Known for its hospitality, SriLankan Airlines passengers are treated to authentic Sri Lankan cuisine, while the cabin atmosphere is designed to reflect the island’s vibrant flora and fauna, offering a sensory experience that brings the spirit of Sri Lanka to the skies
SriLankan presents a choice of meals inspired by the localities within its widespread network spanning India, the Maldives, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. The airline’s passengers from this region can look forward to the familiar tastes of home; from an assortment of biriyani and masala; to Idli, upma, samosas, paratha, chapathi; and traditional curries such as palak paneer, aloo gobi, gobi masala and butter chicken makhani. A mainstay on every SriLankan Airlines’ flight is the Sri Lankan meal option, featured under its awardwinning ‘SriLankan Flavours’ menu. Using heritage recipes and authentic, local ingredients, SriLankan Airlines serves classics such as egg roti with paraw fish curry and crumb fried prawns; dhunthel rice with traditional curries; kuruluthuda heirloom rice with chicken pepper curry and local vegetables; and lamprais.

anniversary date, passengers flying with SriLankan Airlines who were also celebrating their birthdays were treated to delightful surprises on board—and the festivities did not stop there. “We also gave customers an opportunity to participate in a raffle draw to win an exciting tour of the airline’s facilities, including the hangar,” SriLankan Airlines CEO Richard Nuttall tells PAX International this spring. While anniversary celebrations were a highlight, SriLankan Airlines is also receiving attention for its commitment to sustainability, including its innovative Mathaka upcycling initiative. The project upcycles retired airline items into a unique range of lifestyle products. Through this initiative, the airline has found creative ways to breathe new life into materials that would otherwise be discarded. “We recently premiered our latest range of Mathaka products, which includes travel bags, tote bags, peg dolls, table runners and mats, and many more exciting items, all beautifully transformed from unusable aircraft seat covers, blankets, curtains, uniforms, wooden air cargo pallets and other items,” says Nuttall. What makes these products truly special is the quality. Despite being upcycled, the materials boast a

luxurious feel. “Although the items we upcycle are no longer usable in our service, the materials themselves retain their premium quality. Cabin textiles, in particular, are selected through stringent quality control processes and often carry original equipment manufacturer approval, giving a luxurious feel even in their second life,” says Nuttall. Beyond Mathaka, SriLankan Airlines is working on a variety of other sustainability projects too. These efforts include improving energy efficiency at its bases and partnering with Sri Lankan authorities to help restore the country’s biodiversity. The airline has also switched to eco-friendly, lightweight carpets and recycled fabric pillow covers and antimacassars onboard. But the airline recognizes that its responsibility does not end at taking care of the planet—it wants to support its community too. “Through SriLankan Cares, our CSR arm, we focus on improving the welfare of Sri Lanka’s youth through initiatives in healthcare, education, leadership and skill development,” says Nuttall. “Additionally, we support economically disadvantaged women and youth with projects like Mathaka and Eco Trailers, which provides training to become eco guides.”

orter Airlines’ regional service and mission to elevate Economy air travel began in 2006. Now nearly two decades later, the airline serves every province in Canada and many destinations across North America. Amid its rapid expansion, Porter has earned the title of Most Improved Airline in North America at the PAX Readership Awards for two consecutive years—2024 and again this year at last month’s Awards ceremony in Hamburg, Germany. “This award reaffirms what we’re hearing from our customers - that they love Porter. With our expanding network, more and more economy passengers will have the opportunity to experience the elevated level of

service that they deserve,” Michael Deluce, Chief Executive Officer at Porter Airlines tells PAX International. Through its growth, Porter has focused on infusing luxury into the Economy Class experience through meaningful food and beverage partnerships with Canadian-owned brands. Julian Low, Vice President, Corporate Development at Porter Airlines, says the airline’s vendor criteria are very specific. Brand partnerships are carefully selected through a combination of seeking collaborations and receiving proposals. “Porter frequently scours the market for onboard products that may resonate with our passengers,” he explains. “We make vendor decisions

Porter’s complimentary drink offerings are a signature element of the onboard experience. The latest additions to its beverage lineup include beer from Moosehead Breweries and coffee from Café Saint-Henri. Based in Eastern Canada’s picturesque Saint John, New Brunswick, Moosehead Breweries is a historic, premium beer brand. on its great taste and overall commitment to quality,” Low explains. From Montréal, Quebec, Café Saint-Henri is renowned for its direct-to-source purchasing and expertise in premium coffee. “Our goal is to provide a premium passenger experience, working with partners that have the same high standards that we do. Both Moosehead Breweries and Café Saint-Henri are passionate about their craft and have strong Canadian roots,” he explains. “Moosehead’s overall commitment to quality matches our goal to provide a superior passenger experience— they also have great tasting beer.” He notes that Café Saint-Henri takes great pride in its production process, bringing high-quality and sustainably sourced coffee to Porter’s passengers. The coffee from Saint-Henri, Mr. Porter’s Blend, was specially curated for the airline’s inflight service. “Tastebuds change at altitude, so one of the more unique parts of selecting this partner was testing many
different iterations of Mr. Porter’s Blend during actual flights to ensure it has the premium taste our passengers expect at 30,000 feet,” explains Low. New brand partners are introduced periodically, part of maintaining the airline’s high service standards. “Porter’s onboard experience transforms expectations for Economy air travel. This, along with our team’s genuine approach to service, is the foundation for elevating Economy flying for everyone,” Low says.
Economy with class
Flying exclusively single aisle aircraft in two-by-two seating configuration, Porter boasts no middle seats. All passengers flying its E195-E2 fleet have access to free, high-speed, reliable Wi-Fi service from gate-to-gate, providing full web access, including surfing and streaming services. “These elements are another way of distinguishing Porter’s Economy travel experience for all passengers,” he explains.

