The Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF) is a vibrant community of voices, blending generations and cultures in harmony with one mission: to shape a brighter, more inclusive future through music. GMCSF stands as a powerful force for advocacy, using the universal language of music to transcend social barriers and uplift the LGBTQ+ community.
With a roster of over 170 talented singers, GMCSF is the largest gay men's chorus in the southeastern United States and one of the top ten LGBTQ+ choruses in the country. Our grand-scale concerts, meaningful community engagements, and volunteerdriven outreach touch lives throughout South Florida and beyond. Under the direction of Artistic Director Gabe Salazar, GMCSF captivates more than 35,000 live audience members annually, while welcoming over 72,000 visitors to its growing digital platform, gmcsf.org.
A significant milestone was reached in December 2016 when GMCSF partnered with Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood to present its holiday concert at Hard Rock Live. What began as a landmark event has evolved into a dynamic nine-year partnership rooted in music, visibility, and community impact. Today, Seminole Hard Rock continues to amplify the Chorus's mission as the Amplified Season Sponsor and host of The Chic & Unique Ball, GMCSF's signature fundraiser.
The Chorus welcomes singers of all identities who sing in the lower vocal range (Tenor 1, Tenor 2, Baritone, Bass), with auditions held throughout the season. Tonight is an evening filled with profound meaning, reflection, remembrance, and hope. It is also, for me personally, a moment of immense gratitude.
After several months away recovering from spinal surgeries, this concert marks my first time back on the podium with The Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida. To say this journey back has been challenging would be an understatement. Recovery has tested me physically, emotionally, and mentally in ways I could have never anticipated. It has required patience, humility, and a willingness to embrace progress, even when it comes more slowly than hoped.
While I am incredibly grateful to be back conducting, I am not yet fully recovered — and that is okay. Healing takes time. Tonight, you may notice I will be conducting while wearing a brace, something I never imagined for myself. But rather than seeing it as a limitation, I have come to see it as a symbol of perseverance and resilience, and as a reminder that healing is rarely a straight line. And there could not be a more meaningful concert to return to.
Nearly three years ago, what became Amor Eterno: A Requiem for Pulse began simply as an idea — a dream of honoring the lives forever impacted by the tragedy at Pulse ten years ago through the power of music. I hoped to create something that would remember those we lost while also honoring survivors, families, first responders, and an entire LGBTQ+ community forever changed by that unimaginable night. To stand here now, witnessing this dream come to fruition through the extraordinary artistry of our singers, orchestra, collaborators, and composer, feels almost surreal.
We are profoundly honored to present the world premiere of this remarkable work. This music carries tremendous emotional weight. It asks us to remember. To grieve. To celebrate love. To wrestle with loss while still finding beauty, humanity, and hope. At its core, Amor Eterno reminds us of something our community knows deeply: that even in the face of unimaginable tragedy, love endures.
For us, this concert is more than a performance. It is remembrance. It is tribute. It is resilience. It is healing. We approach this evening with deep reverence for the stories represented here and immense gratitude for the trust placed in us to help tell them. My hope is that you allow yourself to fully experience this journey — to reflect, to feel deeply, and to leave reminded of the enduring strength of love, community, and human connection.

