Show your support for Tamika Milgate, Kerri Park and Tiffany Cook who are walking 60 kilometres, between Beerwah and Caloundra and then back again to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer. They plan to complete the walk at the Beerwah Hotel late in the afternoon. There will be a sausage sizzle from 2.00pm and raffles, so show your support and head down to congratulate them.

Caloundra and District Model Railway Association Sale and Display Day will be held at the Caloundra Arts Centre Association building, corner of North Street Caloundra from 9.15am to 2.00pm. The only problem I can see is working out which events we can go to, with so many things happening at the same time, it is definitely going to be tricky. You may notice that in my introduction I referred to the events going through until November 2 which is not stated on the program – but the event organisers were keen to be able to include the festival day happening at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club – which is expected to be huge. Glass House local wins go-kart state title It is all go for up-and-coming kart star Clem O’Mara, who took out the Queensland Closed State Titles at Whitsunday Raceway at the weekend. The Glass House Mountains local claimed pole position starts and first place finishes in each of the three pre-final races in the TAG 125 Heavy class. Maintaining his prime position throughout the 16 lap final race, the 20-year-old led the grid across the finish line to secure the most sought-after spot on the podium.

The event also saw him smash the track’s existing lap record by more than half a second. Clem considers his four win hat-trick one of his biggest achievements in his three year karting career. “It’s the first time I’ve done so well racing at a foreign track and it’s also a first for Whitsunday Raceway. Never has a karter taken out so many consecutive wins in a single championship at that track,” he said. “I placed second in these same titles at Bundaberg last year, so I’m proud to have gone one better this time. It’s been a good year for me, but I’m putting it all down to hard work.” This year has also seen O’Mara secure several podium placings in the Protour series and qualify second in Australia at the national titles in Puckapunyal held in August. He hopes his winning streak will continue into the first round of the 2014 ProTour series at Albury later this month.

Fundraising auction for Kenyan Orphanage Two high school students from Mooloolah, James and Rachel Cran and their friends Josh, a local builder, and his sister Kirra, a University student, are on a fundraising mission. They will join with a group from the Caloundra Presbyterian church and travel to Agape Hope Orphanage for a month in January to improve the facilities for the 85 children living there. A local Kenyan couple began the orphanage after seeing the need to care for and give a loving home for the children they saw living on the streets of the slum. They also began a school on the same site for another 300 children to give them a hopeful future to break the poverty cycle, despite receiving no funding. The four have already paid for their tickets, however they are undertaking fundraising for the costs of the building works. Roys Road and Bells Creek Road works to commence Work will soon start on a new Bruce Highway interchange to replace the Roys Road and Bells Creek Road intersections.

“Work will start this month and take about 18 months to complete, weather permitting,” Mr McArdle said. “Day and night works will be required to complete the upgrade. Traffic control will be in place during the works, including traffic controllers, reduced speed limits and construction signs to safeguard drivers and workers. “This is an important project for locals and other highway users, so we thank everyone in advance for their patience and cooperation while works are carried out.”

In February this year, GCNews reported that the previous federal government’s Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Mr Anthony Albanese announced the allocation of $80.7 million to improve the safety and functionality of the intersections. New member for Fisher, Mr Mal Brough, broke the ground to signify the start of the project last Friday. “The new interchange will be located 200 metres south of the existing Bells Creek intersection,” Mr Brough said. “It includes a two-lane overpass over the highway near the Bells Creek Road intersection and new northbound and southbound entry and exit ramps. “The upgrade will also provide local road connections to Roys, Bells Creek and Dianella Roads and a bridge over Mellum Creek,” he said. The project will also see a 4.5 kilometre stretch of the highway pavement be replaced to improve the road. Caloundra MP Mr Mark McArdle said the state government would deliver the works on behalf of the federal government.

History of our newest district park Last week, we brought you the great news that the recreation park network of Glass House Mountains had grown substantially with the acquisition by Sunshine Coast Council of the four hectare block at the rear of Club Glass House. The block – formally known as Lot 48 Dana Close – was purchased by Council from long time locals Gordon and Gloria Lawrie. After 45 years of their careful stewardship, Gordon and Gloria are pleased to be handing over their reigns to Council for the land which surrounds the lakes and contains a pathway from Dana Close to Gardner Street. “In 1968 when we purchased the land, it was a ‘melon-hole swamp’ covered with an almost impenetrable growth of feral pines, groundsel bush and lantana,” explained Gordon.

