For a number of years, the Town of Athol, a New England mill town, was seeking to improve their three aging elementary schools. After a thorough study of multiple options, the preferred option consolidated all district elementary students into a single new school serving 615 students in grades Pre-K thru 4.
Building a new school produced a unique opportunity to realize the potential public schools have in providing enrichment programs that benefit, students, families and the greater community as a whole by enabling community access to shared amenities.
Looking back at the model of “neighborhood” schools which were an essential part of every New England mill town, there was a sense of comfort and community in the smaller learning environments they offered. Critical to the success of this project was maintaining that sense by finding a cost effective fit for students, families and administrators, while creating a refreshing learning environment appropriate for fostering student and community engagement in learning.
The exterior design is meant to celebrate the Town of Athol’s renewed commitment to education by using architectural iconography that reflects the stature of public schools as important civic institutions.
The interior was designed with flexibility in mind, with spatial relationships and technology centered on 21st century learning. Academic spaces of various sizes are adaptable to a range of educational uses. The structural grid of the school enables an easy modifications of spaces to meet possible changing needs in the future. From a technology perspective, wireless communication is provided thought the building and computer access is hardwired where appropriate.
This new school affords the elementary aged children of Athol a facility that rivals surrounding districts and provides abundant natural lighting, better air circulation in a high efficiency building, all of which are conducive to improved learning.

DUXBURY CO-LOCATED MIDDLE HIGH SCHOOL, DUXBURY.MA.

The new Middle/ High School is composed of four distinct parts: Middle School Wing, High School Wing, Community Wing and the Concourse, which provides the armature upon which all other parts are arranged. Students and staff are encouraged to collaborate in open seating areas along the Concourse, while re-fueling on foods prepared by culinary arts students in adjacent labs.
The Concourse runs parallel to the local barrier beach, which is a strong element of the town’s identity. Celebrating it in an artistic and informative interpretation in the form of a map respecting its natural orientation through a custom terrazzo floor was a unique opportunity. On the Community Wing side of the Concourse, deep greens in the floor pattern represent the shallower waters of the “bay area” as well as Duxbury’s culture, history and tradition, protected by a safe harbor. On the Middle School Wing and High School Wing side of the Concourse, dark blues in the floor pattern represent the deep waters of the “ocean area” as well as exploration, adventure and the unknown.

Lincoln campus Center at Umass Amherst. Boston MA. The approach to the revitalization of the Lincoln Campus Center Dining services renovation will be to brighten the dining room by flooding it with natural light from above. We’ve done this by punching 5 large skylights through the plinth above. Several of the skylights have what are essentially transparent roofs to outdoor dining pavilions. Each of the pavilions has its own garden planter where the plantings can change with the seasons reflecting the Metawampe lawn outside. The exterior wall (exterior lawn stairs) would be covered in locations with acrylic wall panels that resembles the trunks of trees in a forest or possible a water feature that will help to dampen some of the ambient sound within the room. The energy of the concourse gallery is drawn into the new dining through the use of the same wood ceiling material maintaining a sense of openness and connection. He server flows freely through the field of columns creating distinct areas for each of the culinary venues while providing patrons with clear visual cues of their dining choices.
