Conventional wisdom Doubling down on meeting spaces keeps Las Vegas at forefront By THOMAS MOORE | STAFF WRITER
If you need proof of how important the convention industry is to Southern Nevada, just follow the money. In 2016, convention travelers supported 85,000 jobs, $3.5 billion in wages and salaries paid, and $12.4 billion in total economic output here, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Q&A with Christina Ellis
Working in family business ‘a dream come true’ By Rebecca Clifford-Cruz | STAFF WRITER
Christina Ellis started working at Ellis Island when she was 12. Now director of marketing at the family business, she oversees social media, graphics, branding, mailers, promotions, advertising and special events for the popular locals casino. “To work alongside my father and sister every day is a dream come true,” she said. “I couldn’t imagine not working with my family. When you grow up in the family business, you get to know the longtime team members and they, in turn, become your extended family.” Ellis Island is undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation. Tell us about that. The Front Yard, our new beer garden concept, is scheduled to open in April. It’s a two-story venue that will be equipped to handle everything from a quick drink after work to large private parties and weddings. This is the first major project I’ve been involved with from blueprint to execution, and it is one of the most ambitious and exciting projects Ellis Island has ever undertaken. As the Front Yard has been constructed, Ellis Island’s hotel has undergone a complete renovation: new carpets, doors, tiling in the bathrooms and USB ports next to every bed. Our goal was to make the property a modern boutique hotel that is affordable when compared with average Strip prices. How many people are on your team and what’s your management style? There are three people on our marketing team: myself, my sister Anamarie, who is the director of player development, and a marketing assistant. We each wear a bunch of different hats. Because we are such a small team, my management style is to allow people to make projects their own and to encourage creativity. I love collaborating and working on big teams, but at Ellis Island, it is all hands on deck to ensure projects are completed effectively and on time. If you hire the right people, coach them up and give them a lot of responsibility, more times than not, they’ll pass the test. What’s your favorite offering or amenity at the property? I love that everyone I meet in town has an Ellis Island karaoke story. Who doesn’t love listening to karaoke? Every night of the week, people get up there and belt out their favorite songs. I also enjoy the Ellis Island beer, which has been brewed on site for nearly 20 years. Our brewmaster, Joe Pickett, is a master of his craft.
Christina Ellis ranks Ellis Island’s brewery as one of her favorite amenities at the property. (Christopher DeVargas/staff)
What is the best business advice you’ve received? My grandfather (Frank Ellis, Jr., who opened the original Village Pub) used to call me all the time. He was always full of advice and I remember being so inspired by something he said that I wrote it down on a Post-it, and I still have it at my desk. It says, “If you’ve got it and nobody knows about it, then you might as well not have it.” What has been your most exciting professional project? Without question, the Front Yard. It’s been a long time in the making, and we can see the finish line. We hope it complements the rest of the property, and gives locals and tourists another reason to visit us. What’s your favorite place to have fun in Las Vegas? Besides Ellis Island, I enjoy everything about Atomic Liquors. It’s my favorite downtown destination. If you could change one thing about Southern Nevada, what
would it be? I would like to see the community’s arts scene continue to develop. One of the coolest things about Las Vegas is that it rebrands itself every 10-15 years. The sense of community has become more apparent, and a big reason for that is the growing arts community and downtown’s development.
we market Ellis Island.
If you could live anywhere else in the world, where would it be? I love the Pacific Northwest. My grandparents have a cabin in Woodland, Wash., so I spent many summers there. I love the rain and how green everything is.
What is something that people might not know about you? Art and creativity are both important to me, on a personal and community level. I went to school for Fine Arts at the University of Southern California, and continue to paint and do illustrations. I’m involved in a bunch of creative endeavors in town, including CreativeMornings/Las Vegas, a monthly breakfast lecture series for local artists, entrepreneurs and creative types. It’s a chance to network and enhance the arts scene. My fine arts background helps fuel so many of our creative projects at Ellis Island. It has helped with such aspects as picking interiors for the Front Yard and lettering our chalkboards inside the restaurant.
Whom do you admire? I admire my father, Gary Ellis. His ability to see the big picture is second to none. He is so entrepreneurial and is always thinking two steps ahead. I also admire Jen Gotch, who founded the lifestyle brand Ban.do. Her company has transformed the way products geared toward women are sold. Ban.do sells nostalgia and the idea of having fun, which is how
Where do you see yourself in 10 years? I hope I’m still at Ellis Island and that we’ll have expanded upon the entertainment and venue side of things. I would also like to maintain our standing among the local community.