s I sit down to reflect on this year’s World Travel Catering & Onboard Services Expo (WTCE), I am filled with an immense sense of pride and gratitude. For AMI Group, WTCE 2025 was not just another event—it was a defining moment in our journey, a vibrant showcase of our innovation, our partnerships, and above all, our people—and it was made even more
memorable by AMI being named “Best Solutions Company” by the readers of PAX International for the second consecutive year during the show. From the moment the doors opened in Hamburg, the energy was electric. The sheer buzz around the industry’s reunion under one roof reminded us why we do what we do. As leaders in delivering smart, scalable and sustainable solutions for onboard
services, we have always believed that collaboration is the heart of progress—and WTCE gives us the perfect platform to demonstrate that. This year, AMI Group launched several exciting products and services that reflect our commitment to efficiency, sustainability and passenger experience. We were thrilled by the response from airlines, rail operators and industry partners—many of whom shared how our solutions are helping them meet today’s challenges head-on. But beyond the product innovation, what struck me most was the quality of the conversations. From deep dives into digital transformation to passionate debates about sustainability and supply chain resilience, the dialogue at WTCE this year was honest, energizing and full of possibility. These conversations are what push us forward. I also want to recognize the incredible AMI team whose tireless efforts made our presence at WTCE such a success. From designing our engaging stand to presenting compelling insights and welcoming visitors from around the globe, your dedication and professionalism shone through. You made it easy for attendees to see what AMI Group stands for: excellence while remaining humble, transparency, and a resilient pursuit of better. As we look ahead, I am more confident than ever in our path. WTCE reaffirmed our belief that the future of onboard services lies in intelligent integration—of technology, logistics and care for the customer experience. And AMI Group is proud to be at the forefront of that transformation. To all who visited us at the show: thank you. To our partners, clients and collaborators: we look forward to what we will build together next. Here is to continued innovation, stronger connections and a brighter onboard future.

Masters of multicultural cuisine PAX International learns more about the art of inflight dining across Latin America in this Q&A with gategroup’s Regional President LATAM, Carlos Bittar by JANE HOBSON
Chefs combine culinary artistry with scientific insight to ensure meals are prepared properly for the cabin
I
n the golden age of air travel, luxury has evolved from plush seats to palatable plates. Today, an inflight meal is no longer just a necessity, it is a curated experience. We sat down with gategroup’s Regional President LATAM, Carlos Bittar, to learn how the culinary powerhouse is redefining inflight dining across Latin America. PAX INTERNATIONAL: Inflight dining has become a battleground for airline differentiation. What does it take to deliver fine dining in the sky? CARLOS BITTAR: It is no small feat. Serving gourmet meals in a pressurized cabin at altitude is very different from serving them on the ground. Taste perception changes in flight, salt and sweetness diminish, so we must anticipate and adjust flavours with precision. At gategourmet, we combine culinary artistry with scientific insight. Our chefs work closely with food technolo-

gists to create menus that are not just delicious but tailored for high-altitude enjoyment. PAX INTERNATIONAL: Can you tell us about gategourmet’s footprint in Latin America and your day-to-day impact? BITTAR: We operate in eight countries across Latin America, with 16 catering units strategically positioned to serve key hubs. Our team of around 6,000 professionals produce more than 148,000 meals daily for more than 1,500 flights. It is like running dozens of restaurants simultaneously, every day, in multiple time zones. Our work supports the region’s most important carriers, such as Aerolineas Argentinas, Aeromexico, Avianca and LATAM Airlines, to name a few. From Buenos Aires to Bogotá, Santiago de Chile and Lima, our kitchens are always alive with activity.

PAX INTERNATIONAL: That is a vast operation. How do you manage to cater to such a diverse passenger base with equally diverse culinary expectations? BITTAR: That is the beauty and the challenge of our work. We serve not just Latin American carriers, but also Asian, Middle Eastern, U.S. and European airlines, each with unique culinary demands. Our chefs are masters of multicultural cuisine, capable of preparing everything from halal and kosher meals to gluten-free or vegan dishes, always aligned with passengers’ dietary needs and cultural expectations. recently in 2024 and 2025. What does this recognition mean for the team?
PAX INTERNATIONAL: Operating at such scale must come with its own challenges. How do you ensure quality and consistency?
PAX INTERNATIONAL: What is next for gategourmet in Latin America?
BITTAR: Think of a fully booked wide-body aircraft, feeding passengers on that flight is equivalent to serving two or three full restaurants’ worth of guests in one sitting. It requires flawless execution. We run 24/7 operations, maintain stringent hygiene protocols and ensure every step, from sourcing to plating, is tightly controlled. Our employees are incredibly skilled and committed. Their resilience and attention to detail make this level of excellence possible day in, day out. BITTAR: It is a tremendous honour. The PAX Readership Awards are an industry benchmark and winning it twice in a row is no small accomplishment. It is a tribute to our collaborative spirit, our regional alignment and the relentless pursuit of excellence by every individual across our Latin American operations. This recognition is not just a trophy on the shelf, it is a celebration of our people, who give their best every single day.
BITTAR: We are always looking forward, enhancing our infrastructure, investing in talent, embracing new culinary trends and pushing the boundaries of inflight dining. With a regional footprint covering 92,900 square meters and our airline partners continuing to innovate, we are perfectly positioned to evolve alongside the industry. Across Latin America, we are also advancing a robust ESG agenda. Our initiatives span energy efficiency, waste reduction, water conservation and the pursuit of Zero Landfill, while fostering diversity, equity, inclusion and community engagement. This approach ensures meaningful impact through operational innovation and local alignment.

