We had to make a quick trip to Newcastle last week. As I was wandering through an air-conditioned shopping centre looking for some sunscreen and a hat to help contend with the outside heat wave, I heard Christmas carols being pumped out of the speakers. I thought to myself, yeah, it is finally December, it’s definitely summer and thankfully most of us will be able to travel for proper (COVID Safe) catch ups with family and friends (fingers crossed in most parts of Australia) this year. Local News Maleny Show to go ahead in 2021 A matter of life or death About $2.5 million in funding is needed to open Australia’s first eating disorder residential recovery centre Wandi Nerida at Mooloolah. The residential centre, received federal government funding to support the build and contribute towards the cost of operations but its operators, the Butterfly Foundation, urgently need additional funding to open the doors. Wandi Nerida, meaning ‘gather together to blossom’, is a traditional name given to the centre by local elders of the Kabi Kabi nation. Butterfly Foundation CEO Kevin Barrow said a different approach to the treatment of eating disorders was now needed in Australia. “Eating disorders have one of the highest mortality rates of all mental illnesses, and with more than one million Australians currently suffering from an eating disorder, every Australian should have access to the right type of treatment to enable their sustainable recovery,” Mr Barrow said. “A residential eating disorder-specific centre like Wandi Nerida will provide

an evidence-informed model of care to address all types of eating disorder symptoms and behaviours, as well as socio-psychological factors that can prolong a person’s mental illness,” he said. The recovery centre is a multidisciplinary staffed residence with 13 beds that has been purpose-built and will be open to anyone in Australia of any gender and to people with varying eating disorder presentations. Mr Barrow said the phased treatment structure had been adapted for the Australian environment and provided for various interventions focussing on all aspects of an eating disorder, including psychiatric, clinical and nutritional. “All Australians have the right to access this type of a facility without having to travel internationally. The fact that Butterfly has already received some 200 expressions of interest speaks volumes,” he said. Barring a new wave of COVID-19, the Maleny Show will go ahead in 2021 thanks to a $70,000 federal government grant. Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said he was delighted that Maleny had been able to access funding to help get them “through this tough period and out the other side in a sound position to host again in 2021”. “Every year the Maleny Show is absolutely the biggest show in town and it was very disappointing for all of us to miss out in 2020,” Mr Wallace said. The Maleny Show has been the southern and central Sunshine Coast hinterland’s largest agricultural show for the past 80 years, with this year being one of very few years when the show hasn’t been held. The grant will be used by the Maleny Show Society to pay for expenses such as grounds maintenance, rates, utilities, insurance and much more to ensure the show can go ahead next year. Maleny Show Society secretary Lois White said the grant would make the difference between being able to put on a show next year and not.

“It’s a godsend for us and we are so thankful for it,” Lois said. “The Maleny Show Society has a couple of big new projects that we were hoping to do this year, and this funding has given us the confidence to make them happen. “We are currently working through the industry COVID Safe plan to see what changes we will need to incorporate into our planning for next year’s show. “However, overall, this has given us new momentum and there’s a lot of excitement now for next year’s show,” Lois said.

Beerwah State High School recently held its 29th annual awards ceremony to acknowledge the achievements of this year’s students. Sadly, due to COVID-19 restrictions parents and family members could not be present at the event. The school principal Lyn McDonald and staff congratulated all the students who were the recipients of an award in the difficult year that has been 2020. Despite the challenges students faced this year, there were some amazing accomplishments in the areas of academic achievement, vocational

