VINTAGE VEGAS: BRIDGE OVER DESERT INN LEADS TO CONVENTION CENTER Since opening in 1959, the Las Vegas Convention Center has been an integral space for trade shows and visitors. In the past six decades, the complex has grown to 3.2 million-plus square feet and includes 16 exhibit halls, two restaurants that seat 1,300 people, 5,200 parking spaces and 144 meeting rooms for groups ranging from 20 to 2,500 people. During the early 1980s, the area surrounding the center underwent a major expansion, adding parking lots and

Q&A with Jamie Lamphere

‘As the shopper changes and technology advances, malls will need to adjust’ By Rebecca Clifford-Cruz | staff writer

Jamie Lamphere is commercial marketing director at Forest City Commercial Management, which owns the Galleria at Sunset mall. The mall next month will add Raider Image, an official Raiders retail space, to its roster of stores, and next year welcomes Bobby Mao’s Chinese Kitchen & Mexican Cantina. What attracts businesses to lease space within Galleria at Sunset? One of the biggest leasing strengths for Galleria at Sunset is the community we are in. Being a part of the Las Vegas Valley is helpful, but specifically being in Henderson, with its large growth in residential, industrial and business, helps promote our location as the place to be. What stores, restaurants or attractions are the biggest draw for your customers? For 21 years, we have been one of the best indoor super-regional malls in the area. This continues to be our strength. These stores include the five anchors and brand-driven names such as H&M, Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works. With current expansion and redevelopment, we also are seeing a growing trend in the restaurant category. All of the restaurants, except Red Robin, are new to market for Henderson and Las Vegas. This draws guests to try new concepts. World of Beer and GEN Korean BBQ are two examples, along with the opening of Bobby Mao’s next year. Guests have always enjoyed the events we bring the community. The Easter Bunny, Santa Claus and back-to-school events are a tradition for many families. We are adding new signature events each year, including our first Oktoberfest event, which took place this month. How many people are on your team, and what is your management style? Our local team consists of more than 10 people who run daily operations, security and office administration. The marketing team, specifically, is just me. My management motto is “Never ask anyone to do something you are not willing to do yourself,” and reflects a team mentality. I have a “boots on the ground” style, where I work directly with the team, vendors and partners to see different activations and promotions through. Describe your typical day. No day is the same. Some days, I am in the office working on new ideas and marketing strategies; some days, I am out in the mall working on different programs or events. This is the part of the job I enjoy the most. What is the best business advice you’ve ever received? Justify every decision made. This means that

Jamie Lamphere is a one-woman marketing machine for Galleria at Sunset. (Christopher DeVargas/staff)

sometimes you need to slow down, think about the plan you have, and make sure you understand why we are doing it and what the goal is. What motivates you? My family. I have been a single mom all of my career, and I recently became engaged. My daughter has been the driving force to push me to work hard and achieve different goals in life, including completing my master’s degree and working toward job promotions. What has been your most exciting professional project? I have been able to work on so many events and projects over the years. As far as events go, I would say Santa and the holiday season every year is the most exciting time because of the large marketing campaign, the cheer and feel of the holiday season, and being able to make memories and see guests have those type of experiences here. What is the future of American malls? There is a saying that “Change is the only constant.” This is true with malls. As the shopper changes and technology advances, malls will need to adjust. One thing, however, has stayed constant

with retail and malls: You must have what the shoppers want. This could include tenant mix, entertainment, brand names or events to create memories. And this is where the job gets fun, because we are able to be creative and not always do the same thing year after year. What is your dream job outside of your current field? The advantage to marketing is that it is universal. Therefore, the door is wide open to the possibilities of a dream job. I love travel and adventure, so I wouldn’t mind marketing national parks. The other dream job would be working for the Green Bay Packers. I am an avid football fan and have dreamed of marketing for my favorite team. What are some things that people might not know about you? I am active outdoors. When not working, I try to spend every moment I can out looking for the next adventure. I work hard to play harder. If you could change one thing about Southern Nevada, what would it be? The priority of education. Being a parent, you want the best education for your children.

