O
n Saturday morning we headed along to the QCWA Spring Fair at the Tower Green at Beerwah, which I have to describe as one of the hottest events I have been too in a while and when I say hot, I am definitely not meaning hot and sexy. I just mean that the weather on day the day was sweltering, and I found myself thanking the lovely CWA ladies profusely for a plastic cup of water – like it was one of their delicious Devonshire teas! I imagine on Saturday morning that anyone with a swimming pool might have been tempted to just lock the front gate and hop into the pool for the day, so it was wonderful to see just how many people came along to support the event. I have to say for me one of the highlights was having the opportunity to meet the real life models who featured in this year’s Vintage Calendar Girls for 2017, and of course to have them autograph the pages they featured in. So, while last Saturday might have been one of the hottest days this spring, there were still plenty of locals who battled the heat and had some fun. Regards,

Local News Spring Fair hits high notes Plenty of enthusiasm and hard work went into creating a fun day out for the whole community at the QCWA’s Spring Fair last Saturday at the Tower Green in Beerwah. With the combined efforts of the Beerwah CWA ladies, and many other local community groups and schools, and market stall holders, there was plenty of activity in and around the CWA Hall and the grassy area around the beautiful old Mango tree. A highlight for many of the proud parents and grandparents was seeing their talented kids performing as part of the days entertainment program. This included entertainment by both the Beerwah State primary and high schools along with the Glasshouse Christian College's Choir and Dance Troupes.

Ella and Graham Reeks are the third lucky winners to be announced in the competition, which offers water and sewerage bills paid for a year, up to a value of $1500.00. The couple, from Mt Mellum near Landsborough, said the win caught them by surprise. “We very rarely win competitions,” Mrs Reeks said. “Now we're planning what we're going to do with the money we'll save! “Having a bit more cash is always handy with a young family. It will ease some of the pressure on our budget and mean we can treat the family more often.” Mrs Reeks said she was also keen to pay the win forward to benefit those less fortunate. “In Australia we take for granted easy, cheap access to clean water, so we're also going to donate a proportion of the money to a charity that helps provide safe water where people aren't so lucky.” There is just one more winner to be drawn in the year-long competition. Cr Jenny McKay recently let GC&M News know that Council has replaced the footbridge over Obi Obi Creek, connecting to Maleny Showgrounds, as the old bridge was heavily corroded. The new structure is a 2.4m wide single span concrete bridge with disability compliant approaches. Stage 1 of this renewal was completed in 2015 – this included construction of both abutment structures and protection of the creek bank. Stage 2 was undertaken in 2016 – this included new bridge decks, approach footpaths, handrails, relocation of trail signage and removal of the old steel and timber bridge. This also included relocation of the Rotary Club sign that was over the old bridge, to recognise the club’s 1993 construction of the old bridge. Cr McKay said she was pleased to join members of Rotary and other community members to mark completion of the new bridge.
Hinterland local Sarah Peters has recently been announced the Australian winner of two category titles in the prestigious ‘National Young Judges Competition’ which was held in Tasmania earlier last month.

national accolades. “It felt amazing to win!” Sarah said. “Now that I’ve won these titles in judging beef and dairy, it means I can now judge local and royal shows as an ‘over judge’.” With the titles held in Launceston carried over from 2015 and pushed back to October this year, Sarah came away with two winning trophies and tri colour sashes. Now Sarah has her sights on developing a beef cattle stud along with her sisters and hopes to follow up on her national wins with competition work overseas.

Sarah has taken out the national judging title in both stud beef cattle and dairy cattle which has never been achieved before! Also known for her competition work riding ‘Paint Horses’, this talented 18 year old enjoys a keen interest in cattle judging and parading that started at a relatively young age. Her interest in the beef cattle industry began when she was a girl of eight and since then she has participated in numerous young judges and parading competitions. In assessing cattle livestock, judges look for ‘carcas attributes’ and profitability. There is a similar selection criteria for dairy cattle judging with the addition of ‘milk quality’ to be considered. In regards to judging dairy cattle, this is a more recent interest for Sarah who began participating in judging events around four years ago. Part of her interest stems from her grandparents’ involvement in the family buffalo stud and dairy farm based in Witta. To win the national awards has involved a lengthy process from winning local competitions to representing at regional level, followed by winning state titles before competing at national level. To be eligible competitors must be aged 25 years and under. In previous years Sarah has won regional awards in dairy cattle judging and this year was lucky enough to win both state and

Australian Motocross Champion times three! Contributed by Wendy Stott
Glasshouse Christian College student 11-year-old Noah Smerdon outclassed the opposition at the Australian Junior Motocross Championships to gain his third Australian title in three years. More than 400 of the top under 16 riders from all over Australia gathered to compete in the event which was held in Renmark, South Australia. Noah rode fantastically, clearly winning all three of his finals. He gained maximum points by starting fast to avoid crashes and riding smart in the tricky track conditions. Noah rides as part of the KTM Australia Junior Motocross team and is the youngest and only Queensland rider in the team. There are only five junior riders in Australia selected in the KTM Team so he is very proud to ride for them. The KTM team sponsors provide an allocation for Noah’s bike, race gear, graphics kits, helmets, oils, tyres and parts budget, so it a very big help to Noah’s family. Noah’s brother Adam also had some great rides during the qualifying rounds on his 85cc and 125cc bikes and qualified comfortably for the finals. Unfortunately he was quite ill but, to his credit, he completed the finals although finished further back in the field due to his illness. The Smerdons are moving to the USA so that Noah can pursue his motocross career. We look forward to hearing their results from America and will be following their exploits there. Glasshouse Christian College is very proud to have a three time National Champion at its school and wish Noah, Adam and the Smerdon team much success in the coming years.

