Be aware of underground and overhead high voltage
With so many people working in their yard during summer, Energex is reminding everyone to be aware of underground and overhead electrical dangers in and around their property. Digging, cutting and pruning trees in the yard is commonplace for thousands of Queenslanders and according to Energex’s safety advisor Chris Rose these jobs should always be done with electrical safety in mind. “Whether digging a new garden bed, drilling a hole for a fence post or planting a new tree, we’re asking people to be aware of underground and overhead power both in the yard and on the footpath,” he said. “For those digging within their property boundary they can organise the services of a certified cable locator who can come and identify all underground services within their yard. “By doing so the homeowner can not only save a costly bill if they had accidently struck an underground service, the information could also save their life.” Mr Rose said if anyone was digging outside their fence line or footpath they could contact a free service to locate nearby cables. “Before digging on the footpath people should always contact ‘Dial before you dig’ on www.1100.com.au or call 1100,” he said. “The ‘Dial before you dig’ service can assist property owners with plans and advice of any registered underground utilities outside a property boundary.” Mr Rose also warned that electrical hazards are not just underground and people should take care and stay line aware of the powerlines above them as well . “There are very few second chances when coming into contact with any electricity, so if someone’s doing any work such as trimming trees, working on their roof or carrying tall objects around their property they must always look above for overhead wires,” he said. Keeping your rainwater tank safe Sunshine Coast residents are urged to keep their rainwater tank safe this summer with regular, sensible maintenance. While rainwater tanks generally only involve low maintenance that definitely does not mean no maintenance. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) Public Health Unit director, Dr Andrew Langley, said monitoring your rainwater tank is an important responsibility, consisting of a range of visual inspections rather than laboratory testing of rainwater quality. Maintenance of your tanks is needed to maintain good water quality and prevent mosquitoes breeding. Here are the top monitoring and maintenance activities that will help you keep your rainwater tank system safe:

You can do this by bringing the water to the boil and letting it cool before use,” he said. Rainwater may be used without further treatment for flushing toilets, the cold water laundry tap and for watering gardens and lawns as these uses generally present a low risk of disease. Cucumber
I’m not what you’d call a fan of the cucumber. In fact, it’s one of the few edible members of the plant kingdom that I have absolutely no interest in eating at all. But I know others love them, including someone who lives in the same house. So occasionally, and reluctantly, I relent and grow them in the garden. Here’s some tips if you would like to do the same. Grow them from seed. There are lots of different varieties and, in general, the commercial seedlings only offer you a couple of choices. Cucumbers are in the same family as zucchini, marrow, squash and pumpkin … and they all have the same characteristic. They only germinate if the soil temperature is over 20-odd degrees. So winter germination will generally not do so well. Sow them 1cm deep in a seed raising mix in a container that is at least 10cm deep – that gives the roots a good volume to grow into. Let the seedlings develop a couple of leaves before planting them into an organic rich soil bed. Alternatively, you can plant them in a large pot or container – but it needs to be large as their roots need space. Cucumbers are natural climbers, so give them some sort of structure to climb up. It’s much easier to find and pick the fruits later if they’re off the ground, and it keeps them away from pests (and other critters). I have had great success by growing two cucumber plants in a large pot (at least 50cm diameter) over which I’ve placed a tube of chicken wire at least 1.5m high (2m is best). Secure the tube of chicken wire otherwise it will topple over with the weight of the plants later on. I find that this method saves space and means that you can grow them wherever you have the best amount of direct sunlight. Cucumbers tend to be better self-pollinators than zucchini or pumpkin flowers, so you should get a fair fruit set without having to resort to pollinating the flowers yourself. Keep the moisture and nutrients up to them as they need constant amounts of both. As for pests, the main ones you’ll need to watch for are caterpillars and fruit fly. Use whatever method of control you’re most comfortable with … natural, chemical or exclusion. Using exclusion mesh is easier if you grow them using the chicken wire tube technique. But you can mesh bag each fruit if you wish. Make sure you don’t leave the fruits too long before picking, otherwise they’ll be giants and you’ll find the seeds developing too much inside. Smaller fruit are (apparently) better tasting anyway.
I have this eight year old tree in my backyard. This is the first year it has fruited/flowered. Could you please identify the tree? Many thanks Linda Thanks for the photo Linda. Looks to me like you have a small leaved tamarind tree (Diploglottis campbellii). It’s a native rainforest tree that is now rare in the wild due to land clearing but has been widely grown as a garden ornamental and a park and street feature tree. It grows into a small tree (about 8m) but develops a lovely spreading canopy, so is a great shade tree in the backyard. It can make an excellent tub specimen plant as well. The photo you’ve sent of the fruit is pretty typical of this species … that lovely red colour is just so striking. Another good point about it is that it’s a bush tucker tree. The large red fruits contain a tangy orange pulp. Many people have used them in various recipes including jams, jellies, sauces, fruit chutneys, spreads, coulis and to flavour drinking water. Once mature, they will bear kilos of fruit a year. They’re also very popular with native animals such as possums and fruit bats. They prefer part shade and a well-drained soil that’s rich in organic matter, so you will need to keep it well watered through the dry season and apply an organic or slow-release fertiliser in the early spring.