En Route International Managing Director Nick Wiley discusses how the company is scaling new heights with strategic global expansion by JANE HOBSON
A
t this year’s World Travel Catering & Onboard Services Expo (WTCE), En Route International made it clear that its ambitions are global and its strategy is solid. The company, which rebranded just more than a year ago, is seeing rapid year-over-year growth, adding key personnel across regions and continuing to position itself as a specialist in passenger solutions, supply chain services and product sourcing. For Nick Wiley, Managing Director of En Route, the company’s transformation over the past 12 months feels both natural and necessary. “It feels like we have had this

new brand identity for much longer,” Wiley tells PAX International during an interview at WTCE. “It belongs. It felt good last year, and I have never questioned it since.” The rebrand serves as more than a fresh look—it is a platform that has enabled the company to better communicate its core business segments: passenger solutions, sourcing and supply chain services. “We did not have any dramatic expectations about how it would transform us,” Wiley says. “But it has helped us talk more clearly about our expertise, to position ourselves as specialists.”
An Americas and APAC player
En Route is currently tracking £70 million (US$89.5 million) in turnover and expects that figure to grow to £90 million (US$119.5 million) by the end of the financial year. With a consistent annual growth rate of around 30 percent, Wiley says the company projects a potential leap to £120 million (US$159 million) in turnover within the next 24 months. That success is being driven by calculated investments in new markets and infrastructure, particularly in the Americas and the APAC region. “We have retained our nimbleness through the rebrand,” Wiley says. “And
En Route says premiumization continues to shape the post-pandemic airline landscape, especially as carriers elevate offerings in Premium Economy cabins
we have expanded our team significantly—from 95 to 120 people over the past year. We will likely add another 25 globally before the year is out.” The Americas operation is a strategic pillar of En Route’s future. The company has appointed a leadership team in the region, including Steve Mitchell as Director; Everly Byrd as Supply Chain Manager; Pamela Roybal as Technical Manager; and Lisa MariePitts as Senior Account Manager. Meanwhile, in APAC, En Route has made strategic culinary appointments with James Stack stepping in as Head of Food and Anuj Ohlan as Senior Food Technologist, supporting En Route’s investment in strengthening its global operations. “Our intention is to strengthen our supplier base, identify manufacturing partners that meet our international standards and work
with ambitious airlines that demand consistency of product,” Wiley says.
Tech-driven efficiency
Supporting this human capital investment is a technological backbone designed to increase operational efficiency. The company is developing advanced software for demand management and category optimization, while also upgrading its back-office tools with new invoice and workflow systems to streamline finance and accounting. Wiley says the systems allow En Route to engage more effectively with caterers and airlines, managing supply and demand planning with precision and improved logistics execution throughout the network. En Route’s promise to airline customers remains grounded in realism and reliability.
“We do not sell the dream—we sell what we have the capability to deliver,” Wiley emphasizes. “That honesty is a core part of our value system, and it leads to longterm relationships that scale.”
Customer-centric product development
WTCE is a pivotal event for En Route, not just for showcasing innovation but for refining its messaging and forming connections. “It is not about the quantity of meetings—it is the quality,” Wiley says. “And the quality has been great,” he told PAX International on the show floor last month. Part of that messaging is repositioning the company’s capabilities in the minds of airline customers. “We used to be known as the bread and cheese people,” Wiley jokes. “But we have grown well

beyond that. It takes time, but we are starting to see the results.” With a growing workforce and a targeted expansion strategy, En Route is better able to engage in meaningful conversations with both existing and prospective airline customers.
Navigating market trends
En Route is acutely aware of the changing dynamics of onboard service expectations. Premiumization continues to shape the post-pandemic airline landscape, especially as carriers elevate offerings in Premium Economy cabins. “Premium Economy is an interesting space for us,” Wiley says. “Airlines want to clearly differentiate it from Economy, which means we cannot just double the cheese portions for Premium service. Y DRAP received the award for Best First Class Bedding/Soft Products Europe at this year’s PAX Readership Awards in Hamburg. The company was recognized for its sustainable table linen developed exclusively for Eurostar—a project that showcases the power of collaboration, design innovation and environmental responsibility in the rail and airline catering sectors. The award-winning product was the result of a unique partnership between Eurostar, Railrest, Momentum and MY DRAP. Designed to meet rigorous sustainability targets, the tray liner is made from 100 percent cotton—including recycled fibres— and is fully compostable. Beyond the materials, Eurostar also requested a bespoke design feature: a roundedcorner format to fit its onboard trays. “This project came with several significant challenges,” Sintu Guasch, Managing Director of Texia, told

PAX International in a post-Hamburg interview. “Bringing together four different companies, meeting strict sustainability goals and delivering a custom design within a tight timeline all required seamless coordination. But our vertically integrated manufacturing model gave us the flexibility and speed to deliver.” Traditionally, onboard table linens are white, bleached and designed for uniformity. But MY DRAP’s Eurostar tray liner challenges this standard. The product retains its natural cotton tone—unbleached and understated— yet it still offers the elevated feel expected of premium onboard service. “There was initial concern about the natural color not appearing luxurious enough,” Guasch says. “But once the design came together, it became clear that the soft texture and refined tone gave it a distinctive, premium feel. We hope more airlines will embrace this elegant and sustainable aesthetic.”
Sintu Guasch, Managing Director, Texia
Receiving the award in Hamburg is a meaningful milestone for the company. “It is a great honour because it is a recognition coming from the industry—by those who understand the unique challenges and demands of travel service,” Guasch explains. “It energizes our team and strengthens our commitment to continue innovating for the travel sector.” Looking forward, MY DRAP plans to scale its use of recycled and compostable materials and invest in even more advanced sustainable textile solutions. As Guasch puts it, “Our vision is clear: to elevate the guest experience by combining luxury, style and environmental responsibility at every touchpoint.”