Beerwah State High School student Kiara Chapman celebrated her school graduation with being named the 2020 school-based trainee of the year. For the past 12 months, Kiara has been undertaking a Certificate III in companion animal services with local Glass House Mountains business Truckaluck Kennels and was recognised for her efforts at a presentation at the school last month. The course is usually run over two years but COVID-19 turned out to be in Kiara’s favour and she was able undertake more intensive work hours on site, completing the course in just under 12 months. “It was really nice to be recognised for the award and I’ve really enjoyed working and learning about the many different animals at Truckaluck Kennels,” Kiara said. “It’s been great getting to know the animals’ different personalities and learn about what they need. I loved it all.” While Kiara hopes to pursue a career with animals, after 13 years of

schooling she’s planning to take some well-deserved time to decide where she wants to focus her further studies. “Completing the traineeship has given me a great start and really confirmed that I’d love to continue working with animals in the future,” Kiara said. Owner of Truckaluck Kennels Anne Freebairn said she was thrilled that Kiara was recognised as the school’s trainee of the year. “Kiara has shown great enthusiasm. She has been able to gain a good knowledge of a wide variety of animals and practical skills she can take with her in the future,” Anne said.

Sunshine Coast waste powers 1,200 homes On the back of becoming Australia’s first council to offset 100% of its electricity consumption through its own solar farm, Sunshine Coast Council is now converting waste to electricity at its Caloundra renewable energy facility. Officially opened on November 24, the facility located at Bells Creek is linked to the power grid and creates enough energy to power 1,200 homes

24 hours a day, seven days a week. It will generate 7,000 megawatt hours of renewable electricity per annum, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 41,000 tonnes each year, which is the equivalent of removing about 9,000 cars from the road. Division 1 councillor and Deputy Mayor Rick Baberowski said plans were in place to expand the energy plants into other council facilities. “In the next five to ten years more power generation plants will be installed at Caloundra landfill as the gas collection system is progressively expanded into new landfill cells that hold the waste,” Cr Baberowski said. The facility will be operated and maintained by LMS, a leading renewable energy and emissions reduction company. LMS chief commercial officer James McLeay said that capturing the biogas generated at the landfill and using it to generate renewable energy reduced the environmental impact of landfill significantly. He said that the opening of the facility saw the Sunshine Coast Council

circular economy as a priority for both current and future generations,” he said. The project is registered under the Emission Reduction Fund (ERF) and to date has been issued with 76,302 Australian carbon credit units, which are sold via the Clean Energy Regulator.

Planning for what if GC&M News has featured a series of stories in the past few months about being prepared for weather emergencies that can confront us each year. Recently members of the Maleny community were offered the opportunity to attend an informative disaster preparedness forum to learn more. The session was presented by the Sunshine Coast Council and facilitated by Maleny Forums, a group that raises local issues, increasing knowledge in the community and fostering local action. Maleny Forum’s Jane Sherwin said the forum participants were challenged to identify the four top natural disaster risks on the Sunshine Coast (grass fires/bushfires, cyclones, floods, heat waves) and to reflect on what makes a potent response to disasters. “Such disasters can lead to impacts on residents such as up to a week without electricity and water, living among debris and with shops closed. It became clear that what is equally or even more important is that individual households are prepared

and that neighbours work with other neighbours to keep each other safe,” Jane said. Lynda Williams, the Sunshine Coast Council’s disaster resilience officer, presented an informative session outlining the four components of a What If (there is a weather disaster) Plan. 1. Get planning: By becoming more aware of likely risks and knowing how community resources respond to local emergencies. 2. Get packing and prepare: Survival items that fit in a small bag that can be grabbed in an emergency situation. 3. Get connected: Including knowing who to contact for important resources. 4. Get ready: Know if the likelihood of weather events is high. The seminar was perfect timing for a summer What If Plan. Jane said crucial to individual households doing well in a disaster was the capacity of each local community to collectively respond well to a disaster.