Then we will proceed to the Peachester Hall for a shared lunch. All welcome. Morayfield A Remembrance Day service will be held at Morayfield Shopping Centre in the Centre Atrium commencing at 10.40am. A representative from the Caboolture/Morayfield RSL will be delivering the service and, at exactly 11.00am, the last post will be played, followed by one minute’s silence.

Light Horse Museum opening

On Saturday 28 October, over 150 invited guests and community members attended the official opening of the Beersheba Living Museum located in the Maleny Community Precinct, off Porters Lane. Home of the Fifth Light Horse Regiment Maleny Troop, the museum has been established to recognise the courage and sacrifice of light horsemen and their horses that have served in numerous conflicts over the years, and in particular the charge of the battle of Beersheba. The museum has opened after many years of negotiation and fundraising; with tireless efforts from the committees of the Maleny District Sports and Recreation Club along with the Fifth Light Horse Regiment Maleny Troop working hard to provide a new equestrian focussed centre for the Hinterland. The opening ceremony at 11.00 am was preceded by a 12 piece marching band heralding the event. A director of the Australian Light Horse Association, Laurie Watts was the MC for the ceremony and the guest speakers included Federal, State and local representatives. The opening plaque was unveiled by Major Malcolm from the Second Fourteenth Light Horse Regiment and the ceremony was attended by 16 riders from the Maleny, Woombye, Gympie and Enoggera Troops as well as representatives from Sunshine Coast RSL Clubs. “It was a stunning day and I feel that history was made,” Maleny Troop President Terry Murphy said. “While the building is now ready to be used there is still work to be done. Once fully completed, the

building will be available for all equestrian related events in the area.” The “living museum” demonstrates Australian Light Horse skills and dress. Visitors can come along to the training days and see how the local troop train their horses, put on the equipment (some of which is over 80 years old) and see firsthand how things are done. 25 years of film in Maleny
Twenty-five years of arthouse film screenings in Maleny by volunteers will be celebrated on 13 November from 2.00pm in the Maleny Community Centre, with a local film about Maleny Film Society and rescreening of the society’s first 1991 film selection. The society’s 2016 Honour Roll will celebrate more than 170 volunteers whose efforts over 25 years for Maleny’s cultural community have led to a current membership heading for 400. Maleny Players will add humour to the occasion with skits on film criticism and a nostalgic presentation of ‘I Remember it Well’ from the film Gigi. A filmic celebration cake will be cut by local resident Annie Kelley, who coordinated the catering by a volunteer committee in the early days of the society. The first film screened by the society in November 1991, ‘My Life as A Dog’, will follow a short documentary by local film-maker Jess Begun entitled ‘I Remember When…’, tracing highlights of the society over a quarter of a century.