Double win for China Airlines
FORMIA also claimed Best Business Class Amenity Kit Asia and Best Economy/Premium Economy Class Amenity Kit Asia for its two distinct offerings created for China Airlines. In Premium Business Class, FORMIA introduced a bold and stylish kit in collaboration with Italian fashion house Moschino. Available in blue and dark grey with gold branding, the bags include a silky eye mask made from RPET fabric and a Moschino-branded recycled faux leather luggage tag. For Premium Economy, FORMIA worked with Canadian outdoor lifestyle brand Roots to design a compact pouch with the brand’s iconic red stripe. Each pouch is filled with thoughtful essentials for travel, underpinned by a strong commitment to sustainability. Both kits feature products from global beauty brand Moroccanoil, pioneers of argan oil-infused beauty. Skincare tubes are made from postconsumer recycled plastic, and the
ear plug and dental kit cases are produced from FSC-certified paper. “FORMIA is thrilled to partner with China Airlines to introduce two fantastic, exclusive brands onboard for the first time,” says Grohmann. “The Moschino and Roots kits are sure to delight passengers, with an elevated environmentally responsible offering which gives each passenger their own story to tell.”

Carrying on the legacy An in-depth interview with WESSCO Founder Bob Bregman and his son, CEO Nick Bregman, as the company passes the leadership torch by JANE HOBSON

As
WESSCO marks 46 years of success, a major transition has taken place. Founder and CEO Bob Bregman has stepped down, passing the reins to his son, Nick Bregman. This spring, PAX International had the opportunity to ask “The Godfather of Amenities” and the new CEO about this incredible journey, starting from the late 70s in Los Angeles.
A flight down memory lane Nick Bregman, CEO at WESSCO
38 MAY 2025
Bob started the company in 1979, recognizing a gap in the market for high-quality, customized amenities that
could enhance the traveller experience. “With my background in business and a deep appreciation for service, I founded WESSCO in Los Angeles, initially focusing on onboard serviceware sourced from Japan,” Bob says. “Over the years, we expanded our reach into the hotel and cruise line sectors, always with a commitment to innovation, quality and exceptional service.” This dedication earned Bob the title of “The Godfather of Amenities,” a recognition he calls a great honour. “I’ve had the privilege of working with leading airlines and hotel brands worldwide, helping to redefine guest

experiences. Some of my fondest memories include launching food and beverage programs, collaborating with world-renowned designers and brands, and building a global network of trusted clients and friends,” he says. Through more than four decades, WESSCO has grown from a small supplier to a globally recognized leader in the amenities and comfort space, collaborating with major airlines and brands. The company has expanded its capabilities, built strong manufacturing partnerships worldwide and adapted to changing customer expectations. “When I started WESSCO, air-
lines were just beginning to explore branded, high-quality amenity kits. Over the years, we’ve seen a major shift toward sustainability, personalization and luxury collaborations. Today’s passengers expect eco-friendly material, high-end skincare products and a thoughtful unboxing experience,” Bob explains. “Technology and design innovation have played a huge role in shaping the industry, and WESSCO has always been at the forefront of these trends.” Bob’s work has taken him all over the world—from bustling trade shows in North America and Europe to fac-
tory visits in Japan and China. When asked about his favourite places to visit for both business and leisure, he recalls his globetrotting fondly. “Each place has its own unique charm, but for my business, I’ve always enjoyed Hong Kong, China and Vietnam. For leisure, I love unwinding in Italy, where I can fully enjoy the culture, food and scenery,” he says.
Leadership transition
After four decades, Bob says it was a natural transition for Nick, who has more than 20 years of experience as Chief Operating Officer at WESSCO,

to take the helm. The transition has been in the works for some time, to ensure a seamless succession. “Nick embodies the company’s core values of innovation, service and excellence,” Bob says. “He understands the evolving needs of our clients, embraces innovation and has already made a significant impact on the company. Under his leadership, I have no doubt that WESSCO will continue to thrive and set new industry standards.” Nick acknowledges the challenge of honouring his father’s legacy while introducing fresh perspectives to keep WESSCO at the forefront of industry trends. “The fast-paced evolution of passenger expectations and global market dynamics requires both agility and

vision,” Nicks says. “However, with every challenge comes opportunity, and I’m confident that our team will embrace these opportunities to propel the company forward through innovation and a steadfast commitment to our clients, partners and passengers.” Stepping away from his role as CEO brings many changes, but Bob says the relationships are what he will miss the most. “Without a doubt, I’ll miss the people, our dedicated team, our partners and the clients I’ve built longstanding relationships with. There’s something incredibly rewarding about collaborating to create something great. But I’m not going anywhere. I’ll always be a part of WESSCO.” Bob plans to spend his retirement
travelling for pleasure, enjoying family time and pursuing new hobbies.
Evolution, not revolution
Working alongside his father as COO, Nick gained deep industry knowledge, focusing on adaptability, long-term vision and the power of strong relationships. “One of the most important lessons I have learned is that success is not just about having great products—it is about consistently delivering real value, staying ahead of trends and earning the trust of our clients and partners,” he explains. As CEO, Nick is committed to guiding WESSCO’s growth while maintaining its core values. The company will focus on expanding

• Luxury and wellness-driven amenities: Passengers seek high-end skincare, wellness-focused products and premium collaborations. • Customization and personalization: Airlines and hotels prioritize tailored experiences that reflect brand identity. • Tech-integrated travel comfort: Smart textiles and digital enhancements are becoming more prevalent. • Experience-focused offerings: Travellers expect more than just products—they want immersive, sensory-driven experiences. “While trends evolve, sustainability and personalization will remain key drivers,” Nick affirms. “Our role is to stay ahead of these shifts and continue delivering products that exceed expectations.”
Inspiring generations

