Pia Zadora donated $5,000 to Project FOCUS (Forming Occupational and Community Understanding for Success). Project FOCUS is a two- to four-year post-secondary education program for young adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities. Goettl Air Conditioning donated $2,200 worth of professional tools to Lawrence Malm and David Vanover, veterans who recently graduated from the College of Southern Nevada Air Conditioning Technology Program. The award, established in 2008 by community leader Myra Greenspun, recognizes an exemplary public school teacher who is successful in using innovative teaching strategies and raising student achievement. Hinton received $3,000 to be used for his classroom, school or professional development. He also received an honorarium of $1,000 and 500 points to the Public Education Foundation’s Teacher Exchange, a resource center for Clark County School District teachers. Clark County Medical Society honored Daniel LeCavalier of Touro University Nevada College of Medicine with its 2017 Student Rising Star Award.
Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada worked with Lowe’s employees to rebuild four homes and the Henderson Scout House for Girls Scouts of Southern Nevada. About 80-100 Lowe’s volunteers provided exterior and interior painting, door replacement, xeriscaping, property cleanup, small exterior repairs and debris removal. California Pizza Kitchen raised more than $7,000 for Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada. Nevada State Bank donated $10,000 to the Las Vegas Justice Partnership, which funds the Regional Justice Center’s specialty courts. The money is earmarked for Youth Offender Court. Through the efforts of the Las Vegas chapter of the Air Force Association, Rancho High School received a fullsize replica of the 1905 Wright Brothers Flyer, which is modeled after the first successful aircraft to take flight. Affinity Gaming raised nearly $25,000 for the Alzheimer Association at Wine to Remember. The NV Energy Foundation donated $10,000 to assist Nathan Adelson Hospice’s Uncompensated Care Program, which provides comprehensive and compassionate hospice care for the uninsured and underinsured. Consultant: Focus on solutions, not problems By Rebecca Clifford-Cruz | STAFF WRITER
Ann Simmons Nicholson has never been afraid to take risks. Her professional career took her to so many new environments, she had boxes that were never unpacked over several years until she settled down in Las Vegas. Today she owns the Simmons Group, a consulting firm that provides human resources services, training and coaching for business leaders. How many people are on your team, and what is your management style? We have 11 people, but we have a vast network of people we rely on when our clients have a need that we feel it would be better for someone else to handle. I like to think my management style is to set high standards, and let people do their jobs. My business partner said I have a passion and high energy for what I do, which is infectious. This helps to get people excited about the vision and moving in the same direction. It encourages people to join the journey with me. Also, I value lifelong learning and find that people in the company who embrace that value are successful. What is the best way to achieve long-term success? Focus on relationships; the rest will come. Be kind and do not confuse kindness for weakness in others. Speak the truth, even if your voice shakes. Have a supportive spouse who balances you, challenges you and believes in you. Hire and work with the best people — not “C” players, but the best. Suspend your judgment — you do not know the other person’s story. That one, for me, has been the most difficult to achieve, and it has been worth the hard work it has taken to get there. How has being a business owner affected your family life? I come from a large family and always thought I would have five or six kids. I also believe everything happens for a reason. I am unable to have children of my own, so I’ve continued to focus on my other family members and the time I have with them. That’s why it made sense for me to donate a kidney to my mother who needed one. That donation gave us an additional seven years that we might not have had with her. Also, I am thrilled that my daughter from my husband’s previous marriage has allowed me to enjoy having children and now two grandchildren. I have 21 amazing nieces and nephews who I get to spoil rotten.

Having said that, being a business owner, I am able to spend more time on nonprofit boards focused primarily on children and education. This way, I have been able to affect more children through my nonprofit work. I also get a wonderful bonus family from my husband’s previous marriage, so I think my being a business owner has allowed me the time and energy to focus on families in general — not necessarily just my or a family. What is the best business advice you’ve received? Focus on the solution, not the problem. Anyone can identify a problem; leaders offer options and solutions without having to be instructed to do so. What motivates you? Genuinely helping others. Whether it is personally, professionally or through the volunteer work our company is committed to.
What is your biggest pet peeve? People who make absolute or judgmental statements with limited information. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I will still be doing what I am doing now, just not six or seven days a week. I hope to move to a four-day work week next year to focus even more attention on our community. If you could live anywhere else in the world, where would it be? I am so proud of this city. Not just the recent Las Vegas community response to the tragic events of Oct. 1, although I think people who do not live here now see the community how locals see it. I would not choose to live anywhere but in this great community. If you could talk to one person from history, who would it be and why? There are so many to choose from
who I think could provide me such valuable learning. One in particular, though, is Princess Diana. She overcame adversity and found a passion and the internal strength to do such amazing philanthropic work. She was so genuine in her concern and caring for people, and helped by being engaged and involved. She epitomized the phrase “to whom much is given, much is expected” — a motto I live by. Also, I would love to know what she thinks of Kate Middleon and Meghan Markle. What is something that people might not know about you? I have a fascination with history — especially World War II. Also, I give money to anyone standing on a street corner asking for help. Anyone. Any parting wisdom? The most valuable thing a leader can learn is emotional intelligence. Also, understand how to read a profit and loss statement. As a business owner, no one will do that for you.

