Have you heard of the ‘floppy sprinkler’? Most people haven’t, but it could be poised to be the next big thing in efficient irrigation and watering. The revolutionary design of the sprinkler is remarkable. It has one small moving part, so no wear and tear. It delivers water in uniform 3mm sized droplets with no misting. It covers a circle 14m across – that’s 154sq.m. It uses 40% less water than other standard sprinklers. It works in low or high pressure systems. It has an inbuilt flow controller, so it delivers exactly the same amount and rate of water no matter what. The simple design is made up of a hard outer case that houses a silicone tube. The floppy tube rises up and out the top when the tap is turned on. The floppy silicone tube then flails about in a structured pattern, creating the even droplet distribution. The watering system is really useful for larger areas of grass or large garden beds. It is particularly good for horticultural and tree crops. It can be mounted on a stand on the ground or up to any height using a riser pipe – so it can be made to mimic rainfall from above tree foliage if wanted. The word hibiscus evokes thoughts of the large bright flowers of tropical isles, but there are more than 1000 hibiscus species worldwide, including 35 species that are native to Australia. Three species have been found in Glass House Mountains National Park, and these are equally as showy and spectacular as the tropical species, though quite different in form. The most common local hibiscus is the native rosella, Hibiscus heterophyllus, which grows as a rounded shrub on the fringes of rainforest and tall forest. There is much variation in the flowers of this species, with local shrubs having white and pink flowers (pictured). Other local species are H divaricatus and H splendens (splendid hibiscus). In the garden, native hibiscus shrubs can be used for hedging or as a screen, as a feature, in a mixed planting or even as a container plant. They are wonderful bird and insect attractors, as their flowers produce copious amounts of nectar, and the seed capsules provide a feast for seed-eaters, such as rainbow lorikeets. The prolonged flowering from spring to summer make these an important part of the natural ecosystem, encouraging natural pest control as the insects use the plant as a food source and are themselves controlled by a wide range of predators. Many hibiscus species are known bush foods, with edible flowers, leaves and even roots. The petals make an attractive garnish for salads and can be preserved as a chutney or jam, made into a syrup, or used to make teas.

In the Garden Jobs for the yard in December The long spells of dry weather can make your soils water repellent. Use soil wetting granules to make the most of any storm rainfall. The wet humid weather is heaven for vegetable caterpillars and grasshoppers. They can strip leafy green veges overnight. Hand remove or spray with a natural spray (such as Dipel) every couple of days. Remember that water washes off any sprays, so repeat after rain or overhead irrigation. Tunnelling ants are active and can cause headaches in pot plants. Drown them by watering with soapy water, maybe with a few drops of a garden insecticide. Paw paw trees that have grown too tall cut be cut back now. Cut the stem to 1m off the ground and cover the cut top with a large can.
Prune back your grevilleas by a third and feed with a low phosphorus fertiliser. This simulates being burnt back in a bushfire and stimulates them to grow more branches – more branches means more flowers. Don’t forget to slip-slop-slap when you go out in the garden, even if it is for a short period. Try to do most of the work in the mornings or the afternoons, so that you miss the heat of the day. Take a water bottle with you too. Keeping well hydrated is just as important. Tidy up the garden for Santa – he doesn’t think too highly of a messy garden.
