Kloe:Myfamilyhistoryisquite diverse,andithasdefinitelyshaped whoIamtoday.Mymother, FrancineMurielParisella,wasborn inMontrealinSeptember1944.
She’s80nowandwastheyoungest oftwodaughters.Shewasraisedby mygrandmother,whowasoriginally fromParis.Mygrandmotherwasan aspiringsingerandactresswho becameasinglemotheraftermy grandfather,whowasfromSicily, tragicallydiedinacaraccident.
Mygrandfatherwasagifted musician.However,beingadevoted husbandandfather,heprioritized hisfamilyandlefthisbandtojoin theirfamily’sfabricandtextile importbusiness.Hewasvery successfulandeventuallybecamea topsellerofluxurycustom-tailored suits.
MymotherlatermovedtoNewYork City,becameaU.S.citizen,and earnedhermedicalcertification.She thenworkedastheheadnutritionist atMountSinaiHospital,whereshe createdspecializedmealplansfor post-surgerypatients.Sheeventually marriedmyfather,JoelStanley Klotz,atCityHallinManhattan, andtheysoonhadmysisterandme.
Myfather’sparentswerefirstgenerationRussian-Jewish immigrants.Hegraduatedfrom NYUwithanengineeringdegree andthentookoverthesmallfamily businessintheBronxthathis parentsandbrotherhadstarted.He grewitintooneofthelargestschool supplydistributioncompaniesinthe region.

Kloe:Mymother’srecent admissiontoanursingfacility wasaturningpoint.Imoved nearbytohelpmanagehercare, andbeingsoinvolvedinher treatmentandrecoveryreally openedmyeyestothepandemic’s impactandtheweaknessesinour healthcareinfrastructure.It becameclearthatwedesperately needtorebuildthesesystems, whicharefailingpeopleacross thecountry Thisrealizationdrove metoestablishthe United Senior Association,aninitiativeto advocateforourelderly population.Isincerelyhopeothers willjoinusinthiseffortto improvelivesforfamiliesand protectfuturegenerations.
Mymother’sadmissiontothe skillednursingfacilitycameover twoyearsafteraninvasive procedurethatrequiredongoing rehabilitationandphysicaltherapy tomaintainhermobility.Her conditionhadbecomechronic, andthisallhappenedduringthe heightofthepandemic.
Itwasabigadjustmentforher. She'dalwaysbeensoindependent, activeinherchurch,andengaged withfriendsandthecommunity Then,unexpectedly,herdoctor informedmesheneeded emergencysurgerytopreventa potentiallyfatalaneurysm.Itwas adifficultdecisiontomake,but necessary.Ireassuredherand promisedtobethereforher throughoutherrecovery
Movingclosertoherallowedmetospendalotoftime withherassheadjustedtohernewenvironment.Ialso becameclosetotheotherresidentsandthestaff.Because ofsafetyprecautions,therewerefewvisitors,andthe residentswereoftenisolated.Weformedaclosebond, sharingstoriesandlookingthroughphotoalbums.Igot toknowthesepeopleonadeeplevel,eventhoughwe werestrangersjustmonthsbefore.
Inadditiontothis,mymotherfacedapotential amputationduetoineffectivetreatmentfromherdoctor. Thankfully,shefoundasolutionwithRXWound,a medicalgroupspecializinginstemcelltherapy Within twoweeks,shewaswalkingagainafterayearof hospitalizationsandanunnecessarysurgerythathadn’t helped.