Millionaire Mindset Great work Ted!
Long-time Mapleton resident Ted McCosker has been awarded an ‘Excellence in Service’ Award recognising his many years of service to the Mapleton community. Due to his inability to travel, Ted was presented with the award by Lions International District Governor Norm Jensen and representatives of the Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range, at the McCosker home. Over the years, Ted held office in several community organisations, including the Mapleton State School P&C, the Rural Fire Brigade and the Progress Association. He lobbied to council to clean up and maintain the Mapleton Cemetery and to install a columbarium, and was instrumental in gaining a Waste Transfer Station for the area. Ted also played a key role in convincing the local council to rezone land adjacent to the primary school so that sporting fields and room for expansion could be provided. Ted modestly jokes that he had the only flatbed truck in the area, so of course he was called upon to ferry chairs and tables around for community events and set up the stage for concerts in the local hall. He has also been known to play a very convincing Santa Claus. Ted has also been involved in MADCA and the Men’s Shed. A conservationist, Ted welcomed the launch of the Land for Wildlife program from his property, which has long been a wildlife haven. Failing health has meant that Ted has had to pull back from volunteer work in recent years. However, it is still Ted McCosker who is sought out by anyone seeking knowledge of Mapleton and its history. Local Lions club president Peter Jensen said Ted McCosker has been an outstanding community volunteer Lions District Governor Norm Jensen presented for over 60 years and the award to Ted McCosker remains an asset to the Mapleton Community.
Mooloolah Skate Ramp update
We have been following the local story of the Mooloolah community’s push for its own skate ramp. Although there is a skate ramp further along Mooloolah Connection road at Glenview, the Mooloolah community are requesting a smaller, more accessible one be built in the town to cater for younger children between the ages of four and 12. The Mooloolah Valley Community Association (MVCA) has thrown their support behind the project and has already received a substantial $20,000 grant from the Sunshine Coast Council ‘Stronger Communities Program’ which essentially funds the community initiative. A rally of support held on Friday, October 28 at the proposed site on Way Street met with a good turnout of community supporters, including the Principal of Mooloolah State School and his family. One of the attendees at the rally was “skater girl” Haylie (aka Microhaylie), who would love for the town to have their own ramp – especially with the rise of the sport and pastime for both boys and girls. Haylie currently travels locally and interstate to attend skateboarding competitions and is a young but vocal supporter of the proposal. At this stage, representatives of the MVCA with the help of State Member Mark McArdle are hoping to meet with other MPs Kate Jones, Stirling Hinchcliffe and Jackie Trad in order to progress this project and finalise the location of land for this community asset. New facility for packing pineapples A new state-of-the-art pineapple packing facility has been proposed for land on Steve Irwin Way at Glass House Mountains. A development application has been lodged with the Sunshine Coast Council for the land at 1120 Steve Irwin Way – just north of the Glasshouse Mountains Motel – on behalf of Tropical Pines Pty Ltd. Tropical Pines – a collaborative farmer-owned enterprise – is the largest supplier of fresh pineapples into the Australian market, with their pineapples being sold nationally through Woolworths, Coles, Aldi, Costco and a range of independent retailers. The proposed development will allow Tropical Pines to expand their current operation which involves delivery, packing, and dispatch of pineapples for distribution throughout the region. According to the supporting documentation, “the proposal has been appropriately designed to create a development that is supportive of the local community, while maintaining an attractive frontage for the length of the allotment that traverses along Steve Irwin Way.” Fourteen local farms are involved in both the management of the company and supplying the company with fresh pineapples, including Chris Fullerton, Murray Pike, Adam Pike, Ian Fullerton, Keith Morgan, Ken Fullerton, Robert Frizzo, Sam Pike and Wayne Moffat. Glenview waterpark stage 1 goes to Council The water activity theme park planned for Steve Irwin Way at Glenview took a step closer, with a development application for Stage 1 lodged with Sunshine Coast Council recently. The Material Change of Use application covers around half of the 24 hectare development site, located on lands adjacent to the Glenview BP. Stage 1 is looking to establish the Tourism Zone within the development – covering five distinct areas; the Front Car Park (with 520 car parks), the Front Entry, the Cove, the Great Lawn, and the Waterpark. In the planning reports, the Cove is described as being the main hub of the Tourist Zone where people move to once through the entry zone. Both the Front Entry and the Cove will house food, beverage and retail spaces. A development condition set out by Council for the retail area means that it will not include shops or a shopping centre for use by the general public other than a souvenir shop(s) that predominantly sells souvenir items directly related to waterpark use; and a surf shop that sells surfing related clothing and equipment. The Great Lawn is designed to be a multipurpose area that can accommodate sporting events such as football, or accommodate large gatherings for events such as music concerts. Also located in this area are a number of paid activities that visitors are able to interact with, including the adventure tower, bungee jumping, and dinner in the sky cable cart. The Waterpark section is 5.1 hectares of pure adrenalin fun and action, where the wave pool and associated water-related rides are planned to be located. Stages 2, 3 and 4 will be the subject of separate applications from the proponent, Sanad Capital. Council have also set a condition that the associated Resort Complex (stages 2 and 3) must not commence use before the Tourist Attraction use, which is what this current application covers. New water meters for Glass House Mountains During November Unitywater will be identifying and replacing water meters nearing the end of their life cycle in Glass House Mountains. This work is part of Unitywater’s annual infrastructure maintenance program. Affected residents will receive a notification card in their letterbox at least 48 hours before any works and, if they are home on the day of the work, Unitywater’s authorised contractor will make contact with them prior to replacing the meter. The contractors will be in Unitywater-branded vehicles and carry ID cards. Following meter replacement, the contractor will leave a Works Completed card in the resident’s letterbox which records the water consumption measured by the old meter. Customers are advised to keep this reading for reference and to cross check when they receive their next Unitywater account. We meet at Martin Rungert Park, Mooloolah, right in the centre of town, and walk a variety of routes about the local area. It’s a great way to start the day and to meet new friends. This is a Heart Foundation group activity with certificates being awarded for the number of walks completed. You don’t have to walk every day, or for the whole hour – just do as much as you feel you can. Please consider joining our friendly little group for a great start to the day. We do hope to see you soon. The photo here shows some of our group at the old tunnel last Friday when we did a ‘special’ walk. This was all the way from Mooloolah through the tunnel to Landsborough (about 7 km in total) where we stopped for coffee and a snack at the bakery. The return trip was much easier as we took the train and arrived back in Mooloolah by 8.45am. A great walk and a very social beginning to the day. I’ll repeat my words and say, hope to see you soon – everyone and all ages welcome.
Beerwah Writers Group
At our late October meeting, the Group confirmed that the release of the November issue of the ‘Five Minute Tales’ magazine will be available in November at local newsagents. This meeting’s ‘refresher’ topic was ‘Careless Writing’, which led to a discussion on colloquialisms, conversational expressions, slogans and the deliberate use of some of these to provide emphasis or humour in the text. It was agreed that the ‘refresher’ sessions be continued next year to include ‘wordsmithing’, ‘forms of poetry’ and the ‘legal aspects of using quotations’. Thirteen short Christmas stories were presented,
nine of which related to the change from religious to commercial orientation and most had a major emotional influence. The suggested writing for our next meeting includes Remembrance Day, as well as short stories for the magazine, or more, longer (300 to 500 words) stories being written for our next anthology, due for publication early next year. The Coochin Creek Bushland Group The group will be holding their final working bee for the year on Tuesday, 15 November from 8.00am to 11.00am. During the last working bee we inspected our beautiful Coochin Creek Environmental Reserve and found that a number of weeds, mainly Ochna and Choral Berry, are taking hold. We have therefore decided to spend the next working bee targeting those two weeds. Anybody interested in weed identification and control, or getting an insight into our reserve, is welcome to join us. The environment is fairly dense bushland so you are advised to wear boots, a long sleeved shirt, long pants, and to carry a water bottle. All equipment required, including tick repellent, will be supplied. Participation is free and tea will be served at a suitable time during the working bee.

