Diamond of a Wedding anniversary
By Lea Parkes Les and Pat Husson of Glass House Mountains celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last week. They sat down to share with me the story of how they met and the 60 wonderful years they have spent together. Les, who is originally from Victoria, was working at St George in shearing sheds when he met one of Pat’s five sisters through attending church. Fortunately she decided to invite him home to meet the rest of her family. Although neither Pat nor Les claim that it was love at first sight, Les was soon embraced as part of the family and within six months they knew they would spend the rest of their lives together. They were the first couple to get married in St
Patrick’s Church in St George on June 6, 1959 and their reception was held at the shire hall with the whole town of St George attending. Pat explained that for a few years they combined Les working for six months of the year in St George then returning to Victoria to work on an irrigation farm for the rest of the year. At the same time they were building a family of their own, which included three children - Tony, Mark and Tracey. Pat said that when the time came for the children to start school they decided to live permanently in Queensland, which saw them make Chinchilla their home before relocating to Brisbane and then,
almost 30 years ago, they came to Glass House. She said that on their wedding day the priest told them that “the couple that prays together stays together” and they firmly believe that sharing their faith and having the same values about life and family has been an important part of their lives. Neither of them thinks there is any such thing as a perfect marriage. They believe that it is important to have common goals, to always work together and support each other, and to provide a strong foundation for your family. They love living in Glass House Mountains where they have wonderful neighbours, and the people are kind and caring to each other. They feel fortunate that they are able to continue living in their home with the support of the wonderful service provided by Glasshouse Country Care.
Les describes their place as their piece of paradise. It is a modest house on a one and a half acre property. Over the years Les has turned the backyard into a parkland and their front verandah has a spectacular view of Mt Tibrogargan. “When we moved here our house became a base for our children and grandchildren and now is a playground for our great grandchildren. “We feel a sense of achievement when we see the strong bond of love in our family,” Pat said. When I asked Pat if she had received a diamond for her anniversary, Les responded, with a cheeky sparkle in his eye, that she didn’t need one as he was her diamond.

Have you got your Grey Medallion?
Mention the Bronze Medallion and a lot of people will know it’s to do with swimming and a lifesaving award. But how many of our local seniors know about the Grey Medallion? The Grey Medallion is a special lifesaving award created for the over 50s by the Royal Life Saving Society and it isn’t a swimming award. In fact, you don’t even have to be able to swim to get it. It’s a program that helps people to learn essential emergency care and lifesaving skills that could one day save family members, friends or even your own life. Grey Medallion trainer Patricia Barry explained that the Grey Medallion is a free two-day course that teaches participants how to act in emergency situations both on land and around the water. Many older Australians care for their grandchildren after school and during holidays, and many have pools or access to creeks, dams or the sea, so the course also covers safety information for a range of locations. “We also teach CPR, first aid, how to use a defibrillator, marine stings and waterwise skills as, unfortunately, everyone is prone to accidents,” Patricia said. “The course is run by fully qualified Grey Medallion and first aid trainers as well as lifesavers. “People don’t need to be able to swim and you don’t even have to be physically fit to do this course. We teach dry rescue skills, where you don’t even need to get into the water,” she said. Due to the increasing demand and popularity of the course, two courses will be held in Caloundra in July and August. The first is on July 20-21 and the second, as part of Seniors’ Week, on August 24-25. Both courses will be held at the Grand Pacific at Caloundra from 9am-4pm each day. Contributed by Norma McCormak Glasshouse Mountains Probus recently had a wonderfully happy day at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve with near perfect weather and a wide spread of ages present from just under 15 months to over 80 years. There was lots to see on the walk with cameras clicking on a snake, elusive small birds and pademelon families and a lovely barbeque lunch to enjoy. The group followed up this outing with a trip to the Events Centre at Caloundra to see ‘Senior Moments’, an extraordinary show that had us in fits of laughter for the whole time. The actors used very little in the way of props but managed to hit on every foible of older people using words and humour. The audience loved it. Retirement Villages and Manufactured Homes If you are considering downsizing and moving into a retirement village or manufactured home, knowing the differences between them can help you in making a decision that is right for you. Legal Features • In a retirement village, you buy the leasehold of your home for 99 years or until the last of you and your spouse, who is also noted on the lease, passes away. • In a manufactured home park, you buy the home and you rent the site underneath the manufactured home. Financial Features • In a retirement village, you pay an in-going lump sum contribution and an on-going general service charge. When you leave, you’ll pay an exit fee from the lump sum you contributed at the commencement of the lease. You will receive the balance. • In a manufactured home park, you pay the price for your home in a lump sum and you pay on-going site fees. When you leave, you must find a buyer to purchase your home and take over the site rent. • Purchasing a manufactured home or a retirement villa could impact any Centrelink benefit you receive. If you do receive a Centrelink benefit, you might be eligible for rent assistance to help you pay for the site rent in a manufactured home park.