With AdYoYo, people can sell their gently used items using video, or shop video listings of secondhand items posted by people near them. And it’s not just for consumers. AdYoYo also is for local businesses to market their products and services to thousands of people near them for free using video, which can show greater detail than a photo. If posting a guitar, sellers can play it on the video so buyers can hear how it sounds. If they’re selling electronics, they can turn it on and show how it works. If they’re selling a car, they can show all of its details and even rev the engine. How was AdYoYo conceived?

The idea of AdYoYo came up when one of our founders was scouring the internet to find the perfect couch. He searched secondhand listing services and found the perfect fit. The pictures on the site showed the color he was searching for, and it was in perfect condition. But when he went to pick up his dream sofa, it turned out to be a kidsized couch. After laughing at the situation, it occurred to him: “Video is the way to do this right.”

Author: Americans’ tax aversion is overstated By Ric Anderson Staff Writer

Vanessa Williamson has asked a lot of Americans about how they feel about taxes, and she says the majority initially respond like young children who are asked for their thoughts about getting shots. “They say, ‘Oh, Americans hate taxes,’” said Williamson, a fellow in governance studies at the Brookings Institution. But get beyond the reflexive response, Williamson said, and it turns out that Americans don’t revile taxes quite as much as they let on. She said their true feelings are reflected in the title of her latWilliamson est book: “Read My Lips: Why Americans are Proud to Pay Taxes.” “I know that sounds so strange, considering the rhetoric (about taxes),” she said, “but they see taxpaying as a civic responsibility. That’s a view held overwhelmingly.” While visiting UNLV recently, Williamson sat down with the VEGAS INC to discuss her book and tax issues in Congress. Williamson, who has also studied the tea party and government transparency, based “Read My Lips” on extensive surveys and interviews with taxpayers. Excerpts of the conversation, edited for clarity and length, follow: Will there be tax reform this year? No. Why? In terms of a meaningful, comprehensive, wellthought-out series of reforms that would involve actual winners and losers, where trade-offs would be made — you know, the kind of thing we saw in the 1980s, where there was bipartisan support and everyone kind of took their lumps, and they were going to close loopholes and people were going to be unhappy — I don’t think they have anything like the legislative chops they would need to do that. They don’t have the leadership. I mean, you saw health care reform. They weren’t ready, and they had a long time to get ready. Now, of course, taxation is something where you have stronger cohesion within the Republican Party for lowering taxes. But nonetheless, (Speaker) Paul Ryan had a plan, and that plan has not gotten any widespread support at all in his own caucus. Now, will they manage to get through some tax cuts? That’s much more likely. ... I would have thought we would have had tax cuts in the spring. What kind of tax cuts were you expecting? The rollback of the taxes from Obamacare, I thought was a done deal, so a rollback of taxes that hit very high earners. And that hasn’t happened.

I would have expected a lowering of corporate rate, something that even some Democrats approve of — not the 15 or 20 percent rates that Republicans have been talking about, but something in that genre. Also, I would have expected something from the Bush-era playbook: something small for everybody else so you could get these big tax cuts through. You’ve come up with some counterintuitive ideas on how Americans view taxes. What was the evolution of your book? This was something I started being interested in when I was writing my previous book, which was on the tea party. These were people who were very angry about what they thought government was doing, but I was struck by how often people described themselves as taxpayers. ... It struck me how often I’d been hearing that — “I’m a taxpayer, and ...” — it was a way of justifying yourself as a part of public life. We tend to ask a lot of questions about the estate tax or the income tax on high earners, so not everyone pays. We don’t ask very often about sales tax, we don’t ask about payroll taxes, the taxes that are actually expensive for most families. So I thought let’s do some surveys and interviews on how people feel about taxes. And what struck me was that Americans are proud to pay taxes. I know that sounds so strange, considering the rhetoric (about taxes), but they see taxpaying as a civic responsibility. That’s a view held overwhelmingly. If you ask is it every American’s civic duty to pay their fair share of taxes, you get something like 95 percent agreement. That’s basically unheard of. ... (But people are) definitely unhappy about a couple of things. One, they’re unhappy at their government — whether it’s spending the money fairly. The other thing people are angry about is the thought that some people aren’t paying their share. That’s a critique aimed at the rich — people who hold their money in off-shore companies — or that there are so many loopholes that rates don’t even matter. But a lot of people think that the poor don’t pay, either. That’s because they’re focused on the income tax and not thinking about sales tax, payroll tax. That emotional reaction — is that why taxes play such a role in political rhetoric? That’s a good way of thinking about it. It goes back to our founding and before, seeing taxpaying and representation as related. I think taxes are, in principle, the part of our labor that we contribute to the public good and we distribute according to the democratic process. I think it’s a good thing that people feel emotional about that. The problem, I think, is that we don’t see ourselves as one country, which makes it harder to feel OK. It’s harder to feel everyone is chipping in and harder to feel like the benefits that are going to other people are going to me too.

