In America, 49.1 million people face food insecurity. That’s why Gleaner Life Insurance Society sponsored Gleaner Day™ at The Henry Ford on Oct. 3 to benefit Gleaners Community Food Bank. By purchasing an admission ticket to Greenfield Village and donating five canned goods, participants received a second admission ticket for free.

The Gleaner Day™ collection yielded 532 pounds of food and $913.88 in donations, but those were far from the final tallies from this annual event. Gleaner Life Insurance Society matched the donated money for a total of $1,827.76, and our generous arbors joined in on this cause, collecting 4,509 pounds of food. In all, the total number of meals provided in 2015 was 9,649 compared with 3,823 in 2014! Thanks to everyone who donated canned goods, money or attended the event.

Gleaner’s 57th Biennial Convention On Oct. 23-25, members gathered at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel in Illinois for Gleaner’s 57th Biennial Convention. In addition to conducting the business of the Society, members enjoyed watching knights compete at Medieval Times and were serenaded by Michael and Amy on dueling pianos. Incumbent Board Members Terry Garner and Mark Wills were re-elected, while Dan Sutton filled the open seat. Arbor delegates also voted to pass the proposed Constitution changes. Saturday evening, retiring Board Member David Sutton was recognized for 42 years of service. Look for more information on board members and the Constitution changes in the Winter 2016 issue of Forum Magazine. Arbors participated in a charitable giving campaign where they adopted one of eight organizations from the Schaumburg area and filled totes with needed donations. The organizations included Little City (offering comprehensive autism services and programs), Village of Schaumburg Senior Program, Village of Schaumburg Teen Center, The Buddy Foundation (nonprofit organization for abandoned and abused animals), Township of Schaumburg Food Pantry, Willow Creek Military Care Center and WINGS Program Inc. (shelter for women and children). Gleaner arbors were invited to decorate their totes. Grand Arbor (MI) took first prize and donated its $50 prize award to WINGS. The charity auction raised $4,667 for GiGi’s Playhouse Inc., a Down Syndrome Achievement Center. Here's a peek at some of the photos from this year’s convention. Florida Snowbird events Spring Training Baseball Gleaner members are invited to our Spring Training Baseball event at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland, Florida. Members and guests will watch the Detroit Tigers take on the New York Yankees on Friday, March 4, 2016, at 1:05 p.m. Tickets are available for a discounted rate of just $20, which includes a pregame lunch and a reserved ticket to the game. To reserve tickets for the Snowbird Spring Training Baseball event, members can simply contact the Fraternal Department. A registration form is also located on our website at www.gleanerlife.org.
Snowbird Picnic The annual Snowbird Picnic takes place Monday, March 7, 2016, at Columbus Hall, 4880 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, Florida. Our picnics combine food, fun and fellowship for Gleaner members and guests of all ages. At this potluck event, Gleaner provides the main dish and guests are asked to bring their own table service and a generous dish to share. The picnic begins at 1:00 p.m.
Benny’s Box Auction Benny’s Box Auction will give picnic guests a chance to take home an auction item. Instead of bidding a specific dollar amount on an item, guests can purchase tickets and enter as many of those tickets as they like in an item’s corresponding box. At the end of the auction, a ticket is drawn from each item’s box, and the item goes to the individual with the winning ticket. Reservations are not required for this event. gl eane rlife.org