“The small island waterhole provided water for household use as well as irrigation for a small orchard. The house was located on Sahara Road where the Lawries lived, and the orchard was a small avocado lot on the farm they owned at the time, which were originally soldier settlement blocks. The Lawries soon expanded their avocado orchard and so needed more irrigation water. “Over the following years, the storage was increased to keep pace with the expansion of the orchard,” said Gordon. “By the 1980’s two waterholes had been constructed, however in doing so, a large amount of spoil had been stockpiled in the adjacent area. “This was both environmentally and aesthetically unsatisfactory, so the decision was taken to clear all the feral species from the lot and relocate the

Both Gordon and Gloria were biology teachers in their professional lives and nature lovers at heart, so the next stage in the history of 48 Dana Close comes as no surprise. “At the time we decided to join the two waterholes and to create designer islands to provide sanctuary and breeding sites for water birds. “The design and subsequent landscape plantings were accomplished with the assistance and advice of many of our environmentalist and birdwatching friends. “In the early 1990’s, we constructed the footpath to allow safe access to Coonowrin Road for our children and others, as the footpath over the dangerous Railway Parade crossing did not exist at this time. “The basic design of this area has not changed, with the exception of the removal of many of our eucalypt plantings as this was beginning to pose a bushfire threat to the township and local houses.” The care that the Lawries have shown for the land means that they have left an enduring legacy for all locals to share and enjoy.

“We hope in time and as resources become available, Council will add infrastructure to allow this central parkland to be utilised and appreciated by all residents and visitors to Glass House Township,” Gordon proudly said.

Funding for local Clubs Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle has announced the allocation of $192,038 for eight local community groups from State Government funding. Three of the organisations within the Caloundra electorate to receive funding in this round of the Jupiters Casino Community Benefit Fund and the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, are in Glasshouse Country. • Suncoast Hinterland Softball Association • Glasshouse Country Horse and Pony Club Inc. • Glasshouse and Districts Little Athletics Centre The funding allocations will assist these community groups with a range of necessary equipment and infrastructure improvements required to allow them to continue the great work they do for our community. Karen Robe, Suncoast Hinterland Softball Association Coordinator is elated that the

association’s grant application was successful. “Our Mooloolah based association was seeing membership numbers plummet due to poor facilities. We simply couldn’t compete with other associations who had better facilities and equipment and members were travelling away from our local facilities to use their facilities. “The funding we have received from State Government has allowed us to improve our facilities dramatically by investing in back-nets and dugouts. The latest grant will allow us to construct covered grandstands,” Mrs Robe said. “We are launching our new summer season and hosting the Grand Opening of our fresh-faced facility on October 12, and we are hoping to see memberships increase as a result of this funding.” “These grants are designed for approved notfor-profit organisations and are not intended to replace existing sources of support for these organisations,” Mr McArlde said.

Steaming through Glasshouse Country The Australian Railway Historical Society (Queensland Division) has been operating rail tours for over 50 years and on Saturday, October 19 they will be part of the Glasshouse Country Festival. Locals will notice the area come alive with the sounds of steam and BB 18¼ locomotive 1089 and the 1910 built heritage carriages as they bring visitors from Brisbane for the day. There will be local trips available from Glass House Mountains or Landsborough to Mooloolah and return. Departure time from Glass House Mountains will be 10.55am and from Landsborough 11.20am.

There will also be a shorter local trip from Landsborough to Glass House Mountains at 1.10pm and from Glass House to Landsborough and return at 2.00pm. Vale Bernie O’Mara Bernie was born in Caboolture on September 24, 1932 and passed away on September 24, 2013, aged 81 years exactly. Right from a very young age, Bernie had no fear of hard work. When he was eight-years old, he delivered newspapers on his push bike before and after school all over Caboolture and to the American soldier’s camp located at the showgrounds. When he left school he was employed as a lad porter at the Caboolture Railway Station and then at the age of 17 was transferred to Blackwater for 18 months, and there he became a night officer. He was then transferred to the Glass House station, where many long-time locals would remember him from, later he become the station master there. In total he worked for the railway for 49 years and nine months. He enjoyed his time at the Glass House Mountains station and this is where he first met his lovely and devoted wife Jill. Jill caught the train daily from Glass House to Beerwah to work at Brown and Broad Sawmill located in Simpson Street, now where the fruit growers co-op is. She would see Bernie twice a day depending on which shift he was on. They courted for four years before marrying on September 7, 1957 at St Andrews Church in South Brisbane and spent the next 56 wonderful years together. Always planning for the future, he purchased a two acre block of land for a new home.

