James: Terry (Ellis) from En Vogue just texted me the other day and she can’t wait to get here. Denton: Naughty By Nature. That’s gonna be insane when they come.

Group is thrilled to be playing Vegas The nostalgic, party-inducing I Love the ’90s Tour has been one of the most successful cross-country productions of the last three years. When it came time to produce a Vegas version of the show, one of the tour’s biggest acts couldn’t wait to bring the music and fun to the Strip. And Salt-N-Pepa—Cheryl James (Salt), Sandra Denton (Pepa) and Deidra Roper (DJ Spinderella)—are already in love with Las Vegas. What was it like when you first stepped onstage to kick off this unique concert residency show? James: It was wild because that (first night) I went from this stage to the stage at Drai’s (Nightclub at the Cromwell), which was insane. I love that club. It’s the coolest club

I’ve ever seen in my life. I stayed out and it’s like a unicorn sighting if I stay out. Roper: We were pretty anxious leading up to the first shows. Stress levels were high. But once we got onstage it got … worse. (Laughs.) Just kidding. That’s when the hands went up and then

How do you decide which Salt-N-Pepa hits and personal favorites work their way into the show? James: You’re always gonna get people who are disappointed if you didn’t do their song. “None of Your Business” is one of Pep’s faves and if we don’t do that, people get upset. But what a great problem to have, so many hits that people get mad if we don’t do them all. Roper: “I’ll Take Your Man.” We play that. That’s one of my favorites. James: Yeah, we call that one our ratchet classic. as we progressed we felt so much more comfortable. Denton: I just love Vegas and I feel like I’m very Vegas. I’ve lived in New York and L.A. but I feel like this is it, this is the spot for me. And how better to celebrate than with our own residency? You and the other producers have really added to the production for this version. James: We had to make sure it was fabulous because our name is on the thing. I watched the show from the side and this is a show I definitely would want to see, and I am Miss Broadway. I’m that chick. I’m checking out the production all the time and I think it’s fabulous,

Have you had a chance yet to explore Las Vegas a bit, to go beyond the Strip? Roper: I haven’t. There’s always something coming up and everything is a priority. I’m waiting for that day when I can chill and just go to the supermarket. Denton: Getting off the Strip is so amazing because I’m a mountain person. I need that view and Vegas gives me that. James: I’m looking forward to it because we’ve been doing so much. I feel like we’re busier now than we have been in our whole career, which is insane and incredible. But this Vegas show is our main priority.

Holiday Huzzahs There’s no doubt the Las Vegas Strip is one of the most festive places you can be during the holiday season, but there is only a handful of popular production shows that go that extra mile and introduce a little extra magic this time of year. Tournament of Kings is one that stands out. The stalwart family-friendly show at Excalibur transformed into

Twas the Knight, a holiday dinner show, just before Thanksgiving and continues to make merry through Dec. 27. The 900-seat equestrian arena becomes a winter wonderland and the traditional Cornish game hen feast gets some festive spice as well. But no snowfall can stop the battle for honor; the jousting and sword fighting must go on.

All The Vegas Eric Jordan Young “It’s so cool. It’s so much fun to do and being in that iconic space, Cleopatra’s Barge at Caesars Palace is unbelievable. It’s just a really good time and I’m having fun. It’s one of those opportunities when somebody hands you a piece of paper and says, ‘OK, just go with it,’ and producers Keith Thompson and Philip Fortenberry just rocked it and were nice enough to trust me with the material. I’m just running with it. Global superstars stormed the Strip for the 19th annual Latin Grammy Awards, broadcast live around the world from the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Nov. 15. Performances by Marc Anthony, Will Smith, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Steve Aoki, Maná, Halsey and many more set the stage on fire, with Uruguayan artist Jorge Drexler taking home the song and record of the year awards for his smash “Telefonía.” The official afterparty was held at Hakkasan at MGM Grand, but an equally big bash was held earlier at the Palms, where Rolling Stone hosted nominees and celebs for a soiree launching its new Rolling Stone Latin. Blink-182 wrapped up its residency at The Pearl at Palms the same weekend drummer Travis Barker celebrated his 43rd birthday at Hyde Bellagio with bandmate Matt Skiba and others. Barker was also spotted the next night jumping onstage with The Chainsmokers at XS Nightclub at Encore. Kelly Clarkson was in town recently to celebrate a friend’s birthday and stopped for dinner at Beauty & Essex at Cosmopolitan. Absinthe announced a New Year’s Eve alternative, a party package including tickets to the show at 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 31 plus access to an exclusive party in the Caesars Palace courtyard until 1 a.m. featuring an open bar, DJ and great views of Strip fireworks. She didn’t get a countdown and fireworks, but The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco did get to hang backstage with the Gazillionaire after catching Absinthe recently.

