School holiday fun at Maleny book festival
As children and parents count down the days to school holidays, book lovers in Maleny are putting the final touches on the jam-packed children’s program for this year’s Celebration of Books festival. Held from July 13-15, there’ll be plenty of fun and creative activities to keep the kids busy in the last weekend of the school holidays. Organising committee member Claire Booth said Celebration of Books is all about embracing the joy, passion, creativity and adventure that books bring. And they’ve got some great events lined up to make sure the kids are part of that. At 5pm on Friday July 13, awardwinning author Aleesah Darlison and talented illustrator Emma Middleton will launch their new book, ‘The Dream Bird’, with a pyjama party at the Maleny Library. All ages can join in on the free event, with songs, games, readings and more, including prizes for the best PJs, best slippers and kookiest outfit! The library will be buzzing again on the Saturday with the Friends of Maleny Library’s Bumper Book Sale from 9am, a gorgeous display of original
illustrations from children’s books inside the library, and the Sunshine Storytime party from 10am. Young and old are invited to come dressed as a character from their favourite book and enjoy listening to some of the Sunshine Coast’s finest authors and illustrators read their stories. With puppets, prizes, giveways and opportunities to have books signed, this is a great way to engage kids in the shared delights of books, storytelling and reading. Budding young authors, poets and illustrators can hone their skills on Saturday afternoon with two fabulous workshops specifically designed for children aged 6 to 12. Create and draw your very own fantasy character with Aleesah Darlison at the Fairies, Unicorns & Dragons workshop. Or be inspired by the native animals and surrounds of Maleny with the Magic Mountain illustration workshop, hosted by local Sunshine Coast artist Kerry Ide. GC&M News is keen to expand upon what we have been doing with our Hinterland Kids features, and ultimately create a wonderful local resource that is featured quarterly (just before School Holidays) to connect families
living locally with the businesses, services and groups that can assist them. Hinterland Kids will feature in our upcoming editions, just in time for the school holidays, September 12 and December 5. We will be looking for great local stories, articles and businesses to become a part of this concept. By Sonia Clark Celebrated local author and publisher Jill Morris has spent years sharing her passion for conservation and creating inspirational resources for children. For over 20 years, visitors including artists, writers and school children of all ages have been inspired at ‘Book Farm’, the much-loved creative space located at Reesville. Located on the property owned by Jill and her late husband Richard Dent, ‘Book Farm’ and its surrounding acres of rainforest have played host to thousands of visiting school children and undoubtedly fired up the creative imaginations of countless young and young at heart visitors. Now it is time for a change of focus for Jill, and she has planned a very special event to herald the end of the ‘Book Farm’ era. On Friday July 6 and Saturday July 7 between 9am and 3pm, hundreds of books will be given away for free. Jill describes the upcoming event as almost “a last hurrah” and it will be like a mini garage sale of books and items accumulated over the years. In some ways too, this gift of free books to the community can also be viewed as a fitting tribute to the memory of Richard, who spent numerous years as “warehouse storeman” packing and preserving books including those from their independent publishing company ‘Greater Glider Productions’. “Going through the warehouse, I was surprised how many books we had so neatly packed,” said Jill. “Big publishers would often pulp their remainders so we would say ‘give them to us’ to save them from being pulped. I was concerned that these titles should now be in children’s hands – hence the giveaway.”
The book sale will run for two days with Friday allocated to teachers and teacher librarians, and the Saturday open to families and the general public. On Friday teachers and librarians will have the opportunity to take away full classroom book sets of various titles and free books for their libraries, while Saturday has more of a family focus. On both days free books will be given away in the property’s pool house. Hundreds of publisher remainder copies and out of print books will be distributed. A small bundle of collectors’ items will be available, and a popup bookshop of specially priced more recent titles will be facilitated onsite by Rosetta Books in the Mandarin Tree Room. The event will also feature a Maleny Lions Club sausage sizzle, CWA Devonshire tea, book readings, and art demonstrations with illustrator Heather Gall. Bring your own carry bag! This not to be missed book lovers’ event will be held at 8 Rees Lane, Reesville.

Lock in your spot at Vacation Care Winter school holidays are almost here but there is still time to lock in your spot at Glass House Early Education Centre for some awesome school holiday fun. Vacation care offers school aged children a fantastic range of activities, excursions and kid focussed fun which can appeal to the kids of stay at home as well as working families. The program has been carefully planned to ensure a ‘boredom free zone’ and most activities are included in the daily fees, while CCB discounts are available for activities which may incur additional costs. The vacation care program is a great way for kids to be creative and engaged, try new activities and meet other local children in a safe and supportive environment. Ange and the team at Glass House Early Education Centre have put their thinking caps on and have released a jam-packed program for their ‘Schoolies’ with a heap of awesome activities, cool and creative crafts, boredom busting excursions, local adventures and more! Week One kicks off on Monday July 2 and will feature activities focussed on the ‘Schoolies’ garden and a special ‘project’ using recycled paper. Tuesday will see the ‘schoolies’ head off on an excursion to join other vacation care groups for a ‘colour fun run’. Wednesday promises some super crafty action with a day making cool creative pieces such as dream catchers (including special unicorn dream catchers), wind chimes and special keepsakes for home.