Some of the resources shared by Sunshine Coast Council that are useful in preparing for weather disasters Rick Vickers also spoke at the forum about the Maleny Disaster Plan, which identifies local resources that can be mobilised when there is a natural disaster. It was endorsed by the Sunshine Coast Council in 2015 and disturbingly became inactive in 2016. “This means that when Maleny next experiences a natural disaster, responsibilities will rest with the

Maleny Co-op expansion By Sonia Isaacs Clark After months of hard work, collaboration and planning, community retailer Maple Street Co-op welcomed members, non-members and visitors to experience the newly expanded premises at its official opening on Wednesday, December 2. Manager Charlotte Fogarty-Henderson said that, in reality, the new premises would continue to “organically evolve over time following the official ribbon cut as team members finalise the layout and product transfer”. “Our team has been committed to ensuring the expansion realised one of our key visions, which was to improve our store layout and provide a more intuitive experience,” Charlotte said. “They have been fantastic and have helped with the store transition like busy bees around honey! “With over 4,500 product lines you can imagine the effort involved,” she said. One of the reasons why the store holds such an expansive range of product lines, which is substantially more than an average supermarket, is because it has always been focussed on servicing the needs of its members, so responds to their product requests. “We stock a huge number of specialty products, such as our range of milk alternatives and over 60 types of specialty herbal teas. We plan to expand our range once we’ve settled into our new space and are always open to new product suggestions,” Charlotte said.

After 17 years as the owner and pharmacist at the Glass House Mountains Pharmacy, Martin Vigar has decided to retire. During those years Martin has cared for and looked after the health of the community. He was an important source of support for many this year through the pandemic. He has played an important role in the local community and has always supported local schools, organisations and events. Martin would like to wish the Glass House community all the very best for the future. He thanked the community for its support and patronage over the years. “I’ve enjoyed supporting the local community here in Glass House and have gotten to know many locals well over the years and seen many families grow during that time,” he said. “I’d like to wish everyone well and no doubt you’ll see me around from time to time.” Martin’s last day was on Tuesday this week, December 8. The team at the pharmacy is now part of the TerryWhite Chemmart team.

Energy expert shares free tips By Sonia Isaacs Clark John Lynn recently published an eightchapter ebook called ‘Home Energy Efficiency Secrets: The Inside Story’. Engaging social activities for over 65s Glasshouse Country Care’s long-running social activity and day trips program recently restarted with some new activities and a range of fun and engaging social options for people aged 65 and over to get out and about during the week. Activities range from mystery day trips to locations all around the Sunshine Coast, booked day tours to places such as Bribie Island, visits to the Marcoola night markets and local attractions, to activities including line dancing or arm-chair yoga. General manager Clare Mullins said that since relaunching the program in October, there had been a great response from clients appreciating the

opportunity to socialise and choose activities that appealed to them. They also enjoy the safety and convenience of being picked up from home, taken out, having a bite to eat and then being dropped home afterwards. “The program is part of a subsidised service that realises the importance of meeting others and being involved in regular social activities for people’s physical and mental wellbeing,” Clare said. “We offer outings or activities every weekday and our team has put in a lot of thought and effort to ensure we offer interesting and engaging social activities through our monthly program that will appeal to a range of age groups aged over 65.” The subsidised service is offered through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), with a low additional cost generally between $10 to $20. It includes transport, meals and the daily activity or outing of the client’s choosing. “Our new sunset social has proven to be very popular, where people are brought back to our custom-made outdoor bar area to enjoy conversation, nibbles, a glass of wine/champagne/cocktail or mocktail options at twilight before being dropped home later in the evening,” Clare said. “We have special event days such as Christmas gatherings and Melbourne Cup as well as op shop tour days, gardening and casino day activities that are very popular.” People can access the program by contacting My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 and ask for a social support group referral for social interactions and inclusion arranged through Glasshouse Country Care. Beerburrum children’s Christmas party a hit

Contributed by Janelle Whipp A great time was had at the annual Beerburrum Hall’s children’s Christmas party, which was this year successfully combined with the Beerburrum State School party. A festive atmosphere greeted everyone with fun activities inside and outside the hall, and the students’ performances highlighted the afternoon, along with the arrival of Santa on the fire truck! Many thanks to all the businesses that contributed to the event, including the petting zoo, reptiles experience, merry-go-round, face painting, badge making, sausage sizzle and coffee van who gave out free slushies to all the kids. A big thanks goes out to all the local businesses who gave generously towards prizes for the raffle. And many thanks to all the volunteers who give generously of their time and energy – a true community spirit.