A Night of Empowerment

Stage production of hit movie series delivers the goods Ladies, tonight it’s all about you. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, getting hitched, getting over a divorce or just plain and simple need a serious girls’ night out, look no further than Magic Mike Live. Inspired by the hit films starring Channing Tatum, this is not your average male revue. Lyndsay Hailey, the show’s emcee, describes the Las Vegas production as, “sexy, empowering and motivational.” Hailey, an alumna of Second City National Touring Company in Chicago with more than 10 years of comedy experience under her belt, co-wrote Magic Mike Live with Tatum. “It’s been amazing (working with him). He lets everybody freely express themselves and play at the top of their intelligence,” she says. “What sets it

apart from other shows is the female voice, and that was super important to Channing. It’s really about what women find sexy. The main thing he told me: ‘I want you to put you into the show.’” And indeed she did. Inside the fictional Club Domina, Hailey calls upon her imaginary friend Unicorn (not the kind you had as a little girl but an adult one, with voiceover help from Tatum). Whatever Hailey wants, Hailey gets. Tired of seeing men dressed as firefighters and police officers? No problem. Opt for a man in jeans with a bare chest, and … poof! Just like that, not one but 13 dancers (off all different flavors) magically appear, ready to live out every woman’s fantasies. “Every night when I’m standing onstage and they turn to me

and surf the crowd, I lose my breath every time,” she chuckles. “I think it’s because I’m so excited about what’s about to happen. I love that part. It feels so powerful to be a part of that.” Magic Mike Live is full of many surprises. “Everything from the dance numbers to the writing and the selection of songs—there are so many females involved in this process,” Hailey says. “It’s mostly about what we actually want.” One lucky lady gets her feet rubbed by a dancer named (what else?) Mike; another gets seduced on top of the bar to 50 Cent’s “Candy Shop”; still another straps in tight for a sky-high flight. Serving the Fans It’s not National Finals Rodeo time in Las Vegas without Rodney Carrington. Year after year, cowboys and cowgirls alike spend at least one night of their Vegas stay cracking up to the Texas-born funnyman’s laid-back comedy and to his country songs, most of which are funny but a few which are straight down the line. Carrington, 50, is so popular during NFR that he is scheduled

for a 10-night stand on this run, an almost unheard-of number of consecutive shows for visiting comedians to Vegas. Starched jeans, cowboy boots, colorful solid button-down shirt, 10-gallon hat—the man knows how to maximize his salt-ofthe-earth image. He also knows how to tour, which he seems to do nonstop. Carrington is still riding the wave of support for his 2017

album Here Comes The Trut , which peaked at No. 3 on the US Comedy charts. Carrington has proven his worth not just onstage, but onscreen as well. He starred as the titular character on Rodney, a sitcom about a guy who wants to quit his job and become a stand-up comedian. Sound familiar? We’ve Got Forever The ’90s are everywhere in Las Vegas right now, and while R&B quartet All-4-One makes its home in the I Love the ’90s show on the Strip, the group’s country-music counterpart, John Michael Montgomery, is hitting downtown as part of National Finals Rodeo entertainment. In the mid-’90s, when All-4-One made the R&B and pop charts with singles “I Swear” and “I Can Love You Like That,” Montgomery topped the country charts with his versions of those same songs. He also had plenty of other country hits in the ’90s, including “I Love the Way You Love Me,” “Be My Baby Tonight,” “If You’ve Got Love” and “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident),” all of which hit No. 1 on Billboard’s country charts. Although he hasn’t released an album since 2008’s Time Flies (featuring hit single “Forever”), Montgomery remains a popular draw on the touring circuit, bringing his baritone voice and straightforward country songwriting to audiences who still remember (and still love) the ’90s. –Josh Bell