its production range, forging new brand partnerships and strengthening its commitment to sustainability. “We have an incredible team with diverse skills, and I’m proud of how they show up—not only for our customers but for one another. Greatness starts from within, and WESSCO has always been about building strong relationships, both internally and externally,” Nick says.
The future of WESSCO
Nick tells PAX International he envisions WESSCO leading the next generation of passenger experience solutions by blending luxury with sustainability, technology with personalization and functionality with design. The company is focusing on three areas: Expanding sustainable offerings
to meet growing consumer demand for greener solutions; strengthening partnerships with high-end brands to elevate the amenity experience; and enhancing operational efficiency by streamlining processes and improving supply chain reliability. Nick says the industry can expect to see more collaborations, innovative product designs and a stronger focus on eco-conscious materials, while also expanding into emerging markets and strengthening its digital capabilities with IFE to bring even greater value to its customers. Key trends shaping WESSCO’s future include: • Sustainability as a standard: Ecofriendly materials and circular solutions are now industry expectations.
As WESSCO embarks on its next chapter, both Bob and Nick reflect on the company’s legacy and future with deep pride. “Seeing the company’s growth from its inception to its current global presence is truly gratifying,” Bob says. “Nick’s dedication, innovative ideas and commitment to excellence have been a significant part of this journey, and I believe he’s the perfect person to lead WESSCO into the future.” For Nick, that future is built on the foundation of strong relationships, integrity and a relentless pursuit of quality. “Bob’s visionary leadership and passion for the industry have always been a source of inspiration for me,” he says. “I’m honoured to continue his legacy and drive WESSCO to new heights. And as I coined during a toast many years ago—WESSCO is the BESTCO.”

The recognition also marks a significant milestone for the company’s ReThread initiative, which promotes sustainable onboard textiles. “American Airlines First Class Bedding was the first comprehensive soft product program to use our ReThread labelling as part of the airline’s own brand story,” Kirsty Sumner, Product Manager at John Horsfall, tells PAX International. “This validates

the approach we have been advocating for several years, which is that sustainability does not have to come at the expense of good design.” Both award-winning programs were driven by a close, collaborative process with the airlines and design partners. The Aeromexico project, in particular, stands out for its pace and synergy, Sumner says. “It was one of the fastest and most collaborative projects we have ever been involved in—seven months from start to launch,” Sumner said. “An airline bedding item must survive industrial laundry processing unlike anything made for domestic use and John Horsfall has the knowledge and expertise to design high quality, durable textile products that are still beautiful, creative and, most importantly, enhance the customer experience.”

Sumner also notes that the wins generated immediate attention at WTCE last month, bringing new interest and opening conversations about design-led sustainability in onboard products. “Existing customers are always keen to see what products win awards and we have already had several conversations with customers about what we can potentially enter into next year’s awards,” she says. Innovation is stitched into John Horsfall’s future plans. “Collaboration and innovation are part of the DNA of John Horsfall,” says Sumner. “We will continue to strive to be a trusted supplier of premium bedding and soft furnishings to the world’s airlines.”

The MAYA demo featuring Astrova Curve at AIX 2024
Panasonic’s Andy Masson talks Astrova, Converix and innovation at AIX by ROBYNNE TRUEMAN
Andy Masson, Senior Vice President Product & Strategy, Panasonic Avionics Corporation
70 MAY 2025
A
year after introducing the MAYA demo, PAX Tech met with Panasonic Avionics Corporation’s (PAC) Senior Vice President Product & Strategy, Andy Masson, at AIX 2025 to learn about the future of the marketdisruptor Astrova Curve IFE screen in collaboration with Collins Aerospace and PAC’s introduction of Converix. Last year’s AIX announcement from PAC was the unveiling of the MAYA Business Class concept, featuring the Astrova Curve 45-inch ultra-wide, ultra-high-definition OLED display with a headphone-less audio system. MAYA integrates Collins Aerospace and PAC’s respective design and technology knowledge to create a Business Class cabin experience that focuses on passenger immersion, accessibility and sustainability, designed to generate feedback on the future of the premium cabin. “It represented where [Pana-
sonic Avionics] and Collins believe that the future of premium travel is going,” Masson says. “MAYA is completely immersive.” He reveals that since unveiling MAYA for industry feedback, PAC has received enough data to commit to productizing the Astrova Curve aspect of MAYA, rolling out additional sizes. Masson calls premium suites like MAYA a differentiator in the market, noting that PAC currently has very close links with multiple potential customers for Astrova Curve. Masson says the biggest challenge in bringing a curved IFE screen to market is that it is a paradigm shift. It represents a new approach from the traditional manufacturing model, where IFE suppliers created IFE and seat manufacturers produced seating, independently. “In the past, this would largely be done separately and then brought together at the end,” he explains.
PAX Tech Business Editor Robynne Trueman (left) with Panasonic’s Senior Vice President Product & Strategy, Andy Masson at AIX 2025 with Converix
“With Astrova curve, it actually works better to partner with an industrial designer upfront and bring it in much earlier in the process, because then you can have that wonderful integration of the curve with the seat furniture. You get a more immersive and engaged product at the back end.” He emphasizes that this is one of the takeaways from the collaboration with Panasonic’s partners at Collins Aerospace. “The earlier integration produces a much better outlay, so it is changing the way that the IFE company and the seating company work to a more collaborative approach,” Masson says.
Convergence of performance and technology
At AIX 2025, Panasonic unveiled Converix, an open and neutral application hosting platform for commercial aviation that provides a complete aircraftwide solution for non-safety critical
services. The platform supports all inflight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) integration, cabin and galley operations, lighting and other in-cabin applications. Airlines will also be able to monitor aircraft data, improve crew operations, manage cabin inventories and optimize aircraft maintenance. “It is a huge differential because it is all about giving control back to the airlines,” Masson tells PAX Tech. The core concept of Converix is “convergence:” The integration of diverse technologies and performance capabilities into a unified solution. “The IFE system is an application on Converix, hosted alongside any number of other applications an airline decides to load onto the platform,” he explains. “That really empowers the airline to build their own applications in an environment that is certified on an aircraft and then they can release apps, content software, games integration, airplane data gathering, all at their pace.”
Converix also boasts a storage system that enables enormous amounts of data to be measured in years rather than in megabytes. A single Converix box on a twin-aisle aircraft can support four years of 4K media or 106 years of standard definition content. In addition, its modular approach to processing power ensures perpetual support for new applications and games. This modularity is a key aspect of Panasonic’s approach to crafting products that stand the test of time. In addition to reimagining the passenger experience through its IFEC innovations, Masson says, “We want to reimagine the ownership experience and take cost out. We are doing that with Converix and another bunch of applications. We want to bring the whole value story together to increase ancillary revenue and increase passenger loyalty. We spend a lot of time talking to airlines and improving overall efficiency for the airlines, and we are on a success path at the moment.”

