Staying connected
Most of us are aware of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Numerous studies attest to the importance of a balanced diet combined with regular exercise and quality social connections. And this is even more important as we age. As we age, some of the usual social structures that surround us – such as work – start to fade away and we can sometimes find ourselves feeling increasingly isolated. RangeCare’s CEO, Jenny McCafferty, believes that interaction with others, as well as participating in age-appropriate activities where people feel supported and safe, is important for all ages, but it’s especially important as we age. “It is well known that people who remain socially active into their latter years have a reduced risk of mental health issues, experience less stress, have a healthier immune system, and build a network of people around them who can offer ongoing support,” said Jenny. As well as offering a series of healthy lifestyle programs, RangeCare has a large volunteer program, which is another way of staying connected. “Volunteering is a great way to develop social networks and have fun, all while giving back to people in your local community,” said Jenny. RangeCare’s volunteers support the organisation and the community in a variety of ways. Some examples include providing office admin support, supporting RangeCare’s care support workers

during small group activities with elderly clients, helping out in the RangeCare Op Shop, and driving elderly clients to and from medical appointments. “We are always ready to welcome more volunteers,” said Jenny. At the moment, RangeCare is particularly seeking volunteers who can support staff and clients during aquarobics sessions at the Nambour pool, as well as someone who could deliver one-on-one computer training sessions for elderly clients as part of the Be Connected program. If you think that you could help out, RangeCare’s Volunteer Coordinator, Linda B, would love to hear from you. Call Linda on 5445 7044 for a no-obligation chat.

Various studies and health care professionals have repeatedly indicated that an active lifestyle – especially as you get older, brings numerous benefits. No matter what your age, becoming more active and getting your body moving will help enhance your mobility and flexibility, boost energy and help to increase your general sense of wellbeing – exercise can help you look better and feel better! Adequate fitness levels – especially for those aged over 65, can help maintain independence, enhance flexibility and mobility and reduce the impact of illness and chronic disease.
Regular physical activity can also contribute to better sleep quality, relieve stress, increase selfconfidence and can boost brain function and mood. Mobility classes are currently offered twice a week on Tuesday and Saturday mornings at 9am. These classes are specially designed to increase strength, mobility and movement and have proved extremely popular with members. As people age, they can experience a reduction in muscle mass, strength and physical endurance as well as a reduction in flexibility, co-ordination and balance. These gentle classes, as well as individually tailored programs offered at Beerwah’s Plus Fitness 24/7, can help address these issues – all in a friendly and social atmosphere. Come along – it’s fun! As well as 24-hour facility access, members can access free fitness programs developed by professional trainers tailored to suit their goals and needs. There is even a Plus Fitness App you can download. Currently Beerwah’s Plus Fitness 24/7 is offering a special Seniors rate (over 65) of just $12.95 a week – with two weeks free membership included! Fixed Fee Intitial Consultation Available Beerwah Law, formerly King Tobin Lawyers, are your local solicitors and have been established in Beerwah for over 30 years. Tracy King and her team are here to advise and assist you in legal areas relevant to Seniors including estate planning, estate administration, Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Advance Health Directives and entry and exit into retirement villages. We are a general practice and therefore we cover most areas of the law for you. We are ‘Your Lawyers For Life’.
Wills To ensure that the administration for your estate is as easy as possible for your loved ones we strongly recommend that a qualified solicitor draft your Will for you. Unfortunately, the courts are full of matters which are being litigated purely because a ‘home-made Will’ cannot be interpreted sensibly, has various interpretations or has not adequately considered all matters required. A well drafted Will also takes into account matters other than assets within the estate, such as superannuation and life insurance, to ensure that all of your assets are dealt with consistently. Importantly, a general discussion with us about the nature and extent of your assets and liabilities and our advice to you in that regard, can save your executors a great deal of time, money and stress.
the Guardianship and Administration Tribunal for an Order. Such an Order can take a considerable period of time and involves a great deal of work. It also can lead to ill-will and disputes between your loved ones.
Estate Administration This is a core part of our practice. We make this process as easy as is possible in your circumstances and tailor our service to your needs. Executors of estates are subject to very onerous obligations. We ensure that these obligations are fulfilled and that there are therefore no adverse implications for you. Please contact us to discuss your legal needs and make an appointment for us to assist you.
F:
Enduring Power of Attorney It is our opinion that everyone must have an Enduring Power of Attorney. In some respects, it is more important than a Will, as without one you may be left in a state of legal limbo with no-one able to legally look after your financial affairs or make health decisions for you. This, unfortunately, regularly happens to people who do not have an Enduring Power of Attorney and who find themselves in hospital but are assessed as not being able to return home. If they are incapable of making an Enduring Power of Attorney then an Application needs to be made through QCAT to