Twang It Up When Reba McEntire and country duo Brooks & Dunn first announced their Las Vegas residency in December 2014, it was planned as a short-term thing. Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn had dissolved their musical partnership in 2010 and were just taking steps toward reuniting. Cut to a few years later, and Together in Vegas is a staple of Strip entertainment. The trio returns for its latest round this month, making it the longest-running coun-

try show on the Strip. Along with their hit collaborations “If You See Him/If You See Her” and “Cowgirls Don’t Cry,” the show includes some of the most popular songs from McEntire (“Whoever’s in New England,” “Fancy”) and Brooks & Dunn (“Brand New Man,” “Boot Scootin’ Boogie”). The three star performers share the stage throughout the show, creating an ebb and flow that’s emblematic of a true collaborative effort. –JB

Crazy Girls is the longest-running topless revue in Las Vegas and has become a local institution. The six stars are all beautiful and accomplished, performing acrobatic dance routines with flashy costumes and some simple props that allow the dancers to show off their impressive assets. Santa’s Sangria If you’re doing any holiday shopping at Miracle Mile Shops in Planet Holllywood Resort & Casino, make sure to stop for a holiday cocktail courtesy of Cabo Wabo Cantina. Sammy Hagar’s dining and live music venue recently rolled out some seasonal libations, including Santa’s Sangria, made with sauvignon blanc, D’usse cognac, white cranberry juice and blackberry puree, all topped with club soda and garnished with fresh cranberries and rosemary. Then sit back, relax and people watch before resuming.

From the Soul Not many pop performers can bare their souls and still make hits, but Atlanta R&B singer 6lack (pronounced “Black,” with the numeral six nodding to his roots in Atlanta’s Zone 6 neighborhood) has done just that. Over the course of two albums (including September’s East Atlanta Love Letter), he’s forged a strong emotional connection with his listeners, singing about his real-life struggles and insecurities. It’s a stark contrast to impersonal music about partying and finding (or losing) love. “I wanted to talk about the stuff that people obviously go through and experience but nobody

is actually hitting right now,” 6lack told Complex in 2017, after the release of his debut album, Free 6lack, which featured the hit single “Prblms.” That song helped 6lack land on a spot opening on tour for fellow emotionally expressive R&B singer The Weeknd, and on East Atlanta, his collaborators include Future, J. Cole, Khalid and Offset. Stereogum called 6lack “a gifted singer, capable of smooth ruminations on heartbreak” on East Atlanta, and those smooth ruminations have set him apart from his peers, while carving a unique place for him on the pop charts. –Josh Bell

The list of female country singers who burst on the scene before they were old enough to drive is as long as a breakup ballad. So the fact Tanya Tucker hit it big at age 13—when her debut single “Delta Dawn” reached No. 6 on the charts—isn’t all that remarkable. Here’s what is remarkable: She followed with a career that has lasted 45 years, making her part of an exclusive club including Brenda Lee, Dolly Parton and Barbara Mandrell.

In Tucker’s case, success has looked like this: 24 studio albums, nine of which were top 10 on the U.S. country charts, including one that reached No. 1; 67 singles on the U.S. country charts, including 10 that hit No. 1; and 10 Grammy nominations. Tucker enjoyed crossover appeal, not unlike two modern-day female artists: Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, both of whom are quite a way from matching her longevity. –Matt Jacob

Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill (Caesars Palace, 702.731.7410) is a parade of great beers and classic bar snacks, sandwiches and straight-off-the-grill standards, while Gordon Ramsay Burger (Planet Hollywood Resort, 702.785.5462) focuses on that most American of meals but executes each fabulous burger, every order of truffle Parmesan fries and each milkshake with refined flair and creativity. Ramsay recreates his childhood summers with Gordon Ramsay Fish & Chips (Linq Promenade, 702.322.0529). This small, colorful spot

