Landsborough Pool Supplies celebrating 15 years! Ron and Jan Horne along with two of their daughters, Dee and Ally, and family friend turned employee Leila Josey, celebrate 15 years of business at Landsborough Pool Supplies this month. Ron and Jan are long-time locals having lived in the area more than 30 years, with Leila also growing up in the area. Before buying the business they both worked in the health industry. The couple like to say they have gone from looking after people’s health to now looking after pool health! Landsborough Pool Supplies is a genuine family owned and run business as Ron and Jan not only have their daughters involved but also their three granddaughters work and help out in the store. Since taking over the business in 2004, their client base has expanded from 30 to well over 100 regular call out service customers per month, in addition to numerous everyday pool maintenance queries and callouts. They also enjoy seeing their regular drop-in clients who come to them for advice and supplies. The couple genuinely love this area and over the
past 15 years they are pleased to have forged not just great working relationships with their clients, but some real lifelong friendships. Ron says everyone knows when they come into the store that not only can they get everything they need for their pools and spas, along with maintenance tips, they will often walk away with great fishing advice from Ron, pet and animal advice from Ally, and sports and kids advice from Dee and Leila. “As well as all that - we are really good at fixing pools!” laughs Dee. Jan said that they service clients from all around the local community as well as the greater Sunshine Coast region, through Buderim and Nambour, out to Conondale, Kiel Mountain and beyond. She said that they will happily go to Woop Woop and beyond for their clients. “We love that many of our clients had originally lived in the local area but still want our team to continue looking after them in their new homes,” Jan said. She says the team can assist with everything to do with pool and spa care - from equipment install and repairs, breakdowns, supply and install of cleaners, blankets, general chemicals and accessories, as well as free water testing in store. “We pretty much look after everything except the actual building of your pool or spa! If we don’t have something that you need, we’ll source it for you. You can even bring in a photo or a small piece of broken equipment as Ron, Ally and Leila are really good at identifying exactly what it is you need to fix,” Jan said.
Ally says they pride themselves on offering good honest advice and they don’t believe in trying to sell clients extra stuff they don’t need. “We are definitely no frills but our competitive prices and years of knowledge are what people keep coming back for,” Ally said. Cob comeback a winner!
By Sonia Clark The design and unique construction of a Mediterranean inspired eco cob cottage in Maleny recently won two awards at the 2019 Building Designers’ Association of Queensland state awards. The two-bedroom cottage, Cobhearthome, was built using local and salvaged materials. It won awards in the categories of Sustainable building design – residential and Best small home (gross floor area under 150m2) at the gala awards night held in Brisbane on July 20. The cottage, designed by Brett Grimley from Ecolibrium Designs at Eumundi, was constructed from cob (earth construction) and second-hand materials. Brett said he was particularly pleased with the award as the client was incredibly passionate and motivated.
“The house is not only a beautiful home, it also ticks so many boxes from a sustainability and affordability point of view, and is now a sought-after Airbnb destination,” Brett said. Cob construction is an ancient time-honoured building technique that uses natural and sustainable materials mixed together such as clay, sand and straw. Although inexpensive, the process of creating cob construction is extremely labour intensive and time consuming but yields stunning artistic and sculptural results. Cob is created by repeatedly mixing the material (often by stomping) to create a malleable product that can be moulded to create walls and structures. Cob is built in layers, which requires patience waiting for the previous layer to part-dry before any additional layers can be added. As well as being an Airbnb destination, Cobhearthome also features on other accommodation sites. It is described by the owner as part cob, part contemporary construction. The owner is proud of the home’s unique construction, which includes characterful salvaged materials, and its eco-friendly credentials, which are further
boosted by using interesting recyclables including timber from Brisbane’s Brett’s Wharf and more localised finds such as doors from the old Maleny Community Centre. To find more about this unique local building search for Cobhearthome – Maleny.

Maybe it’s time to freshen up the look and bring your home into the 21st century. It’s as easy as a new lick of paint. Last week, Anthony Austin and the team at the Beerwah Paint Place on Simpson Street moved into their new digs ... just a couple of doors up from where they have been for years. It’s open and bright and the colour and design creativity area gives you lots of ideas for your project. However, like any project, you don’t just jump in and start slapping on the paint. If you want to get that professional look finish, you need to think like a pro. Take it from Anthony, most of the mistakes are made even before a brush or roller hits the wall. Here’s Anthony’s top ten tips before you start painting: 1. Colour selection: Choosing the right colours is everything. Use the take-home colour charts available in the store to mix, match and contrast your colours to create the perfect palate. 2. Paint selection: Always use premium quality paint as it covers better, goes on easer and is a more durable finish. 3. How much paint: Measure your area to find the square metreage (length x height) divide by 12 to get average litres per coat.

4. Colour test first: Buy a couple of sample pots and test the colours in different spots to see if the colours work on your surfaces. 5. Brush and roller selection: Same as paint, use good quality tools as they will release the paint more evenly and give a smoother finish. 6. Surface preparation: Make sure the surface is cleaned with appropriate cleaner (sugar soap), fill any imperfections and gaps, and do a light sand. 7. Other supplies: Don’t forget rags, drop sheets, scrapers, sanding blocks, masking tape, sugar soap, just to name a few. 8. Cover up: Cover windows and glass by taping up newspaper to prevent splatter marks. 9. Is it a professional’s job? If you think the job is too big Beerwah Paint Place can recommend great local painters. 10. Painting techniques: To avoid lap marks, roll the full height of the wall and keep a wet edge.

Around the world pollinators are under threat. The best known to us is the honey bee due to their importance in pollinating many of our crops and, of course, the sweet delight that is honey. However, Australia is also home to more than 1,500 species of native bees and there are many other pollinators including species of butterflies, moths, beetles, weevils, wasps and flying foxes to name a few. A year or so ago on Facebook a story did the rounds that was fake but was attributed as coming from David Attenborough. It proposed that we assist starving bees by putting out little containers of sugar water. This was a classic case of social media pop environmentalism at its worst, suggesting that we can solve the problem in five seconds by putting a spoon of sugar out for the bees before quickly getting back to our coffee and screen looking for the next big cause. The irony of the sugar solution is the damage that the production of sugar does to the environment – including bees! Surprise, surprise, bees need flowering plants for all their pollen, nectar, resins and waxes to survive and thrive. To produce sugar we clear or have cleared vast areas of forest that used to produce a mix of flowers throughout the year and then replaced the forest with a grass (sugar cane). We then to put it through an agro-industrial process to produce an energy source that is not only questionable in our diet but a very poor substitute for the nectar from flowering plants. To actually save bees and other pollinators, stop spraying insecticides (they do kill bees) and plant a variety of native groundcovers, shrubs, vines and trees in your gardens and throughout the wider landscape – it’s really that simple. Oh yes… and remember to be wary of pop, easy solutions on Facebook (but I don’t have to tell you that as you’re sensibly reading the paper).
