Photoworks is a unique learning center providing a personalized atmosphere for students to develop their visual photography talents. Small classes in both digital and film mediums and professional faculty lead each student through the technical and aesthetic approaches to photography.

PHOTOWORKS STUDIO

Photoworks Studio is located in the Arcade building on the frst foor. The studio is equipped for analog and digital photography. The studio provides b/w flm development and printing with an enlarger for each student, two flm developing rooms and a mat cutting area. The digital studio is equipped with six computers, scanners and two Epson printers. Laptops are encouraged for the digital student. A comprehensive photography library is available to examine the masters of photography. PHOTOGRAPHY GALLERY

The gallery space provides an opportunity for emerging and professional photographers to exhibit their work. Exhibitions highlight both professional and student work. Exhibit announcements with details can be found on Photoworks website. All Photoworks exhibits begin with an opening night conversation led by the juror, the exhibiting photographer, or gallery director. Check the website for additional information.

PROFESSIONAL PHOTO SERVICES

Photoworks faculty will provide professional services upon request such as one-on-one tutorials, mentorship meetings, art portfolio reviews for adults and high school students preparing portfolios for college applications. Contact Photoworks at info@ glenechophotoworks.org for details.

DARKROOM

Our darkroom and computer lab are open for public use on Sundays from 1-5 pm. The darkroom and digital labs are stafed by an experienced photographer, and an introduction to the facility and procedures will be provided for new attendees. Learn more at: glenechophotoworks.org/labs.

INTERNSHIP

Photoworks ofers volunteer opportunities to high school students and adults such as internship and docent opportunities, and other volunteer opportunities. Learn more at: glenechophotoworks.org/volunteer.

COFFEE & CRITIQUE

Join with photographers from the metropolitan area for a 2-hour jam session led by a faculty member to view and discuss your photos over cofee and bagels. This is a “Prints “ONLY” photo session led by Karen Keating. The sessions are monthly except August. No pre-registration is required. Suggested donation $10.

This group provides a community setting for practicing your skills in handmade photo processes including platinum, cyanotype, gum bichromate, etc. The Handmade Photo Group meets on Mondays at Photoworks, for printing, sharing technique, and critique. Members provide all materials. Minimum age 18.

Basic: Digital Camera Controls | $350

This class is for anyone who has been using a digital camera in auto mode and is ready to learn more about controlling exposure compensation, shutter speed, aperture, white balance, and ISO. Students will share photos online in a private group, and receive feedback. Notes, readings, and examples will be provided. Minimum age 18.

This is for advanced photographers who want a self-guided experience within the darkroom, rubbing shoulders with others at the same level. Photographers will have unlimited access to the Photoworks darkroom on Tuesday nights from 5:309:30pm. Minimum age 18.

Intermediate: Developing Your Photographic Style | $400

Photographic style class begins with a concentration on Master Fine Art photographers. A list of masters will be discussed and each student will choose a master photographer, standing in his/her footsteps emulating style, content, and quality of light. Students will present a fnal set of images to peers and faculty. Minimum age 18.

Basic: Introduction to Black and White Developing and Printing | $400

Learn the fundamentals of Black and White flm photography. Upon completion, students should feel comfortable with loading, exposing, developing and printing 35mm black-and-white flm. This is a hands-on, feld-and-darkroom class. All you need is a camera, flm, and photographic paper to join this magical journey. Minimum age 16.

Learn to create botanical prints using cyanotype, the oldest photographic printing method. You will be guided step-bystep through the process, focusing on composition. In the second session, you’ll use digital negatives to print images, blending traditional and modern techniques for unique, beautiful results. $10 Lab fee payable to instructor on frst class session. Basic: Learn Lightroom and Photoshop From a Master Printer | $350

Elective: Creating Your Photographic Style Workshop | $125

Elective: Travel Preparation for Digital Photographers Workshop | $95

You’ll learn the best practices for traveling with your digital camera–how to protect your images, your equipment and your sanity! Basic: Get Started With Adobe Lightroom Classic $350

Get a solid foundation in Adobe Lightroom Classic, the most powerful digital photography software. You will learn extremely powerful editing techniques that will make your photos shine, organization methods and best practices that make it easy to work with your photos plus setup, importing, exporting and searching. Intermediate: Introduction to Salted Paper Printing $400

Learn the basics of salted paper printing, a historic process invented in 1839, that uses a salt solution and silver nitrate painted onto paper and exposed with UV light. Students will send photos to the instructors to have digital negatives made before the frst class. $40 materials fee paid to instructors at frst session. Minimum age 18.