Thursday the group will head to Mount Tibro for a bushwalk and lovely picnic, and Friday will be the always popular messy play day. Week Two commences Monday July 9 and features a mixed science and art day (who knows what wonderful creations can be made when you mix the two!). Tuesday involves a special excursion to Sunshine Animal Refuge on the Centre Bus. This will be a lovely way for the schoolies to take the donations that have been collected at the centre and meet the volunteers and some of the rescue animals first hand that will benefit from the collection. Strawberry Fields will be forever on Wednesday when the children head off to the Glenview Strawberry farm to pick (and sample!) strawberries – yum! An art incursion - similar to the hugely popular ‘Sand Wizards’ that came last holidays is on Thursday and Friday will be the highly anticipated ‘Master Chef’ day – so bring a big appetite! During term time, ‘Schoolies’ before and after school care is available and includes a popular (especially for parents) ‘homework club’. The Centre also has its own dedicated bus with localised school drop off and afternoon pickups available. Currently the service is available for Beerburrum, Beerwah and Glass House State Schools as well as Glasshouse Christian College. Girl Guides at Glass House
Local girls from age six recently attended a come and try Guiding Day, where they got to experience many different activities by playing ‘The Game of Guiding’, a board style game where participants move their counter around the board following the instructions on the spots landed upon. It wasn’t all smooth sailing though, with go backs and forfeits to be paid. Some of the challenges included making a “masterpiece” with icing on a biscuit, building a structure from cardboard tubes, placing a sling on the teddy bears, making God’s Eyes and designing their own Guide uniform. Glass House Mountain Guides meet on Mondays from 4pm till 6pm at the Glass House Mountains Community Hall, 8 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains. It is open to girls aged six years to 17. Sunshine Coast dad Joel Winters has figured out how to ease the stress on parents when taking the kids out on a busy day. Snap Info is a fashionable band that snaps onto your child’s wrist and contains valuable contact information if they get lost in a crowd. Joel, a father of two, wanted to make something affordable, functional and reusable to help children have the details required if separated from their parents. The snap band contains a Quick Response (QR) code which, when scanned by a mobile phone, provides your contact details so you can be quickly reunited with your child. Simon, a parent who has tried the band with his children, said: “It’s an easy and affordable way to avoid a potentially traumatic experience for everyone involved, and it’s really taken a load off my mind.” The bands are just $10 each, including contact information being hosted online for a year. Continued success for Black Swan students
Students from Landsborough's Black Swan School of Dance delighted audience members and adjudicators at the recent DanceLife Unite Eisteddfod at Matthew Flinders Performing Arts Centre. Dancing against fierce competition from across Queensland, the school's junior performance took out second place in the Eight Years and Under Jazz category, while soloists Olivia Frahm–Bell and Savannah Charters placed second/third and fourth in Contemporary/Ballet and Acro respectively. Black Swan owner and principal dance teacher Mrs Rebecca said the result was a reflection of the girls’ hard work and commitment to dance. “Not only did the students have a great time performing but they also gained invaluable stage experience which will further their results in the next competition," she said. The children at the Landsborough Kindergarten were delighted to spend time recently with their special guests, residents from Dicky Beach Aged Care. The children made the most of the opportunity to sing and dance, read stories, paint and play with their older guests. Kindy Teacher Director Ellie Watson said Landsborough Kindergarten believes it is important to build strong, positive and nurturing community relationships, and this visit is an example of how the Kindergarten helps to create this type of environment. “It is always such a delight watching different generations interact and share their stories with each other,” Ellie said.

School News Cupcakes for Chappy
Beerwah State Primary School recently held a Cupcake Stall to raise funds for the chaplaincy service, under the guidance of Chappy Mike Turner. There were over 800 cupcakes donated by generous mums, dads, students and community members and at the last count, $633 was raised. With such a great variety of cupcakes, the students found it hard to decide which one they would choose. Chappy Mike thanked everyone for their generous support and help for this worthwhile service.
Students give Fanfare the thumbs up
Five Beerburrum State School Instrumental Music students recently travelled to Meridan State College to perform as part of Education Queensland’s Fanfare Music Festival. Fanfare is a bi-annual event that takes place throughout the state, offering school ensembles the chance to perform and receive feedback from a professional adjudicator. It was the first year that each of the Beerburrum students has begun playing, so being able to take the stage alongside much older and more experienced musicians was a significant achievement. The adjudicator provided some great suggestions and said that she had enjoyed the performance. The certificate of participation is now proudly on display at the school. Glenview students rocked ‘Breakthru’
With more schools competing than ever before, the ‘Breakthru’ School Music and Dance Competition grand final was held at Sunshine Plaza’s Riverwalk Stage in Maroochydore. A record 570 primary and secondary singers, dancers and musicians from 25 Sunshine Coast schools participated in the four competition heats. Glenview State School took out third place in the primary music category with prize winnings of $1,000 for the school and $500 for students A quarter of the students from Glenview are involved in the Senior Choir under the direction of Mrs Chelsea Harry. Whilst they may be a local school with small numbers, they have a big heart with many passionate kids performing in music groups. The local community turned out in their droves to support the students, and they walked away with 3rd place, and $1,500 dollars prize money. Students were outstanding in their commitment, dramatic presence, execution and made the community very proud indeed.