Have you heard about the Mend-it Café A group of local sewers, supported by Beerwah CWA and Boomerang Bags, decided in August this year to offer a monthly Mend-it Café to our local community. The Mend-it team provides free basic clothing repairs in order to save people money, reduce clothing waste and teach basic mending skills, all while you enjoy a free cuppa and a chat. The Mend-it Café team has been delighted by the community’s response. Team member Bekky Hoge said a steady stream of people had brought in mending and enjoyed morning tea with the team. “We’ve taught people to sew on buttons, replaced zips and done plenty of hem adjustments,” Bekky said. “The participants have been keen to get involved and there’s always plenty of unpicking for people to help with.” The team will have a break in January but from February the Mend-it Café

will happen from 9am-12noon at the Beerwah CWA Hall on the first Saturday and second Monday of each month. “We’ve really enjoyed meeting new people through the Mend-it Café and we are receiving very positive feedback,” Bekky said. “People tell us they appreciate the free mending service but also enjoy spending time in the relaxed, fun mending sessions.” If you have sewing skills that you would like to share at the Mend-it Café, the team would love to meet you. The group is friendly and informal, and understands that we all have other commitments, so any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. The final Mend-it Café for 2020 will be held on Monday, December 14. Please feel free to bring along your mending or just pop in to say “hi” and check out what the team does. Everyone is welcome.

Music Today The body is dependent on motion – from big and slow to small and fast motions or vibrations. We walk with swinging arms at one end of the scale, going right through to muscular tremors and our use of sound waves to localise our place in the environment. Every body motion, some lasting seconds and others microseconds, is a kind of vibration and thus a kind of sound. Scientists confirm that sound has a massive influence on how the brain is organised. Coherent sound patterns can help nervous systems tune themselves. This explains the value of sound therapy and you might see it offered today as ‘sound baths’, which do, in fact, make one feel healed just like a good massage. Sound baths provide a meditative experience that makes use of a range of sounds but specifically they use two types that are used to recalibrate the body. To fine tune one’s spatial localisation sense, hearing where a sound comes from, there are rattles, chimes and

rainsticks - objects that make sharp, sudden noises. These constitute what physicists call point sources, a kind of sound pattern originating from exact places in space and time. To recalibrate whole-body vibrations, sound baths also include gongs struck consistently with soft beaters, tuning forks and things that ring continuously from being rubbed on the rim, in this case brass Tibetan singing bowls and large cylindrical quartz bowls, which create sustained notes. These typically form standing waves in the room that have the simplest possible pattern and so they provide the entire body with consistent, coherent stimulation. Community Groups Making a stand

A chance conversation between Mike Norman, of Maleny and District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC), and Lionel Tilley, of the Maleny Rotary Club, about needing a lectern led straight to the Blackall Range Woodcrafters. With his twin hats as a Rotarian and Woodie firmly tilted, Lionel presented Mike’s request to the next Woodies’ meeting. Woodie Ron Turner, a former manual arts teacher at Maleny State High School and retired on the range, immediately offered to design and build a timber lectern for use during presentations at the MDSRC clubhouse and Beersheba Living Museum. Lionel also quietly approached Maleny Rotary for a contribution to polish it off with the famous Rotary Wheel, and the other bits and pieces to be utilised in the design, which Rotary happily agreed to. The result was the surprise delivery of a beautiful piece made from local red cedar and tallowwood timbers, with the modern functional design reflecting Ron’s masterful timber work style.

been placed in local communities throughout Queensland and elsewhere. The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is hosting its final community lunch of 2020, which will start at about 12.30pm after the unveiling of the red bench. Despite large publicity campaigns many Australians still get sunburnt, with the Cancer Council highlighting that exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or solariums is responsible for about 95 per cent of skin cancers, the most dangerous being melanoma. The Melanoma Institute of Australia said that in 2019 there were more than 15,000 diagnoses of melanoma of the skin (that’s close to one diagnosis every half hour) and 1,726 deaths (that’s one every five hours). Melanoma is the third most common cancer in Australian men and the most common cancer affecting 15-39 year old Australians.