He was a great source of information for anyone wanting to know anything about the area as he knew so much about local history. He had such a unique way of telling how it was and capturing your attention. As well as being interested in history Bernie was a sport fanatic. He played cricket, football, tennis, soccer, golf and whatever else was going. Every sport he played he was good at and if he wasn’t participating, he would be watching it. He would have been really proud to see his grandson Clem on the cover this week, after such great success in his chosen sport of go-karting.

‘Changing times’ This was the first brick house with a tiled roof in Glasshouse and they have lived there since. Bernie and Jill had three children, Cheryl, Paul and Renae and eight grandchildren – Sarah, Kate, Laura, Ellen, James, Emma, Clem and little Grace. He was very proud of each and every one of them. When asked how his grandchildren were going he would start with a smile. He was a strong supporter of their sporting, academic and cultural activities and always interested to know what they were up to. He was interested in history and always enjoyed reminiscing about the old times and having a yarn about how things were back then. He took great pride in showing everyone his railway memorabilia collection and particularly enjoyed demonstrating his morse code set at the Beerwah Charity Sports.

When Bernie at age 8 worked delivering papers he was paid 8 shillings per week and the price of a paper was two pence. One day the shop owner’s wife called him to the office and told him that she had heard he was keeping tips given to him by the soldiers. Unbeknown to the shop owner, he had been stashing the tips on the headstocks under the Lagoon Creek Bridge. Unfortunately for Bernie he didn’t get all of them back. More than 30 years later, in 1970, construction workers repairing the bridge found Bernie’s collection of coins and wondered how they got there. It would seem that on really hot days, the tar from the bitumen road on top would melt and drip down onto the headstocks, sticking Bernie’s tips to the timbers.

Landsborough is known as the Sunshine Coast’s Historic Town, and the celebration of William Landsborough Day on Saturday, October 19 will incorporate some good old fashioned Australian culture. To capture the spirit of days gone by, event organisers are encouraging visitors to come dressed in their favorite colonial fashions. You will feel like you’ve stepped back into the days of old with the arrival of the steam train just after 11.00am at the Landsborough railway station. What may surprise the crowds is that Ned Kelly will be arriving on the train, with Ross Price (AKA William Landsborough) along with his theatre group Black Grail Productions, who will perform a comical reenactment of the capture and sentencing of Ned Kelly. If you are close to the action you might even be called on to help William Landsborough’s constables track Ned down! The day runs from 9.00am – 3.00pm and Railway Park will be buzzing with old fashioned market stalls, music and festivities. You can also take a short walk to the museum where there will be discounted entry, a barbeque and some exciting displays. The Beerwah Ladies Golf Club recently presented Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade representative, Mr Dennis Hume, with a cheque for $1000.00, proceeds from their recent Charity Invitation Day. They had 101 golfing ladies travel from near and far for this event, and funds were raised by selling ‘get out of trouble’ coupons, one of which involved Chris Mellish, one of the course professionals, hitting drives off the 15th tee all day. Gwen and her friend Val Inglis (centre of back row) started a group playing the game of mah jong over 15 years ago. Over the years, our players have increased and now 15 friends regularly challenge each other to the game every fortnight in the Neighbourhood Centre at Glasshouse. Gwen hopes to return to catch up with her friends in the future, and of course her visits will be on ‘mah jong’ day. If it is good enough for the White House, then why not do the same? Back in 2010, President Obama made a commitment to renewable energy and said he would eventually install solar panels in the White House. But now it’s actually happening. The project was done in part to demonstrate that historic buildings can incorporate solar energy and energy efficiency upgrades. Twenty to 50 solar panels will be retrofitted and should, by estimates, pay for itself in savings in just eight years. Climate activists, such as Bill McKibben of a solar advocacy group called 350.org, are thrilled.