We work very well together, and we are the first female dealers of a Ferrari and Maserati dealership in North America. We are both proud of that accomplishment, and we hope that it inspires other women, particularly young women in Las Vegas, as they work in or enter a male-dominated field. Our partnership works because we both recognize our own and each other’s strengths, and we have each taken on the roles that best suit those strengths.
experiences. What’s trending as far as financing vs. leasing luxury vehicles?
Leasing luxury vehicles is definitely a leading trend. Most of our clients purchase new cars every 1824 months, which makes leasing a popular option to ease the process of upgrading a vehicle. Corporations often purchase vehicles for company use, and leasing is an easy way to write off business expenses without the depreciation of the cars. What is your business philosophy?
The Towbins have been a part of Las Vegas’ automotive industry for decades. What sets this dealership apart from previous establishments?
When we looked for a site to build the showroom, we wanted to channel a more cosmopolitan feel, like the showrooms in Paris, New York City and San Francisco. The turntable is another cool feature; these cars are works of art, and when you see them on display, it’s like seeing a beautiful painting in the perfect lighting. In addition to automobile buyers, people come by just to see the cars, and we welcome that. Who are your clients/customers?
While we certainly have a loyal clientele of the “Who’s Who” in Las Vegas — casino executives, entrepreneurs, local celebrities and business owners — we also work with buyers from around the world. The owners of multiple luxury automobiles will typically develop long-term relationships — they want to work with a dealer who is going to give them an excellent value while understanding their preferences, all while providing personalized
We love this quote — “They may forget what you said — but they will never forget how you made them feel,” by Carl W. Buehner. What’s the best business advice you’ve received?
My grandfather said, “the harder you work, the luckier you get.” Regardless of background, if you work hard and focus on your dreams, the more opportunities you’re given, driving your goals to fruition. What is the best part about doing business in Las Vegas?
We love the close-knit community and strong local relationships we’ve built, which has really made this feel like home for our brand. Las Vegas prides itself on providing a luxurious and hospitable experience for millions of visitors annually, and the Ferrari and Maserati brands are built to exude a grand experience. This city is an everevolving marketplace, and it is important for us to focus on our brand development and keep up with the everchanging market developments.

Mandarin Oriental, that rare resort on the Strip that doesn’t feature a casino, a nightclub or a show, has found a creative new way to entertain guests. Pepper, a sleek 4-foot tall humanoid robot with wide eyes and a tablet at the ready, greets visitors to the resort’s 23rd floor Sky Lobby. She serves as both an attraction and a wealth of information as guests click on her interactive screen. “She really is a form of entertainment,” said Patricia Galas, director of marketing and communications for Mandarin Oriental. “She dances and she poses for pictures. We’ve loaded her with the most frequently asked questions.” Among the topics Pepper has answers about are places to get breakfast, how to get to a room, the location of the nearest ATM, checkout time and shows to see. “Things that maybe people would wait in line for at the front desk to ask someone, now they can just go up to her and ask her,” Galas said. “She’s that added colleague in the lobby.” Pepper was launched by Mandarin Oriental on Nov. 7 and is the first of its kind on the Strip.
The intention was not to replace any human workers with Pepper, but to supplement them. With Pepper handling common questions that can hold up lines, employees can handle lessroutine situations. During Pepper’s first two weeks on the job, Mandarin beta-tested her in the lobby and collected data from her interactions with guests. Galas and Mandarin staff are in contact with the manufacturer, SoftBank Robotics, several times a week to ensure Pepper’s software is continuously updated. “We want to make her more responsive to what we need,” Galas said. “Right now, we’re keeping it very basic.” Pepper and her human-like movements have already made her a mini celebrity at the hotel. “The reactions to her are pretty incredible. They’re in awe, like they’re seeing a little baby for the first time,” Galas said. “Seeing kids interact with her — they cannot believe it. They’re really comfortable with iPads and such, so they’re pressing all her buttons. “It’s a fascination that I have not witnessed in a long time. It’s kind of magical.”