COLLABORATION FOR PREMIUM CLASSES
Lee Clark, Senior Vice-President Strategy at Rosen Aviation tells PAX Tech how the company is making strides in the commercial aviation space by ROBYNNE TRUEMAN
R
The Maverick VR First Class / Business Class demo from Rosen Aviation
osen Aviation, a boutique experience provider, brought a selection of its premium class products to the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) for the first time last month, to great success. Now, Lee Clark, Senior Vice-President Strategy at Rosen Aviation tells PAX Tech how the company is differentiating itself from other suppliers in the market.
Curating a credible alternative
Clark calls Rosen Aviation the “credible alternative” in the market for highly reliable and cutting-edge IFE solutions. The company has been designing and manufacturing products for 45 years, bringing a wealth of expertise and experience in Business and V/VIP aviation that it is now expanding into commercial aviation.
72 MAY 2025
“We offer bespoke solutions in the commercial space that big established players simply cannot deliver on – not necessarily due to inherent capabilities but instead due to scales of economy,” Lee explains. “That is where Rosen lends itself, and we have enjoyed great success working with manufacturers, operators and some of the IFE titans in the industry.” Rosen Aviation is continually investing in R&D and pushing the envelope of possibilities in functionality, size, weight, power and performance. “There is always a new threshold to strive for and every member of our team lives and breathes this,” says Clark. “We could not be a credible alternative if it were not for the engrained pursuit of innovation in our brand’s DNA. Our customer base recognizes and appreciates this and knows they can call on us to solve problems.”
Lee Clark, Senior Vice-President Strategy at Rosen Aviation
In pursuit of innovation For Rosen Aviation, attendance at the Aircraft Interiors Expo last month came down to three main brand objectives: visibility, perception and messaging.

Rosen’s Maverick VR First Class / Business Class demo with AudioSphere
“If we can increase the number of views and visits, instill a sense of confidence and credibility, and sufficiently educate customers on how Rosen can enhance their current capabilities and supply chains, then we have succeeded,” he says, adding that AIX 2025 was a very successful event for the company. “In just two short years, we have gone from relatively unknown newcomers to credible disruptors and have no plans to slow down any time soon.” Advocating for a new procurement paradigm, Clark says the current one is lacking when it comes to innovation and speed to market. The solution? cabin of tomorrow than anything else,” says Clark. “It is high time that airlines stop doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results.”
The push for premium
Clark says the most important takeaway from this year’s show is definitive validation of the trends and demands that Rosen Aviation has been pushing for. “Our customers want to offer premium experiences because passengers are demanding premium experiences,” he affirms. Emphasizing quality over quantity, Clark says Rosen will focus on premium, First Class and Business Class environments, where airlines strive to create a unique and differentiated brand experience. “The bottom line is that we are not looking to compete as much as we are looking to collaborate [with existing suppliers],” he explains, “We will work
with your IFE supplier or seat supplier to realize that vision and bring it to your aircraft on time and on budget.” In late April, Rosen was acquired by the HEICO group via MidContinent Controls, forming a collaborative ecosystem that greatly expands the breadth and depth of solutions the supplier can offer. Clark expects that by this time next year, Rosen Aviation will be able to propose cutting-edge technology solutions and the entire backbone architecture to support them for nearly any aircraft in any corner of the industry. “We have cultivated this presence that is equally about innovation and thought leadership as much as it is about credibility and reliability, which now holds significantly more weight thanks to the massive increase in resources and support we have at our fingertips under new ownership,” he concludes.

CONNECTIVITY
Personalizing the connected passenger experience Viasat’s Don Buchman and Laney Hind discuss Amara, the Connected Partner Platform and personalization the connected passenger experience by ROBYNNE TRUEMAN Viasat Amara launched at AIX 2025
V Don Buchman, Senior Vice President and GM, Commercial Mobility, Viasat
iasat announced its nextgeneration solution for commercial aviation, Viasat Amara, at AIX earlier this month. Powering the IFC solution are innovations in core satellite network design, hardware advancements and a suite of digital products. Viasat Amara is designed with powerful scalability so airlines can curate a future-proof onboard passenger experience. PAX Tech sat down with Laney Hind, Director of Airline Programs and Don Buchman, Senior Vice President and GM, Commercial Mobility, to learn more about the IFC solution and how it is furthering Viasat’s connectivity solutions.
Beyond the buzzwords
Laney Hind, Director of Airline Programs, Viasat
76 MAY 2025
“It is setting the tone for our next generation of multi-orbit,” says Buchman. “We have been doing this for 12 years – advancing inflight connectivity with full, fast, free streaming. With the
acquisition of Inmarsat a few years ago, we have got all these new assets, so this is the time to move forward, and Viasat Amara is setting that benchmark.” Hind adds that Viasat Amara combines Viasat’s best assets, noting that no additional hardware is needed at the moment to access LEO and GEO. As multi-orbit takes center stage, Buchman says it is becoming the latest buzzword. Customers want the best possible experience, which comes down to bandwidth. “A low cost, great experience is really what is being requested, even though customers use buzzwords like ‘flat antenna’ or ‘multi-orbit,’” Buchman continues. “With Viasat Amara, it is not multi-orbit first, it is customer experience first.” Looking at current trends in the IFC market, he says more and more airlines are realizing they need sufficient amounts of bandwidth to provide a free inflight connec-

