Local wedding day romantic, magic and full of love By Sonia Clark At GC&M News we always love a local wedding, so when we heard that Glass House Mountains couple Den and Rebekah (Bec) Bolton had recently celebrated their special day at Beerwah Hideaway, we thought it would make a lovely story for our readers. We caught up with Bec to find out a little more about their dream day. Q: How long had you been planning your wedding? Den originally proposed to me about five years ago, and at the time we intended on getting married 12 months from our engagement, but I ended up having another baby (Kamryn, now three years old), we bought a block of land to build our first home on … so our wedding got put on hold until the right time came along. Twelve months before our wedding in September we decided that it was now or never so we knuckled down and started really planning it.
Q: Tell us a about the theme of the wedding? I am a hopeless romantic so I just wanted everything to be as romantic as can be. We had a romantic, boho rustic theme going on and chose a colour palette of soft pinks, deep reds, burgundy and whites. Q: How many guests attended and who was in your wedding party? We had 74 mainly family and very close friends. We just wanted to have the people at our wedding who were closest to us, the ones we see on a regular basis and the ones who we knew would be in our lives forever - and the people we knew would stick around to enjoy our wedding day and reception with us until the end of the night. Den's brother Rob was the best man and my sisters Tahliah and Missy were my bridesmaids. My brother Jed walked me down the aisle and gave me away, and our son Quinny was the page boy and ring bearer. Our daughters Claire and Kamryn were the flower girls. Q: The flowers looked gorgeous. Who did them? Beerwah Flowers and Gifts. Sue is amazing and she did the best job - just so beautiful! She did the table flowers, bouquets, button holes and hair flowers with a mixture of roses and chrysanthemums in soft pinks, deep reds, burgundy and white to match our romantic colour scheme. Q: What were some of the highlights of the day? Our ceremony was our highlight! We chose to do a handfasting/tie-the-knot ceremony as well as the traditional ring ceremony, which was beautiful because it gave us a chance to include our three kids.

Den and I held hands while the kids, Rob (best man) and Tahliah (my sister/matron of honour) draped the ribbons one by one over our hands and Rob tied the knot for us while Louise Forster-Ferrari, our celebrant, did a reading for us. Louise also acknowledged my mum who passed away when I was 22. Den and I also wrote our own vows. (As a muso, Den is really gifted at writing, so his vows were very special. He has a beautiful heart). Den chose ‘Stone Cold’ by Jimmy Barnes for our first dance, which was super romantic and so Aussie! Q: In your own words how would you describe your wedding day? We adored our wedding day. It was romantic, magic and full of love, laughter, smiles and dancing. Our wedding day was everything we dreamed of thanks so much to each other, our family, our friends and the wonderful people involved in the ceremony.