But President Obama is not the first White House denizen to ‘go solar.’ In fact, President Carter installed 32 panels in the 1970's to heat the White House’s water. In 1986, President Reagan took the solar panels down. But then President George W. Bush, in 2003, put in a photovoltaic system in addition to two thermal units to warm the swimming pool in the White House. In the decades since, solar technology has diversified and expanded in remarkable new directions. Plus, the cost of solar energy has plummeted down to 97% of what it was back in 1979.

University of Queensland (UQ) installed 5000 solar panels on campus UQ has also gone solar by installing 1.22 megawatts of solar on the roofs of the School of Mathematics and Physics campus. The 1.22 megawatt system is almost 25% larger than any other rooftop system in Australia, with the added complexity of being split between four buildings. UQ has installed more than 5,000 polycrystalline silicon solar panels across four building roofs; on two multi-story car parks, the UQ Centre and the Sir Llew Edwards building. In total, they cover a space equivalent to one-and-a-half rugby fields. A 6 x 7 metre 8.4 kilowatt CPV tracking array has also been placed near the car parks to research another form of solar power technology. The UQ solar system generates its own performance data

streamed directly onto the internet and can be viewed by anyone with an interest in solar power. This data will be particularly useful for UQ’s many different researchers and will be an interesting ‘live’ display for visitors to the university. UQ has great confidence in solar as it is also installing more PV solar panels, they are scheduled to be installed across the university, to complement the smaller arrays already located at Heron Island and Gatton. UQ will continue to work with the State Government Department of Energy on sustainable energy projects. Energex will also be working with UQ to plan how electricity storage can best be utilised within the distribution network.

How much greenhouse gas emissions will the UQ system save? Around 1750 tonnes of CO2 annually, this is about the same as taking 335 cars off the road each year. The system will generate around six percent of UQ St Lucia’s average peak demand annual electricity usage.

Strong Families, Safe City The Suncoast Church has a vision that they hold dearly – Strong Families, Safe City. In support of that vision their Safe City project is held every year to practically contribute to a state school community by filling any gap left by budget shortfalls. Caloundra Family History Research Contributed by Sue Brownjohn Dr Jon Prangnell, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the School of Social Science, UQ, was welcomed back to Caloundra at the September meeting, when his topic was ‘Archaeological Investigations at All Hallows Convent in Ann Street, Brisbane’. In his most informative and interesting presentation, he explained the excavations were conducted in the Old Bleach, to find the location of the original grave sites of the first nuns at the convent who are now buried at Nudgee Cemetery. These were found, along with evidence for the use of the place before the Catholic Church bought it.

Investigations were also undertaken into the contents of two reliquaries. Also at the September General Meeting, member Betty Hadland was presented with a Loyalty Award by President June Blackburn for her 20 years membership. Their ability to continue to service you is dependent on the support you give them. We know you can’t always walk into a local store and purchase exactly what you want. Why not? It is all about turnover. When a small business owner sets up in Glasshouse Country they do three things, invest considerable capital into establishing a new business to provide a service to you, they also take the punt that you will support them, they offer you a partnership in the business by providing a service to you and for you to support them. This commitment from a new business is to demonstrate a high level of trust in the community. One thing for sure is they intend to provide you with the highest level of service possible that the new venture can provide. A business can advertise stock! It is not possible to advertise everything they can supply. This is where the partnership comes in, you need to know what your local supplier can supply, you will be surprised how competitive they are and how soon they can have it in store for you. They can even save you time and fuel. The chamber has committed funding to a ‘Shop Local 1st’ campaign, inviting you to support local businesses. Watch out for hijackers, inside your computer! We have seen quite a few Internet Browsing issues lately. The most common issue is Browser Hijacking. This normally means that your homepage has changed, and you may have a new home page with a search bar, which can look an awful lot like Google. It may be harmless and easily fixed (by going into settings and changing it back) or it can be down right nasty, denying you access to real searches and taking you to the same shopping or download sites. This can be across all installed browsers too (by browsers we mean Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera etc.). The more aggressive hijacks can take quite a bit of sorting out, and can prove very frustrating. Even your shortcut (the icon you click on to open your browser) can be tainted, and have a bit of code added in there to take you off to the wrong site. You may also be subject to annoying pop ups and warnings of imminent PC failure. Ultimately this can spoil your browsing, slow it down or can stop it all together. If you find yourself in this situation and you (or your mate who's handy with these things) can't solve it, get your local IT professional to help you out. Don't download yet another ‘Speed Up My PC’ program or you will just dig a deeper hole. To prevent this from happening in the first place, be extremely careful what you download, and what you agree to when down-loading. I've recently seen a couple of PC's that have so many browser ‘Add-Ons’ installed that they take up half the monitor! Although a lot of these types of downloads act like Malware, they aren't considered to be Malware, and after all, you agreed to it. If in doubt, keep it out.....

