TheWeightofaName,ThePullofaCalling

OnecannottellthestoryofDr.ChidiAchebewithout firstacknowledgingthename.Hislatefather,Chinua Achebe,wasaliterarygiantwho,ashissonnotes, ironicallysetouttobeaphysicianhimselfbeforethe worldofliteratureclaimedhim.Theworldisgratefulhe madethatchoice.Butthemedicalpathnottakenbythe fatherseemedtobeckontheson.Thatpullwasnurtured byhismotherandhismaternaluncle,Dr.SamOkoli,an ObstetricianandGynecologistwhoownedhisown hospitalinLagos,Nigeria.Theywerethementorswho fannedtheflamesofhismedicalambitions.

HisacademicjourneyisagrandtourofAmericanelite institutions.ItbeganatBardCollegeinNewYorkStatefor aB.S.inNaturalSciences.Fromthere,thepathledtoNew Hampshire,toamedicaldoctoratefromDartmouthMedical School.ButAchebewasnotdone.HepursuedaMaster'sin PublicHealthfromtheHarvardSchoolofPublicHealth and,pivotally,aMaster’sinBusinessAdministration (MBA)fromtheYaleUniversitySchoolofManagement.

Thatthirddegree,theMBA,wasthecatalyst. “The first two choices might be obvious to most – as they are significant and related, - but the third (the MBA) literally ‘re-organized the neurons in my brain,’” Dr.Chidireflects. “It was after the MBA at Yale that the business ideas started flowing and the strategies and solutions of how to get them done began to come together – like the ‘unfurling of a flower or opening of inner casements of treasure.'”.

Beforethegrandenterprise,therewasthegroundwork.Dr ChidiservedasthePresidentandCEOofHarvardStreet NeighborhoodHealthCenterandtheMedicalDirector ofWhittierStreetHealthCenterinBoston.Hehelda positionasanassistantprofessoratTuftsUniversitySchool ofMedicine.Hewasadoctor,apublichealthprofessional, aleaderinthecommunity.Buthisfather'squestionwas alwaysthere,nudginghimtowardalargercanvas.

ADiagnosisforaContinent

TheproblemDr.Chidiandhispartnerssetouttosolveis stark,adiagnosisonacontinentalscale.Hepointstothe datafromtheInternationalFinanceCorporation(IFC): “Health care in Sub-Saharan Africa remains the worst in the world, with few countries able to spend the $34 to $40 a year per person that the World Health Organization considers the minimum for basic health care.” Whileglobal effortshavetargetedspecificdiseaseslikeHIV/AIDS, tuberculosis,andmalaria,thefundamentalinfrastructureto delivercareismissing.

Thenumbersarestaggering.TheIFCestimatesaneedfor $25-$30 billioninnewinvestmentoverthenextdecadeto meetAfrica'shealthcaredemand.Thecontinentneeds approximately900,000newhealthcareworkersandhalfa millionmorehospitalbedsthancurrentlyexist.

ThisisthechasmAIDEanditsaffiliateswerecreatedtofill. Foundedacross2016,2017,and2024,thegroup’smission isprecise:“Toimprovethehealthofindividualsand communitiesinAfricabycreatingasustainable, integrated,patient-centeredhealthcaredeliverysystem

thatiscommittedtothedeliveryofworldclasshealthcare.” Itisadirectresponsetothe “chronic pathologies plaguing health delivery systems on the African continent.”

TheAIDEBlueprint:AnEcosystemofImpact

Dr.Chidi’sstrategyisnotmerelytobuildhospitals.Itisto createanentireecosystem.Thegroup’sfocusspans Healthcare,Agriculture,RenewableEnergy,and Telecommunications.Thismulti-prongedapproachrecognizes thathealthisnotcreatedinavacuum.Itisaproductofits environment.

TheManBehindtheMission:Challengesand InflectionPoints

Thejourneyhasnotbeenwithoutitschallenges. Dr.Chidispeakscandidlyaboutthem,starting withtheonesfromwithin. “Earlier in my career, I did not feel fully prepared and always felt a need to acquire more skills,” headmits.His responsewasrelentless,continuouslearning. “Till this day, I consider myself, my greatest critic and inspiration,” hesays.

Hehasalsofacedexternalobstacles,like workplacebias.Hisstrategyfordealingwithsuch difficultiesistokeepacoolheadandremain polite,whichhebelieves “always works in the long term and can engender respect from your co-workers.” Heviewschallengesnotas roadblocks,butasopportunitiesforgrowth,tobe tackledwithexpertise,communication,anda positiveattitude.

Throughoutitall,Dr.Chidireturnstohisfaith. “As a man of faith, I rely heavily on God for guidance in all the things I do and decisions I make,” heshares.Thisfaithformsthebedrockof whathecallshis “inflection points”—moments ofdramaticpositivechange.Thefirstwasan internalrealization: “Place God at the center of all things.” Thesecondwassurroundinghimself withfamilyandfriends.Thethirdwashis education,particularlytheMBAthatreframedhis thinking.

Thegreatesthonorofhiscareer,hesays,hasbeen establishinghisgroupofcompanies.Andheis quicktocreditthenetworkofmentorswho guidedhim,fromhisparentsanduncleto teachersateverystageofhiseducation.

