GHM:Pleasewalkusthroughyourbackgroundand careerjourney.Whatinspiredyoutopursueacareerin psychology?

Ashley:Asachild,Idreamedofbecomingazoologist afterwatchingaReadingRainbowspecialonJaneGoodall. Ienvisionedtravelingtheworldtostudyexoticanimals, withmychildrenrunningwildinthejungleoracrossthe savanna.However,whenwemovedstatesinthemiddleof highschool,zoologywasnolongeranoption.Ihadtostay in-stateforcollege,asitwasallmyfamilycouldafford, andSouthCarolinadidn’tofferazoologyprogram.

Instead,Ienrolledinateachercadetprogram,whichtaught basicchilddevelopmentandallowedhighschoolstudents toshadoweducators.Thisledtoateachingfellowship

scholarshipthatpaidforcollegeandallowedmeto pursueacareerasaspecialeducationteacher.Ichose specialeducationbecause,asachild,Iwouldhave benefitedfromteacherswhosawmemoreholistically, recognizingthatIwasstrugglingdespitemy‘good student’facade.

Itaughtinalternativehighschoolsettings(schoolsfor the‘badkid’s)forstudentswhostruggledduetolife circumstancesandtraumareactions.WhenIwas pregnantwithmyoldestchild,IrealizedIcouldn’tbe theparentIwantedtobewhilealsobeingtheteacherI neededtobefortenemotionallyneedyteenagers.So,I wentbacktoschoolformymaster’sincounseling.

Duringthisprogram,Ihadtwomorechildrenand internedatthejuveniledetentioncenter,wheremanyof myclientswereformerstudents.Thiswasoneofmy favoriteplacestowork,focusingoncrisismanagement andongoingsupportforincarceratedyoungpeople. However,Icouldn’tadvocateformyclientsintheways theyneeded.IrealizedIneededastrongervoicewith

AsIprogressedthroughmytraining(andhadanother child),Iengagedinvariousworkplacements,including schools,hospitals,communityagencies,groups,and residential,andassessmentclinics.Thisdiverse experiencehelpedmeunderstandthesystemsatplay. Ultimately,whatdrewmetopsychologywastheability toimpactsystemsandimproveoutcomesforallyouth, especiallythosemostatrisk.

GHM:Whatchallengesdidyoufaceinyourcareer journey?Howdidyoutacklethem?

Ashley:Ithasbeendifficulttofindmyfootinginan organizationinitiallyfocusedsolelyonrescueefforts. Manypeopleareeagertodonateto‘save’children,but fewarewillingtoprovidethelong-termsupportneeded toensurethesechildrenhaveabrightfutureafterbeing removedfromunsafesituations.

Therealityisthat80-90%ofindividualswhohavefaced exploitationendupreturningtoanexploitativesituation afterthe‘rescue.’Onlythroughpreventionandtargeted aftercaresupportcanweseerealchangeintheoutcomes ofchildsexualexploitationandtrauma.Icontinueto tacklethischallengebyexcellinginmyrole,consulting, collaborating,andgentlyhighlightingtheneedfor additionalconsiderations.

Lookingahead,I’mparticularlyexcitedabouta projectcurrentlyinitsfundraisingstage.Weare developinganawareness-buildingplatformopento children,adolescents,parents,educators,andeven communitymembers.Thisplatformaimstofoster bettercommunicationbetweenchildrenandtheir

Ashley:Iwouldarguethereisnosuchthingasaperfect work-lifebalance.However,myhusbandandImadea consciouschoicetwoyearsagotohomeschoolour children.Thishasallowedforamuchmoreintegrated approachtofamilyandwork.Infact,myfouramazing kidsareactivelyinvolvedinmanyaspectsofmywork. They’veevenpresentedatanationalconferencein 2023!Theyregularlyparticipateasfauxclientsformy teachingassignmentsandevenportraychildren experiencingtraumaduringtrainingsessionsforlaw enforcementpartners.

TravelingwithintheUSbecomesafamilyadventure. Mykidsoftencomealong,andweexplorenewplaces together We’vecovered42states,visitedover15 nationalparks,cruiseddownRoute66,andsoakedin countlesscitiesandtowns.
