successful fundraising event to date, raising over £30,000 in one evening. It was marvellous that Lord Coe was able to play such a central role on the night amidst his hectic schedule thanks to a special School contact.
A major review of our bursarial offering has taken place through a Scholarships & Bursaries Advisory Group. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members - including staff, governors, current and former parents and Old Girls. The ethos and philosophy behind bursaries development, and other detail agreed by this representative group, is set out in this report.
At the ball, Lord Coe also helped us to relaunch our legacy programme under the new title ‘Pass on the Light’. This was fitting given the links uncovered between Sherborne Girls’ motto and original torch badge (now adopted by Sherborne Old Girls) and the Olympic Games.*
I am grateful to the many parents, staff, governors, Old Girls and other Friends of Sherborne Girls who got behind the launch of the Candlelight Bursaries Fund on 22 June by attending or otherwise supporting the Candlelight Ball. This was the School’s most ambitious and
This year has also seen an architectural competition for a new creative hub at the heart of the School, as part of a long-term master plan for the whole site. An awardwinning firm of architects has been commissioned and their scheme will be unveiled in due course. While the School

Jenny Dwyer HEADMISTRESS Sherborne Girls is going from strength to strength. The success of our 5-year strategic plan - Growing for the Future - is evidenced by our increased numbers in an economic downturn to the point where we are full, with 440 girls in the School and healthy lists for future years. A three-year multi-million pound investment in developing new buildings and facilities and refurbishing tired and outdated ones means the School is now widely bright and contemporary - an inspirational place for teaching, learning and living. This year, behind the scenes, we turn our attention to raising the significant funds needed to enable us to complete our 5-year phase of growth and modernisation by developing new teaching and performance spaces for Music and Drama, with a central atrium also linking up Art
and creating exhibition space - a creative heart for the School. We want to provide wider support in the form of means-tested bursaries so that we are able to offer more places to talented students and give girls the opportunity of a life-changing education. We particularly want to build regular support to fund girls on Candlelight Bursaries. I am delighted that the Candlelight Bursaries Fund was given such a great start last term and I hope that this year’s Annual Fund, which focuses on raising regular gifts for girls who need a boarding education, will attract lots more support. Donations given last year have again benefited girls throughout the School and I hope you will enjoy reading about all that your recent generosity has helped us to achieve. Thank you.

The following is a summary of the discussions and decisions made by the Scholarships & Bursaries Advisory Group.
ETHOS & PHILOSOPHY In keeping with the Christian ethos on which the School was founded we wish to widen acccess to the high quality education available at Sherborne Girls. We want to suppport two groups of students who otherwise would not be able to attend this School. Firstly, those who would benefit from a boarding education. Secondly, those who have a particular talent or strength which can be nurtured here.
What are Bursaries? Bursaries are means-tested financial awards to enable girls to attend the School whose families could not afford to pay for them to do so otherwise. They are usually awarded to girls before they join the School and are typically worth between 5% - 45% of the fees but can be up to 100%, plus extras such as uniform and school trips. Bursaries at Sherborne Girls can be awarded as top ups to scholarships. At present, most are funded by the School with the remainder funded by donated gifts.
What are Scholarships?
Bursary funds from 2013 The Candlelight Bursaries Fund CHANGING LIVES This new scheme, launched in June 2013, is to provide 100% bursaries, plus extras (where needed) to girls with the promise and character to thrive at Sherborne Girls, where a boarding education would be life-changing for both girl and family. Key to its success is the careful selection of candidates and their year-round support, in holidays as well as in termtime. We have, therefore, in the first instance, formed close associations with charities Kids Company and The SpringBoard Bursary Foundation. Candlelight Bursaries will be co-funded by the School (through fundraising) and by the charities we are working with.
The Scholarships & Bursaries Fund BUILDING EXCELLENCE As a leading girls’ boarding school our objective is to attract exceptionally able girls and enable them to achieve their full potential while inspiring other students. To this end, we will continue to seek support for our established Scholarships & Bursaries Fund. This is used to top up scholarships with means-tested bursaries so that we can accept talented girls whatever their families’ means. This scheme is open to all, including daughters of Sherborne Old Girls and local applicants.
AIMS By the School’s 125th anniversary in 2024 we aim: • Through increased regular annual giving, to be able to change the lives of up to ten girls at any one time on Candlelight Bursaries; • Through new gifts to the Scholarships & Bursaries Fund, particularly legacy gifts, to have an endowed fund worth £1.25million to support excellence.
Scholarships are an award, worth typically less than 10% of fees, with the maximum allowable being 25%. Our aim is to attract high flyers in areas of specific expertise or talent, currently Academic, Art, Music, Sport and All Rounder at 11+, 13+ and 16+. Scholarships are mainly funded by the School.