You Said It The word on birds
Springtime is well and truly upon us and the need is urgent. Australian birds are into a breeding cycle that is critical to some of their survival as a species. If you regularly watch the birds coming and going in your backyard or neighbourhood, then please, please do not immediately interfere with our local birds, their nests and especially the young chicks. And let’s get the word out to children and grandchildren. The first and most important word is stop - do not touch what appear to be injured or baby birds or nests. The next word is look - step back and watch. Often, what appears to be an injured bird is really a very serious parent trying to lure you away from his or her nest. And, just as often, what appears to be an abandoned baby bird will be well cared for - you might even see the parent feeding while you watch. So, if you really value our native birds, please ‘Stop, Look and Listen’ before you interfere with nature. Sometimes what is well meant assistance is really a break in the natural cycle that cannot be repaired. It is also interesting to note that our seemingly aggressive parents (magpies, butcher birds and the like), are only swooping for a very short period of time (after the eggs hatch and while the nestlings are still nest-bound for their safety). The parent in this case will consider a certain circle of area around the nest, his territory (an imaginative fence if you like). Just like the barking dog at the fence, the parent is only swooping to warn you away from his nest in his territory. Just because we can’t see the circle (fence) we can at least imagine it in future walks and steer around it where possible (just like crossing the street to avoid the barking dog). It is always enjoyable watching wildlife and springtime is the best time of year to observe our wonderful Australian birds – just remember to ‘Stop, Look and Listen’. The letter from G. Muller (GC&M News October 19) uses the 'retired academics don't know what they are talking about' argument which is a poor form of ageism, where the age and work status of the person is used as a denigration. Dr Donald Hillman PhD, Emeritus Prof. of Animal Sciences (Michigan University) has written many papers on animal research. His background does not suddenly leave him when he retires - which he only did about two years ago. His paper on animals I referred to has 161 references (seven pages)

The second paper - 'Bird Collisions with Telecom Equipment' is from Dr Albert Manville, PhD, exwildlife biologist with the Division of Migratory Bird Management of the US Fish & Wildlife Service. He officially estimates that up to 6.8 million birds die per year in collisions with communications structures or their guy-support wires in North America. He now works as principal consultant for a conservation firm dealing with impacts to birds, bats and their habitats from communication towers and power lines. Dr Manville has testified more than 40 times before US Congress and other official bodies, published more than 170 research papers and given more than 160 invited public presentations. He's served on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Nature Conservancy Magazine. To say his work 'carries no weight' is plainly ridiculous. It’s his life's work. So Drs Hillman and Manville are obviously not ‘pseudo-scientists’. The other interesting fact is that governments are taking down communications towers in India (Supreme Court of India Orders Phone Towers Removed From Schools, Colleges, Hospitals in Rajasthan, 2012), parts of Taiwan, Cyprus, Finland, Austria, Britain, USA (Cell Tower moratoriums in parts of Wyoming, Maine, Illnois, Tennessee, Alaska, Missouri, North Carolina, Santa Fe, and California) and Ireland. Re: Railway Issues
I wish to add to Jim Straker’s recent remarks about the recent meetings in Landsborough and Glass House Mountains. What a waste of time they were. Many years ago I was taught to use what was called 'lateral thinking' about issues. By that, I mean do not confine your thinking to a one track mind type approach. No matter how off beat something might be, consider
it. It was obvious that the engineer and others present had their minds set on Roads-Roads. My suggestion that they look at the rail lines did not get much of a hearing. I suggested they look at either elevating or lowering the lines and leave the roads alone. They must already have the land they would need. Landsborough station could be raised up and fitted with elevators for traveller’s access. No land acquisitions would be required. I just wanted to say how lovely all the kids’ manners were on the evening of trick or treating. It made for a lovely fun evening. However, in the morning, I discovered lots of plastic lolly wrappers scattered in our yard and out in the street. This definitely dampened my first thoughts on well behaved kids. Surely it's not hard to take your wrappers home and pop them in the bin. You would think the many parents that were with the kids would make sure littering wouldn't occur. Please always put your rubbish in the bin, it doesn't matter how big or small the piece is. Jillian Landsborough
Club raises $7000 for charities
The Rotary Club of Maleny’s Melbourne Cup Lunch at Maleny Manor raised $7,000 for two worthy organisations: Blackall Range Care Group and the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. With wonderful support from Marlene and Simon Murray and staff at Maleny Manor, more than 100 guests enjoyed a fashion parade compered by visiting international model, Lauren Vickers, and fine dining, in the beautiful surroundings. The Cup sweeps and Calcutta auction were popular, and guests were rewarded with spot prizes and fabulous raffle prizes donated by supportive local businesses. Moving with technology
The Landsborough Kindy recently held their much anticipated Art Exhibition titled ‘Long Long Ago’. It was a fantastic group effort by all the children at the kindy and it included statues, nature creations, paintings, clay forms and much more. The works were outstanding to say the least, and the event was attended by all the families.
Contributed by Michelle Lenz Mrs Caroline Kelly, a teacher at Mooloolah State School, has been running a Coding Club for interested students every week. They have been highly engaged in the program and having a lot of fun. Recently these students completed an online challenge with Bebras Australia on computational thinking. They did an amazing job with many of the students receiving credits or distinctions in the course. Well done to all the students for their amazing efforts. The Coding Club is all about the skills in coding and computational thinking. This includes block coding with programs such as ‘Scratch and code.org’. The students are keen to learn new and exciting things and look forward to their days at the club. Mooloolah State School is now applying for a grant to enable the purchase of more hardware and software; and robotics to run a whole school program. This will keep students up-to-date and
The teachers did a fantastic job of transforming the kindy into an art gallery and making it a wonderful evening for everyone. The evening also included two collaborative art pieces that were sold to two families at silent auction! Local artist Cathy Condon, who hosts the Brisbane Art Prize, generously donated some amazing artworks to the kindergarten. These three prizes by international artists, will be raffled as a fundraiser for the kindy. Anyone interested in purchasing tickets can contact the kindy or see us selling tickets outside Beerwah IGA on Saturday, 19 November. The prizes will be drawn on 30 November.