GABE SALAZAR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR THE ARTISTS
Gabe Salazar is a dynamic conductor, tenor, and music educator with two decades of experience inspiring vocalists across the nation. Known for his vibrant leadership and inclusive approach, Gabe is passionate about empowering singers and cultivating transformative musical experiences that reflect the diversity of our communities. He earned his Master of Music in Voice from Lee University and completed additional studies in choral conducting at California State University, Fullerton. His career spans high-level performance and academic leadership, including roles with the United Methodist Church of Thousand Oaks, Grand Canyon University, and Osceola County School of the Arts. Gabe has also performed with the Chicago Symphony Chorus and the Pacific Chorale and has directed award-winning choral programs that have grown exponentially under his leadership. A standout achievement came in 2019 when his Chamber Singers debuted at Carnegie Hall after winning a national competition.
Now in his fifth season as Artistic Director of the Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida, Gabe continues guiding the chorus through extraordinary growth. Under his direction, the ensemble has expanded to 170 singers and has produced acclaimed collaborations with artists including Deborah Cox, Shoshana Bean, Amber Riley, and Todrick Hall. In 2024, the chorus earned widespread recognition for its standout performance at the GALA Choruses Festival in Minneapolis. In addition to his role with GMCSF, Gabe serves as Director of Music at Sunshine Cathedral in Fort Lauderdale and was recently appointed as Artistic Advisor in Residence for GALA Choruses, the premier association supporting LGBTQ+ choral organizations across North America.
ANTHONY CABRERA ASSISTANT CONDUCTOR
Anthony Cabrera is the former Artistic Director of the Miami Gay Men's Chorus, serving them for 14 years. Under his leadership, the chorus has introduced groundbreaking choral works for men's voices (Through the Glass Darkly (2010), Alexander's House (2013), and I Am Harvey Milk (2016)), which address issues integral to the story and history of the LGBTQ+ community. The chorus also witnessed the development and expansion of the MGMC South Florida Choral Festival, which, for five years, featured over 300 singers representing a broad spectrum of South Florida communities.
Anthony is the Assistant Director of Music Ministries at Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ (CGCC), where he also serves as the Minister of Liturgical Arts. He is a singer with the Chancel Choir and CGCC's professional vocal ensemble in residence. In addition, Anthony is the Choral Director at Young Women's Preparatory Academy, a single-gender public preparatory academy for girls in Miami-Dade County Public Schools. He teaches Humanities, AP Music Theory, and AP Human Geography, and is the school's Director of Student Activities. In 2021, Anthony accepted the position of Assistant Conductor for GMCSF and also conducts their vocal ensemble, Tropical Wave.

Tropical Wave is a GMCSF vocal ensemble, led by ANTHONY CABRERA. This group performs at special events and venues that are too small for the entire chorus. It is also frequently showcased in mainstage concerts and community events.

SAUNDER CHOI, COMPOSER OF AMOR ETERNO: A REQUIEM FOR PULSE
Saunder Choi, a Filipino composer and choral artist based in Los Angeles, has earned international acclaim through performances by groups such as Conspirare, the Philippine Madrigal Singers, and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. He’s the winner of the 2024 American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Raymond Brock Prize for Professional Composers. As an arranger, he has written for Lea Salonga, the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, the San Francisco Symphony, and many others. He sings with Pacific Chorale, L.A. Choral Lab, and HEX Vocal Ensemble, as well as in film scores like Disney's The Lion King, Mulan, Avatar 2, and others. His compositions champion DEIJ themes, including immigration, racial justice, LGBTQ+ advocacy, climate justice, and representations of his Filipino-Chinese heritage. He is the Director of Music at the UU Church of Santa Monica and a teaching artist with the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

Under the direction of Luke S. Frazier, Symphony of the Americas continues to enrich South Florida as one of Broward County's premier cultural institutions. Since 1987, the orchestra has inspired audiences through dynamic performances, innovative programming, and a strong commitment to education and community engagement. Praised for a "glittering soprano" voice, Elisse Albian champions the collaborative magic of musical creation. They find deep joy in presenting oratorios, opera, and choral compositions. Elisse regularly performs with prestigious ensembles like Seraphic Fire, Apollo's Fire, and The Choir of Trinity Wall Street. Their impressive career includes recent solo debuts at Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center. Elisse also secured first place at the Lyndon Woodside Oratorio-Solo Competition at Carnegie Hall. Upcoming highlights include powerful solo performances of Handel's Messiah and Haydn's The Creation. Elisse holds a Master of Music from Mannes and brings a brilliant, versatile energy to every stage.
ENRICO LAGASCA
Filipino-American bass-baritone Enrico Lagasca is a sought-after vocalist praised for his “smooth, dark bass voice” and commanding stage presence. His repertoire features 100 oratorios, operas, and premieres. His voice appears on five Grammynominated recordings. In the 2025 season, Enrico debuts with the Nashville and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestras. He returns to opera in 2026 in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo with Ars Lyrica Houston. He recently performed with the St. Louis, Baltimore, and Toronto Symphonies, Tafelmusik, BachFest Leipzig, and the San Francisco Symphony. He appears regularly with leading ensembles like Bach Collegium San Diego, Trinity Wall Street, Conspirare, and Seraphic Fire. Born in the Philippines, Enrico toured internationally with the Philippine Madrigal Singers. He studied at the University of the Philippines and the Mannes School of Music. Now based in New York City, he maintains a private voice studio and leads artist residencies at US universities.