The Candlelight Ball This gala black tie event, with a hint of gold, was enjoyed on Saturday 22 June 2013 by 250 guests, including Guest of Honour The Lord Coe CH, KBE with his wife Carole. The event launched the new Candlelight Bursaries Fund and raised over £30,000 on the night and approaching £50,000 including supporting gifts – a fantastic success! We are deeply grateful to members of the organising committee, to those who gave wonderful prizes for the auction and the raffle, to the many sponsors from the local business community and to those individuals who carried the night including parent and MC Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones (The Black Farmer), former parent and auctioneer Richard Bromell (Partner and Valuer, Charterhouse Auctioneers), parent Bernard Horn (Chairman of the Organising Committee), Jennifer Underhill (florist), Sherborne Girls Jazz Band, Sherborne School Swing Band, staff waitresses, Candlelight Bar staff, Lower Six hostesses, Head Girls Molly Mackean and Pip Smith who interviewed ‘Seb’, and of course Lord Coe and the Lane family whose family connection enabled his presence.

The Annual Fund
2012/13
Each year the Annual Fund invites support of Development funds and special projects. All of the following has been made possible over the last year and going forwards, thanks to single and regular gifts both large and small. Changing Lives and Building Excellence
observatory room
Along with the support being provided to a girl on a 100% bursary, by the Candlelight Bursaries Fund (with fees cofunded by the School and Kids Company), the accumulation of gifts to the Scholarships & Bursaries Fund has meant that a talented musician has been able to join us in the Sixth Form. We are delighted to support her and look forward to her working alongside our inspirational music department. The outcome will undoubtedly enhance our community.
To enable more girls, staff and Friends to view the night skies through the School’s telescope, a regular gift to Where the School Needs it Most from Dione Ellison (Lady Shaw) K’54 is being used to refurbish the old workshop at the top of the Beddington Building to provide a comfortable ‘waiting room’ area for the School Observatory. The space will be made warm and inviting with seating, so that girls can carry out IT based activities such as online astronomy or research. Lady Shaw is the daughter of Mervyn Ellison (1909 – 1963), a professional astronomer who specialised in solar observational research and who was senior Science Master for over ten years from 1932 at Sherborne School where he had an observatory in the Headmaster’s garden!
Digital Scoreboard Thanks to the generosity of current parents David and Sarah Kerr, the School’s astroturf now boasts a smart digiscore FT2 scoreboard, with a minutes and seconds clock, that shows team names and scores.
arts fund Gifts to this fund will enable the purchase and framing of one or two of the best pieces of art produced by the girls last year.
sceince wildlife garden Sixth Form and Careers Centre On Friday 18 January 2013, a reception was held to open this popular new facility and to thank those whose help made it possible. Donors, who together contributed £40,000 towards the fit-out, enjoyed a champagne reception in the new centre after listening to a talk by entrepreneur and journalist Rachel Bridge to Sixth Formers – part of the School’s Inspirational Speakers Programme. Rachel digitally uncorked a bottle of champagne as a high-tech official opening!
Inspirational speaker The Annual Fund has recently funded a thought-provoking talk to girls by Germaine Greer, titled ‘The Disappearing Woman’.
The Where the School Needs it Most Fund is enabling the development of the garden behind the Science Centre for Biology and Environmental Systems students. A range of new species including yarrow and daisy will be planted to maintain the garden’s attractiveness but enhance learning. Additional shrubbery planted behind the rockery for cover and protection of animals, a log pile to provide a habitat for insects and a sloped pond will complete the small development. The pond will allow for pond dipping, the cultivation of pond weed, the study of pond ecosystems and food webs and provide a source of samples for the study of microscopic pond life. Planning and creating the area will serve as a community project for girls doing Duke of Edinburgh awards.
laser cutter The Where the School Needs it Most Fund will provide a laser cutter for DT. This very versatile machine can be used to cut and engrave a variety of materials, (wood, plastic, glass, card and fabrics), allowing students to use CAD / CAM to provide precision outputs to a commercial standard. This will enhance the experience of design and manufacturing within the curriculum, satisfy the requirements of the examination boards and contribute to the environment in which girls can flourish and develop. Specifically within the DT department, it will be used for project work including examination coursework and also manufacturing plywood, acrylic, glass, card and textile products for all year groups.