tivity experience to passengers. “We have sort of crossed that threshold of acceptance and so that is the problem we are solving globally. We have already solved it regionally,” he adds, noting that Viasat has been providing full, fast, free IFC in North America for more than a decade to JetBlue, Delta and now Porter. “Now the rest of the world is waking up to that.”
Personalization and partnerships
Hind points to personalization as another leading trend in the IFC space. “We are seeing an increased desire from airlines to offer personalized experiences for passengers, especially with the younger generations coming up, there is an expectation,” she explains. “With our digital products, we are able to help with that increased personalization.” One such product is the Connected Partner Platform, which allows an airline to choose from a suite of Viasat’s applications, as well
as applications from its partners. The Connected Partner Platform provides advanced application hosting and an ecosystem of partners so that airlines can integrate and manage connected solutions. Current partners include FlightPath3D, Omnevo, Mozio, Discover Cars.com, Gladi8ter and Bluebox Aviation Systems. Customization opportunities using the Connected Partner Platform also help monetization. Hind notes that while some airlines might want to provide classic free connectivity experiences, others are looking for help with monetization. “Through the Connected Partner Platform and through our ads, Viasat can assist with monetization in a number of ways,” she says. Just as onboard retail and ancillary revenue options are becoming deeply intertwined with IFC offerings, Buchman notes that IFC and seatback screens are trending toward deeper integration. “Before those two worlds were
kind of separate on the aircraft, you have an IFC experience and IFE,” he explains. “But over the last two years, we have seen a lot more integration.” When it comes to walking the line between personalizing versus interrupting the passenger experience through dynamic advertising, Buchman says, “We are brand safe and we work with the airlines on the experience they are trying to deliver to ensure it is not intrusive.” Hind adds that the level of personalization onboard is largely up to the airline, with each carrier being totally unique. Whatever the airline determines, Viasat is there to support those goals to ensure the connectivity experience aligns with the brand through its flexibility and scalability. “It is all about customer centricity,” concludes Hind. “It is all about the passenger experience and helping the airline extract what that experience should be for their customer. With all of the customizations we provide, that is what we are here for.”

carbon fibre-reinforced composite materials, in a significant move toward circular aircraft interiors. The RECREATE initiative, which Vitolo says was well received by the industry in Hamburg, manages end-of-life composite parts of decommissioned seats that would otherwise go to landfills or be incinerated. This end-of-life parts management aims to reduce high operative costs for airlines and the cost to the environment. “Several cabin product management and R&T innovation management teams appeared very interested in a possible future collaboration with Geven on this topic,” Vitolo reveals. “We want to declare our strong commitment to the decarbonization of the aviation industry, monitoring our products through calculation of environmental impact.” He says this monitoring is done from a “cradle to grave” perspective, examining all phases from the raw material extraction to the disposal of the final components.

O
ptimizing power distribution onboard an aircraft impacts multiple areas of the passenger experience, from accessing inflight connectivity and IFE on PEDs to keeping electronics charged and ready for use. Astronics AES (Astronics) EmPower® in-seat power systems use both a scalable architecture at the system level, as well as hardware Astronics EmPower with 18 Type-C outlets
and software to monitor and regulate power consumption locally. As Dennis Markert, Director of Business Development, Global Sales & Marketing, Astronics AES, tells PAX Tech, “Our customers rely on us to provide recommendations for optimizing power allocation per passenger that meet both current and future demands for these systems, making each offering unique to the customer.”
Dennis Markert, Director of Business Development, Global Sales & Marketing, Astronics AES
Prioritizing the passenger
Markert emphasizes that the power provided to passengers in the cabin through Astronics’ in-seat power systems are independent of the aircraft’s flight-critical power requirements. “The cabin is allotted a limited amount of power as defined in the aircraft OEM electrical load analysis. Therefore, effectively managing this power allocation between different classes of service and passengers is a key part of our added value at Astronics,” he explains. With more airlines introducing IFEC services accessible via PEDs, a smooth in-seat charging experience is critical to increasing and maintaining passenger loyalty.

IN-SEAT POWER Astronics’ EmPower wireless charging in-seat console
Astronics designs its power supply solutions to operate effectively across a wide input voltage and frequency range, ensuring reliable performance throughout all phases of flight. “Our solutions are built to endure various abnormal operating conditions, including momentary dropouts, voltage surges, spikes and lightninginduced effects,” says Markert. “With the highest power conversion efficiency in the industry, our latest generation power supplies reduce power dissipation by 50 percent.” This generates less thermal energy, thereby reducing component stress and increasing the Mean Time Between Failure. To further ensure reliable in-seat power, Markert explains that Astronics’ in-seat power components and systems undergo rigorous testing, including Highly Accelerated Life Testing and Highly Accelerated Stress Screening.

ers should be actively aligning with airline sustainability goals by offering solutions that reduce fuel consumption and overall carbon footprint. At the power supply level, higher efficiency results in less heat generation which reduces the need for extensive thermal management and as a result, reduces fuel consumption. “Our innovative design and high efficiency enable a reduction in unit size and eliminate the need for heavy heatsinks,” says Markert, referring to Astronics’ EmPower in-seat system. Newer airframes incorporate electric environmental systems in the cabin, resulting in less thermal energy from electronic equipment and a reduced demand on the aircraft’s environmental system. At the system level, Astronics’ newest system architectures are designed to reduce weight through a distributed model – one power supply for multiple rows – with optimized cable design and intelligent power distribution techniques. “Collectively, these innovations reduce the overall weight of the system, directly contributing to lower fuel usage and helping our customers meet
their sustainability goals,” Markert says. He points to the Ultralite Generation 2 (UltraLite G2) system as an example: half the size and weight of the previous generation but delivering twice the output power at 800 Watts, the UltraLite G2 has an Advanced Master Control Unit that monitors the total system power and the passenger power usage onboard to prevent system overloads and maximize power availability. Further down the chain, smart Power Distribution Connectors allocate power to individual Type-C outlet units and report power usage back to the power supply. The USB-C outlet unit automatically negotiates power levels with passengers’ devices. It also employs a central power supply to serve a specific zone within the cabin, distributing power within that area and eliminating the need for power supply at each seat, ultimately reducing overall system weight. “The increased efficiency of the system minimizes wasted power, reducing the load on the aircraft generators, while the lower weight decreases fuel consumption for each flight,” Markert explains. He cites a proven track record of success, line-fit offerability and a commitment to sustainability as some of the key considerations for airlines when selecting an ISPS. “Astronics AES recognizes that reduced energy consumption, sustainability and total cost of ownership are top priorities for airlines, and we provide the best solutions in the market to meet these needs,” he concludes.