serves perfectly crisp and pillowy chips, best enjoyed with a liberal dip in curry-mango sauce or southwestern ranch. Save the house-made tartar sauce for hand-cut, fresh cod fillets battered and cooked to order, often called the best fish and chips in all of Las Vegas. The culmination of the superchef’s Las Vegas efforts is his newest addition: Hell’s Kitchen (Caesars Palace, 702.731.7373). Inside this pristine palace, the TV cooking competition show of the same name springs to life, where signature dishes like beef Wellington, pan-seared scallops and roasted rack of lamb fly out of the kitchen at a furious pace. It was a no-brainer that Jo Dee Messina—she of the two platinum albums, three gold albums and six No. 1 country singles—was among the artists booked to perform this year during National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Or so it would seem. In actuality, her inclusion was far from a certainty. Not because of her talent or popularity—both of which are undeniable—but rather her health: In September 2017, Messina revealed that she had cancer. In recent months, the Massachusetts native has acknowledged that her treatments and ongoing road to recovery have been physically, emotionally and financially painful. At the same time, she notes that her faith has been reinvigorated, which inspired her most recent single “Reckless Love.” Whether the song is included in her set this week remains to be seen, but this much is known: The entire country music community is grateful that Messina is healthy enough to once again take the stage—and hopeful that she remains so for years to come. –Matt Jacob

A Man of Words Ray Wylie Hubbard doesn’t mind being categorized as Americana. He doesn’t fit neatly into any genre but draws on folk, country, rock and blues. On Twitter he’s referred to his sound as “greaze and sleaze,” but that’s an oversimplification. Hubbard kicked around in bands until the late-’80s, when he credits Stevie Ray Vaughn with getting him sober. With sobriety came a new focus, and he began to discipline himself in the ways of fingerstyle country-blues guitar. He absorbed the lessons of Arthel Lane “Doc” Watson,

Chet Atkins and Samuel “Lightnin’” Hopkins into his style. Now “Wylie Lama” is considered an elder statesman of Americana. The current arc of his recording career began with 1992’s rockabilly-respecting Lost Train of Thought and runs through 2017’s Tell the Devil I’m Gettin’ There as Fast as I Can, which showcases the narrative lyrical skill he’s spent a lifetime honing. His son, and guitarist, Josh is a regular member of the band, often making Ray Wylie Hubbard’s live sets a family affair. –Matt Kelemen

RECENTLY OPENED AT ARIA off the main lobby, Catch is an experience from the moment you arrive. Enter through the floral-adorned tunnel, as lights twinkle in foliage along the 80-foot walkway where photo nooks and seating invite diners to linger. The breathtaking path leads to a bar and dining room conveying a Mediterranean patio motif for the globally influenced seafood restaurant. At a venue which prides itself for the see-and-be-seen set, architecture itself is as much of a star as the patrons. Catch’s entrance is only the beginning of a memorable evening as the experience continues with the food itself. Truffle sashimi is a proper beginning, deftly delivering umami from thinly sliced tuna and hamachi —amberjack—adorned with the decadent duo of caviar and black truffle and finished with chili oil. The bold-flavored

And buttery king crab tempura delivers lightly breaded Alaskan king crab legs atop a sharp heirloom cherry tomato montage drizzled with a crisp amazu ponzu sauce providing the dish with both hints of sweetness and acidity. While a quality crustacean such as Alaskan king crab truly needs no

improvements, gilding the lily with deep frying is hardly ever unacceptable. Grilled-tender Spanish octopus intertwine atop crispy potatoes practically worthy of their own menu spot, particularly when paired with robust garlic aioli lurking beneath. And your table’s elevated lazy Susan-esque stand literally puts the oven-roasted whole branzino on a pedestal, its wide mouth practically gaping in request for a quick pic. While the bass is the star, don’t miss the outstanding citrus vinaigrette, which delivers acidity to the mild seafood. Libation-wise, you’re in for a little surprise treat when you order the Meatpacking Manhattan combining Bulleit rye, Cynar and Lillet Blanc. The menu may remain mum but your somewhat floral take on the standard Manhattan is delivered in a Catch-emblazoned flask perfect for continuing the evening’s escapades. And save room for dessert because like Catch’s entryway, the “Hit Me” chocolate cake provides another Instagram-worthy moment. Served atop a plate with the hashtag #HITME inscribed in chocolate, the lettering is not only decorative, it is also instructive, as you’re encouraged to play with your food. After a pour of molten chocolate atop a four-tier stack, comprised of a brownie, caramelized white chocolate ice cream, devil’s food cake and a “liquid Klondike”—white chocolate ganache dunked in chocolate sauce—the pseudo-Klondike bar releases ganache across your plate. It’s a deliciously decadent way to release your aggression and exemplifies the picturesque dining experience which is Catch.