Wonderful, Wonderful Water ... I don't think there is anyone who does not have a fond childhood memory involving water play… the refreshing feel of cold water on our skin on a hot day … that splosh, splosh as you tried to move that container of water which was way too full! Such a rich, sensory, experience that provides many development opportunities for young children. When children are pouring water, they are improving their fine motor skills and their eye to hand coordination which is so important. Nearly all hand movements require input from the eye e.g. when a child draws they follow the pencil in their hand with their eyes to draw lines and shapes. Bit by bit we see more and more water in the containers and less on the floor! Water play also provides a great opportunity for cognitive development as children play with
maths and science concepts such as full and empty, shallow and deep, heavy and light, and float and sink. Why does this thing float but that one doesn't? This type of learning can be enhanced with the introduction of other mediums to the water such as food dye, detergent, and things which change property – melting or dissolving. Beerwah High thanks local businesses Twelve high achieving students were recently pleasantly surprised when they took out Age Champion awards in Beerwah High’s Academic & Cultural Cup. The students were very excited to receive their medallions and have the opportunity to pen their name into the Scholastic Almanac. What really surprised them were the unexpected extra rewards that they were showered with by the local Beerwah community. “It’s so good to be acknowledged for our success in the awards. Contributed by Sally Joyce The Peachester Hall takes on many guises. One more memorable one was the wonderful sight of children’s costumes that filled the hall on Friday night, 28 October. Peachester State School’s annual school disco was once again Halloween themed and the children and many parents went to a great effort to dress up for it. The whole school fitted perfectly into a hall this size for a night out of fun games, dancing, costume competitions and a sausage sizzle. The noise of laughter and fun was so loud that we didn’t even hear the thunder of a passing storm. Many thanks to Fiona Gray, Rebecca Morgan, Abra Cartmell and Margie Jennings who put so much effort into organising and decorating the event along with a great team of catering Mums, Dads and grandparents who brought along a great selection of creative spooky treats. It’s getting that time of year when the temperatures starts to soar, lawns start to wither, paddocks brown off, trees shed leaves, the ground cracks, houses start to bake (unless they are well insulated) and if you don’t have air-conditioning in your car it’s time to cook in your own juices. What we need is shade and that’s a great incentive for you to plant trees and shrubs. Trees and shrubs create shade and humidity and are nature’s air conditioners and that’s what is needed to cool the temperature. Planting with shady trees to the south of your house has several benefits including protecting from strong southerlies, cooling the air temperature through their shade and adding moisture to the air on a hot dry day. Most importantly when planting trees near your house always take into consideration how high the tree will grow. Unfortunately, we see too many examples of soaring gum trees planted on fence lines in small acreage blocks. Planting with lower growing shrubs and groundcovers on the north side will ensure that you don’t miss out on the winter sun (let’s not forget how cool it was just a month or so back!). One way to achieve height and summer shade (and not miss out on the winter sun) is to plant deciduous trees. Stay cool and plant the shade of tomorrow today.
Environment Wildlife Reserve to protect private land The Queensland Government is preparing changes to legislation that will create a new ‘top shelf’ class of protected area, called a Special Wildlife Reserve. Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles said the proposed amendments to the Nature Conservation Act 1992 would protect private land of outstanding conservation significance from activities that may affect their natural values. “The laws that the Palaszczuk Government will deliver next year will create entirely new opportunities for charities, the community and the private sector to partner with the government to add value to conservation,” Dr Miles said. “Private funders will be able to create reserves of land which have the same legal status and protection as a national park, and will help to conserve and protect the diversity of plants, animals and ecosystems found in Queensland,” he said. Dr Miles said the amendments would protect land that contributed to a “comprehensive, adequate and representative protected area estate.” “Special Wildlife Reserves will also provide a secure environment for conservation organisations and philanthropists seeking to invest in the protection and management of Queensland’s outstanding natural areas,” he said. “Potential impacts on other interests in land, including native title, have been identified and will be addressed through legislative amendments.” Not-for-profit Queensland Trust for Nature general manager Nerida Bradley applauded the Palaszczuk Government for its forward thinking. “This is an extremely positive move in terms of providing a much higher level of protection for biodiversity on private land,” Ms Bradley said. “When private landholders want to work with government to protect parts of their land, these changes will really improve the tools in the government’s toolbox. “At the moment the highest level of protection is only available when State owned land is set aside as national park, and these changes acknowledge the importance of protecting privately owned land of equal significance to Queensland’s bio-diversity. That puts Queensland ahead of the rest of the nation to some degree,” she said. Dr Miles said further consultation on the proposed legislation will be undertaken with stakeholders prior to debate, in addition to upcoming public consultation on a broader protected area strategy for Queensland. “This will be an opportunity for business to contribute to work that ordinarily the State Government does,” Dr Miles said. “Many businesses are not just looking to tick a box and comply with the obligation to plant trees that replace trees that they cut down. They want to know the contribution they are making will last in perpetuity.”