Prevention plays an important part in sun protection, as does ensuring you’re familiar with the signs of sun damage. Becoming familiar with the look of your skin and being aware of any changes that may suggest a skin cancer is an important step. More than 1,000 people packed Mooloolaba Beach last year for the inaugural Australia’s Biggest Bakslap event, aiming to get as many people as possible together applying sunscreen. COVID-19 may have put a dampener on our ability to come together this year but it hasn’t changed the impact of the sun’s harmful rays. To keep the message of sun awareness going, founder and creator of bakslap Raphael McGowan has taken the massive event from our beaches to our screens, with an interactive game allowing people of all ages to apply sunscreen and sun safety items to avatars. “The sun safety message, creating awareness around it and the sun’s potential dangers requires constant innovation, so this year we’re having a crack at a new approach,” Mr McGowan said.

“Anyone, anywhere on their phone or PC can show they are sun safe this year and help to spread the important message of keeping protected outdoors, especially this summer. “Our aim is to have as many young people as possible participating in the simultaneous sunscreen application game because they are at high risk for melanoma.” Mr McGowan plans to work with staff and students through the Department of Education in Queensland and other states to create a new, fun, interactive phonebased tech game about sun safety for kids. With Christmas just around the corner, the chance to come together as a community and celebrate with the joy of music is probably just what many of us need after a challenging year. Fortunately, we are spoilt for choice with a selection of excellent familyfriendly Christmas concerts this year. Maleny Commerce Christmas concert With the restrictions on outdoor dancing lifted, organisers of the event at Maleny Showground on Friday, December 11 are hoping to see lots of smiles and happy dancing at this community gettogether. Hosted by the Maleny Chamber of Commerce this event, from 6-10pm (gates open 5pm), will feature four hours of musical goodness and carols for the whole family. Local organisations will be providing food and drinks to purchase, and there is a stellar line-up of local talent offering a musical mix of country, blues and jazz, as well as Christmas-themed tunes (including traditional sing-along favourites and original compositions), and a not to be missed all-star musical finale.

The night will feature a Christmas choir made up of members from local churches, 30-piece Salvation Army brass band, and musicians Lucy Gallant, Kelly Cork, Gemma Kirby, Bobby the Kid, John Hunt and Georgie Germano. Tickets are just $5 with kids under ten free, but all attendees must register online to comply with the concert COVID plan. In keeping with the community Christmas spirit, a percentage of proceeds will be donated to Maleny Flexi School. The Maleny Singers concert is also on Friday, December 11, their annual Christmas concert will be at the Maleny RSL from 6.30pm. Featuring the delightful talents of the 24-member choir with Margaret Taylor conducting, the 90-minute evening concert will uplift and inspire the spirit of the festive season with traditional Christmas carols, glorious solo pieces and festive favourites sung in different languages. The singers will be donning their best bright and merry outfits. Entry is free but any donations towards a fundraiser for the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre

This year’s display is bigger than last year with the roof included and more inflatables, more lights and even some music.

If you haven’t had a chance to catch up with Santa before he gets down to business on the 24th, he’ll be making a stop at Skippy Park on Saturday, December 19 for some great afternoon fun. Community members are invited along to the free event which has been organised by First National Beerwah, who are keen to share the Christmas joy with locals in a COVID-Safe environment. Santa’s elves will be joining the big man on his throne offering free professional photos and handing out gifts to the kids generously donated by Deals and Dollars Beerwah.