Home prices continue to rise in September VEGAS Inc Staff

Home prices continued to rise while the number of home sales stabilized in September, according to statistics provided by the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors on Oct. 6. The median price of existing single-family homes sold during September through its multiple listing service was $265,000, up 13.5 percent from September 2016. The median price of condos and townhomes sold in September was $140,000, up 21.7 percent from the same time last year. “Heading into the fall, home prices are continuing to be up monthly by double digits,” said GLVAR President David J. Tina, a longtime local Realtor. “There’s a strong demand for housing here. Our economy and job market have been improving. Mortgage rates are relatively low. And our housing supply continues to be as tight as it has been in recent memory.” The growing demand and shrinking supply of homes available for sale continues to present challenges for buyers, especially those seeking entry-level homes and condos, he said. Tina said that Southern Nevada still had less than a twomonth supply of existing homes available for sale. A six-month supply is considered to be a balanced market. GLVAR reported 4,969 single-family homes listed for sale without any sort of offer. That’s down 33.1 percent from one year ago. For condos and townhomes, the 680 properties listed without offers in September represented a 41.4 percent drop from one year ago. The total number of existing local homes, condos and townhomes sold during September was 3,571, up from 3,541 in September 2016. Compared to one year ago, sales were down 0.4 percent for homes, but up 7 percent for condos and townhomes.

Educating the next generation of healthcare providers and advancing healthcare education through our innovative learning model is at the core, but impacting the health, education and wellness of the communities we serve is just as important. For 18 years, we have been responding to the needs of and serving our communities through medical missions abroad, in providing immunizations, health and dental screenings, helping communities in crises, removing dangerous prescription drugs from medicine cabinets, advocating on important legislative issues and much more. Why? Because as a private, not-for-profit institution of learning, we believe it is our job to respond and revitalize the communities we serve. And it has been an honor to do so. Challenge. Respond. ne rds, from page 1

Targeted marketing appreciated when genuine and “Ragnarok” represent a viable and largely untapped consumer niche with disposable income. That means Las Vegas businesses — if they are savvy and creative — can take advantage by marketing to them. According to Maria Phelan, communications manager for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, this town already loves nerds, and nerds love it, as evidenced by the brisk business done at attractions such as the Marvel Avengers STATION events, including Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con, RollerCon, the Magic: The Gathering convention and the annual “Star Trek” convention; as well as year-round businessRichard McNaughten, left, and Justin Webb congratulate each other after a game es such as Bad Owl Coffee and the during the Magic: The Gathering Grand Prix at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Magic: Millennium Fandom Bar. The Gathering is a fantasy-based trading card game played by some 20 million people worldwide. (Las Vegas News Bureau)

Badge of Honor “Nerds are definitely an influential consumer audience,” said Jasen Woehrle, senior vice president at The Firm Public Relations and Marketing. “The terms nerd and geek are acceptable now and a badge of honor for many, and reach a broad demographic. You can be a geek about anything from pop culture to classic cars, or movies/television shows to comic books. One nerd type doesn’t necessarily fit all.” Woehrle sees them as an audience worth going after for businesses that are “genuinely nerd-friendly” and that have a service or product that appeals to the target audience. “With any niche group, you should truly respect the demographic to which you are appealing,” he said. “Your marketing and outreach should be genuine, and not pandering just to make a sale.” The Firm has marketed to the nerd faction primarily through social media via targeted promotions. A recent promotion was done for a music artist who covers well-known television, movie and video game themes and who has a national fan base. “To maximize our outreach and bring attention to the artist’s concert in Las Vegas, in addition to boosted/ sponsored social media posts, we filmed video content at a local comic book store with a large online following,” said Woehrle, who describes himself as “a proud pop-culture and horror-movie nerd.” Engaging in a fun way with the customers of the comics shop, the video