Trending tips for hinterland brides
With decades of unique and bespoke headpiece design expertise, Brenda Treasure from LilyM Millinery Supplies and Unique Headpieces knows a thing or two about creating exquisite headpieces – especially for special occasions. GC&M News chatted with Brenda to find out more about her trending tips for bridal headpieces. Brenda said a trend she is seeing more, especially around the hinterland, is a country bride look that combines a trilby type headpiece worn to the back of the head and decorated with fresh flowers. “It’s lovely to see this look that is well suited to our rural outlook. The brides look absolutely gorgeous and I’m seeing a lot of earthy tones and colours used in the hats such as caramels and bone, adorned with fresh flowers,” Brenda said. Another trending tip for 2019 is the resurgence of closely fitted headpieces using lace detail to match the dress. Brenda said she was creating lace headpieces pieces that used a very fine wire frame and could be embellished with crystals and beading. Her final tip is the bridal vine that weaves and braids the hair. Brenda said this gorgeously whimsical look was becoming very popular as it incorporates crystals and beads to create a vine that looks simple yet stunning. A special occasion befits a specially created headpiece or hat, and Brenda has a wealth of ideas and designs to help create a beautifully bespoke piece that will enhance any outfit for any members of the bridal party. Surprise! It’s a wedding
By Sonia Clark When guests rocked up to Kylie Cherry’s 40th birthday celebrations in December last year, they were pleasantly surprised to discover that Kylie and her long-time beau Tony Booth would also be getting married on the day. Kylie said she and Tony decided to have a surprise wedding as they both just wanted something small and intimate that suited them. People thought they were attending ‘Kylie’s Kiwi All Blacks’ themed party, so most people wore black, although a couple of friends wore Footrot Flats inspired outfits, which proved entertaining once they realised it was actually a wedding. “We didn’t want all the drama and expense that goes with planning a big wedding and we just wanted to share our special day with the people that meant the most to us,” Kylie said. Tony and Kylie first met at the local Glasshouse Mountains Tavern when Kylie (who was functions manager at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club at the time) had just finished organising an event. Friends convinced her to stay for a quick drink and she met Tony who was there for his cousin’s 30th birthday. As they say, the rest is history and the two
have been a couple for more than seven years. Upon arrival at Kylie’s birthday party, a few guests had an idea that it may be more of an occasion when they saw Kylie and Tony were a little over dressed for a 40th birthday. With happy smiles all round, many of the friends remarked that it was “about time”, though some joked that they were not really dressed for a wedding. Kylie said only a handful of people knew about the surprise, including local celebrant Adrienne Heppel (who wore a traditional Maori cloak to acknowledge Kylie’s New Zealand heritage), Kylie’s family from New Zealand and both the witnesses, who also travelled from afar. “Our younger boys (Levi and Bray) had no idea, as we knew they wouldn’t be able to keep it a secret, but our older children were aware just a few months prior,” Kylie said. "I also had to tell my co-worker Kylee, as most of my planning was done from my business, Beerwah Stationery, so she definitely needed to be in on the secret.” The wedding was fairly straight forward to plan. The couple had the celebrant and caterers booked well in advance and then just organised everything else themselves for their backyard nuptials. They made their own bar and arbour structures, and used flowers from their garden to decorate the arbour. Kylie’s mum and a family friend set up the grazing table, and family members who were staying with
the couple in the week leading up to the wedding pitched in and helped set up frames for tarps, fairy lights and all the little last-minute touches. “Having the wedding at home made it really easy to plan and set up. The best part of the event though was being surrounded by my family, as it was the first time in over 20 years that my siblings and I had all been together,” Kylie said. On the day, most guests had arrived by 3pm with the surprise ceremony booked for 3.30pm. Marriage celebrant Adrienne said it was the most top secret wedding she had ever participated in, which she clearly enjoyed, particularly getting Tony and the guests to do the haka as Kylie arrived. “The haka was to give spirit and strength from the males and heart and love from the females,” Adrienne said. The weather was definitely not on the couple’s side on the day, as it absolutely poured rain. They even had to stop the ceremony to move it under cover, but it couldn’t dampen anyone’s spirits and, in Adrienne’s words, “it was like the ancestors were raining down tears of joy”.

The local Jewellers Bench Nestled within one of the most iconic buildings in Landsborough is the gorgeously creative wonderland of The Jewellers Bench. Beautifully showcased within the walls of The Old Bank in Landsborough is the hinterland showroom and workshop of mother and son jewellers, Shari and Donald Wright. Shari is an intensely creative jeweller with decades of experience in the industry. Her son Donald is also a fully qualified jeweller and goldsmith proving that artistic talent does run in families. Both Shari and Donald bring a range of skills to their design and manufacturing work, and can custom make beautifully individualised items from contemporary design to more classical pieces. Shari explains that a unique aspect of her business is that when you have something made at The Jewellers Bench you deal directly with the person creating the piece. “By dealing directly with us, our clients are sure to get exactly what they want. Commission pieces and personalised engagement and wedding rings are our specialties, and we are always happy to provide suggestions or creative guidance if needed.” Shari relocated to the hinterland to be closer to her Dad, Donald Powell, who is a renowned sculptor and carving artist. Shari shares his love of hand carving and some of his work is also featured at The Jewellers Bench. The move also allowed Donald to learn more about the craft from his grandfather. While many of the jewellery pieces on display have an element of fantasy or whimsy to them, there are also a number of more understated and very affordable pieces using natural materials such as wood, which are perfect for the more relaxed feel of the Sunshine Coast. Hand crafted ‘statement rings’ are also proving very popular as clients look to invest in one-off pieces that capture the individuality of the person wearing them, as well as the repurpose and redesign of old jewellery into something that can become a gorgeous keepsake.
With an onsite workshop, the team also specialise in repairs and resizing. No job is too small and Shari is keen to provide the local community with all the convenient services a local jeweller can provide. “Items don’t need to be sent away for repair – ring resizing, restringing and jewellery repairs are often so much more reasonably priced than people may think. Clients can also bring in old gold, broken pieces of sentimental jewellery or old family jewellery and have it revived into a piece to be worn and treasured.
