On any given day, RangeCare’s team of registered nurses is out and about tending to the needs of clients who are living along Nurse Mary, Nurse Claire and Nurse the range and who are living Donna independently in their home. Nurse Donna, a familiar face for many of RangeCare’s Maleny clients, said the nursing team often had very full days meeting the needs of its clients. “We not only provide care to many of our clients, but we also provide significant support to our care support workers who are sometimes presented with some tricky situations,” said Donna. Nurse Mary is proud of RangeCare’s nursing service and felt that for many clients, knowing there are nurses on staff with RangeCare is important. As one of RangeCare’s longest serving nurses and packaged care coordinators, she is proud of RangeCare’s nursing heritage. “A nurse was the foundation staff member when RangeCare was formed more than 30 years ago,” said Mary. During a time when many home care providers were outsourcing nursing services, RangeCare committed to continuing to employ its own team who could be available to not only clients, but also staff. Jack Wilcox
Local author serves up history of local tennis Maleny author and historian Jack Wilcox has once again put his grey cells to very good use penning a new book, ‘Maleny Memories – thru the lens of tennis’. This marks Jack’s fourth book since his “retirement” to the Hinterland, and no doubt promises to be another intriguing insight into the history and local cultural standards of a bygone era. At 85, Jack Wilcox AM has no plans to slow down, and his writing reflects an incredibly full and interesting life. During his professional career Jack was a key player in the vibrant and emerging Australian coal industry, during a time when government careers could be made by a toss of the coin – as in the case of Jack, whose resulting 30-year career was established during the Whitlam years by “winning the coal job” portfolio. He then went on to become the department’s advisor (and confidante) to a successive number of high profile ministers. Upon retirement Jack was awarded the Order of Australia and received an honorary doctorate for his services to the coal industry. In 2014 he published his well-received memoir, ‘Coalman’, which captured the inner workings of behind the scenes political life during the Whitlam, Fraser and Hawke years. His other two previously released regional histories were inspired by his interest in the local community. One book, ‘Rotary in Maleny’, was born from the extensive archival work he undertook for the local Rotary Club, and the other

centred around a local parish priest entitled ‘A Parish Odyssey’. Jack has returned to his love of local history with his newest book which looks at the impact that tennis had on the local area from 1903 through to 2004. The book traces the history of various clubs from Landsborough and Peachester, along the Maleny plateau to Wootha, Witta and Conondale and also provides a historical snapshot of the social interests the game provided. The social aspect of tennis underpinned many of these communities, especially in the early half of the twentieth century. Jack is self-professed tennis tragic and says he has loved the game since he was a teenager. “Tennis was a real family game back then – everyone could enjoy it and you could play anytime you like – we all grew up with it,” says Jack. The book traces the history of local clubs by the decades and leads into the formation of the Maleny District Tennis Association, however Jack says the real heyday for the game was during the 1920s and 1930s. He says during this time there would have been around 250 dairy farms and most of them would have had their own tennis court. “Especially around the mid 1920s-1930s, tennis was the social hub of the areas – there were tennis courts everywhere and the game served to ignite the local social activity.”
To research the book, Jack spent hundreds of hours trawling through Trove (the free Australian online library database aggregator) which provided a wealth of material and leads. Familiar with archival work, he also spent a huge amount of time researching tennis-related local articles and the historical records of local clubs. Now that he has completed this book, according to Jack “plans are already bubbling away” for his next one, which should keep his grey cells working! Jack will be launching ‘Maleny Memories – thru the lens of tennis’ this Sunday, June 17, at the Pat Daley Room in the Maleny Catholic Church at 10.15am.

Hi Julie here, I thought it was high time for our latest update. Well there's plenty to share!! My great “social organiser”, Di, suggested as part of the social calendar that we have a Bollywood Day. So, this took place a few Tuesdays ago. What a huge success!! Tell ya something, if you want to see my group "Go Off!" just throw on some Bollywood routines!! To look out and see their outstanding costumes, and the smiles on their faces, was so worth every bit of effort that went into this day. Thank you Di, and also a big thank you to Marianne and Pete, who opened up their beautiful home to us on this day as well. Wonderful hospitality, and even a sumptuous Indian cooked lunch after class! This day was such a success that I have decided to change my class format slightly and now will be incorporating a new timetable, and this will be Zumba Gold / Bollywood! If you are reading this, don't put off joining this very special group any longer. I can assure you, it will be the best thing you do! Feel free to call me anytime, and we will chat!

The local area has lost another icon with the passing of Monica Smith on April 25. Monica believed that hard work and kindness is the backbone of society, and these approaches to how she lived her life contributed much to our local community over many years. The details of Monica’s life in this story are taken from the family’s eulogy presented by two of her grandsons, Cameron Smith and Mathew Rolfe at her funeral. Monica Estelle Smith was born on 31st March 1925 to Edward and Elenor Nissen at Imbil, Queensland. She was the youngest of six children. The third child, George, died at birth and Monica was herself not expected to live – 93 years later she proved them all wrong. Monica was 16 years old when the family moved to the property at Beerwah on the hill overlooking what is now Australia Zoo, where she worked hard with her father growing pineapples, paw paws and other small crops. It was war time and as both her brothers were away at war, she was able to get her driver’s licence at the age of 16, and drive an old Chevy. Monica married Lawrence Smith in 1946 at the St Andrews Church in Brisbane and together they had five children John, Nerida, Phillip, Jennifer and Helen who were raised at the Pine Camp Road, Beerwah property, called Endcliffe, established in 1913, by Lawrence’s parents, Alice and Ernest. Monica worked with Lawrence when the property was a poultry farm, then a dairy and finally turning to growing pineapples, small crops and ginger. Gardening was a big part of Monica’s life and something that brought her great joy and pride, hosting many garden parties for various charities and church groups as well as the local school. Monica was well known for her love of cooking and spent many hours preparing entries for the Maleny and RNA shows as well as the CWA. She loved to compete but was not afraid to question the judge’s decision if she felt her
entry was more worthy, and over a period of approximately 60 years she won a multitude of awards not only for cooking but for fine embroidery, cut flowers and sewing. Her family (which grew to include eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren, with the fifth on the way) were told not to bother phoning or visiting in the lead up to the show because she was far too busy. Monica was self-taught in all that she did; music, floral art, gardening, cooking, sewing, making bridal dresses and wedding cakes. Once a steward at the RNA asked Monica how she learnt her skills, she replied, “By the light of a hurricane lamp!” Local, Max Whitten said, “Monica Smith has been the mainstay of the cooking section of the Maleny Show for the past 60 years. It’s folk like Monica that give soul to communities.” If she was in a cricket team she would have been the greatest all rounder!