Wild Card #24 — Arbor members put together 600 gift bags and sorted T-shirts to hand out to donors at the Michigan International Speedway’s 9/11 blood drive. Benevolent Fund Outreach Activity #8 — Adrian Arbor partnered with Maple City Arbor to help join in efforts for the Lenawee United Way Community Action Day by cleaning the Share the Warmth homeless shelter from top to bottom. Community Project #10, Animal Support #11, Learning As An Arbor #14 — The arbor collected food for St. Mary’s Food Pantry and accepted donations for a charity tote, which was presented at the 57th Biennial Convention.
Wild Card #24 — Arbor members volunteered at the Twisted P Rodeo, where they worked gate admission sales, helped with meals for volunteers and cowboys, and assisted with children’s games and entertainment. Members also coordinated a boot scramble race for all kids during intermission. They donated $350 toward shingles for the rodeo. Environmental Activity #4, Get Your Arbor Recognized #9, Youth Organization Activity #22 — Arbor members organized and ran a fundraiser for the science programs at Frankenmuth and Millington schools. They hosted a friendly competition between the schools to collect scrap metal. The winner was announced during the MillingtonFrankenmuth football game. Frankenmuth won the trophy for collecting 29,270 pounds to earn $800. Millington collected 13,000 pounds and earned $390.
Alma Arbor (MI) Educating Youth #12, Wild Card #24 — Arbor members decorated and filled a charity tote for the 57th Biennial Convention. Historical Site #13 — Arbor members visited the Oakfield Pioneer Heritage Museum in Greenville, Michigan. They donated $100 to help build shelves and brought food donations as part of Gleaner Day. The arbor donated more than 53 pounds of food to the Salvation Army pantry in Alma, Michigan. Learning As An Arbor #14 — Members enjoyed a tour and candy-making demonstration by the staff of Kilwins candy store. They learned how to temper chocolate and heat caramel to the correct temperature.

presentation on the hazards and dangers of tropical storms, hurricanes and resulting floods. Animal Support #11, Educating Youth #12, Youth Organization Activity #22 — Arbor members co-sponsored Carefest 2015 at Elmira’s Wildlife Sanctuary. Carefest is an annual event where members from several local churches work with young teens on a community event. The goal is to get youth and adults to work together. The project involved yard work at the sanctuary. Elmira’s volunteers provided the group with information about the history of the animals, plus facts and statistics about their natural habitats. The arbor also collected 162 pounds of food to help the needy. Patriotic Activity #3, 4-H Helping Hands #16, Wild Card #24 — Tom and Anita Bullaro of Our Lady of Guadalupe Food Pantry made a presentation on the need for food and assistance in the Sun City and Wimauma areas. A check for $200 and 750 pounds of food were donated at the meeting. Kim Willis, an arbor member and Future Farmers of America (FFA) counselor and teacher at East Bay High School, and three FFA members made a presentation.
Patriotic Activity #3, Environmental Activity #4, Learning As An Arbor #14 — Arbor members donated kitchen items, sheet sets, clothing for men and women, and more to the Haley House to support veterans. Their donations filled a truck and trailer for a total estimated value of $2,000. Eugene Henry, hazard mitigation manager for Hillsborough County, Florida, made a

Community Project #10 — Arbor members helped at the Fall Festival Truck Show, which is held annually to raise money for the JP Historical Society Museum in Paulding. Healthy Lifestyle and Safety Activity #20 — The arbor sponsored a team to walk and raise funds for the Riley Walk, an annual event in Fort Wayne, Indiana, that raises money for the Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. Elderly Support Activity #21, Youth Organization Activity #22 — Arbor members supported a local band that plays and sings gospel music for residents of Country Inn Assisted Living each month. Arbor members sang along with the band for an hour (three band members are Gleaner members) and then served refreshments and visited with the elderly residents.

Community Project #10 — Arbor members helped the staff and students with a special open house event at the newly located Tomorrow Center Community School. Chester Arbor assisted with the bake sale to raise funds for student activities. Animal Support #11, Caring Hands #17 — Arbor members listened to the Luke Triplett family share about how their helper dog, which accompanied them, has helped with their son’s health issues. A donation of $100 was presented to Luke for his dog’s care. CSR Award & Membership Pin #2, Community Project #10, Learning As An Arbor #14 — Community Service Awards were presented to Ruth Benien, Janet Bedwell, Dixie Shineberry and Aaron Evans. The arbor also teamed with the local Red Cross and the Elm Valley Fire Department to purchase smoke alarms for local homes without them. Chris Cooper from the Red Cross explained the program, and the firemen shared stories of families who have

Learning As An Arbor #14, Healthy Lifestyle and Safety Activity #20 — Arbor members, family and friends were invited to join in a family-friendly bike ride. They met at Fallen Timbers Middle School in Whitehouse, and arbor President Jerel Fish gave a safety talk to the kids and parents before they rode to City Park via the Wabash Cannonball Trail. Everyone enjoyed ice cream at General’s Ice Cream Shop, and the kids played on the playground before biking back.