FutureisaVerb

WhenDr.Chidilookstothefuture,thenumbersare, onceagain,ambitious.Heenvisionsaprivatelyowned healthcaresystemspanningseveralAfricancountries. Theeconomicimpactwouldbeimmense:thecreationof over60,280totaljobsoverfiveyears,with6,100of thembeingdirectemployment.Bytheendofthatfiveyearperiod,heprojectsthatthesystemwillemploy nearly5,500people. “Attain these lofty goals and the UN SDGs keeps me very excited,” hesays,thepassion evidentinhiswords.

Thisdriveisbalancedbyapersonalphilosophyhe summarizesas“GFE–God,Family,Everythingelse.”

Tomanagethe “Everything Else,” whichincludeshis vastbusinessresponsibilities,hehasanotheracronym, onethatfeelsparticularlymodern:“GPTCHATS.”It'sa mnemonicforhisguidingprinciples:Godfirst.Plan, Patience,andSelfCare.Teamdevelopment. CompassionandCoreValues.HumilityandHeart,with afocusonthepublicgood.AccountabilityandZero Corruption.Tenacitytodoboldthings.Andfinally, Silence—thesimple,profoundactto “shut up and work.”

Theultimatevaluepropositionisnotaboutprofit, butaboutafundamentalprincipleofhumandignity. Dr.Caldwell-Harveyhasseenthisfirsthand, notjustinherclientsbutinherownlife,and itbecamethefoundationalideafor TheBlackgirlDoctoracompanyshe foundedin2017.Herbiggestpetpeeve,she says,is“wastedpotential.’’

InarecentspotlightsessionattheAPA2025annual conventioninDenver,Colorado,Dr.Caldwell-Harvey,along withafewofhercolleaguesfromTheBlackGirlDoctor, presentedatalktitled,“LivingtheDreamWhileBarely Living:APsychologist’sReckoningwithSuccess,Burnout, andaChoicetoPivot.”Thesession,whichtookplaceon Thursday,August7th,from10amto11amMT,wasa candidexplorationofthehighcostofoverachievement.It broughttogetherthreeBlackwomenpsychologistswho,after achievingwhatmanyintheirfieldstrivefor,found themselvesburnedout,disillusioned,andunwell.Theyall madeachoicetopivot,toredefinesuccessinawaythatmade roomforrest,purposealignment,sustainability,and,of course,joy.Thisconversationamplifiesvoicesandstoriesthat areoftenleftoutoftraditionalmodelsofsuccess,exploring howhonoringdiverselivedexperiences,especiallythose shapedbyrace,gender,andculturalcontext,canrevealnew pathwaysforthriving.

ThePowerofBeingUnderstood

Thenumberwas17.AreportfromKalamazooCounty revealedastatisticthatwasbothadiagnosisandan indictment:only17%ofhealthcareprovidersinthecounty werepeopleofcolor.ForValarie,thiswasn’tjustdata.It wasthestoryofwhyaBlackteenagermightnotconnect withhistherapist.ItwasthereasonaLatinamothermight struggletohavehersymptomstakenseriously

Itwasthemathematicalproofofagapshehadwitnessed anecdotallyforyears.Thissignificantunderrepresentation, asshesawit,hadprofoundanddamagingimplications. Howcanacommunityachievewellnesswhenthevery peoplechargedwithitscaredonot,andoftencannot, understanditsculturalneedsandexperiences?

Thestatisticlaidbarethestructuralnatureoftheproblem. Youcanbreakstigmasincommunityhallsalldaylong, butwhathappenswhenthosenewlyemboldenedpeople reachoutforhelpandfindnoonewholookslikethem,no onewhounderstandstheircontext?Thegapwasn’tjust oneofunderstanding;itwasoneofaccess.The17% wasn’taproblemtobestudied;itwasawalltobe dismantled.AndValarieCunninghambuildsthings.

TheBricks-and-MortarofHope

Longbeforethe17%statisticgaveheranewrallyingcry, Valariewasalreadybuilding.InOctober2003,she foundedtheSynergyHealthCenter(SHC)in Kalamazoo.Forwhatisnowapproaching22years,SHC hasbeenaphysicalanchorofhope,aplacededicatedto providingculturallysensitivementalhealth,substance abuse,andwellnessservicesforchildren,youth,and families.Theveryname,Synergy,speakstoher philosophy—thebeliefthattruehealthcomesfromthe interactionofdifferentpartsworkinginharmony.

SHCwasabolddeclaration.Inafieldoftenslowtoadapt, Valariebuiltanorganizationfromthegroundupwith culturalcompetencynotasanafterthoughtoramodulein atrainingmanual,butasitsfoundationalprinciple.Itwas andisaleadingorganization,atestamenttohervisionand alivinglaboratoryforthekindofcaresheknewwas possible.Itestablishedherasaformidablepresencein Michigan,aleaderwithadeeppassionforequitablecare.

ButthephysicalwallsoftheSynergyHealthCenter couldonlyreachsofar.The17%problemwasbigger thanKalamazoo.ItwasanAmericanproblem.Andit wouldrequireamodern,scalablesolution.

FortheBlackandBrownwellnessproviderswhojoin, theNetworkismorethanalisting;it’sacollective.It'sa digitalspacethatvalidatestheirimportanceandamplifies theirreach,makingthemvisibletothecommunitiesthat needthemmost.Valariehadtakenthe17%statisticnotas apointofdespair,butasablueprintforwhattobuild next.