The kids (and parents) will no doubt get into the Christmas spirit along with Santa and his helpful elves surrounded by giant reindeer and nutcracker statues. There will also be an impressive photo grotto backdrop for capturing some great Christmas snaps to share with family near and far. And to make the afternoon a little bit sweeter, there will be 100 Christmasthemed individually wrapped cookies. Feeling naughty or nice? Too often Christmas is all about the kids and the adults miss out. Well, this year the good folk behind NightQuarter have put together a totally unique adults-only pop-up Christmas experience at their ChristmasQuarter space.

All Things Naughty at ChristmasQuarter (NightQuarter Birtinya) lets adults have some Christmas cheer

The All Things Naughty event is on Thursday, December 10, Sunday, December 13 and Sunday, December 20. It’s an interactive Christmas cabaret experience with Santa’s little helpers taking visitors on the sleigh ride of their life in a tinsel-ating atmosphere. There will be glitz, glam, dance and comedy, and show-stopping performances on stage. The adults-only experience All Things Naughty provides an option to be entertained while sipping on cocktails and enjoying some cheeky Christmas fun. Who doesn’t love a handmade Christmas ornament hanging on their Christmas tree? You just know there’s been plenty of love and a little frustration put into the making of it - or is it a little love and plenty of frustration? Christmas crafting doesn’t have to be a big, grand experience for the kids. A few simple items, such as scissors,

clear glue or tape (bonus if you can find some funky coloured tape), coloured card or paper, and a set of coloured pens or markers can make for a fun crafternoon at home. Your local newsagent is bound to have everything you need to help get your craft kit started. You can even head out to the garden and take some inspiration from nature. Have the kids collect leaves, twigs, flowers, bark, stones - anything they find interesting - and incorporate it into their designs. Perfection is definitely not key when it comes to encouraging kids to be creative. Have fun and join in to enjoy the process of experimenting with different colours, textures, designs and tools with them. Who knows what amazing creations they’ll come up with!

Featuring the talented cast of 3bCreative, the audience will be treated to shenanigans from a very naughty dog, a chewed-up Santa suit, an overworked elf and, of course, Santa and Mrs Claus. Written by local theatre dynamo Anne Grant with Julie Bray, the play will feature original music by Marji Murray (Palmwoods Little Village Choir). The team from Beerwah CWA will be kept busy until this Friday, December 11, when the CWA Hall on Simpson Street will be transformed into a fabulous pop-up Christmas shop, which is open from 8am daily. The week will culminate in the Beerwah Tower Green Festive Market Extravaganza on Saturday, December 12, from 8am to noon. Skipper Musk Teahouse lookout With the end-of-year holiday season just around the corner, it’s a good time to head out and about to enjoy local day trips. With this in mind, GC&M News was inspired to explore the story behind one of our more intriguingly named hinterland vantage points - Skipper Musk Teahouse Lookout at Bald Knob. The lookout is named after two resourceful local women - Mrs Amelia Elizabeth Skipper and Mrs Daisy Georgina Musk (nee Dowcra) - who ran the teahouse during the 1920s not far from the location of the current lookout site. The teahouse was at the

Beech Street, Maleny. The Bald Knob land was leased until 1946 when it was eventually sold. During this time, Daisy and William purchased a dairy farm in Reesville until 1947 when they retired to Hospital Road (Tamarind Street) Maleny.

In those days, the original road from Landsborough to Maleny detoured from its current route. The old route was considerably steeper, rough and boggy, with undoubtedly challenging conditions for those who travelled along it. The teahouse was a welcomed respite for bullock drivers and those travelling to and from the Blackall Range. Local sources suggest the location was closer to the junction of Hovard Road and Ensbey Road near the Musk family house. Daisy married William Richard Musk in 1917 and emigrated to Australia from England in 1920 as a war bride. The couple settled at Bald Knob on Hovard Road where they grew bananas and William worked for the Tytherleigh family carting goods between Landsborough, Maleny and Caloundra. To supplement their income, Daisy and her neighbour Amelia established a rustic looking teahouse near their house to service the travellers and bullock drays. It is said that the bullock drivers would crack their whips as they ascended the mountain road towards the teahouse so the ladies were alerted to put scones in the oven! No doubt, for many the teahouse was a sight for sore eyes after an arduous journey. Later in 1930, the house on Hovard Road was

