Oh what a beautiful garden
After the BIG rains …
If you didn’t make it to Gardening on the Edge in 2019 you missed out on seeing the beautiful gardens of The Maleny Lake Cottages on McCarthy Road, across from Maleny Dairies. The property verges onto an expansive lake, which allows the eye to drift off from the garden vistas across the water to other gardens and properties, giving the impression of being part of an estate. Swamp cypress trees verging the lake are a particularly striking feature with their orange and yellow autumn tones. These amazing trees can grow in wet conditions … in fact that’s what they prefer and so make a great option around the edge of a waterbody. The gardens also have more traditional aspects, with lavender, roses and annual and perennial flowers adding colour. One non-traditional feature is the dwarf citrus trees grown amongst the flowers.

In flower now - Ivory curl tree
Buckinghamia celsissima Right now you’ll be noticing a small to medium sized tree bursting out with long white flower brushes – Landsborough has some great examples. This is the spectacular native ivory curl tree. A tall rainforest tree in northern Queensland, it adapts well to our climate and soils but only grows to 5-8m. Related to banksias and grevilleas, it attracts lots of bees, butterflies and nectar-feeding birds and insects. The flowers grow to about 20cm in length and can be used as cut flowers in the home. It can be pruned to form a compact shape, meaning that it’s great for small backyards. With no real pest or disease problems, it’s easy to grow and look after. Just keep those high phosphorus fertilisers away from it. Any of our wonderful local nurseries should be able to order a couple in for you.
