Septuagenarian conquers 100km cycle challenge
Seventy-six-year-old Beerwah man, Roger Bonhomme, was determined to not only tick last month’s 100km Brisbane to Gold Coast (B2GC) Cycle Challenge off his bucket list, but to complete it in under six hours. A regular bike rider until his mid-teens, Rogers’s passion for cycling was rekindled last year when given one of his son’s old mountain bikes for Christmas. He built up distances on the bike and decided to take on the fast, flat and furious ride that is the B2GC, with some key goals in mind. “My overall plan was to finish the ride, to do it non-stop and to complete the course in less than six hours,” he said. “I have averaged about 12 to 14 km per hour on rough, gravel cycle trails so far, so I felt that 16 km per hour should be achievable on bitumen. “I just about succeeded – my only stop was for a puncture coming into Hope Island - and at the finish line, my bike GPS showed I had taken six hours and one minute,” he said. Roger admitted it was not an easy feat given the strong wind and rain on the day (Sunday, October 14). “The event for a 76-year-old was tough – mentally and physically – because we had continuous drizzle, sudden heavy showers and a strong head wind,” Roger said. “At times I just couldn’t hold my bike straight –

so it was helpful that I had an ‘L’ plate stapled to my backpack, with the words ‘Mr Wobbly’ written on it,” he said. Bicycle Queensland CEO Anne Savage said Roger embodied the widespread appeal of bike riding, and encouraged people of all ages and abilities to get involved in cycling. “Roger is living proof that you’re never too old to get back on a bike and relive your childhood,” she said. “He’s an inspiration to so many others, demonstrating that age is no barrier to health and happiness. It is a great pathway to connecting with others and strengthening wellbeing.” Almost 3,000 riders took over a traffic-free South East Busway for the B2GC, pedalling 100km to the Gold Coast. There were a range of options available for riders of all ages and abilities, including a 60km ride starting at Logan, with all roads leading to live music and great food at the Gold Coast finish line. This year, the B2GC Cycle Challenge teamed up with five charity partners to raise vital funds for physical and mental illness. The Heart Foundation, Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, Breast Cancer Network Australia, Smiling for Smiddy and beyondblue were all official beneficiaries of the popular annual event.

Long road to retirement
Today plenty of people are working way past the traditional retirement age of 65 years and for one Beerwah local this was the age he started in his final career as a courtesy bus driver. John Burrows took on the part-time job with Beerwah RSL 11 years ago. When the club relocated to the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club, now Club Glass House, he continued in the role. Over the years, John reckons he had talked about retiring at age 60, then 65, 70 and 75. Finally at age 76 he is calling it quits at the end of the year. Club Glass House manager Sharon Bochow said that what had been great about employing someone from John’s generation is their strong work ethic and the pride they take in how they do their work. “As a former mechanic, John has always gone the extra mile. For John the job hasn’t just been about driving the bus, but also about being responsible for keeping it in pristine condition and top working order,” she said. Club regulars will have also seen John around the club collecting empty glasses, serving meals to tables and, apparently, he is also a pretty good at washing up. Co-worker Sonya Bowen reckons that John loves a chat and has plenty of stories to share and that his passengers enjoy John’s friendliness as well as his “very cheery” shirts. While John works five shifts and around 20 hours a week, he clearly enjoys the job and loves being a part of the Club Glass House team, which he describes as the most harmonious workplace he has ever been a part of. While John expects he will miss the social side of the job, he is happy with his decision and is looking forward to having more time to pursue his hobbies and finish some of his projects at home. John is a big believer that keeping your mind active is what keeps you young, but he reckons he will also find the time to come to the club and enjoy being a patron.

Grandparents go back to school Contributed by Debbie Roberts Beerburrum State School students invited their grandparents and stand-in grandparents to join them at school recently. They were treated to an afternoon tea of lemon curd slice, scrolls, muffins and quiche made and served by our year 6 leaders. Then it was off to their grandchild's classroom to see where all the learning happens and to view some of their work. They also joined in some art and craft activities, games and a tour of our kitchen garden, butterfly garden and dream table.