Consider the negatives I often see business owners who are concerned that they are pumping too much money into Google AdWords advertising, and not seeing their return on investment. Because of this exact reason, I will generally recommend that before people go spending a cent on AdWords, they first worry about their ORGANIC search engine optimisation, such as keyword usage, great textual content, and a professional appeal which gives them the best chance of converting leads into sales. There’s certainly a time and a place for Google Advertising, however. Once you have a website which converts, and a solid content and social media strategy, then the next logical step to increase traffic to your website is Google Adwords... but how do you ensure that your valuable dollars aren’t eaten up in one swift gulp? One effective method is to use NEGATIVE keywords. We’ve all heard of keywords - these are the words and phrases that we want to be associated with, so that people typing these words will find us in Google. Negative keywords, on the other hand, are those words that we DO NOT want to be found for. For example, a sign-writing business might have keywords of 'signs' and 'signage' but the perfect negative keywords for such a business might be 'astrology' and 'astrological' - they don’t want to waste their money being clicked by people searching for starsigns! Considering these factors, and entering both positive and negative keywords when creating a Google Ad, can really help in keeping your budgeted advertising money from draining too quickly.

The urbanisation of the lower Mooloolah River is starting to show signs of degradation and shallowing. Landslips at the headwaters of Mooloolah River produce tons of soil and sandstone sediments amongst other overland pollutants that flow down the river towards the ocean. These overland sediments have been accentuated with the large rain events we have had over the last few years. MRWL water quality monitoring shows that Mooloolah River tends to bounce back from these extreme events to a reasonably healthy river when everything settles down. From the headwaters of Mooloolah River to Parrearra canal there is quite beautiful rainforest and mangroves along most of the banks and this helps the river to maintain a healthy eco-system. Last week as I was canoeing down the river I was shocked to see that a large sand bar has formed in the middle of the river around 18 metres long across the river and around 15 metres wide and two feet out of the water directly opposite Parrearra canal. When Parrearra canal was being developed, MRWL spoke to the engineers and other people involved in the process of developing the weir. My concern was that the design would cause the river to divert to the weir causing a whirlpool effect with sand dump into the river. I was told that the engineering has taken into account floods and flows and there will be no damage to the river. How this silt build up will affect the river is unknown at this stage but boats going up and down the river need to be aware of this sand bar. If anyone has any information regarding the river please contact Jan on 0407 641 327 so we can keep tabs on the changes happening. I would like to see Mooloolah River stay a healthy and intact eco-system and I am extremely worried about the accelerating silt build up in the river bed along the entire Mooloolah River system.

Soon we will be celebrating the Glass House Country Festival. A varied and interesting range of events are scheduled for this inaugural festival. Many GMAN members are keen bush walkers with a love of the natural environment. They are keen to inspire others to share their interest in the flora and fauna of our iconic area during a series of bush walks over the period of the festival. The walks involve a range of vegetation types, terrain and plant species. The Scientific area at Beerwah, a small but precious remaining section of Wallum, has a wonderful range of plant species, all but lost from the local area. This area needs our protection and until recently was not open to the public but used for scientific purposes only. Sadly, some trail bike riders, those vandals of the forest, have discovered the area and in recent months have created incredible damage. The Beerwah Scientific area and Tibrogargan Circuit are both short walks but are vastly different. The latter has great views, some easy climbs and uncommon plants not seen outside the National Parks. For the little more adventurous, join our guides for the two longer walks both approximately six kilometres. The Trachyte Circuit was built by GMAN members during the Centenary of Federation year. Learn something of the history of this track, one of the greatest achievements of the group. The final walk from the historic Beerburrum Cemetery links to the Trachyte walk. Both walks traverse open forest and wetland with great views and a wide range of local flora. Join us on one of these walks so we can inspire you with a love for our local environment.

