your teacher surely asked: Whatever you’re whispering about back there, perhaps you’d like to share it with the class? Though you wouldn’t suspect it, Linq prestidigitator Mat Franco and pals would violate school policy by skipping out occasionally—once even waving to the principal on his way out. Later, while his parents were at work, the phone rang at his house, the irked school honcho on the line. “I answered the phone in my normal voice, and he said, ‘Hi, is this Mr. Franco?’ and technically I wasn’t lying, so I said, ‘Yes,’” he remembers, as the principal reported Mat’s infraction. “I said, ‘Thank you so much for the information’ and that was the end of it.” “I never got involved in drugs or alcohol,” says The Mirage ventriloquist Terry Fator. “And there was no chance of getting a girl pregnant, because none would go out with me.”

“I sang a song at assembly, ‘Blackberry Boogie,’ that I probably shouldn’t have,” says Caesars Palace performer—and “Mr. Las Vegas”—Wayne Newton. “It was probably too mature for that audience. The teachers took great umbrage.” Surely the students said danke schoen, Wayne. Did we mention the dating ingenuity of the Rio’s master illusionist Penn Jillette? “The idea I got was you should try to have sex with smart girls. It is the only advice I will give my son.” Kindly elaborate, you devilish Casanova. “The smart girls with the glasses and mousy demeanor that were in the advance reading and writing classes were carrying around Henry Miller books. (Tropic of Cancer— hubba, hubba.) If I asked the cheerleaders out on a date I would get nowhere. You could just go to the smart girls and say, ‘Wanna (let’s call it intimately study biology)? “I was pretty hippie-dippy,” says Harrah’s magician Mac King. “I was the quiet, insecure shy girl,” says Lorena Peril, who blossomed into the sassy-brassy host of Luxor’s Fantasy. Drag-queen king Frank Marino of the Tropicana’s Legends in Concert? Flamboyant now. Flamboyant then. “I thought I was cool. I’m not sure if everybody else did,” he says. “I was a crazy dresser—very disco and over the top.”
High-achiever? That was the Westgate’s Sexxy star Jennifer Romas. “I was heavily into sports—one of the female jocks. I still hold records for diving,” she says. “And I was an honor roll student. And I was in the homecoming court.” And yes—she dated the football and basketball players. Do you recall that kid spinning on the hallway floor during that ’90s craze? Meet J.D. Rainey of Sahara Las Vegas’ Magic Mike Live. “I started breakdancing in ninth grade, during lunch, in between classes, wherever and whenever I could,” Rainey says. Then there’s the kid whose future was preordained. “Most people would call me the Magic Kid, which I didn’t mind,” says Franco. “I’d be the kid being yelled at for playing with my deck of cards instead of looking at the blackboard. But I

would use magic to impress the teachers so they would like me so I’d get better grades.” Whatever happened to the cool kids? Some simply grew up into cool grown-ups. “I was exactly how I am today,” says Nathan Morris of The Mirage’s Boyz II Men. “I’ve been pretty straightforward and laid-back all my life. What you see now is what high-school Nathan was like.”
High-school dating—do the memories make you sigh with satisfaction, shrug with indifference or cringe with humiliation? Or all three? “I was really thin and tiny and they called me Olive Oyl,” Peril says. “Sometimes I’d wear a couple of layers of clothing just to look bigger. I didn’t have my first date until after I graduated. I went to prom with my best friend’s brother. He was very sweet to take me.” Occupying the opposite end of the dating spectrum? “I always dated boys older than me; I never dated anyone in my class,” says Romas with a self-effacing giggle—embodying the unattainable high school hottie, at whom many of us could only gaze in hormonal frustration. As Fator can attest, teen dating is tough when image is everything. “We were janitors and that doesn’t help when you’re in high school,” he says of the janitorial service owned by his parents, who put Fator and his siblings to work, including at his school, to pay tuition. “I remember kids throwing things on the floor just to watch us get it.” Others took

advantage of their talents, such as Franco, who enlisted girls as his magic assistants. Would you believe one of the future Boyz wasn’t a ladies’ man? “I wanted to be but I was not given that type of attention unfortunately. I wasn’t on their radar,” Morris says. “But Boyz II Men came about during early senior year and that definitely turned that whole thing around.” Perhaps the oddest dating legacy belongs to King, whose teen and adult recollections commingle, given that his school was built out
of an old hotel—and after his school days, was partially reconverted back into a resort. “My wife and I spent the first night of our honeymoon at that hotel,” King says. Interesting memory combo, no?
Were you the bully or the bullied? “I got beat up all the time,” Jillette recalls. “Strangely enough, I would be with my girlfriend and get beat up by four guys together calling me

