Make health and exercise your priority

Funerals from $1670.00

Last year Sally Prior emigrated from the UK to live with her family in Glass House Mountains. Sally, who is 73, had previously been a keen fitness devotee and continued to be one long after she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. As her condition developed, she began to struggle with things like balance and getting up and down from her seat. At the suggestion of her family, she decided to join them at Beerwah’s Plus Fitness 24/7, in the hope that it would help improve her overall mobility and ensure her condition didn’t deteriorate further. For the last six months she has attended regular weekly sessions with personal trainer Kris. She loves these sessions and finds that Kris’s support and guidance keep her motivated to keep trying. Sally said: “My condition of MS will never improve, however maintaining my level of fitness and movement is my ongoing goal. “I’m enjoying life in the best way I can, and Kris helps me achieve that. I have made some great improvements since working with him and love the social aspect of coming to the gym too,” Sally said. She highly recommends adding a gym visit to everyone’s weekly plan, especially as you reach a more mature age – it’s also a lovely way to meet others. In just over six months Sally has improved constantly. By making her health and exercise a priority she has improved her wellbeing and movement and been an inspiration to those around her. Fixed Fee Intitial Consultation Available Beerwah Law, formerly King Tobin Lawyers, are your local solicitors and have been established in Beerwah for over 30 years. Tracy King and her team are here to advise and assist you in legal areas relevant to Seniors including estate planning, estate administration, Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Advance Health Directives and entry and exit into retirement villages. We are a general practice and therefore we cover most areas of the law for you. We are ‘Your Lawyers For Life’.

Wills To ensure that the administration for your estate is as easy as possible for your loved ones we strongly recommend that a qualified solicitor draft your Will for you. Unfortunately, the courts are full of matters which are being litigated purely because a ‘home-made Will’ cannot be interpreted sensibly, has various interpretations or has not adequately considered all matters required. A well drafted Will also takes into account matters other than assets within the estate, such as superannuation and life insurance, to ensure that all of your assets are dealt with consistently. Importantly, a general discussion with us about the nature and extent of your assets and liabilities and our advice to you in that regard, can save your executors a great deal of time, money and stress.

the Guardianship and Administration Tribunal for an Order. Such an Order can take a considerable period of time and involves a great deal of work. It also can lead to ill-will and disputes between your loved ones.

Estate Administration This is a core part of our practice. We make this process as easy as is possible in your circumstances and tailor our service to your needs. Executors of estates are subject to very onerous obligations. We ensure that these obligations are fulfilled and that there are therefore no adverse implications for you. Please contact us to discuss your legal needs and make an appointment for us to assist you.

Enduring Power of Attorney It is our opinion that everyone must have an Enduring Power of Attorney. In some respects, it is more important than a Will, as without one you may be left in a state of legal limbo with no-one able to legally look after your financial affairs or make health decisions for you. This, unfortunately, regularly happens to people who do not have an Enduring Power of Attorney and who find themselves in hospital but are assessed as not being able to return home. If they are incapable of making an Enduring Power of Attorney then an Application needs to be made through QCAT to

quality, relieve stress, increase self-confidence and can boost brain function and mood. Mobility classes are currently offered twice a week on Tuesday and Saturday mornings at 9am. These classes are specially designed to increase strength, mobility and movement and have proved extremely popular with members. As people age, they can experience a reduction in muscle mass, strength and physical endurance as well as a reduction in flexibility, co-ordination and balance. These classes, as well as individually tailored programs offered at Beerwah’s Plus Fitness 24/7, can help address these issues – all in a friendly and social atmosphere.

