so easy, anyone can do it. You don’t have to grow an avocado as a fruit tree either. They make great novelty indoor foliage plants. And growing them from seed means that they are free. First, it’s best to use the seed straight away after eating the flesh. Don’t leave it lying around for too long. A novel way to sprout the seed is by poking three toothpicks into the seed so that it can perch half immersed in a glass of water. The bottom of the seed should be in the water, with the top end sticking upwards – this is the end with the growing point which will be a small knobbly lump. Before too long, the seed will sprout a root from the bottom and a shoot from the top. You will need to change the water every couple of days so that the root has access to new oxygenated water, otherwise it will stagnate and rot away. Keep it in a warm bright location and the roots will grow drown through the water in the glass. The roots will last about eight weeks before they start to deteriorate. You can them pot them into good potting mix as an indoor plant. You can also grow an avocado in potting mix – which is the best way to do it if you want to keep it for a longer period of time. Bury the seed in a pot of good potting soil with the top third exposed. Again, make sure the flat side is to the bottom and the pointy side is to the top. To stop indoor avocado plants from dropping their leaves, give them a position where they get plenty of good light. Fertilise and water them just like you would any other indoor plant and they’ll respond well. They won’t set fruit if grown inside, but realistically you’re growing it for the foliage anyway. Caring for your indoor avocado includes support and feeding. Stake and tie the main stem to keep it straight as it grows. Also, transplant the tree as it outgrows its pot. Fertilise with water-soluble food monthly and turn the tree frequently to promote even growth. Water when the soil feels dry to the touch, but remember that avocados can easily develop root rot problems, so don’t overwater them. If you want to eventually plant your avocado outside and grow it for the fruit, it’s best not to use a seed from a Hass avocado, unless you’ve got perfect drainage and rich deep soils. It’s best to use a seed from avocados suited to our soils and climate, like Walden, Wurtz, Rincon or Pinkerton.