Butch Harmon on renovations at his Rio Secco Golf Club By adam candee STAFF WRITER
The capable hands of course architect Rees Jones and the trained eye of instructor Butch Harmon could steer most golf courses to success. Yet as Rio Secco Golf Club, the Jones-designed track where Harmon founded his Las Vegas golf school in 1997, began to show its age, both men knew changes were needed. From how they chose to renovate their course this year comes an interesting insight into golf in a resort community — sometimes, the house should not win. Harmon, who first visited the area more than 50 years ago to play in the Nevada Open and now calls Las Vegas home, sat down with VEGAS INC to discuss the state of golf in Southern Nevada and beyond. When you looked at this course 20 years in, what did you see in terms of changes that needed to be made? You look at pace of play, how long
it takes to get around the golf course. This is a difficult golf course. Eightyfive percent of people who play, slice. So there harmon were bunkers on the right side of holes that we took out that were in that 200-yard range just because the good players would hit it so much past them. We wanted to make it more difficult for them and more scoring-friendly for the higher handicaps. As golf looks to not only attract new players but keep the ones it has, is there a need to attract the higher handicappers? We’re a resort golf course, so we have all kinds of players. We want to give not only the best chance to have a good score, but we want you to enjoy the experience. If a golf course is too hard, people (won’t come back) to play because it’s too hard. We’re not try-
ing to hold a U.S. Open here or hold a (PGA) Tour event here. We’re trying to take care of our customers. How would you assess the overall health of the golf business in Southern Nevada? It’s good. This facility has always made money. It does about 30,000plus rounds a year, so it gets a lot of play. ... But you have to give the people the quality. The past couple of years, the quality of the golf course hasn’t been good. I’m honest in telling you that. It wasn’t fun to play, so it was important for us to create a nice environment again. Golf in this city is a huge thing. It’s a huge part of what Las Vegas does. You have to have something that attracts people in the daytime as much as nighttime. What have been the biggest changes in technology and equipment the past few decades? Golf has evolved a lot in the 20
years since this course opened. The equipment has changed, the ball has changed, the clubs have changed. The downside with the change in equipment is that the average golfer doesn’t get to take advantage of it. The Tour player hits the ball 30, 40, 50 yards farther. The ball doesn’t curve as much as it used to — that’s why they can swing so much harder. The average player doesn’t have the clubhead speed to get the advantage. What have you learned about Las Vegas in the time you’ve lived here? Our tax structures, our weather, everything about it is a great place to live. The rest of the world saw in such a terrible tragedy how this town came together so quickly, how we really are united. We’re a very close-knit town. All my friends when I moved here in ’97, they said, “Oh my God, you’ll be broke in a month as much as you like to gamble.” I learned after about a month, that wasn’t going to happen.

convention s , from page 1
Wynn, Caesars, MGM make big investments casino companies on the Strip — and a few smaller ones — have spent or are planning to spend millions of dollars adding meeting or convention space to their portfolios. n In August, Caesars Entertainment finished a $6.5 million renovation of meeting halls at the Flamingo. Company executives have said they plan to add a 300,000-square-foot convention facility on land Caesars owns on Koval Lane. n Steve Wynn plans to close his Strip golf course this month and spend billions on a lagoon attraction with a hotel and meeting space. The land’s proximity to the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Sands Expo was a big factor in his reasoning. n Last year, MGM Resorts International completed a $70 million expansion of the convention space at Mandalay Bay. This year, it broke ground on a $130 million expansion of the MGM Grand Convention Center. It has plans for conference space at Park MGM and MGM CEO Jim Murren recently said the company would continue to add more convention facilities. “We’re looking for other growth opportunities as well, including in the building we are in right now at Bellagio,” Murren said during a recent conference call to discuss third-quarter earnings. By investing in convention space, MGM and its competitors aren’t just taking advantage of a lucrative customer base. They’re helping to ensure Las Vegas stays a step ahead of rivals such as Orlando, Fla., Chicago and New York, as well as up-and-coming locations like San Diego, New Orleans and Nashville, Tenn. “It’s extremely important for a city to remain investing in infrastructure,” said Alex Platia, a senior marketing manager with CVENT, which provides convention and meeting software to meeting planners and hoteliers. “It does help attract new organizations to the city.” Platia says the first question convention planners ask when searching for a destination is: Does the city have enough modern convention space to handle their events? “They’re always looking for the fresh thing, and they want to go to newly renovated places,” he said. “And ultimately, the city sees the benefits, because often those conventiongoers will stick around.”

The Legislature approved an increase in room taxes to help fund a $1.5 billion revamp of the convention center.