Moss and Ross Kendall have recently released ‘The Mistletoes of Subtropical Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria’ and it’s a fascinating insight to a much-misunderstood group of plants. This valuable work helps dispel some myths about mistletoes – I now know that these ‘much maligned’ plants are not exotic parasites that kill trees! There are 90 known species of Australian mistletoes; most of them are hemiparasites, carrying out photosynthesis and manufacturing their own carbohydrates and hormones as well as obtaining nutrients from the host plant – most mistletoes live in equilibrium with their hosts. Mistletoes play important roles in various ecosystems and are hosts to a range of moths, butterflies and other creatures. Rise of the Nan Van
New RACQ research has found nearly one in three Queensland cars with child seats installed was being driven by grandparents. RACQ's Lauren Ritchie said the rise of the 'Nan Van' had come as grandparents took on less traditional roles in helping with childcare, as modern families juggled their work-life balance. "This is a trend we weren't seeing as often even 20 years ago, but it now seems to be much more common for grandparents to be more involved in many areas of their grandchildren's lives, including ferrying them about in their own cars,” Ms Ritchie said. Ms Ritchie said there were important safety checks to take into account for families and grandparents considering using ‘Nan's Van’ as a regular form of transport for young children. A new Sunshine Coast Council initiative, funded by the Queensland Mental Health Commission, will give over-50s the chance to improve their mental health and wellbeing. Registration is now open for the free Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors 16-week program which will be delivered in two stages. “Stage one runs for six weeks and will assist individuals to set goals to improve their physical health and will be followed by an experiential session connecting them with existing communitybased activity programs,” Cr McKay said. “The second stage delivered over 10 weeks will see seniors paired with a Peer Support Worker to implement cognitive and physical tools for improvement of mental wellbeing while connecting them with established networks and services in the community. “The program is available for participants across the Sunshine Coast and will include lunch and transport if necessary for residents living in rural areas or where public transport is not an option. “The sessions will be held at Maroochydore Neighbourhood Centre from 10.00am to 12.30pm on Wednesdays, commencing in late November. Celebrating with grandparents Mooloolah State School had a great time celebrating both Grandparents and Volunteers Day recently. This is a way for the school and students to give back to the helpers of the school and celebrate the important educating role grandparents play in our lives. This year’s tribute was put together by Ms Wendy Gaines, one of our fabulous teachers, who recognised our volunteers with certificates and presented a fabulous slide show for the grandparents. It was amazing to see the generations come together; the grandparents came for a special celebration in the hall, performed by the school band, choir and Spanish dancers. They were then taken to classrooms to spend time with their grandchildren, reading, playing games, etc. They were given a special morning tea. The grandparents reminisced about their days at school as they engaged in the children’s learning. They laughed and mingled with others as they went from parade, to classes and to morning tea. The students were so proud and excited to have their grandmas, grandpas, nanas, pops and other special people here to celebrate that it was hard to say goodbye. They bid them farewell with kisses, hugs and words of love. The students and staff would like to thank everyone for coming and making this a special day.

Puppy training program offers seniors a new ‘leash’ on life
Guide Dogs Queensland are calling for more volunteers, particularly seniors, to sign up for their Puppy Raising Program ahead of the New Year, with up to 20 new pups looking for temporary homes. Disability Services and Seniors Minister Coralee O’Rourke said Puppy Raisers were top of Guide Dogs Queensland’s Christmas wish list, with two new litters expected to arrive at the Bald Hills Breeding and Training Centre before Christmas, generating demand for up to 20 new carers for 2017. “Raising a puppy involves caring for a potential guide dog from around eight weeks of age until they are up to 18 months and are ready to commence formal training,” Mrs O’Rourke said. “Queensland seniors and retirees are uniquely positioned to take on these roles, which require a lot of time and care to familiarise the puppy with social settings such as shopping centres, restaurants and public transport. “By becoming a Puppy Raiser, older Queenslanders can benefit from the rewards of volunteering, as well as increased health and well-being associated with animal interactions

and from being more active in the community. “The last litters of the year will be born soon, and Guide Dogs Queensland are looking for raisers to take on these pups from early 2017, when they’re old enough to go to their new homes. “So far, the Puppy Raising and dog boarding programs in South-East Queensland have already attracted around 60 senior volunteers – which is great for the individuals, the organisation and the pups.”

I recently hosted Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister, Darren Chester MP, here on the Sunshine Coast for a first-hand look at some of the Sunshine Coast's major infrastructure needs. Inspecting the site of the $929.3 million Caloundra Road-Sunshine Motorway interchange project announced in September, the Minister's visit was a great opportunity to see how this upgrade will be a game changer for local motorists. After a long campaign by the Sunshine Coast's Federal and State MPs, the Turnbull Government is contributing $743.4 million towards the Fulton Hogan - Seymour Whyte joint venture with preliminary work to begin late this year. The project will widen the highway to six lanes and reduce congestion and travel times for thousands of hinterland residents who pass through the Caloundra Road Interchange each day. While this project is an important infrastructure upgrade for the Sunshine Coast, we must continue to pursue urgent upgrades to the Bruce from the Coast to Caboolture as well as the duplication of the North Coast Rail Line. The Minister was left in no uncertain terms that we expect the Federal Government to play a role in making these vital projects a reality to help the Sunshine Coast cater for the massive population growth expected to occur around Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Landsborough and Caloundra South within the next 25 years.