"On June 12, 2016, I had dinner in Orlando and awoke the next morning to hear the news of a massacre at a gay nightclub. My heart raced as I discovered my restaurant was a short distance down the same avenue as Pulse. As someone who had spent the prior couple of years wrestling with my sexual identity, I realized for the first time that being openly gay carried risks. Hate-filled individuals or foreign cultures could render a death sentence.
The following Saturday, Wilton Manors was scheduled to have its Stonewall Parade. Many of my friends didn't want to risk attending, but I decided I owed it to those who come after me to attend and not let hate win. Despite the heavy police presence, Wilton Drive felt like a combat zone but remained celebratory.
Five years later, I visited the Pulse location, where pictures and homemade posters with the stories of the victims had taken over. Not a depressing morgue, it was a celebration of 49 lives. It is their vibrant lives that I remember and honor, knowing that today is better than 10 years ago, and tomorrow will be better than today. That love triumphs over hate."

In the wake of the PULSE tragedy—where 49 lives were violently taken, and hundreds more were forever changed—our community was reminded, through profound devastation, that we are deeply and inextricably connected. The impact was felt well beyond Orlando, shattering lives not only across Florida but around the world. Ten years later, that impact is still lived, still carried, and still shaping our present.
Music has the power to carry our grief, hold our sorrow, and materialize our love and devotion. A chorus, at its core, is a collection of individual voices that rise together as one to become even more powerful. Invincible is a reflection of our collective experience of atrocity; underscoring that remembrance must be held with intention, care, and truth by those who understand its weight. In honoring the 49, we honor the survivors, families, and friends who continue to look out for one another in both emotional and tangible ways.
"Eternal Love" reminds us that the lives of PULSE victims, families, and survivors will never be reduced to a moment; that their lives continue in memory, in community, and in the enduring care people extend to one another every day. What we feel is not only loss—it is love, held collectively, made eternal through remembrance, survival, and the refusal to let one another carry this pain alone.

SAUNDER CHOI A MESSAGE FROM THE COMPOSER OF AMOR ETERNO: A REQUIEM FOR PULSE
The intersection of queer narratives and choral music is a space I care about deeply. It's a theme I've explored in many of my works — Message Out to Sea, Generations, Our Streets: A Symphony, Verum Corpus, and others. So when Gabe reached out to me about creating a long-form piece to mark the 10th anniversary of the Pulse nightclub massacre, I was immediately moved to write a secular Requiem.
This would not be my first musical response to the tragedy. In 2016, I composed American Breakfast, a reflection on the devastating regularity of gun violence in America. The attack on Pulse was not only an act of hatred and terror — it was a direct assault on queer spaces, and by extension, on queer lives everywhere.
Requiems are traditionally masses for the dead, often set in Latin. Some of the greatest — by Mozart, Verdi, Fauré, Duruflé — have left me in awe each time I encounter them, whether through singing, conducting, or study. One of the most powerful examples in the choral canon is Brahms's Ein Deutsches Requiem. Unlike his predecessors, Brahms chose to divert from the traditional Latin Requiem mass liturgy and write his Requiem in German. He curated a selection of biblical texts with the intention of comforting the living. The work opens not with "Grant them eternal rest," but with "Blessed are they that mourn."
This framework — a Requiem that centers the living — felt like the perfect blueprint for a queer, secular requiem. Brahms' themes of grief, mourning, resistance, joy, and community are profoundly resonant. For instance, "Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen" ("How lovely is thy dwelling place") can be seen as a manifesto: the gay bar as sacred ground, a safe haven where our community gathers in both joy and sorrow. "Ihr habt nun Traurigkeit… aber ich will euch wieder sehen" ("You now have sorrow, but I will see you again") becomes a call to resilience — a reminder that we, as a queer community, must continue to show up for one another, especially as our rights and very existence are challenged again and again.
This new Requiem will be more than a commemoration or a prayer for the dead. It will be a celebration: of life, of queer spaces, and the strength, beauty, and endurance of the queer community.

