From the Editor Very good signs
I recently had the pleasure of dining at a brand-new restaurant at the Flamingo: Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse. Trust me when I say that a new business on the Las Vegas Strip at this point in time is cause for serious celebration. After all, just a few months ago we saw the entire Strip shut down in the wake of COVID-19. As exciting as starting back up has been, the fact that our city is pushing ahead with new business is a very good sign. My dining experience came at the same time as the beginning of Nevada’s mask mandate, and the difference from the last time I had visited the Strip was striking: Upon entering the property, I was greeted by a picture of Wayne Newton and a mask dispenser, indicating that Mr. Las Vegas wants everyone to wear a mask. I just have one word for the Caesars Entertainment marketing department: Genius! I don’t care what your stance on mask-wearing is: When Wayne Newton asks you to do something, who’s not going to sit up and pay attention? My walk to the steakhouse was another very good sign: Everyone—and I mean everyone—I passed was wearing a mask. Yes, there were a few people who had pulled them down below their noses (#coveryournose!), but everyone else seemed to be enjoying their visit with safety in mind.
Bugsy & Meyer’s is a truly memorable experience, one I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone looking for good food in an inspiring setting. Taking over the space previously occupied by Center Cut Steakhouse, Bugsy & Meyer’s starts you off in a very clever way: You enter through the back, just like the gangsters of yore used to do. In this case, the “back” is a bakery done in 1920-1930s style. As you continue, you pass windows through which you can see chefs preparing desserts, as well as samples of some of the dry-aged cuts available. There’s also a raw bar where seafood towers are prepared, and the “Count Room,” where you can enjoy a classic cocktail like an Old-Fashioned. The very good signs continued with the waitstaff. I asked my server how he felt about wearing a mask. He was candid: It was uncomfortable; at times it was difficult to breathe; and sometimes he had a hard time communicating clearly. But he also acknowledged that those aspects were a small price to pay for everyone’s safety. And despite the mask, he could not have been more accommodating. At a time when it’s easy to get lost in the big picture, it’s important to remember what a difference we can all make individually. Las Vegas, its employees, and you, our invaluable visitors, are doing just that.

You may notice some guests (including yourself) headed straight to the elevators. That’s because contactless check-in is no longer a thing of the future. At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel that reopens is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that many employees are masked, and if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
There may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups and to try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars, and clean escalator rails.
Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down; and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find little bottles of amenities but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested, and at some hotels, won’t be entering during your stay.
Many venues have plexiglass at payment stations, and marks to encourage social distancing while waiting. In addition, fewer patrons may be allowed in at one time.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.
There is a limit to the number of people allowed in the area and there is space between each party to encourage social distancing. Each area is sanitized between each party.
Most restaurants require reservations, although not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have 6 feet between them and the number of customers is fewer. Menus may be digital or one-time use paper menus. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers. Bars will also be spacing patrons’ parties 6 feet apart.

Although the number of attractions in Vegas isn’t as high as a few months ago, sanitation is still high on those that are open, and social distancing is easily seen. For instance, on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.
One of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room, and hotels have been using this option for many years now. Look at your bill, OK it if all is correct, and get a copy emailed to you. If you have a physical key, most hotels will allow you to leave it in the room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.
While you’re here in Las Vegas, there are several things you can do to help keep yourself well and decrease the chances of you or someone else getting sick. Give yourself a self-check before you arrive. Do you have a fever? A cough? Is your sense of smell normal? You must now wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. It helps stem the spread of potentially deadly viruses like

A Night in Milan Ambra Italian Kitchen + Bar combines modern sensibilities with classic, light dishes in a stunning atmosphere, said to resemble Milan at dusk. Celebrity chef stresses quality and an all-around good time There are fewer more likable celebrity chefs than Michael Mina. In all of his restaurants here in Vegas and around the world, Mina is a perfectionist, but he also stresses the importance of fun in every aspect of a meal. And at his first steakhouse, StripSteak, Mina has nailed it. Expect only the highest-quality here, from your meal to your servers. Mina just wants to make you smile, and once you try one of his signature appetizers—from the “instant bacon,” featuring five-spice pork belly, tempura oyster and green cabbage slaw, to the foie gras doughnut with a poached Bartlett pear, almond crumble and Noble maple syrup—we dare you not to.

