Hinterland Kids Daniel is reaching high
Contributed by Kim Fillery, Principal Peachester State School works closely with our students to establish their learning goals and realise their potential. While every child is unique and special and we value each one equally, we would like to celebrate the successes of Daniel [Surname? Kelly?] in year 4. After realising his natural mathematical and musical ability (Daniel taught himself to read music in two weeks over the 2017 Christmas break), Daniel was IQ tested extensively by a series of rigid tests and qualified staff. In a whirlwind of measurements, in most areas Daniel tested as working above a year 11 level. Daniel has since qualified for Mensa, an organisation that provides support to gifted children and their parents through grants, links to resources, online forums and social media groups. In late July, Daniel visited Maleny State High School to look at the different ways they could support his learning. Since then, Daniel has now started
Approved soccer training for kids aged 18 months - 7 years studying senior year 11 maths B and C, STEAM and music at Maleny SHS, and is managing to keep up with and, in some cases, exceed his new peers. While his mother, Mary Kelly, reports his maths book looks like something out of Good Will Hunting, Daniel is really enjoying the new challenges. Thank you so much to our friends at Maleny SHS. Indigenous author and artist Gregg Dreise recently made a return visit to Beerburrum State School. Earlier in the year Gregg and the school’s students created our Indigenous mural. On his recent visit Gregg spoke to the students about bush tucker as depicted in the mural and showed the students various hunting, food gathering and fire making tools. He also taught the students an Indigenous hunting game that determines which children our ready to join the adults when they go hunting.

The office of the eSafety Commissioner has a very helpful website with information for all types of online activities. It includes a special area just for parents to help them ensure their children have a safe and enjoyable online experience. You can find it www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent. Many social media sites such as Facebook also have safety centres to help users understand how their data are viewed and accessed. If you use social media don’t just assume that the pre-set security settings are suitable for you or your child. Take the time during Child Protection Week to inform yourself. Assess your child’s online behaviour and talk to them about who they talking to.

Bringing nature and art together The talented Karen Shaw from Forest Heart Nursery in Maleny is hosting some great small group workshops for the kids to put their creative energy to good use these school holidays. Kokedama balls: Learn how to make these beautiful moss balls using native plants. All materials are provided at the workshop on Wednesday, September 26 from 10–11am. Cost is $20 each. Indigo tie dyed t-shirts: On Friday, September 28 from 10–11am create a unique piece of artwork and something you can wear as well as learning about the ancient process of indigo dying. Silkworm stories Nature provides an incredible wealth of wonder and learning opportunities for adults and children alike, and recently children and staff at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre were thrilled to welcome hundreds of teeny tiny silkworms to the centre. Following the launch of the ‘Bush Kindy’ program, centre coordinator Dee McCaan and the team have been keen to further develop opportunities for the children and their families to experience naturebased learning and ‘green play’. Thanks to local resident Margaret Voigt who donated to the centre a magical shoebox filled with hundreds of tiny silkworms. Margaret kindly supplies local schools and child care centres with these captivating creatures free of charge to help share the wonder of the evolving life cycle of the silkworm. Opening the shoe box supplied by Margaret, the staff discovered hundreds of teeny tiny silkworms hungrily devouring some mulberry leaves. The staff excitedly placed them into a small tank for the children to see and the centre’s silkworm journey began. Dee says that this amazing donation has created great interest for the staff, children and families and has given everyone a wonderful learning experience. “The staff at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre pride themselves on being able to provide the children with experiences that give them the opportunity to explore their environment, and being able to watch the silkworms grow and change is certainly providing that,” Dee says.
Of course, having so many silkworms meant that a seemingly endless supply of mulberry leaves was needed to keep them fed and healthy. A call out was sent to the wonderful families at the centre and within a couple of days they came through with ‘silkworm food’. These families are regularly bringing in bags of leaves that are fed to the silkworms by the children. “The silkworms have a voracious appetite and are growing at a ridiculous rate. We have set up a silkworm observation area with magnifying glasses so the children can closely study them. This area also has a lot of information about the life cycle of the silk moth and pictures of this cycle so the children can compare the different stages of maturity,” Dee says. This incredible opportunity has already provided a wealth of knowledge and interest for both staff members and the centre’s children and families. For example, did you know that the total life cycle of a silk moth ranges from 6-8 weeks and that the silk moth cannot fly even though it has four wings? The children have also learnt that over thousands of years silkworms have become domesticated through human interaction and now depend on man-made habitats to survive.
Committed to encouraging ‘green play’ over ‘screen play’ and promoting values of sustainability and environmental awareness, the centre will be extending its learning opportunities to include upcoming projects focussing on some interesting areas of engagement including how worm farms work, the life of guinea pigs and frogs, and how compost bins can help the environment by reducing waste and enriching soil. The centre would welcome more donations of mulberry leaves and is also on the lookout for larger fish or reptile tanks in which to transfer the growing silkworms before they begin to spin their cocoons.