Students will learn the basics of color flm developing, including helpful techniques. This is a hands-on class where students can develop their own roll of color flm. Students must supply an exposed roll of color flm, or they can observe and take notes. No previous darkroom experience is necessary. Lab fee of $5 payable to instructor on frst day of class. Minimum age 14.

Elective: The Magic of iPhone Photography | $275

This class will teach you the amazing capabilities of the camera you always have with you–your iPhone. While you can take the most simple photos with this iPhone/Camera, this class will show and teach you the far more sophisticated features that can take your photos from ordinary to extraordinary! Learn the creative secrets of studio photography with lighting master Frank Van Riper in a simpatico, no-pressure environment. Frank will supply all lighting gear. We will cover table-top, still life, portraiture, product/artwork photography and more. Minimum age 18.

Students will learn to create tintypes (positives on aluminum), ambrotypes (positives on glass), and glass negatives using chemistry and an outdoor darkroom. Students make large format images outside and learn darkroom technique one-onone with the teacher. No prior experience required. All materials and equipment provided. Minimum age 18.

Photobooks are an excellent way to showcase your photography project. They are portable, intimate, and do not require any wall space. They combine the craft, tactility and personalization of bookmaking with the artistry and elegance of your photographs printed exactly as you want. Tuition includes materials fees. Minimum age 18.

Efectively conceiving, shooting, processing and even printing B&W digital photographs is totally diferent from color. We have to learn to “see” diferently because B&W is not reality. This class will help you develop the skills to help you see, think and edit in B&W so that you can produce stunning and dramatic classic B&W photographs. Minimum age 18.

Lighting guru Frank Van Riper will help artists photograph artwork in diferent settings and with easy-to-use lighting to show it of at its best: for exhibitions, catalogs or grant applications. This is something every artist should know, and Frank will demystify it all in a simpatico setting. Instructor supplies all the lighting. Knowledge of basic camera settings required. Minimum age 18.

Prowl Glen Echo Park’s wonderful, neon-lit shadows with lighting guru Frank Van Riper. You will ‘interpret’ the Park’s stunning Art Deco forms and buildings through a number of diferent, easy-to-learn techniques, including time exposure, drag-fash and fash while zooming. The park will come alive as you never have seen it–and all will be done in-camera. Minimum age 18.

Already comfortable using Lightroom Classic (LRC) but would like to take your evaluation and advanced editing skills to a higher level, this workshop is for you! We will go beyond LRC classes you have taken. The case study method we will use is a unique approach to learning LRC advanced editing tools. LRC subscription required. Minimum age 18.

Explore the bold beauty of the cyanotype process on a grand scale. In this four-week evening course, students will create expressive large-format blueprints up to 20x30 inches—and beyond. Learn to create richly layered, hand-coated photographic prints using the tricolor gum bichromate process. Explore how to prepare paper, mix and apply emulsions, make and use digital CMY separation negatives, and expose and develop multi-layered prints. Get ready for a fun and impactful educational experience from behind the camera to in front of the computer! Using an iPhone, point and shoot, or DSLR, students will learn to create stunning digital photography and enhanced imagery in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. First learn the fundamentals of the medium, such as composition, exposure, light & shadow, and depth of feld, then transition to developing their software and editing skills. By the end of the course, students will have tangible printed evidence of their newly honed talent. Bring your camera. Other materials included.