Green waste craziness

It is with great mirth and confusion that I read in your last issue that ‘Council scraps compulsory green waste bin’. I am a supporter and frequent user of the Beerwah Recycling Centre. Trish, Terry and all of the wonderful staff that work there do a fantastic job at what is a beaut community and environmentally sound concept. The idea of bringing in green waste to be shredded and re-used as mulch is to be applauded as a terrific example of environmental management. However, as of July 1 this year there was an incredibly horrendous price increase. A load that was $8.00 is now $15.00, a load that was $12.00 is now $20.00! As you can see this represents an increase of approximately 80 - 90%! I decided to make my complaint known to council by phoning them, only to be told that ‘it is a decision that was made by councillors at the last meeting’. Fair enough I think to myself, Rick Baberowski is my local councillor, I will call him. Upon ringing the councillor’s office (twice) I spoke with his assistant who informed me that “green waste bins will be introduced to all residents within council radius and why don’t I order one of them?” Am I the only confused resident in the Hinterland who thinks that we are getting ‘stung’ by these new charges and a ‘hands thrown in the air’ approach to green waste? The alternative I now have is to store my terribly expensive green waste and await a suitable day for burning which I’m sure defeats the whole purpose of environmental responsibility. Surely Council can reconsider the current stance and place a more reasonable charge upon the green waste recyclers within the community? Graham Anstis Glass House Mountains

Walk to the platform and look towards your destination being either the Nambour or Brisbane line. There are red and green signals similar to traffic lights on the track. Not happy

Last Wednesday night, our family decided to have a night at the Beerwah RSL which we have supported since it re-opened. It has always been a value-formoney night out, especially with times quite tough financially for everyone. We were surprised to find that the RSL changed the menu again and much to our disgust the prices on the new menu look to have gone UP at least 20%. I seem recollect in last week’s GCNews they have a new chef although we didn’t stay to find out. I agree fully that business must be profitable or they close, but to raise prices this much is not right. I feel sorry for the elderly in our area who enjoy a day out at the local RSL. Several local long term businesses have recently gone from the Beerwah area and it looks like the Good Value Night at your local RSL has gone as well.

Hopefully with the push on shopping and supporting local business in your area, other business in this industry will realise they have a very captive market and look to offer good value at a reasonable price to ensure their business survives and keeps people shopping locally. Re: 'Blatant Lies' questionnaire

I respond to Peter Bowles contribution to GCNews in the September 25 edition. During the last million years, as Earth’s climate was oscillating between glacial and interglacial states, atmospheric CO2 naturally varied between 180 and 280 ppm, however, its content in the atmosphere is now reaching values unprecedented in human times. Since the 18th century, human activities have released more CO2 into the atmosphere, volumes that in May 2012 reached the 400 ppm milestone. Now I am prepared to agree with Peter Bowles and other anthropogenic climate change deniers that human activities have not contributed to the increased levels of CO2, provided that they can explain one thing that has me completely baffled. That is, what natural phenomena occurred from the time of the Industrial Revolution up until May 2012 to cause the level of CO2 to rise from 280 ppm to 400 ppm (and rising)? The information supplied by Peter to back up his argument can be accessed by contacting any think tank backed by the oil, petroleum, chemical, tobacco and mining industry websites available through Google. It is in their interest and the interest of their shareholders to fight, however, I believe that we owe the earth the benefit of the doubt. Lawrie Jurd Lawson NSW

Last week I posed a number of questions, below is my abridged responses that I have taken from a paper published by an eminently qualified scientist. I am not a scientist, but my responses are based on the scientific evidence in the paper, and a little research of my own. What % of the air is CO2? CO2 is less than a mere four 100ths of 1%, as a decimal it is 0.0038%, as a fraction it is 1/27th of 1%. Have you ever seen a percentage of CO2 given by the media? No, they are interested in sensationalism, not science. What % of CO2 do humans produce? Humans produce 0.001% of the CO2 in the air, it is so miniscule that it equates to one molecule in every 90,000 air molecules. What % of man-made CO2 does Australia produce? 1% of the 0.001% of man-made CO2, as a decimal it is 0.00001% of the air, that is one, one-hundred thousandth of the air. It has no effect on the atmosphere whatsoever. Is CO2 a pollutant? CO2 is a harmless trace gas, it is necessary for life, just as oxygen and nitrogen are. It is a natural gas that is clear, tasteless, and odourless; it is in no way a pollutant. Have you seen any evidence that CO2 causes a Green House effect? There is no proof, the