Giving guests a cocktail experience to remember If you want to meet a guy that truly loves his craft, make your way to Camden Cocktail Lounge and Apex Social Club, both at Palms, and meet the man who helped open both venues: Eric Hobbie, corporate intoxicologist for Clique Hospitality. Hobbie has a deep passion for his career, and minutes after interacting with the guy you’ll see his vast knowledge and dedication to the craft of creating cocktails. But it’s not just about concocting the recipes, Hobbie says: “You’re a maestro back behind the bar. You can single-handedly change a person’s trip. It’s not hard to make a cocktail taste good. To me, it’s that wow factor. When a cocktail goes out, I want necks to turn. I want people to take out their phone and take a picture of someone else’s cocktail. I want the showstoppers. I want cocktails to strike emotions in people.”

Hobbie’s philosophy developed over many years. After working at restaurants around New York City where he grew up, he moved to Las Vegas and worked behind the bar of celebrity chefs’ restaurants including Mario Batali, Charlie Trotter and Giada De Laurentiis, and really honed his craft. “One thing about being around chefs and sommeliers, I was taught you eat and drink with your eyes first,” he says. “I’m all about colors, presentations, textures. Over time, I really started mastering the craft.” A year ago, he was invited to bring his talents to Palms, and created the cool cocktail menus for both the lounge and nightclub. “What I love the most is every guest that comes and sits at the bar, I love giving them an experience that they deserve and never had,” he says. “… If you can impact just one person a day, you’ve done your job.” –Kiko Miyasato

This Camden Cocktail Lounge libation, like so many of Hobbie’s creations, is a perfect example of his use of color, texture and presentation. “I wanted to capture the essence of the forest, all the smells, the life in the air, the floral, foresty undertones.” Mixed with Oxley London dry gin, yellow chartreuse, Meyer lemon juice, maple syrup and rosemary air, the gin is made with botanicals that come from the forest floor, while the maple syrup and rosemary provide the outdoorsy touch. “The cocktail is served on fresh moss so you actually feel the forest,” he says. –KM

A New High

Restaurant impresses from start to finish The Stratosphere has been doing some redecorating over the past few months and the classic fine dining room Top of the World (702.380.7777) has been a major recipient of those efforts. The food, cocktail and wine menus have been refreshed, too, under the direction of Golden Entertainment’s Johnny Church and Jason Shullo and new executive chef Pawan Pinisetti. The popular restaurant incorporates seasonal items and high-grade beef from well-known ranches across the U.S., Australia and Japan,

resulting in dishes like a stunning filet mignon carpaccio and an Australian wagyu skirt steak. Top of the World’s tuna tartare, on gaufrette potatoes, is one example of an inventive flavor pairing. Though the menu leans toward meat, you can also find vegetarian options such as zucchini-squash “spaghetti” with marinara. Many of the dinner items are on the lunch menu, too, and you’ll also find a truffle burger option there. As for new cocktail offerings, try the Clingstone, featuring Cîroc Peach, ginger beer, honey and lemon. –Nina King

The hottest new eatery in downtown Las Vegas this year is Esther’s Kitchen (1130 S. Casino Center Blvd., 702.570.7864), chef James Trees’ homey and impeccable Italian restaurant in the Arts District. Pristine pasta dishes made fresh inhouse are the star of this old world-influenced menu. Seasonal faves include the rich beef cheek ravioli in red wine sauce with pecorino cheese and the smoked malfada with pork and porcini ragu. You can’t go wrong with the classics, and nobody does them better: spaghetti pomodoro made with Sun Gold tomatoes, cacio e pepe with Tellicherry peppercorns or rigatoni carbonara flecked with guanciale. –Brock Radke

It’s only been six years since Hubbard and Kelley helped define the bro-country subgenre with the release of “Cruise,” leading to an entire movement of songs about appreciating bikini tops, tailgates and tanned legs while “sippin’ on Southern … in the sweet heart of the summer.” While the hip-hop-influenced sub-genre weathered criticism from some factions within the country music establishment, it flourished among its young listeners. Its connection to hip-hop may be more than just stylistically cosmetic: As trap music helps provide an escape via hip-hop in a world increasingly made confusing and chaotic by forces beyond control of the youth demographic, bro-country similarly provides a noworries reprieve from stress for its adherents.

