hen you first step into the Golden Tiki, it’s easy to imagine you’ve just boarded a ride at Disneyland. With clamshell water fountains, a star-covered ceiling, a talking animatronic skeleton and exotica-themed music, it’s like a pirate playground for adults.

“So many things contribute to a tiki bar; I just didn’t want to have 4,000 square feet of only tiki,” says managing partner and thematic mastermind Branden Powers. “People come here, and they see new things all the time. I’m constantly adding new stuff.” Powers grew up in the California punk scene before discovering electronic music in the late ’80s. From there, he launched the Global Underworld Network, the group behind San Diego’s legendary Narnia raves, before consulting for record companies and nightlife venues. He even owned an ’80s-themed yogurt shop. Now, his big hit is the Golden Tiki in Chinatown. The year-old bar is such a success, Powers already has plans to expand, by adding a full kitchen, a stage and, of course, lots more pirate- and tiki-themed memorabilia.

In the meantime, Powers has some unique offerings in store, from just-launched pu pu platters to a new drink menu in October. The latter will feature shareable libations like the McLovin— rum, crème de Cassis, pineapple and lime juices and gomme syrup, served in a whole pineapple.

Tapping into his rock ’n’ roll roots, he’s had Clem Burke of Blondie, Marky Ramone of the Ramones and Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys spin vinyl at his bar. But his “secret weapon,” he says, is famed Vegas DJ Rex Dart, spinning tunes every weekend. “It’s kind of like rock ‘n’ roll fantasy camp for me,” Powers says. “We’ve established ourselves as a must-see tourist attraction of weirdness.” The Golden Tiki, 3939 Spring Mountain Road, 702-222-3196; 24/7. –Leslie Ventura

usic mogul Sean Combs has worn a lot of hats and is known for so many different things, but he’s best known as Puff Daddy, the rapping, dancing, emceeing ringmaster who introduced countless artists and songs to the world via his label Bad Boy Records. Twenty years and much moguling later, Puff is reliving those glory years through the 24-city Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour, which makes one of its final stops in Las Vegas this weekend at MGM Grand Garden Arena. The official concert afterparty, of course, takes place at Hakkasan Saturday night, promising one memorable evening. Read through the names who’ll be dropping their hits at the concert and the memories of a significant era in hip-hop music come flooding back. Puff Daddy will take the stage, of course, along with his one-time running mate Mase (“Been Around the World”); Bad Boy R&B groups 112 (“Only You,” “Come See Me”) and Total (“Can’t You See”); duel divas Lil’ Kim (“Not Tonight”) and Faith Evans (“Love Like This”); crooners Carl Thomas and Mario Winans and more. Recently announced to be joining the tour is Ruff Ryders rabble-rouser DMX. You know everyone who’ll be on this stage, and you know all the words to all these songs. t just 17 years of age, Grace Tandon already knows what it’s like to be inside a Vegas club—kind of. Better known as the singer Daya, she hasn’t really had the full nightclub experience yet. She’s been the one who creates it. “It’s actually pretty funny, because legally I don’t think I’m allowed to be in the club,” says Daya, who returns to her Intrigue residency at Wynn this weekend. “I perform my three-song set, and then I’m out 15 minutes after.” Still, it’s not a feat many 17-yearolds can boast—nor is landing a smash hit with The Chainsmokers. That electronic summer earworm, “Don’t Let Me Down,” reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Hot 100, and her own single, “Hide Away,” checked in at No. 23. Her debut album, Sit Still, Look Pretty, drops on October 7, just six days after her Intrigue performance.

“We’ve been working on [the album] for about a year now,” Daya says. “I’ve been doing a ton of shows, so I [didn’t have] much time to be in the studio. We really buckled down. I’m really happy with all the songs on the album.” While she won’t be able to have the full Vegas experience for a few more years, she’s putting in the work of someone 10 years her senior. “I went from a junior in high school to flying out to a different city every day,” she says. “I don’t think people understand the grind until [they’re] in it. The flights take a toll on you and your health and it exhausts you, but the results have been so amazing. all, at last, is here. In Las Vegas, cooler temperature means we can eat again—real food, hearty food, the food we’ve been craving and delaying during sunny swimsuit season. Pasta.

The Strip is loaded with fantastic places to eat pasta, and Scott Conant’s Scarpetta perpetually hovers near the top of the list. The sexy Cosmopolitan restaurant is one of those dining destinations that starts out as dinner before the club or show, then grabs the spotlight all for itself, partially because once you’ve moved past salad and soup and perhaps a bite of raw yellowtail with pickled red onion and olive oil, it’s pasta time, and your evening will want for nothing more. Conant’s legendary spaghetti, rich with butter, tomato and basil, is always a must-order. But it’s the season to indulge again, so consider branching out: tender pici layered with lobster, tarragon, and stunning almond-chili pesto; decadent short rib agnolotti in a brown-butter sauce with toasted breadcrumbs; squid ink tagliolini with sweet dungeness crab meat and creamy uni. Scarpetta is an ideal date-night destination, but with all these primo plates to choose from, you might need to bring a group—you wouldn’t want to skip a single bite. here’s a singularity at the Cromwell, an element of one, that makes the boutique resort feel so special, so unique among its neighbors on the Las Vegas Strip. Have you been to Daylight at night? If not, you’re missing out. This week marks the last Eclipse party of the season at the Mandalay Bay dayclub and Taveya Montero—certainly an expert on the subject—recommends you check it out. “I think when we do Eclipse, this is the most gorgeous pool in the city,” she says. “No matter where you are, you’re part of the party.” Montero is the general manager of Light—she’s the only female nightclub GM on the Strip—and has spent

much of her summer helping out at Daylight. She’s one of a few staffers who’ve been at Light since opening day at Mandalay Bay, starting as bar manager before moving up to assistant GM and now GM. Prior to that, she began her bartending career at Venetian’s V Bar and opened Haze at Aria. “It was the best,” she says of V Bar. “There weren’t major clubs like there are now; it was all ultralounges and we were packed all the time.” The Vegas industry veteran continues

to thrive because she still loves to go to work, and it helps that she has a secret weapon: Her husband is Robert Montero, a nightlife executive at SLS Las Vegas. “It’s really nice, because he gets it,” she says. “And he’s really good. He has a great mind for marketing, where I’m more about numbers. He gives me a lot of ideas.” –Brock Radke