While it was a wonderful morning for the walk from the Suncoast Christian College to Palmwoods, it will forever remain a sombre occasion as we remember Daniel and support Bruce and Denise Morcombe’s important work to promote child safety initiatives in our communities. I have started moving around the electorate with my community listening posts and have already had some great feedback from locals. I will soon be visiting a community near you so please keep an eye on my Facebook page for upcoming dates. Local Heroes Grants - Round five success stories Round five of my Local Heroes Grants has been announced and another three community groups and two individuals in Glass House have been presented with a cheque for $250 each for much needed equipment or for individual sporting pursuits. The winners in round five include the Palmwoods Christmas Committee to publicise Palmwoods Green Bush Christmas, Maleny Rangers Football Club to purchase new training equipment for Mini Roos, and the Quilt Love Project Caboolture to purchase supplies to make quilts for the homeless. Individual winners this time were Todd McClure to assist with costs to attend the Regional Academy for Softball and Dimity Bucciarelli towards costs associated with playing for Fire Football Club. It truly is a credit to Bruce and Denise Morcombe to see the number of people participating in the Walk for Daniel increasing every year and this year was no exception. Their continued work through the Foundation to protect and educate our kids and support victims of crime is an inspiration and it is a privilege for my family and me to make this walk with them each year. I was also accompanied by my colleague Ros Bates, Shadow Minister for Communities, Women and Youth, Child Safety and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, Disability Services and Seniors, who assisted me in hosting a Community Day for Daniel Morning Tea in my office following the walk. We were honoured that John Pearce from the Daniel Morcombe Foundation came along and shared with us some of the wonderful work the Foundation is doing. Mooloolah monthly meeting update
Much of the attention at the meeting was again around increased local vandalism and hooning. I am pushing ahead for Mooloolah township to be included in the CCTV Monitoring Program. It is now resolved that the skate facility will go on the Mooloolah Community Rec ground as Queensland Rail has reiterated they don’t have any available land. Watch this column for a full update on our consultation in the Reserve.

Residents will be happy to know that keeping pedestrians and cyclists safe and connected as they move about their local neighbourhoods continues to be top of council’s agenda. This month work will be completed on a 1.8m-wide concrete pathway along the northern side of Brandenburg Road between 7 Fern Gully Place and 36 Brandenburg Road, Mooloolah Valley. The pathway will include kerb access ramps and connect to the existing network in the area.

For those looking to take a dip and cool down in this increasingly warmer weather, I can advise the Mooloolah pool has reopened and is also planning an ‘Open Day’ on November 12.
Maleny Showgrounds sewer upgrade
Heads up – Unitywater is undertaking works to upgrade the sewer main from Cedar Grove Court to the Maleny Showgrounds. A section of the concrete skate park has to be removed as part of the construction and will be reinstated as soon as possible. Full works are scheduled for completion by the end of November (weather permitting).
MFS 25th anniversary
I am very much looking forward to attending the Maleny Film Society’s 25th anniversary event on November 13 at the Maleny Community Centre from 2pm. The event is free and will include a screening of the first MFS film, ‘My Life as a Dog’, played back in 1991 as well as live entertainment and a memorabilia display.

Living - History Iconic Australian author comes to Caloundra Sunshine Coast Council invites avid readers to join acclaimed Australian author Peter FitzSimons at The Events Centre, Caloundra from 7.30pm to 9.30pm on Thursday, November 24. One of Australia’s biggest selling non-fiction authors of the last 20 years, Peter is the author of more than 30 books, including Tobruk, Kokoda, Batavia, Eureka, Ned Kelly, Gallipoli and biographies of Douglas Mawson, Nancy Wake‚ Kim Beazley‚ Nick Farr-Jones‚ Les Darcy, Steve Waugh and John Eales. He is also a journalist with the Sydney Morning Herald and Sun-Herald newspapers and a former Wallabies rugby union player. Peter will be discussing his new non-fiction release, Victory at VillersBretonneux, the incredible story of Australian triumph in World War I. With his usual unique style, Peter will highlight an extraordinary feat in Australian defence history. Bringing to life the stories of men across all sides, he will paint a vivid picture of the conditions along the brutal Western Front. Rare book mystery The Fenwick family, including 20 year old daughter Mary, arrived in Moreton Bay from Scotland in 1855. Whilst her father John and mother Janet took up farming at Eagle Farm, Mary soon gained a position as governess at Newstead House in Brisbane with the family of Captain John Clements Wickham. Mary could both read and write and Captain Wickham had been widowed in 1852. When Wickham’s wife Anna died in June, 1852 he was left to care for three children, Charles Brenton, aged 8, Ellen Susan, aged 5, and Alfred William, aged 2. Recently, Ethel Burgess (Mary’s great granddaughter), unearthed from her wardrobe an old book entitled ‘Harry and Lucy’, published in 1837. The book stimulated great interest when an inscription was found on the inside cover: “Charles B Wickham with Aunt Emma’s love.” In 1859, when Queensland separated from NSW and Captain Wickham took the decision to return to England, Mary accompanied the family on the sailing ship the ‘Duncan Dunbar’. Wickham had remarried in 1857 and his new wife Ellen Deering was pregnant with their second child. The baby, Henry Falkland Wickham, was born off the Falkland Islands. It is not known exactly how the book made its way back to the Glasshouse Mountains. Might we assume that Mary read this book to young Charles at Newstead House prior to 1859 and did Mary take the book with her back to England to read to the younger children on a long sea voyage? Mary returned to Moreton Bay in 1861 and subsequently married William Grigor to establish Bankfoot House.

Students from the Black Swan School of Dance will take the audience on a journey to revisit the fairy tales of their childhood through the wonder of dance with their upcoming concert ‘Once Upon a Time’. Learn about herbicide alternatives Keeping up to date on new ideas and improvements in the garden and on the land is always a good idea. If you’re doing any revegetation, tree planting or weed control around your place, you might be interested in a field day being held at Kandanga (which is up near Amamoor – best to go through Maleny to Kenilworth, then take the Brooloo Road which then goes to Kandanga). Organised by the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC), it looks at trials done to compare the weed control effectiveness of five different treatments – glyphosate, acetic acid, pelargonic acid, Bioweed and mulching. Experts on the day will also give talks on the science of soils, cats claw creeper, the alternative weed control industry and projects done through the MRCCC. Native Hibiscus or Native Rosella
Hibiscus heterophyllus Native hibiscus is a relatively common shrub found in wet or dry forests. It’s usually regarded as a shrub but in some situations, it can reach six or seven metres. The stems can be slightly prickly and leaves vary in shape from single oval shape to three lobed. When grown in full sun in the home garden, hibiscus can be pruned to an attractive rounded shape. However in the wild and under larger trees it becomes a less compact and rather straggly plant. The flowers are large and attractive, usually white or pale pink with red/ purple throat. Buds are often deep pink. Flowers are short lived but flowering continues from spring to summer. The fruit and seed capsules are prickly and often targeted by insects making it difficult to obtain viable seed. Native hibiscus is currently flowering in our National Parks and along road verges in the local area.