Film Photography and Bookmaking for Teens Camp (Ages 13-17) | $475

An immersive experience in both traditional darkroom photography and mixed media bookmaking. Students will gain technical skills in photography and darkroom processes while exploring the creative possibilities of mixed media and bookmaking. By the end of the camp, students will have completed their own personalized artist book, blending photography, mixed media, and storytelling.

Film and Darkroom for Teens Camp (Ages 13-17) | $475

Experience and learn the entire traditional Black & White photography process, from shooting flm and developing it to making prints in the darkroom. Students will learn to develop flm, create prints in the darkroom, and present their work gallery style. This course teaches technical skill-building and creative exploration, making it ideal for beginners interested in traditional photography techniques.

Alternate registration methods

Registration forms may be submitted by mail (mail to: GEPPAC, attn. Registrar, 7300 MacArthur Blvd., Glen Echo, MD 20812). Registrations may also be completed over the phone by calling 301.634.2255. Payment is due in full at the time of registration.

Registration for Social Dance Classes

Students may register for social dance classes at the door on the first night of the series, although pre-registration is still recommended. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start of class to register at the door. NOTE: Registration for some dance workshops will take place ONLY at the door. Such instances are noted in the description of the class online and in the catalog.

Office Hours/Location

The Glen Echo Park Partnership office is located on the second floor of the North Arcade Building. Office hours are Monday through Saturday 10am to 6pm.

Class Registration Fee

A nonrefundable $15 Registration Fee per quarter applies to each registration (per separate registration form or per online registration session); an individual student may sign up for an unlimited number of classes within a quarter and be subject to a single fee. This fee ensures the viability of Glen Echo Park educational programs by contributing to the administrative costs associated with managing over one thousand courses each year. Registration fees are nonrefundable except when a class is cancelled by Glen Echo Park.

Refund Policy

If you wish to withdraw from a class or workshop, you must submit your request in writing. Email notification to registrar@glenechopark.org will ensure the most prompt response to your request. Alternative methods for submitting refund requests are available upon request. All refund requests, regardless of submission method, remain subject to the same eligibility criteria and timelines. When withdrawing from a course, include the student’s name, telephone number, course title and start date, and reason for withdrawal. Please note that registration fees are nonrefundable except when a course is cancelled by Glen Echo Park.

Written notification of withdrawal must be received by the following deadlines:

• 8 days or more prior to class or workshop: full tuition refunded minus a $20 cancellation fee.

• 7 days prior to a class and up to 24 hours after the first class: 50% tuition refunded, minus $20 cancellation fee.

• 7 days prior to a workshop: sorry, no refund.

• 24 hours after first class or later: sorry, no refund.

• Registration fees & camp deposits are nonrefundable. Camp fees are noted in course descriptions.

Transfer Policy

Course tuition and registration fees are nontransferable. If you wish to move to another class, you must register for the new class separately and request a refund for the original class. See above for refund policies.

Class Cancellations

The Partnership reserves the right to cancel classes that do not meet minimum enrollment. Enrolled students will be notified in advance of class cancellations.

Students enrolling in classes and programs through the Glen Echo Park Partnership (the Partnership) accept these Registration and Class Policies as part of the terms and conditions of their registration.

Registration Fee: A non-refundable Registration Fee of $15 per quarter applies to each separate registration (per registration form or per online registration session); individual students may sign up for an unlimited number of classes within a single registration.

Class Cancellations: The Partnership reserves the right to cancel classes that do not meet a minimum enrollment at the discretion of the Partnership. Enrolled students will be notified in advance of class cancellations. Class tuition is refunded when a class is cancelled by the Partnership.

Refund Policy: To cancel your registration, notify the Registrar in writing at registrar@glenechopark.org. Refunds are issued according to the following schedule:

• Withdrawal 8 days or more prior to class or workshop: full tuition refunded minus a $20 cancellation fee.