Out of touch Councilor

In the GCNews edition of October 2, Cr Rick Baberowski said expansion of the Village Fair Shopping centre in Beerwah demonstrates the strength of business confidence and growth in the region. Can I point out to Councilor Rick that what it demonstrates is the lack of understanding of small business on his behalf? There are empty shops down the entire main street of Beerwah because they are struggling to make ends meet. The shops that were in that village are now gone and not to return because they aren’t going to pay three times the rent they did before in a town that is being squeezed by the big guys when they are already struggling. I run two businesses in Landsborough and speak to many Beerwah business operators and they can only laugh at the idea ‘business confidence and growth’ is being demonstrated at the moment. The truth is as obvious as the empty shops in Beerwah. They are struggling councilor Rick Baberowski, and it’s time you think about your actions. Council has just replaced shop rentals that are at rural town rent prices with unaffordable shop rentals at city / coastal prices. If local small business is struggling then I pose the question to Rick. How would more expensive rentals and the introduction of more bigger business, which means unfair competition for the small guy, help? Council use business as cash cows only to reward them with hurt. I’m pleased to see Beerwah businesses have banded together and recently started a local campaign, Shop Local 1st - Beerwah, encouraging residents to shop in their own backyard. I think this is a great initiative and in the past have always been a big advocate of living local and shopping local. Beerwah is undergoing a major facelift for the near future, particularly with the $5 million upgrade to Simpson Street (a joint State Government and Council initiative). October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Research from Cancer Australia shows breast cancer is the most common cancer among women across the country and the majority of cases are women aged 40 - 69. Look who got married

On December 15 last year, former Beerwah High student Coral Manson of Beerburrum married Ashley Stones from Newcastle, New South Wales. The wedding was held locally at the Marae Gardens Wedding Chapel in Beerburrum and the reception was held at the Beerburrum Hall. The day turned out to be a beautiful day to walk down the garden isle. If some of you don’t know, Coral lost movement in her right leg after an appendix operation in 2009. She struggled to walk for eight months and had a reaction to medications the doctors were giving her, which seemed to set her back each time. Her mother Raquel had to massage her leg three times a day to keep the nerve alive. Throughout Coral’s sickness, she would help coach the Junior Under 10 Glasshouse Touch Football team. Her leg would be placed in a sling which was tied to a belt and she’d get around on crutches. Coral was always determined to keep going and never let anything stop her from doing what she loved. Thanks to the persistence of the physiotherapist at Caloundra Public Hospital, the team were able to get Coral up and moving again, just in time for Christmas 2010. Raquel said they were thankful for all the support they received through this rough time. “We would like to thank the businesses, local clubs and community support, which made a big difference to our daily lives,” she said. Now it’s been over six months since Coral walked down the aisle and started her married life, enjoying walking and being with her wonderful husband, Ashley. It just goes to show - never give up!

The Sunshine Girls will be putting the fun in ‘fundraiser’ on Saturday, October 26 when their members and friends take to the catwalk for a ‘fashion parade’ showing just what great assets a ‘pre-loved’ fashion garment, handbag or shoes can be. They will be combining this with a lovely two course lunch to be held at the Glasshouse Community Hall, so why not grab a friend and share in the afternoon’s fun, starting at 12.00noon. The lines between fiction and reality become blurred as Germain conspires with Claude to continue his essays built around an unknowing family’s daily home life. There is always one verse in the bible that stops me like a sledge hammer every time I read it. It says: ‘the heart is more deceitful than all else, and is desperately sick; Who can understand it? I Lord search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, according to the results of his deeds.' Jeremiah 17:9 In the original language instead of using the word heart it said our kidneys are deceitful. And Jeremiah says our hearts deceive us to make us even sicker. I have a friend who has just had a heart attack. She felt fine; she didn’t even know she was sick - until all of a sudden the heart attack hit her. Her literal heart deceived her. Jeremiah is not talking about flesh and blood hearts he is talking about our spiritual hearts. Spiritually our hearts deceive us - and they deceive toward spiritual sickness. The trouble with being deceived is you don’t

