Staying vigilant against scammers BANK of Queensland is urging Australians to talk more openly about scams as increasingly sophisticated criminals use artificial intelligence and other technology to target victims. The warning comes ahead of Scams Awareness Week, from August 24 to 28, which this year carries the theme “No one’s just a number”. BOQ’s Erin Phillips said scammers were skilled at creating urgency and exploiting fear, excitement and trust. “Behind every scam statistic is a real person
whose money, trust and confidence has been impacted,” Ms Phillips said. “Being targeted by a scam is not a reflection of a person’s intelligence. These criminals are highly organised and constantly adapting their tactics.” BOQ is backing Scamwatch’s Stop. Check. Protect. campaign, encouraging people to pause before providing personal or banking information, verify unexpected requests using trusted contact details and report suspected scams. The bank said Australians
should remain alert to investment, impersonation, romance, phishing and payment redirection scams. Ms Phillips said advances in artificial intelligence, deepfake technology and social engineering were making some scams increasingly convincing. “The best protection is to pause, verify and seek a second opinion before sending money or sharing personal information,” she said. People who believe they have been targeted should contact their bank and report the matter to Scamwatch.