And what’s a fun meal without a fun cocktail? Start with a Gold Rush (Old Forester bourbon, honey syrup and lemon) or a season sangria (Grüner Veltliner, Pavan, Cointreau and peach). Mina has packed this menu with goodness, from ribeyes and New York strips to filet mignons and Australian tomahawks. Oh, and there’s also a wagyu section, including Japanese A5, many meat lovers’ holy grail. Can’t decide? Try the World Wide Wagyu, featuring Japanese A5 New York, American rib cap and Australian short rib.
There’s also a lovely seafood selection, including Scottish salmon, Mediterranean sea bass and diver scallops. Elsewhere, enjoy free-range brick chicken, served with Benton’s ham, mushroom agnolotti and chanterelle mushrooms, and the Kurobuta pork chop, accompanied by Brussels sprouts, rice pilaf and whole grain mustard. Game Time If you’re a gamer, then HyperX Esports Arena will make you feel like you’ve reached paradise. The 30,000-square-foot arena offers gaming stations, weekly tournaments (such as a Mario Kart tournament called Saturday Night Speedway) and a competition stage with a 50-foot LED video wall. But if you’re not such a serious gamer, there are still ways to have fun. Since gaming is now a spectator sport, you can walk in and watch a tournament. Restaurant specializes in spicing up your favorites If you like your Mexican food spicy, make sure your next dining trip is to Diablo’s Cantina; no matter what you order here, you’ll be given the option of ordering a salsa tasting, which features mild green salsa (roasted tomatillo jalapeño), medium red salsa (roasted tomato chipotle) and hot reaper salsa (roasted tomato Carolina Reaper, a serious bad boy in the pepper world). If you’re brave and don’t fear the reaper, prepare for a taste explosion at Diablo’s. Of course, those flavors will go down a lot better with some cocktail companionship, and Diablo’s features some great tequilas and

Appetizers like nachos and quesadillas are the perfect gateway for main courses like the enchilada combination (beef barbacoa, chicken and garlic shrimp) and Alambre tacos, made with filet mignon, chorizo, poblano peppers, cilantro, onion and what Diablo’s calls its “OMG cheese blend.” You can also opt for fowl with Diablo’s chicken,

Who doesn’t love Americana? That retro, roadside diner feel has a universal appeal, and for good reason: It takes us all back to a simpler time. In today’s world, recapturing that feeling is worth its weight in gold. And you’ll find that feeling at Searsucker, where the specialty is American classic comfort foods in a setting full of Americana—coarse rope chandeliers, neon “Eat” signs, tumbleweed-shaped light fixtures and rustic wood-andmarble tables. Start your experience here with a cocktail list that features some fun twists—the spicy pickled Mary features “michelada love” (get it?), lemon and firewater bitters; the margarita features hibiscus, lime and agave, and the martini utilizes dark chocolate and espresso. The PB&J Old Fashioned uses Redemption bourbon, fassionola syrup and strawberry/orange bitters. There’s a lot of comfort to be found on the menu, but start with buffalo-style chicken lollipops served with blue cheese fondue and ranch dressing. Farms that supply the main courses include Desert Bloom, Cape Grim and Verlasso. We’ll Always Have Bangkok Drawing inspiration from the famous line about Paris in the 1942 movie Casablanca, this cocktail, created by Allen, was recently added to the menu. The Asian-inspired recipe for We’ll Always Have Bangkok includes Grey Goose vodka, basil-infused honey, yellow chartreuse, Thai-spice bitters and lemon juice. “It’ll start out citrusy and slightly sweet with an herbaceous fi nish with a little bit of heat at the end from the Thai spice,” Allen says. –KM