As well as 24 hour access, members can access free fitness programs developed by professional trainers tailored to suit their goals and needs. There is even a Plus Fitness App you can download. By Lea Parkes After meeting in Brisbane just over 60 years ago, born and bred Maleny local Stan Collard and his lovely wife Gloria have shared an interesting life together working and living around the state, including 12 years in Rockhampton while Stan was a Country Party Senator for Queensland. However, a few years ago whilst in their 70s, they decided to retire in Maleny. Gloria and Stan knew that their two daughters who lived in Brisbane would have liked them to settle closer, but they had their heart set on life in Maleny. While the last few years have seen them both slow down a little and need more assistance in their daily lives, they are pleased that they stuck to their decision to head to Maleny and are thankful that they discovered RangeCare. Stan and Gloria are quick to sing the praises of the quality of the organisation and the wonderful service that they receive from the staff who have made it possible for them live a comfortable life together in their own home. They settled happily into a modern home at Sandstone Gardens where their walls are covered with framed photos of special family memories and achievements. Stan is very proud that they have been able to maintain their independence in their own home and still have space for their daughters and their son, who lives in Biloela, to come and visit them. These days they don’t get out as much as they used to, and it is easy to see that it is not just the support that the RangeCare staff provide on their twice daily visits, but also the connections that they have with those staff which are important to their daily lives. Stan described one of their carers as a “one off and a bit of a character”, which seemed to me a perfect match for Stan’s personality. He may have physically slowed down a little, but the former Senator is still very sharp and clearly enjoyed sharing his views on a range of topics.

10% SENIORS DISCOUNT Stan made sure I understood that he was a parliamentarian and not a politician. For the record, and according to Stan, a parliamentarian is someone who is concerned with future generations whereas politicians are concerned with future elections! With the couple’s 60th wedding anniversary coming up on March 3, Stan, with tongue firmly in cheek, happily told me and reminded Gloria how lucky she was to have met and married him and that it was his capacity for tolerance that had made him excellent marriage material over the years. Stan is also clearly very proud of the opportunities as a parliamentarian that he was able to share with Gloria, such as in 1980 when the Queen and Prince Phillip visited Australia and the Queen officially opened the iconic High Court building in Canberra. At this event Prince Phillip spoke to Gloria asking her why she was there, and she politely answered that she was just there with her spouse, and Prince Phillip (probably one of the world’s best known other halves) confided that he knew that feeling. Stan also suggested that another secret to staying married for almost 60 years could also have been assisted by the time he spent away from home, particularly while he was travelling in his role as a parliamentarian.

“Being home less often, probably made it easier for Gloria to appreciate me, and didn’t give her enough time to pick on me,” Stan quipped. When I commented on their lovely wedding photos, and the beautiful gowns both the bride and her bridesmaids were wearing, Stan quickly informed me that Gloria made them all herself, which by today’s standards is pretty impressive. In the way they interact together it is easy to see that Stan still thinks Gloria is pretty impressive! While Gloria may be a little more reserved in sharing her opinions, she thinks that it is important to be able to appreciate each other, and I have sneaky suspicions it isn’t just Stan who has a great capacity for tolerance. Over 60s required to test phone app Sunshine Coast residents over 60 years of age are needed for a USC trial of a new mobile phone app designed to assess the risk of people becoming frail and provide interventions to reduce this risk. Fifty local participants are required for the 18-month trial of the My Active and Healthy Aging (my-AHA) app as part of an extensive international study. Associate Professor Mathew Summers, lead researcher at USC’s Sunshine Coast Mind and Neuroscience – Thompson Institute, said the study would assess the app’s effectiveness in assessing a person’s risk for becoming frail and providing inhome interventions tailored to the individual’s needs.

Share housing for seniors

By Sonia Clark We often hear the phrase “home is where the heart is”, but what happens if you are an older person who can’t afford a home? Housing affordability is not far from the headlines these days, however, more often than not the news stories focus on issues faced by younger people trying to break into the housing market – not older people facing similar challenges. Community driven solutions are gaining in popularity and over the last few years there has been an increase in co-housing or shared housing models with growing interest from the older people indicating that this is definitely an area of increasing need. A few years ago, following on from a change in personal circumstances, Linda Mina found herself left with a mortgage and struggling to make ends meet. In her 60s, with her children having left home, Linda felt the only way to afford any sort of life was to sell her house and rent. “When I looked at the cost of rentals I soon realized I could not afford even a one-bedroom apartment on my pension,” Linda said. “So, remembering the share houses from my youth, I decided to check on Gumtree, where I found most share adverts were younger people not interested in sharing with a mature aged person." So Linda decided to create a group on Facebook that would allow seniors to seek or offer share accommodation. Last year ‘Seniors Share Houses Sunshine Coast’ Facebook was established and it currently has over 480 members. Linda soon realised that many mature people also wanted a space to share stories and information and so ‘Seniors Connect’ was also established. To find out more go to www.facebook.com/groups/1590650011231482/ (Seniors Connect) or www.facebook.com/groups/681536018691198/ (Seniors Share Houses Sunshine Coast).