know you are deceived until the damage is done. That’s what it’s like for us spiritually we don’t know there is any damage, we don’t know we are sick, until it’s too late. Our hearts tells us things like we are ok with God because we are good people, or that it’s Ok to do what we want, and sometimes it’s OK to follow our hearts. But God says he knows he searches the heart. God is if you like the original heart doctor and God warns us against just listening to our hearts - instead we should listen to the heart specialist and follow His advice because he knows best. And the doctor of the heart says we need help; that, if we keep following our hearts we are going to end up profoundly spiritually sick. The trouble is we all feel so good. We feel great and we certainly don’t feel sick - yet that is what the doctor of the heart says - and if we don’t pay attention to what God says, then eventually even our deceptive hearts will catch up with us and then …. We are told to follow our hearts or be true to our hearts. Woody Allen summed it up this way when he was talking about a controversial relationship he was involved in “the heart wants what the heart wants.” God says don’t listen to your heart no matter what you think of how you feel, instead listen to me for I am the true heart doctor. Christmas break-up this year is on Wednesday, December 11 at the Good Old Days Shoppe, Peachester. Pam and John Innes spoke about the highlights of their visit to celebrate Friendship Day at the Aspley Garden Club. Pam and John were presented with a certificate thanking them on behalf of the P.D.H.S for their help on tree planting day at the Peachester S.S held in July. Results of the competition bench for August: 1st Cath Howitt 15 points, 2nd Joan Kropp 12 points. After the meeting, members travelled to the Maleny Botanical Gardens. We enjoyed lunch, then spent a couple of hours exploring. It was a very hot day and the magnificent views were almost hidden in bad haze, however the gardens themselves are well worth seeing. They are a wonderful asset to Maleny and surrounding areas and will only improve over years to come. It was an enjoyable finish to the day. This strangely named plant has stunningly beautiful flushes of deep red / pink new growth throughout the year. Its foliage is very dense and it has an attractive wavy edge. It has small white flowers that bear unusual purple pumpkin shaped fruit. The Roly Poly Satinash occurs naturally in the wet tropical rainforests between Townsville and Cooktown. In full sun in SE QLD it is a bushy shrub / small tree to 5m but in a forest situation it will compete for light and be at least twice this size. This is a highly ornamental plant that has a place in any garden and also makes a great pot specimen. SunCoast Hinterland Softball to celebrate new facilities with Official Opening Suncoast Hinterland Softball Association will celebrate the Official Opening of its new facilities funded by the State Government on Saturday, October 12. The new facilities, which include backnets and dugouts, received funding of $99,465.00 thanks to the State Government’s National Parks, Recreation, Sport and racing ‘Get Playing’ program. Celebrations, which will be held in conjunction with the Association’s Summer Season commencement, will be held at Mooloolah

Valley Multi Sports Complex at 129 Mooloolah Connection Road, Mooloolah. The event will hit off at 9.30am -10.30am and see the Honourable Steve Dickson, Minister for National Parks, Recreations, Sport and Racing, open the new facilities along with other dignitaries in attendance including Cr Tim Dwyer and Cr Jenny McKay of the Sunshine Coast Council. The Honourable Steve Dickson will throw the first ball of an exhibition match by the Association’s U10’s, marking the commencement of the season.

The medal is played in three divisions and each division is sponsored by our Club Professional, John Mellish. The winner of Division 1 was Sonia Kenway who came in with a nice score of 70 Nett, followed by Mavis Brimelow who was runner up on 73 Nett. Gross winner in Div 1 was Lea Garner with an 85 off the stick. Division 2 winner with a Nett score of 70 was Cath Cherry, followed by Marie Goyder on 71 Nett. Lesley Eggleston won the Gross with 92 off the stick. The Division 3 winner was Gail Murphy with 74 Nett, runner up on a count back

was Liz Flavell, also with 74 Nett. Joyce Turner scored 108 off the stick to win the Gross in Division 3. Nearest to the pin on number 2 went to Marie Goyder, Debs Rutherford was closest on the 5th, the 16th was a skinner and Sonia took out the 18th. Kaye Jansen was the best putter on the day with just 26 putts. The ball rundown went to 76Nett. The Medal of Medalists will be decided in two weeks when all the winners from throughout the year will play a single event and the best score on the day will be declared the Medal of Medalists for 2013. Let's hope this lovely weather holds out for them.