by JANE HOBSON
ir travel sucks the moisture out of the human body. The skin, throat and eyes dry out quickly as humidity drops below comfort level. But Ola Häggfeldt, Chief Commercial Officer of CTT Systems, tells PAX Tech, this can be solved by adding humidity to the cabin environment. “You are flying in an environment where the cabin’s humidity is six to 10 percent drier than the Sahara Desert,” Häggfeldt explains. “Our Humidifier Onboard system is not just about raising the humidity; it is about restoring a balanced environment that keeps you hydrated, healthy and comfortable.”
Humidity and health
A well-humidified cabin improves the inflight experience and has lasting effects for passen-
gers once they disembark. During the flight, humidity will improve sleep quality for all passengers. As Häggfeldt explains, “Dry air disrupts your sleep cycles, leaving you exhausted. With the Humidifier Onboard, passengers can sleep deeper and wake up refreshed, ready to embrace their destination.” Keeping well hydrated in the cabin can ease the effects of jetlag, helping the body adjust to new time zones post-flight. “Our humidification system supports a smoother transition by reducing jet lag symptoms, so you are less likely to suffer from red-eye flights,” says Häggfeldt. The reality is, low humidity dries out the body, weakening its natural defenses and making passengers more vulnerable to sicknesses. CTT’s

Humidifier Onboard technology maintains a healthier infight environment, supporting the respiratory system and overall wellbeing of passengers. Häggfeldt says this is really a conversation about the overall sensory experience onboard. He emphasizes that dry air dulls the senses, which can make food taste bland and contribute to an overall unpleasant flight. “Restoring the right humidity makes flavours vibrant and keeps senses sharp, enhancing the travel experience,” he adds. “With CTT Systems Humidifier Onboard, you do not just endure the journey—you thrive in it.” PAX-INTL.COM

MEAL CART MILESTONES Max Choong, R&D Manager, DKA Aerospace talks the award-winning XT2.5+ galley cart and its next-gen iteration unveiled in Hamburg by ROBYNNE TRUEMAN
E Max Choong, R&D Manager, DKA Aerospace
84 MAY 2025
xhibiting at the Aircraft Interiors Expo for the first time under its rebranded identity, DKA Aerospace unveiled the XT3.0 in Hamburg last month and took home a PAX Readership award for the XT2.5+ meal cart. “DKA was genuinely encouraged by the interest and engagement our product received. It is clear that the industry recognizes the demand for lightweight solutions, not only functional but also integrated with the customer needs and satisfying for the user,” Max Choong, R&D Manager, DKA, tells PAX Tech.
A win for lightweight design
DKA Aerospace received the Best Cabin Equipment Innovation PAX Readership Award 2025 for the XT2.5+ meal cart. “We are deeply honoured and humbled to receive the PAX Readership Award for Best Cabin Equipment Innovation for the XT2.5+. This recognition means a great deal to us, and I want to express my heartfelt thanks to DKA and the R&D team for this incredible honour,” Choong says. “This award is not just an organization milestone, but

a reflection of the organization’s commitment to continuing to innovate, grow, contribute and hopefully inspire the industry to excel in the design and performance of galley carts.” The XT2.5+ meal cart is engineered for durability and performance. Built with UNI-STRUCTURE technology, its top and base panels are CNCmilled from a single slab of high-grade aluminum alloy, providing exceptional impact resistance, reduced maintenance and a longer lifespan. The full-size carts weigh 16.5 kilograms (36.4 lbs) and half-size carts weigh 10.7 kilograms (23.6 lbs), optimizing efficiency with their lightweight. “[Receiving a PAX Readership Award] positions DKA’s brand and our articles ahead of market trends rather than as a follower. It increases the competitive advantage by aligning with the airline customer needs, which leads to safety, higher satisfaction, gain on loyalty and word-of-mouth referrals. Essentially, these enhance the brand reputation, leading to boosting deals and repeat acquisitions,” adds Choong. He explains that the durability
of the cart comes from DKA’s UNISTRUCTURE technology, which unifies the top and base assemblies of the cart to consolidate the parts into one, a change from the traditional building concept applied in the aerospace industry for the last three decades. With fewer parts, the cart’s design offers easier assembly, fewer points of breakdown, additional strength and reduced part fatigue. “This improves efficiency in the spare part inventory control and maintenance activities, the shortest turnaround time to return the cart to catering service to eliminate the shortage of carts in the cabin,” he says.
The next generation
On the heels of multiple recognitions for the XT2.5+ meal cart in Hamburg, DKA Aerospace unveiled the XT3.0, the latest evolution in its XT series of galley carts. The product officially launched at the expo and builds on the proven performance of the XT line. The XT3.0 full-size cart weighs 14.8 kilograms (32.6 lbs) while the half-size cart
weighs 9.6 kilograms (21.1 lbs). The ultra-lightweight design delivers meaningful fuel savings and enhanced handling while maintaining DKA’s commitment to durability, quality and reliability. “With the customer recognition of XT2.5+ and XT3.0, the empty weight of a full-size cart is about one kilogram less for XT2.5+ to XT3.0. DKA might incorporate more features tailored to customer-specific needs on top of a base model with modular components,” Choong reveals.
Keeping ahead of the curve In a competitive market space, he says DKA researched the areas in materials and alloys, the manufacturability of ergonomic feature adjustments for comfort to user interfaces to obtain the weight reduction of XT3.0 cart. “To stay ahead in this competitive sector, with the unique feature of UNI-STRUCTURE technology, DKA also considers the safety features, ergonomic and modular design principles, innovating in sustainability to push toward greener, more efficient operations,” he adds.