Youth of all ages taught each other new steps. Caring Hands #17, Elderly Support Activity #21 — Arbor members hosted a collection for the Village of Schaumburg’s Senior Barn Program. Arbor members shopped for items from the program’s wish list. Members also donated gift certificates, facial tissue, toothpaste, toothbrushes, hairbrushes and more.

Gleoma Arbor (NE) Youth Organization Activity #22 — Arbor members presented an assembly to Fort Calhoun Elementary, where they encouraged students and teachers to make cards for soldiers. Students made the cards during class, and the arbor then mailed them through Operation Cookies for Soldiers. Historical Site #13 — The arbor visited the Florence Mill historical museum and presented a check for $100.

Shiawassee and Genesee Counties that provides meals for needy people with three feeding sites and a lunch bag distribution. The arbor paid $100 to sponsor Group Therapy Band of Flint, which provided live music with a country spirit for dancing and listening. Arbor members also donated 20 pounds of food and made a cash donation of $135 to the North End Soup Kitchen.

Hawthorne Arbor (IN) Get Your Arbor Recognized #9, Healthy Lifestyle and Safety Activity #20 — Arbor members served food to 250 runners at the Tri-Creek 5K Walk and Run. Volunteers set up tables to display Gleaner pencils, nail files and other handouts. They served 75 bags of grapes, slices of watermelon, granola bars, bananas, bagels with cream cheese, water and Gatorade. Community Project #10 — Arbor members met at the Lowell Chamber of Commerce building on Oct. 3 for its Acts of Kindness food drive. They collected 437 pounds of food, which they divided up and donated to four pantries. They also donated $70 to the Lowell Methodist household pantry.
Get Your Arbor Recognized #9, Learning As An Arbor #14, 4-H Helping Hands #16 — Arbor members cleaned a stretch of highway along M-15 to M-57. They also made a $1,000 donation to the Davison Livestock Club. Benevolent Fund Outreach Activity #8, Community Project #10, Youth Organization Activity #22 — 4-H members and their families were invited to a Strawberry Shortcake party. Arbor members provided and served dessert and refreshments. Arbor members then presented auction signs to general superintendents of the small and large animal auctions. Caring Hands #17 — Arbor members donated $500, which Gleaner matched for a total of $1,000, to the family of Dan Kidd, who was injured and passed away following a farming accident. Get Your Arbor Recognized #9 — Arbor members joined together with 4-H to cook and serve a sausage and pancake breakfast in Davison, Michigan.
Holland Arbor (OH) Patriotic Activity #3, Get Your Arbor Recognized #9 — Dawn Heisler of Heroes in Action spoke to arbor members about her organization and items they send overseas to servicemen. The arbor donated $200 toward these efforts. Peggy Holewinski of the American Red Cross spoke about upcoming events, including a veterans breakfast and CPR training. The arbor purchased three cases of Child Comfort Kits for the Red Cross’ NOW Toledo Chapter.

Bring-A-Guest Event #1, Get Your Arbor Recognized #9, Elderly Support Activity #21 — The arbor held its Senior Harvest, where members gave seniors fresh fruits and vegetables of the season. Twenty-two different products, from apples to zucchini, were distributed. Each senior was given a canvas bag, compliments of the Homer Library, which included a Gleaner arbor flyer and Lifetime Membership Application. After collecting their produce, the seniors were treated to coffee and bakery goods provided by arbor members.