(that F-word slur). And I would try to explain to them that there was some breakdown to their logic of—wait a minute, you’re the ones who are with groups of guys and I’m the one with a girl. But that seemed to elude them.”
Teen-time memories we carry can vary … widely. High school was a happy experience for King. “Me and a buddy started the school newspaper, we made short little films and made up this weird little theater and invited people to see them,” King says. “And I would stand up in the lunchroom and do magic tricks like it was a street show.” Describing himself as a “nomad,” Rainey moved easily between those cliques kids tend to split into, which he looks back on with gratitude. “That was the best thing, especially now being out in the world,” Rainey says. “You

have to deal with many different cultures and ethnicities and preferences, so you have tolerance and empathy. I would hang out with whomever I pleased because they were good people with good energy.” Yet Fator—whose family moved frequently—never got to know new friends for long, but clung to school as a safe harbor from the ultra-religious father who beat him. “I was a theater geek and that was my saving grace, that’s where I could get away,” says Fator, who performed in plays including The Sound of Music and Fiddler on the Roof. “My father beat us in the name of God and I think God
made him allow me to do theater. Maybe he thought it would help me become a preacher. But my goal was to be an entertainer.” Previewing his future out-there persona, Marino recalls portraying Philostrate, the palace party planner in a school production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. “I got into trouble for my body language when I entered,” he says. “The director starts screaming at me, ‘Frank, you’re the servant—you don’t own the damn palace!’” Dividing his time between classes, training in junior ROTC and performing in a weekly local TV show in Phoenix, busy Newton found

that his budding celebrity tended to annoy his teachers, though that wasn’t necessarily a negative. “My music teacher in the eighth grade said to the class, ‘Boys and girls, we have a young man in our class I’m sure you’ve seen on local television and I want you to know we’re not showing him any favoritism at all,’” Newton recalls. “That took a lot of forethought. She approached it from the standpoint that I wouldn’t be a sitting duck for the other kids.” As it turned out, the popular Newton was a star not only on television, but on school grounds—scoring a hat trick of being

elected sophomore, junior and student body president, as well as excelling academically. “Part of the reason is because I was able to memorize quickly and react on it,” he says. Yet if rules and regs were anathema to your rebel ’tude, then Jillette was your spiritual brother. One of the deepest thinkers and sharpest intellects in show business, Jillette nonetheless didn’t apply himself in class. Still, he aced the SAT tests, putting him at odds with the principal. “I told him if I didn’t graduate—which would make my parents very, very, very unhappy— that I would go in front of the school board
and tell them that they didn’t do well by their student who had done the best on the SATs,” Jillette says. “And he said, ‘Are you threatening me?’ and I said, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘What I’d like to do is to graduate at the bottom of my class.’ So I did not go to the school pretty much my entire senior year and graduated at the bottom of my class.” Not rebellious enough? Then consider that the then-shaggy-haired, eager-to-argue student—a lifelong teetotaler and drug-abstainer—was nonetheless suspected of being a druggie. When school officials tried to search his locker, he attached an industrial-strength lock on it and contacted the American Civil Liberties Union. When they finally got into the locker? “They found I’d never even opened it,” he says. “It was empty, brand new from the beginning.” Teachers tried to persuade him that he’d one day reflect back on high school as “the best time of your life.” Jillette, naturally, had a response. “For a while afterwards,” he says, “I was sending postcards to three or four of the teachers, saying, ‘Just to keep you posted, things are better than they were in high school.’” He didn’t worry about the pencils. He didn’t sweat the books. But man, oh, man—he earned those teachers’ dirty looks.

You may notice some guests (including yourself) headed straight to the elevators. That’s because contactless check-in is no longer a thing of the future. At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
You’ll be required to wear a mask, and every hotel that reopens is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that all employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, on loading docks and in other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
There may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups and to try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars, and clean escalator rails.
Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down; and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find little bottles of amenities but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested, and at some hotels, won’t be entering during your stay.
Many venues have plexiglass at payment stations, and marks to encourage social distancing while waiting. In addition, fewer patrons may be allowed in at one time.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.
Wear your mask on the way. There is a limit to the number of people allowed in the area and there is space between each party to encourage social distancing. Each area is sanitized between each party.
Most restaurants require reservations, although not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have 6 feet between them and the number of customers is fewer. Menus may be digital or one-time use paper menus. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers.

Although the number of attractions in Vegas isn’t as high as a few months ago, sanitation is still high on those that are open, and social distancing is easily seen. For instance, on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.
One of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room, and hotels have been using this option for many years now. Look at your bill, OK it if all is correct, and get a copy emailed to you. If you have a physical key, most hotels will allow you to leave it in the room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.
While you’re here in Las Vegas, there are several things you can do to help keep yourself well and decrease the chances of you or someone else getting sick. Give yourself a self-check before you arrive. Do you have a fever? A cough? Is your sense of smell normal? You must now wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. It helps stem the spread of potentially deadly viruses like
COVID-19. It’s also considerate of fellow guests and resort workers.

Latin Accents Chef Lorena Garcia’s first Las Vegas restaurant, Chica (The Venetian, 702.805.8472), is loved both for its brunch menu and for dinner. Just recently, Garcia introduced a revamped dinner menu. To start your meal, try one of the new cocktails, such as the Chica-rita, made with Espolón tequila, lime, grilled pineapple, sage and Elemakule Tiki bitters. Then, you may want to order shareable items such as guacamole or the new wild mushroom tostada. Some of the newer items include carne asada tacos, with adobo-marinated steak, salsa verde and cilantro. Potato and cheese empanadas, with avocado crema and a corn poblano pico join another classic, grilled beef empanadas. Sweet plantains, a staple ingredient in many Latin cultures, join the meat and black beans in the stuffed pocket. Another addition, the grilled quesadilla, lets you choose your filling—mushroom, chicken or steak, and smothers that with Oaxaca cheese.