And our eternal joy shall comfort you, as house mothers comforted us when we were broken, abused, expelled –when our birth families refused to claim us, and left our bones abandoned to the cold, uncaring state. WARTEN FOUNDATION
The Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida proudly recognizes the Warten Foundation for its extraordinary generosity in supporting our INVINCIBLE concert. Through its underwriting of the commissioning of Amor Eterno by composer Saunder Choi, the Foundation has made possible a deeply meaningful artistic tribute that will resonate with audiences across our community forever.
The Warten Foundation has become a cornerstone of philanthropy in South Florida, guided by a mission to honor the legacy of its late founder, Fredrick Warten. Dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ organizations and causes, the Foundation continues to reflect Fred's lifelong commitment to dignity, equality, and compassion. Following his passing in 2021 at the age of 100, Clifford Cideko assumed Chairmanship and renamed the foundation in tribute to Fredrick's enduring impact.
Under the leadership of trustees John Hand, Clifford Cideko, and Randolph James (pictured above), the Foundation's influence has been transformative. In 2025, the foundation awarded over $2.5M in grants. Their support extends well beyond the arts, with major contributions including $225,000 to Lambda Legal Defense Fund, $200,000 to ARC Broward, and $210,000 to SAGE's LGBTQ+ Elder Program. The Foundation also champions initiatives supporting the unhoused, civil rights organizations such as the ACLU and ADL, and local pet rescue efforts.
Their longstanding commitment to the LGBTQ+ community—and to the Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida since 2022—has strengthened our ability to uplift voices, tell stories, and foster connection through music.
"The Warten Foundation is proud to underwrite this timely, original composition commemorating the upcoming 10th anniversary of the tragic Pulse Nightclub shooting. That heinous attack on the Orlando LGBTQ community and the 49 lives lost must never be forgotten. We commend the Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida for honoring and paying tribute to those we lost by making this unique piece of music, the centerpiece for their Invincible concert. MARK B. KENT A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Welcome to tonight's performance. This concert marks the end of the Chorus's 16th fabulous season and a deeply personal transition for me. After 11 incredible years, this will be my final concert serving as your Executive Director, before I retire in November of this year.
When I first stepped into this role, I knew I was joining a group with talented singers. What I did not fully understand then is that this organization is so much more than a musical ensemble. It is a lifeline. It is a chosen family. It is a sanctuary where authenticity is celebrated and a powerful beacon of hope for the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.
Reflecting on our journey over the last 11 years, I am overwhelmed by the successes we have shared. To our phenomenal singers, thank you for your vulnerability, your tireless work, and your willingness to share your authentic selves with the world. To our brilliant artistic and production teams, our board of directors, our tireless volunteers, our staff team, and our generous donors, thank you for your unwavering belief in our mission and for standing by me and the Chorus through every season. You have made my time here the greatest honor of my professional life.
As I prepare to pass the torch, I must offer a crucial charge to each of you sitting in this audience tonight. We live in a world where oppressive forces continue to push back against our progress, attempting to strip us of funding, roll back our rights, and silence our narratives. In times like these, the voice of this chorus is not just a cultural asset; it is a vital necessity in the effort to combat hate and build a better future for all people.

Let’s Keep the Momentum Going!
Many of us recall a time when television would never show two people of the same gender sharing a kiss… or holding hands. Now, we live in a time when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality. We've accomplished a great deal, yet there is still much more to do. Since the late 1970s, the LGBTQ+ Choral Movement has been a crucial tool for advocacy, unity, and education. GMCSF is proud to continue this legacy through our music. We are pleased to serve as cultural ambassadors for our community, providing a voice for those who may not have one. Help ensure this work continues by joining The Pegasus Society's planned giving program.