Patriotic Activity #3, Elderly Support Activity #21 — Arbor members wrote thank-you cards to veterans and put together eight gift baskets for elderly veterans. Educating Youth #12, Youth Organization Activity #22, Wild Card #24 — Arbor members delivered school supplies to Calvary Schools of Holland.
Law Arbor (MI) Bring-A-Guest Event #1 — Arbor members traveled to Veterans Memorial Park in Bay City to visit the River of Time, a living history from the Indians through World War II. Wild Card #24 — The arbor met and purchased gifts for the Village of Schaumburg that were presented in a charity tote at the 57th Biennial Convention.
Legacy Arbor (MI) Patriotic Activity #3, Community Project #10, Educating Youth #12, Historical Site #13, 4-H Helping Hands #16, Caring Hands #17 — The arbor made a $1,000 Caring Hands donation to Danielle Donelson. Danielle’s infant daughter has a severe heart defect that required weeks of hospitalization and will require ongoing medical treatment. The arbor also purchased undergarments and socks for residents at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor and gave $100 to Wounded Warrior, $200 to Relay For Life, $100 to Croswell Opera House, $500 to Lenawee 4-H Extension, 10 Nickels, Dimes, and Dollars books through N ove mbe r /D e ce mbe r 2 015

monthlong food drive to support Gleaner Day. Arbor members purchased food for Fishes ‘n’ Loaves and the Salvation Army in Adrian, Michigan. The arbor also partnered with three Borchardt Brothers grocery stores in Lenawee County. Collection boxes were set up at the stores. Arbor members then collected the donated items and delivered them to two charities.

Madison Arbor (MI) Benevolent Fund Outreach Activity #8, Invite An Elected Public Official #19 — The arbor participated in the Back-toSchool Celebration Kickoff, which was held for students in grades K-5 who participate in the Madison Balanced School Year. Students received goody bags from the arbor with a Gleaner coloring book and a snack. The arbor also provided ice cream from the Spotted Cow for all attendees. Benevolent Fund Outreach Activity #8, Get Your Arbor Recognized #9, Youth Organization Activity #22 — The arbor partnered with the Madison High School Sideline Cheer Club and served ice cream from the Spotted Cow to fans at the Madison varsity football game. They also rented inflatables, and Sideline Cheer Club members volunteered to help run them. 9

Educating Youth #12 — Arbor members assembled and decorated a charity tote for the 57th Biennial Convention to benefit the teen center. Community Project #10 — The arbor, along with Adrian Arbor and Gleaner Home Office employees, partnered on United Way’s Day of Action to clean and prepare the space for the Salvation Army homeless shelter. Arbor members mopped floors, cleaned the bathrooms, assembled the sleeping beds, dusted and shampooed the furniture. The arbor also donated cleaning supplies and extra items on the shelter’s wish list. Benevolent Fund Outreach Activity #8, Get Your Arbor Recognized #9 — The arbor hosted and sponsored the Wild Swan Theater during Art-A-Licious at the Adrian Public Library. Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Wild Swan is dedicated to producing professional theater of the highest artistic quality for families and to making theater accessible to everyone through low ticket prices and innovative outreach programs. Benevolent Fund Outreach Activity #8, Get Your Arbor Recognized #9, Invite An Elected Public Official #19 — Arbor members joined VFW Post 6015 and its auxiliary and the Marion Food Pantry to host a benefit dinner, with all proceeds going to the food pantry. State Rep. Joel Johnson and his wife, Dawn, attended the dinner. Osceola County commissioners Roger Elkins and Jack Nehmer also attended. The Marion Arbor of Gleaner Life Insurance Society sign was placed in a prominent area during the event.

Mid-Michigan Arbor (MI) Patriotic Activity #3, Healthy Lifestyle and Safety Activity #20 — The arbor sponsored a 5K run/walk for veterans to benefit the Yellow Ribbon Guard in Bay City, Michigan. Fifty-one runners and walkers participated. The arbor provided medals for first- and second-place winners in all age groups, as well as cookies, water, bananas and popsicles. The McDonald’s in Essexville provided apple slices, while area Boy Scouts helped with water stations.

Educating Youth #12, Historical Site #13, Youth Organization Activity #22 — The arbor held an educational event for local Cub Scouts at Breckenridge Historical Society with five stations to teach about life in the early 20th century. Topics included stilts, the cross-cut saw, sack races, old-fashioned lawn mowers and corn shelling. Each station lasted about 10 minutes. The arbor also donated $100 to each organization.