‘Stirling’ move for Lember & Williams

Lember and Williams are excited at the move of their Maleny offices to smart new premises – ‘Stirling on Bunya’ opposite the Maleny Primary School. Principal Carolyn Williams, who has 35 years of experience in several areas of law said that many Australians believe that filling out a will kit from their local newsagency, or downloaded from the internet, will cover them when they pass away. “In a modern and more complex world, it won’t and at worst, could see your real wishes disregarded,” she explains. Carolyn invites you to make an appointment to discuss, and seek her advice in preparing not just your will, but your enduring powers of attorney, health directives and putting into place testamentary trusts. Visit the Lember & Williams (LAW) website for more info at www.landw.com.au or to book an appointment at either the new Maleny office or at their Caboolture premises. The LAW Wills and Estate lawyers will work effectively not just with you – but with your accountant, financial planner and other professionals – ensuring a thorough consideration of all relevant estate and succession planning issues. •

Take ownership of your retirement future As we look towards planning retirement living options, a safe and welcoming environment, freedom and flexibility, access to well appointed facilities and an engaged and connected community are key considerations for many people. One consideration that can be overlooked is that lifestyle and health can sometimes change unexpectedly and that it is best to not “wait until tomorrow” to securely plan your retirement living options. Tony and Ann Eccles are happily-settled residents at Caloundra Rise Retirement Estate located at Village Way, Little Mountain, Caloundra. After raising their family in Victoria, they relocated to the beautiful close-knit community of Peachester, where they lived for 28 years.

Life flourished until Tony’s health took an unexpected downturn. “I’d not given it much thought but after this incident I started to think about the future and I realised that one of us could be living alone one day – it was time for us to turn the page for the next chapter,” Tony said. Tony and Ann chose Caloundra Rise as their home four years ago because of the generous wider streets, the beautifully maintained gardens, community atmosphere and friendliness of the residents. Access to the Retirement Living Manager, long term administration, maintenance support staff, and the ability to receive in-home care from an approved provider provides additional reassurance. Residents also have the peace of mind of having onsite access to residential aged care. “Leaving behind the familiar and settling into a new community is challenging. It’s harder to adjust when your health changes at the same time,” Ann said. For anyone considering retirement living, Ann and Tony offer what they have learned. One of the key points they recommend is to make sure the atmosphere and amenities of your chosen village suit what you truly need, and be clear in your mind what your needs and wants are. They also suggest that having a clear understanding of the way finances are structured in the village you are considering is vital as well as ensuring you are fully comfortable with the structure. The more information you can gather as well as a first-hand impression of what’s on offer can provide a valuable basis to assist in making an informed and comfortable decision.

They also offer one final tip to those wanting to take ownership of their retirement future. “Most importantly, don’t wait until tomorrow!” Tony and Ann both agree. Today Tony and Ann lead a very busy retirement lifestyle. Tony assists with the production of The Clarion, the monthly magazine for the village and, as a jeweller by trade, enjoys spending time on his craft in his hobby workshop. Ann is a liaison officer at Caloundra Rise for the Association of Residents of Queensland Retirement Villages who advocate for best practice retirement living. “At Caloundra Rise there are wonderful facilities and daily activities and so much fun. We have never regretted our decision to move to Caloundra Rise retirement estate. “It’s been the right move for us,” Tony and Ann agree. If you’d like to know more about living in this wonderful retirement estate, call Retirement Living Manager Peter Snell on 5438 0655, and come and visit and experience what this lovely village offers.