Class Policies: The Partnership and its partners offer non-accredited classes and workshops to the public. Because group cooperation is essential for a successful learning environment, the Partnership reserves the right to remove a student from a class or workshop if an instructor believes, in their sole discretion, that a student’s behavior disrupts the learning environment. Students with special needs, or their parents or guardians, should contact the instructor prior to registration to discuss any accommodations that might be needed for successful participation in a group class. The Partnership reserves the right to substitute an appropriate instructor when necessary and to change a program location when needed. Please be mindful of class start and end times. Neither the Partnership nor the instructor are able to provide pre-or post class care, unless part of a scheduled program.

Likeness Release: The Partnership and instructors reserve the right to make recordings (by use of any media) of a student’s work, voice, actions and/or likeness (collectively “Likeness”) and to use such recordings in promotional, marketing, or other printed or electronic media communication. In consideration of participating in the class(es), the undersigned, on behalf of themselves or their child under the age of 18, hereby consents to the making of such recordings and releases the Partnership and its instructors from any and all liability arising out of any recording, use, or distribution of the student’s Likeness.

Release From Liability: I wish to register to participate in one or more classes offered by Glen Echo Park or to register my child who is under the age of 18. I understand that some of the activities involve risks including, but not limited to, bodily injury, death, or property damage. I also understand the importance of following all instructions, heeding all safety warnings, and not engaging in any activity I am not able to perform safely based on my physical condition or otherwise.

In consideration of participating in the class(es), the undersigned, on behalf of themselves or their child under the age of 18, agrees not to make any claim against, and to release from any liability, the Glen Echo Park Partnership for Arts and Culture, the National Park Service, the United States Government, Montgomery County, Maryland, the class instructors, and their respective officers, directors, shareholders, employees, and agents (the ”Released Parties”) arising out of participation in class activities, whether caused by the instructor’s negligence or otherwise, and whether for bodily injury, death, property damage, or loss of any kind or nature, including, without limitation, claims concerning the right of privacy and/or publicity arising from the recording, use or distribution of the student’s Likeness.

Directions to the Park

BY CAR: When traveling via car, please use this GPS address for the main parking lot: 5801 Oxford Road, Glen Echo, MD

From the Capital Beltway (Interstate 495), take exit 40 on the outer loop or exit 41 east on the inner loop. Take Clara Barton/Cabin John Parkway to the MacArthur Blvd/Glen Echo exit. Make a left onto MacArthur Blvd. Cross Goldsboro Road and then make a left onto Oxford Road where you will see our public parking lot.

From downtown Washington, take Massachusetts Avenue northwest, to its end at Goldsboro Road, turn left, and continue to MacArthur Blvd. Turn right on MacArthur Blvd and take an immediate left onto Oxford Road where you will see our public parking lot.

For Drop Off/Pick Up and Ridesharing Apps, you can use the street address of 7300 MacArthur Blvd, Glen Echo, MD 20812 and meet your ride in front of the large neon sign by the entrance that is visible from MacArthur Blvd.

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Take Montgomery County Ride-On bus #29, operating daily from Friendship Heights and Bethesda metro stations on the Red Line. For information on rates and schedules, follow this link to Route 29 information on www.montgomerycountymd.gov.

Free Parking

Free parking for Glen Echo Park is in a public parking lot located just of MacArthur Blvd on Oxford Road, across from the Glen Echo Shopping Center. From the parking lot, walk along the path across the Minnehaha Creek bridge and into the Park. Please do not park in “permit only” areas or the town streets near the Irish Inn.

Accessible parking can be found in two locations:

Permit Parking Lot at 7300 MacArthur Blvd, Glen Echo, MD 20812. Drive through the permit parking lot to reach the accessible spaces, which are located near the iconic Glen Echo Park neon sign. A parking permit is not required to use the accessible parking spaces. This location is the closest to Park facilities.

Main Parking Lot at 5801 Oxford Road, Glen Echo, MD 20812. In this large parking lot, the accessible spaces are located close the entrance to the Park.

• Handicapped accessible restrooms are located in the Arcade Building, the Spanish Ballroom and the brick building located next to the Carousel.