For a few minutes, as FGL sings on “This Is How We Roll,” life is nothing but good times and girls. “This is how we roll / This is how we do / When the world turns ugly / I just turn and look at you.” “Simple,” with its whistled hook, comes from a place of marriage and settling down, but Hubbard and Kelley reassure their party people on the second song to be teased from the album, “Colorado,” that growing up can be balanced with good times. The third, “Talk You Out of It,” may confuse the establishment further by name checking Luther Vandross in what is essentially a slow jam about skipping the party and slipping between the sheets. Fourth teaser extolls the virtues of “Sittin’ Pretty” with a significant other: “We got all damn day to do it our way / Like an old tire swing in the shade … I’m just fine long as I’m sittin’ next to you.” The rest of Florida Georgia Line’s upcoming album remains a mystery until next year, including what sort of hand longtime producer Joey Moi has in the new material. “Simple,” “Colorado” and “Talk You Out of It” have been part of the latest live sets and will undoubtedly be part of their five-date residency at Zappos Theater inside Planet Hollywood Resort. It’s been a long journey for Hubbard and Kelley from meeting as students at Belmont University in Nashville to headlining Las Vegas, but if their current visibility and level of success is any indication, the career cruise is rolling on a full tank of fuel.

For George Strait, the set list is always packed with hits If contemporary country music’s evolution during the past few years makes you feel a little uneasy, George Strait has the cure. He rides into Las Vegas semi-regularly to offer country traditionalist treatments as part of his Strait to Vegas residency. The concerts are history lessons in the last three decades of excellence in Texas-to-Nashville songwriting, courtesy of an interpreter who personifies high-lonesome and honky-tonk authenticity. Not that the Country Music Hall of Famer doesn’t write himself—he just has so many writers giving him their best that his current live sets are canons of classic compositions. Strait has 61 No. 1 hits across the spectrum of chart categories, more than any other performer, making him the undisputed King of Country. The lifelong Texas rancher brought country back from urban cowboy slickness in the early ’80s, looking good onstage in the cowboy hats he’s worn since playing in a western swing band while serving on an army base in Hawaii in the early ’70s. He joined Ace in the Hole in 1975, which became his backing band when he became a solo

recording artist in the 1980s. While Strait retired from regular performing in 2014 with the Cowboy Rides Away Tour, he still gives his live band plenty of work, playing two-night engagements in places like Tulsa and headlining festivals. The upcoming Vegas shows will be especially poignant, though, as they will be the first without late drummer Mike Kennedy (who had been with the Ace in the Hole Band since 1992), the sole fatality in a threecar accident in August outside of Lebanon, Tenn. He was 59. Strait started his country career picking out Hank Williams songs, developed his voice singing George Jones songs, and developed a taste for western swing pioneer Bob Wills (who popularized the countrywestern look Nashville became known for) through his appreciation of Merle Haggard. He had great stage presence from the get-go, a voice that flowed like honey-flavored whiskey and a knack for making connections that would enhance his career later. Songwriter Darrell Staedtler first caught him leading Ace in the Hole at Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos, Texas,

where co-eds could catch Strait singing and drink free from a keg for 50 cents admission. Staedtler wrote material that Strait would record his first album and “A Fire I Can’t Put Out” on his second, which Strait still plays in concert. Byron Hill gave Strait “Fool Hearted Memory,” which became his first country-chart topping single in 1982. Aaron Barker was selling oranges roadside in San Antonio when he got a royalty check in the mail for Strait’s cover of “Baby Blue” and would go on to write dozens more for him, while fellow Nashville Songwriters Hall of Famer Dean Dillon (“Tennessee Whiskey”) has contributed to more than 50 songs, including collaborations with legendary penner Hank Cochran (“The Chair”, “Ocean Front Property”). Strait to Vegas is more than just a residency. It’s a tribute to greatness in country music by one of its greatest troubadours who, while no longer on the road for a long time, still provides a good time when he’s here.