Bridge Club
Bridge Lessons Starting Soon
Why learn to play bridge? Played by over 220 million people worldwide, bridge is the most popular card game in the world. As a social game, bridge is a great way to meet new people. It is probably the only competitive activity that all generations can do together and all have an equal chance of winning. No matter where you go, you can always make new friends at the bridge table. It is mentally challenging, it is a great retirement hobby, something you can share with your life partner, and it offers lots of social interaction with people of all ages and from all walks of life. It can be played online as well as in a club, it is inexpensive, it can be enjoyed anywhere in the world (including on cruise ships!!) and… it is lots of fun. The medical profession is only now coming to realise that, with people tending to live longer, remaining mentally fit may be as important as maintaining levels of physical fitness. More and more often chess, bridge and crossword puzzles are being cited as excellent activities for keeping the brain exercised and stalling the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. The best news is that there is a Bridge Club here in your area. The Beerwah Bridge club is four years young and is going from strength to strength. At the moment we have more than 50 members and meet twice a week in the clubhouse of the Beerwah Golf Club.
New lessons commencing 28th September at 9.30am at Beerwah Golf Club Clubhouse
Give Tai Chi Qigong a try!
Local seniors are being encouraged to give ‘Tai Chi a try’ during a free session in the upcoming Seniors Week. Qigong Shibashi is a popular practice made up of 18 gentle flowing movements that harmonise mind, body and breath, strengthening the whole body. With regular practice Qigong helps to cleanse the body of toxins, restores energy, reduces stress and anxiety and helps individuals to maintain a healthy and active life. There is no experience necessary and it suitable for all ages. The complementary session will run for approximately one hour beginning with a warm up, 18 movements Shibashi and ending with a short guided meditation. Afternoon tea will be supplied after the session. The ‘Try Out’ session will be held on Tuesday August 21 from 2pm at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, 17 Bicentenary Lane, Maleny. To RSVP or to find out more, phone Lynette on 5429 6208.

The
SOUND OF TALKING From a member…
“I had heard about Toastmasters for a long time. Like many people I thought that Toastmasters was just for business people, but nothing could be further from the truth, especially in the Glasshouse Country club. “I was welcomed by the friendliest people, putting me instantly at ease and with no pressure I felt comfortable in the club from my first visit. “I even found that I was able to contribute. “It is a great place to make friends and meet new people. “Glasshouse Country Toastmasters Club meetings offer a supportive group environment where people from all walks of life come together to practise how to communicate, listen and enjoy a laugh. “One of the aspects of Toastmasters that surprised me most was just how much fun the meetings are. “Even without all the benefits of learning skills and expanding my comfort zone gradually, I would go to meetings simply for the entertainment.” If you are not sure about the Toastmaster experience, come as a guest and check it out. The only thing it will cost to visit is a couple of hours of your time. Included is a delicious morning tea. We meet every second and fourth Thursday of the month at 9am for a 9.15am start, at the Church on the Rise, 27 Beerwah Parade, Beerwah. Give us a call for more information: Barbara 5494 0321 / 0407 371 305 or Martine 5496 9855. 28

Free tinnitus relief study
Hinterland Audiometrist David Hine has over thirty-five years of experience with the hard of hearing. During that time he has seen many cases of people suffering tinnitus. Tinnitus is a physical condition experienced as noises or ringing in the ears or head where no such external noise is present. Around 15% of the world’s population can experience tinnitus to some degree, which can range in severity from a minor irritant to providing major misery and stress. Following the success of the Zen Tinnitus Program in Europe in recent years, David is keen to introduce the same to the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland. However, he would firstly like to run a free trial of the program to ensure that the evidence meets the overseas claims. In this regard he is seeking a group of tinnitus sufferers to take part in a six-week trial starting in mid-September. Participants will be selected following an interview and completion of an intake questionnaire and a standard Tinnitus Functional Index Survey. Ten successful participants are required for the study. Should you wish to apply early, registration is recommended. Contact David Hine (Dip Aud) on 5493 0382 or 0428 961 744.
Anita Trendle, Psychologist Ph: 0488 838 301 Psychological Well-Being in Older People Emotional well-being for older people is very important, and often overlooked. This is what twenty years of experience as a Psychologist in private practice has taught me. Mental health problems can happen at any point in life. But older people experience additional stressors, like ongoing loss of capacities, events such as bereavement, or perhaps a drop in social or economic status with retirement. All of these stressors can result in isolation, loneliness or psychological distress in older people. I am offering psychological support to the Glasshouse region for adults and elderly people, with a practice based in Landsborough. I am also able to offer home visits where appropriate. With a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, I am able to offer services either bulk billed for pensioners, or with a small gap fee. Being ‘older and wiser’ doesn’t mean you have to struggle with problems on your own. Call me on 0488 838 301.

Millie’s milestone birthday celebrated
Not all members of the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club get a cake for their birthday, however at the end of July when the club’s most senior (active) club member Millie Freshwater celebrated her 90th birthday it was a cause for special celebration. At Wednesday Bowls there was a morning tea to celebrate Millie’s milestone achievement and, of course, what would a birthday be without a cake? Club Chairman Jim Tatum also presented Millie with her Matriarch badge. Millie has been bowling for 40 years and became a member of the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club back in 2005 after moving to the area.