Portage Center Arbor (OH) Learning As An Arbor #14 — Dale David of the Wood County Board of Elections made a presentation about the township and upcoming election. Bring-A-Guest Event #1, Community Project #10 — Arbor members collected more than 21 pounds of food for the Bowling Green Food Pantry. Several organizations sponsored stations for elementary students to learn about and enjoy fall activities. At one station, they read about growing and the uses of apples and corn. South Fairfield Arbor (MI-OH) Educating Youth #12 — The arbor sponsored Ag Fest for all third-grade students in Fulton County, Ohio, over the course of two days. The children visited 13 stations to learn about agriculture and the sources of many foods. Topics included grains, soils, water, bees, pork, dairy, small animals, blacksmithing, bugs and more. The goats were a crowd favorite. Eugene, a pygmy goat and the South Fairfield Arbor mascot, invited his two goat friends, Midnight and Sparky, to participate. The children learned about goats, got to pet them and sampled goat cheese. As a bonus, a Toledo television station came out and aired a segment on the news.
Stateline Arbor (MI) Youth Organization Activity #22 — The arbor worked with Meadowvale softball players to place flags on veterans’ graves at Woodlawn Cemetery. Historical Site #13 — The arbor donated paint to the Historic Wolcott House for a restoration project on a porch railing. Arbor members also toured the house, grounds and museum. Benevolent Fund Outreach Activity #8 — The arbor bought tickets to see the Upton Players production of Godspell. Arbor members worked with the music program through Toledo Area Youth Performers to get some of their participants and families to see the performance. USA Arbor (MI) Healthy Lifestyle and Safety Activity #20 — The arbor reserved a vendor location at the Sebewaing Country Market and Music Festival. They set up a pop-up and table and brought in jump rope maker Roger Acker to make jump ropes for kids. The arbor created an informational board that discussed the importance of drinking water and exercising by jumping rope. Members distributed free bottles of water, and the kids got free jump ropes. To make the jump rope, the kids were allowed to pick ropes of two colors from 16 choices, and then the ropes were strung on a ropemaking machine. The kids spun a wheel that twisted their own rope. Kids were fascinated by how the colors came together, and they were so proud that they had made the ropes themselves. The ropes are a nylon fiber and brightly colored, such as hot pink, purple, orange, lime green, etc.

Longtime Gleaner takes commemorative flight Bill Garner of South County Arbor (IN) went on an Honor Flight as a World War II veteran to visit the World War II Memorial. Bill was in the Fleet Marine Forces and bugler for the U.S. Marine Corps. A Gleaner member since 1947, Bill was the 2009 Fraternalist of the Year and is the father of Terry Garner, current Gleaner board member.
In loving memory: Richard Bennett, 1948-2015 On Saturday, Oct. 24, longtime Board Member Richard Bennett passed away. He had served on the Gleaner Life Insurance Society Board of Directors since 1993 and was a devoted contributor and supporter of the Home Office employees and agency representatives in successfully moving Gleaner ahead. He will be missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to know and work with him.
he married Jeannie Fagan in Hawaii. He was a lifetime farmer who loved the beauty of the land and the harvest. From 1971 to 1973, he also taught at Liberty Center Middle School in Liberty Center, Ohio. Richard was very active in farming and served the farming industry in various capacities. He also served 16 years, from 1993 to 2008, as a Henry County, Ohio, commissioner and was a board member of the Farm Bureau for many years.
“Richard always worked for the greater good, exercised sound judgment, and led with integrity,” says Gleaner Board Director Suann Hammersmith. “He was a kind man and good friend. Richard’s loss has left an overwhelming sadness in our hearts, and a deep void on our Board of Directors. We are wishing Jeannie many special memories and peace in the depths of the love they shared.”
He is survived by his wife, who lives in Napoleon; children Tim (Paulette) Bennett of Houston, Texas, Laura (Mike) Shultz of Napoleon, Craig (Mary) Bennett of Oxford, Ohio, and Joy Bennett of Findlay, Ohio; stepchildren Joy (Jeffrey) Peck of Adrian, Michigan, and Nikki Cervantes of Swanton, Ohio; and grandchildren Brandon, Nick, Darren, Jazz, Ty, Levi, Helena, Noah and Jose.