Bartender finds creativity behind the bar For Natalie Allen, life happened when she was busy making other plans—in a good way. For 14 years the Salt Lake City native was a professional hair and makeup artist, and when she moved to Las Vegas to further her career she worked her other skill, bartending part time. After a handful of years doing both, it’s when she joined The Smashed Pig in 2018 that Allen discovered her passions had switched. “I laugh about it now because hair and makeup was my full time and bartending was the side hustle and it quickly turned into my full-time hustle,” says Allen, who is now the gastropub’s lead bartender. “The Smashed Pig is the place that flipped my two passions. It was due to the environment. It was something fresh, something different for me. Which was exciting. … It’s nice to have something where I am excited to go to work, where I can be creative.”
While Allen talks fondly about the type of environment she gets to work in at The Smashed Pig, it’s also a place where she can put her skills and passions for spirits to the test. She even has a few of her own cocktails on the menu. “I’m the bourbon girl,” she says. “It’s one of my favorite spirits. It reminds me of home— my dad and I would drink bourbon and smoke cigars together. When I started bartending, my Old-Fashioned game grew very quickly. I pride myself on my Old-Fashioneds.” For Allen, another bonus about The Smashed Pig is its location—the flourishing downtown area, a neighborhood that Allen loves and makes her home, too. When she’s not behind the bar you’ll find her riding her vintage Schwinn bicycle and checking out all the art downtown. “I’m very inspired by the art in this city, how big of an arts city Las Vegas has become.” –Kiko Miyasato

For something a bit more off the beaten path, try the cheese blintz, a thin pancake with a somewhat sweet cheese filling (order a side of fruit and pour on top. Heaven!) A great lunch starter is the tuna tartare, served with house-made bagel chips and lettuce for scooping. A French onion soup has a thick layer of gooey cheese that will keep you coming back for more. Freddy—shrimp, heart of palm, avocado, radish and crispy shallots— to the Beverly—turkey, cheddar, bacon, beets and juicy tomato. Seafood lovers will be especially excited. Jonah’s Loaded Fish Tacos are exactly that, with cabbage and chiles complementing the lightly breaded and deepfried fish. Grilled branzino is served with sesame spinach, roasted salmon gets an accompaniment of asparagus and mustard vinaigrette, and the 2-pound lobster will have your tastebuds a-tingling with dijon, horseradish and drawn butter. But if you’re looking for a marquee dish at Sadelle’s, it’s hard to beat the fried chicken, both flavor-wise and aesthetically. After being brined in Tabasco sauce, buttermilk and lemon zest for 12 hours, it’s coated and fried and served with coleslaw, honey and Crystal hot sauce. Get the cameras out! Desserts are simple but oh so good. Chocolate pudding is served with sprinkles, nuts and whipped cream to make this an interactive ending to the meal. The strawberry cake, 18 layers of strawberry and cakey goodness, make dessert a tea party.

Fighting the temptation to splurge may prove difficult, but if you’re on a budget, you could easily spend a fantastic day in Las Vegas for under $100*.

The best part of waking up may not be Folgers in your cup, but it’s likely that coffee gets your motor running in the morning. We’ll take the low end, where you could theoretically have a coffee and sandwich for $13.
If that coffee doesn’t have you feeling jazzed, take a short walk to New YorkNew York, where The Big Apple Coaster (702.740.6616) will get your adrenaline pumping. For $19, get your fill of twists, turns and loops. After your ride, dine at Sirrico’s Pizza (702.740.6969) at Village Street Eateries inside the hotel, where you can grab a massive slice of cheese pizza for $5.
As promised, several experiences in Las Vegas are free. Head center Strip to Bellagio. There you can experience the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, a quiet garden designed by talented horticulturalists, and the Fountains of Bellagio, the iconic water show choreographed to popular songs. But who says you can’t feel like a high roller? Down at The Linq Promenade, the High Roller Observation Wheel (702.322.0593) is undeniably high at 550 feet, and it does indeed roll, spinning in one full revolution every half hour. A $21 daytime ticket offers some of the greatest views of the city. When the ride is over, grab a quick dinner at Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips (702.322.0529). While the celebrity chef is known for his high-end restaurants, his grab-and-go option offers a delectable fish and chips platter for only $16.

In the evening, the bright lights of the Strip offer the best free show in the city. Make it better at the Eiffel Tower Viewing Deck at Paris (888.727.4758). A journey to the top is $22. As an added bonus, the tower performs a free light show every half hour from sunset until midnight. At this point, you’ve exhausted your budget, but there’s one last thing you can do. Long known as a great place to people watch and explore Old Vegas, Fremont Street Experience is also home to the free Viva Vision light show, which plays on the canopy above. With nearly 50 million LED lamps and a 600,000-watt sound system, the show might be a bit overwhelming, but you’ll feel comforted knowing your pocketbook survived Vegas relatively unscathed. *Transportation, tip and tax are not included.