Summit explores foreign visitors’ habits By Thomas Moore staff writer
French tourists to Nevada seek the outdoors and cultural opportunities, while Chinese tourists are switching from group arrangements to independent travel. Travel tendencies of international tourists were among the discussion topics at the recent Governor’s Summit on Tourism at the Flamingo. Gov. Brian Sandoval underlined tourism’s importance to the state during his luncheon speech at the summit, hosted by the Nevada Department of Tourism. He noted that a third of the state’s tax revenue comes directly from the tourism industry. “International visitors made up 19 percent of the people who came here in 2016. That’s up from 15 percent in 2015,” Sandoval said. Among the other observations gleaned from sessions presented by marketing companies hired by the Department of Tourism to promote the state worldwide, including in China, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Canada, France, India and Latin America: n Tourists from India are younger and tend to travel as families but not extended families. They’re known to take monthlong honeymoons. n Canadians book warm-weather vacations and rely on travel agents for a sense of security while traveling.
n French tourists are more likely to skip meals to devote more time to exploring destinations. n Travelers from the United Kingdom tend to avoid popular attractions and are looking for “authentic” American experiences. In his general session speech, Bruce Bommarito, vice president of international marketing at Caesars Entertainment Corp., spoke about Caesars’ efforts to integrate WeChat into Caesars properties’ operations. WeChat is a mobile-phone application that millions of Chinese people use for payments and to make reservations in China. “WeChat represents huge amounts of the Chinese market,” Bommarito said. “Basically 100 percent of anyone who comes from China has WeChat on the phone.” Making payments using smartphones is so ubiquitous in China, Bommarito said, that on a recent trip to the country, he was able to give money to a street beggar using his iPhone. “He had a sign with a QR code on it (consumers in China make payments by using their phones to scan QR codes),” Bommarito said. This year, Caesars started accepting WeChat payments at 16 Las Vegas locations and is working to expand it across the company. “It will be systemwide next year,” he said.

Chairman will leave Gaming Control Board By Thomas Moore staff writer
The point man in debates affecting the state’s largest industry is leaving his post. A.G. Burnett is stepping down as the Nevada Gaming Control Board chairman effective Dec. 22 and will join the business law firm McDonald Carano, according to Gov. Brian Sandoval’s office. Burnett, 48, said he will work with gaming issues in his new position but can’t appear before the control board or Gaming Commission for a year because of state lobbyist laws. In 2011, Gov. Brian Sandoval made Burnett a member of the board and a year later, asked him to become chairman. He’s dealt with issues affecting the gaming industry such as the rise of daily fantasy sports, wagering on esports and skill-based gaming.

New solar plants boost Switch operations, state’s clean energy outlook By mick akers staff writer
Working toward Switch’s goal to have its data centers be 100 percent powered by renewable energy, the commissioning of a pair of solar projects this month represented a huge step forward. Switch Stations 1 and 2, at Apex Industrial Park in North La Vegas, were dedicated by a group that included former U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak, Bureau of Land Management Nevada Director John Ruhs and others. “Less than a decade ago, Nevada’s solar energy landscape was nonexistent, but this commissioning helps fulfill that vision I had to make our state the leader in renewable energy,” Reid said. “A technology giant like Switch using 100 percent renewable energy is truly visionary and grows our clean energy economy by creating hundreds of good-paying labor construction jobs.” Power generated by the plants, which can muster a combined 179 megawatts, is owned by EF Renewable Energy and is provided to Switch via power purchase agreements through NV Energy. “Our CEO Rob Roy’s vision … is to ensure the data that runs the planet doesn’t ruin the planet,” said Sam Castor, executive vice president of policy for Switch.

The project generates enough energy to power 46,000 homes and displace 265,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, or the amount of greenhouse emissions created by 52,000 passenger vehicles driven over the course of a year. The facilities are the first to be built in a BLMowned solar energy zone, which recognizes areas that are prime for solar development. The zone helps fast-track the building process by having many of potential issues figured out ahead of the application process. “This is a great example of the federal government and private industry collaborating on improving our nation’s energy independence and infrastructure,” Ruhs said. “You can’t begin to emphasize the importance of that partnership.” The solar projects are the latest of many to go online in the state, making Nevada the top solar energy state per capita in the U.S., with 745 watts per person, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. “With each of these projects, we move closer to our goal in leading the nation in clean and renewable energy,” said Angela Dykema, director of the Governor’s Office of Energy. “Projects like these are the perfect example of what we can achieve with the commitment Nevada has shown to growing our renewable energy economy and attracting emerging industries and forward-thinking businesses to our state.”

We talked with the Gaming Control Board about accepting bitcoin, which we now accept at our restaurants and our hotel. Once we established that, we brought in a bitcoin ATM. So for us, it’s not as if we’re taking the currency or fluctuation risk. We’ve utilized it to allow people to use bitcoin, because there was a substantial amount of people who had bitcoin (but) had an inability to actually use it. Gaming numbers and room occupancies show downtown on a nice run. What are the keys to that, and will it continue? I’m bullish on Las Vegas as a whole, and I’m certainly bullish on downtown. That’s why I’m building this project. There are so many underlying positives about Las Vegas’ growth. This massive expansion of the Las Vegas Convention Center, that’s terrific. It’s going to bring more business here. You see the expansion of the convention areas and Wynn and Mandalay, which is all really good stuff. The projects happening downtown are great. Even the infrastructure projects have kept up nicely. It wasn’t that long ago that the 215 Beltway didn’t loop all the way around. I drove it Tuesday night at 5 o’clock, and I was thinking, “My gosh, it wasn’t that long ago that this wasn’t even here.” And it was packed, all the way from the airport up past the curve. What policy changes would you like to see? You’ve had taxable jackpots stuck at the same level for 30 years, and it’s not indexed to inflation. That’s ridiculous. There shouldn’t be a taxable jackpot less than $5,000. It turns people off, because in some states you can’t offset gains and losses. In Nevada, you hit a jackpot and you save some sports tickets and offset it so you won’t have to pay federal taxes on that jackpot. But there are a number of states where you don’t have offsets. (Having the low level) forces a lot of inefficiency, and there are a lot of costs associated with W-2Gs. I don’t think it generates really any revenue, it’s just something that’s more of a waste.