Noticeboard Maleny Neighbourhood Centre – is putting the call out for volunteers to assist in a roster to serve Soup/Stew at our Monday Soup nights. The aim of the night is to bring some reprieve to struggling families by providing one of the week’s meals for the family, and also assisting to feed any homeless community members. The shifts can be once a month or two hours every couple of months. We need help in cooking the soup, setting up / packing up and serving. Each person can volunteer as much or as little as they can. Thus saith our God.’ Deuteronomy 4.29 Throughout the Bible, mankind has struggled to keep in contact with God. The psalms give us examples of occasions when God has seemed very distant: in Psalm 13, we read, ‘How long, O Lord? Will you forget me for ever? How long will you hide your face from me?’ I’m sure we can all think of occasions when those particular verses have rung true in our own lives. And yet, we have probably all also known moments when we could say with certainty that God has walked with us. Those times can give us the strength to keep seeking in the knowledge that he is still close to us, even when we are unaware of his presence. The most important promise in the Bible is ‘I will be with you’. God walked with Adam in the Garden of Eden; in the story of Jacob’s ladder, God says to Jacob ‘Know that I am with you’ (Genesis 28:15); he walks with us through

the ‘valley of the shadow of death’ in Psalm 23; when Jesus ascended to heaven, his final promise to his disciples was ‘I am with you always, to the end of the age’ (Matthew 28:20). If we think of Michelangelo’s famous painting of the Creation, we see God and Adam with arms extended towards one another, fingers almost touching. God appears to be reaching out, to come as close to Adam as he can, whereas Adam is more relaxed: his arm isn’t fully extended, as if he isn’t quite ready to make that final effort to make contact. God is so close to Adam – just as he is to us. The extra effort involved in reaching God isn’t huge: he’s just waiting for us to make contact. How do we do it? In worship, in prayer, when we read our Bibles, in our everyday conversations with God, and by being open to his presence with us. We can be assured that if we truly do seek him with all our hearts, he is there, waiting to welcome us, wanting to be part of our lives. All we have to do is let him in, stretch out to make contact and feel his presence with us. Whoever we are, whatever we are doing, God will be there and will walk with us: what more could we ask.

Jimmy’s team had two wins with one loss. Good to see both Jack and Matt out on the green enjoying their bowls. Our Fifth Division Pennant Side spent the weekend at McKenzie Park, Nerang, competing in the State Pennant Finals. What a great weekend. Very tough competition facing clubs that had up to 400 members. We tried hard winning only 1 out of 5 games by beating runner up Tewantin Noosa. Burleigh Heads won overall for the second year running. Some laughs were had by everyone. I know we all enjoyed the weekend. The Forever Young Cancer Charity Fundraiser will now be on Saturday, 12 November with barefoot bowls kicking off at 6.00pm with bowls which will cost $5.00 followed by raffles and auctions. Police Bowls Day break up is 11.00am Sunday, 4 December. Cost is $30.00 for bowls and lunch. Or $7.00 for a game of bowls from about 11.30am. All welcome. The Glasshouse Hinterland/Bribie Island AFL Masters (over 35s) recently held their presentation night at the Beerwah Hotel. The night was a great success and the team would like to thank the hotel for their hospitality. The first year of the merged team was a great success with them winning 10 out of 12 games for the season and the joint clubs would like to thank their major sponsor the Beerwah Hotel for the great support. The Masters Team would also like to thank the Big Mower for coming on board as a sponsor of the team as well as the Junior Club. We were able to provide the team with new designed jerseys, polo shirts and training singlets with the assistance of the sponsors! Witta Tennis Club Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wompoos played in the Sunshine Coast tennis finals at Nambour on Sunday 6 November. They were up against the Division 2 minor premiers Tewantin Tigers who had already recorded two wins over the Wompoos during the rounds. However with the wonderful Wompoos ladies, Paula and Liz, really firing the Tigers found themselves in trouble on this big occasion. With support from their reliable men the Wompoos team had their opposition struggling most of the day, finally running out 'winners' by 9 sets to 3 sets. As the 2016 Division 2 winners Wompoos might well find themselves in Division 1 in 2017.Thank you to everyone who has turned out over a long and very successful season. Our annual tournament was held from Thursday to Sunday inclusive and was very successful both in player turn out and results for the clubs involved. On Thursday, four players contested Division One, with Ted Singleton from Caloundra being the winner and Colin Harris of Coolum coming in second. It was good to see the other three divisions have the maximum of eight players in each. The Division Two winner was Fred Lanphier of Headland/ Buderim with Nick Cram, from Maleny, being runner-up. The winner of the Third Division, played on Saturday was Peter
Mackey from Graceville, with our own Sarah Widin coming in second. Sunday's Fourth Division had Nambour's Robyn Pettman taking top honours and Coolum's Wade Hart runner up. All players had an enjoyable contest and relished the shortened format. Congratulations to all participants. Normal coaching resumes on Saturday; regular association croquet coaching is held at our grounds on the Maleny Showgrounds on Saturday mornings; and the Range Croquet Club welcomes new players at any time, with coaching and mallets available for beginners.