highlighted the artist, her music, her Las Vegas concert date and included a ticket giveaway. While raising awareness of the concert, it built a relationship between local businesses. “Yes, nerds — like all super-targeted niches — are viable,” said Diana Edelman, a journalist, cultural commentator and founder of Vegans, Baby, an online resource for vegan dining and shopping options in Las Vegas. “When you market to a small, niche audience, you’re engaging a group that appreciates being marketed to. I find with a vegan audience that my engagement and support are far higher than when I actively ran a travel blog and marketed to a mass audience.” Edelman said it was worthwhile for businesses to market to this demographic. Tie-ins and special events geared toward this slice of the demographic pie can not only improve brand awareness, she argued, but build on brand loyalty. “I see it with the vegan community,” she said. “Even if a restaurant is not vegan, if they work to market to that audience and address their needs and desires and interests, the community supports them in return.” Jim Niehoff, president of Escape Reality USA, agreed that nerds are a consumer niche with lots of potential. “To me, nerds are just regular people who have very strong opinions about certain niche markets like comic books, games, movies, etc.,” he said. “From my experience as someone who is considered a nerd, these folks are happy to spend their money on quality

experiences, especially if those experiences are directly related to something they are passionate about.” Escape Reality USA operates interactive, real-life escape-game experiences created for seasoned enthusiasts and first-time players. With locations in five British cities and Dubai, the firm opened its 7,000-square-foot Las Vegas operation in early June, with seven escape rooms ranging from The Iron Kingdom and Alcatraz to Down the Rabbit Hole. Niehoff suggested it can prove profitable for a business to actively market to nerds “for myriad reasons. Nerd culture is a huge thing right now, and is growing. They appreciate an immersive environment, and providing movie tie-ins, decor relating to movies/books/comics, and experiences that are memorable are all great selling points for this very large market.” Niehoff said a great way to market to nerds is to hire them. “When the nerdy references come naturally and the staff markets via word of mouth, everything feels more genuine,” he said. “On top of hiring nerds, we do our best to partner with festivals and conventions that cater to that clientele. Nerds can be very brand loyal if they feel that a company is high quality and respectful of their interests.” the Odd Get Even Woehrle warned that it takes time to develop a nerd following.

“You need to understand what makes them tick, never take them for granted, and tell your story in a way that is compelling,” he said. “Don’t try to be everything to everyone. Target your messages and be consistent. That builds loyalty and business success.” “They’ve been laughed at, picked on and put down, but now it’s time for the odd to get even,” said Branden Powers, managing partner of nerd-friendly niche spots the Golden Tiki and Evel Pie. “Their time has come.” Powers called nerds “intelligent consumers with an obsessive passion for the truly cool and unique. My brands are cool and on the fringe, so of course nerds are attracted to them. I communicate to the anti-social through social media, which is a paradox of sorts. Our environments are warm and welcoming to them. We embrace them and they, in turn, embrace us. I would highly advise marketing to nerds. Who wants a bar filled with jocks and meatheads?” “The geek-chic culture here at the Silverton has seen a huge growth in this area with our special events and promotions,” said Kimiko Peterson, director of advertising, public relations and social media for the casino. “Our ‘Pokemon Go’ promotion was so successful that we actually won social media awards ... from PRNews. We also had a free all-day ‘Star Wars’ movie marathon on May 4, 2016.” This month, Silverton kicked off a pub trivia night Wednesdays at its Shady Grove Lounge. The casino’s Mermaid Lounge, which also doubles as a Pokestop, has noticed a rise in customers and sales alongside the release of “Pokemon Go.” Its Poke Draft promotion offers $2 draft beers to guests who show that they are using the “Pokemon Go” app. “We credit our Poke Draft promotion with a 5.5 percent beer revenue increase, as well as a 10 percent increase in weekly checks during the same time period,” Peterson reported. “In conjunction, wine revenue also increased 17.2 percent during this time, while setting off lure modules from within the app at the lounge.” By tapping into nerd culture, companies across the valley can see to it that the force is with them — which should help them live long and prosper.