Keep our rural life

Sunshine Coast Council finds itself ‘in the red’ (blame it on COVID) and looks for ways to balance the books. Hey, there’s a developer who wants to turn a rural block into a housing estate in Landsborough but we need to rezone a large portion of blocks on Hardwood Road from Rural to Low Density Residential to accommodate. Never mind that two of the largest parcels are businesses employing local labour and all of the 14 blocks are already built on. Some have electrical easements and water pipeline easements traversing their blocks. Building under or over these easements is prohibited. Several blocks have an open stormwater drain crossing their frontages taking stormwater from the roofs of a nearby estate. Land owners have, at their own expense, improved these waterways and they are now home to brown ducks, whistler ducks, moorhen, bush turkeys, spoonbills, cranes and ibis. Migrating wildlife stop off on their journey as they know where they will be safe. We, the residents affected, chose to live in a rural location, away from the madness of constant development and yet, because of the greed of a developer who doesn’t even live in the area we are expected to go along with council’s zoning change to increase the rates input and destroy our chosen lifestyle. On the left is rural zoned Hardwood Road, on the right is a rezoned development close by where the stormwater drain was filled in, all trees gone and no habitat for local wildlife. Is this a real improvement or a criminal exercise in greed and environmental vandalism? The hinterland was once known as ‘the

lungs’ of the Sunshine Coast but with rampant development the lungs will soon be on their last legs. Having a Mayor who openly declares his involvement in “property” and “investment” must be a godsend to the hit-and-run developers who hover over the hinterland ready to pounce when the opportunity presents. Money is energy

Every dollar that we spend with multinationals bleeds our towns. Sure, our system and government is heavily geared towards feeding the billionaires but our consumer choices help create the world we want to see. This Christmas, spend locally at coops, farmers markets, local businesses, local artists and non-chains. Support the teenager down the road through babysitting or lawn mowing. The collapse of our local manufacturing industry is directly related to our spending habits and government policy. I have stopped giving material gifts to my family. I give them all a massage over the Christmas break. It’s always well received. Every dollar that we spend at Amazon, eBay, Bunnings, McDonald’s, BP, Santos or Apple helps to compromise our local economy. Some of it is unavoidable but let’s look to 2021 differently. Buy a water tank, put solar electricity on, buy less, become more content, buy second hand, grow veges and get to know your neighbours. Studies show that holding a yearly street party drops crime rates and helps communities bounce back quicker after disasters. Billionaires don’t care about you. Please support those who do. Oh, and please always support buskers. It encourages them to come back - music in the streets lifts spirits and creates community. Money is energy - put your energy where it gives the most joy. Slow progress

Forgive my mirth. Prior to our state election, I received in the mail a Queensland rail brochure propagandising the long-promised duplication of the rail line from Beerburrum and Beerwah, a portion of the eventual duplication to Nambour. It laid out the plan for the relocation of part of the track eastwards onto the road reserve for approximately 1km at the Beerburrum end of the project, and then continue to Beerwah on the existing rail corridor - a distance of approximately 8km. The timeline given for the completion of this project is four years. Reading elsewhere, I find that China has built and is using 12,500km of track per year for the past 20 years. That includes resuming the corridor, relocating communities and building on some of the most challenging geography, etc. At the rate of construction now in Queensland, I am thankful that our forebears, who worked with pick and shovel, horse scoops and carts, and hard slog achieved the construction of the other 6,600km of track throughout this state in the early 19th century. Greens left out

In the November 25 edition of GC&M News in Greg Brown’s wrap up of the state election he overlooked the other political party in that recent state election result - at least I couldn’t find any mention of it in his summary. While every other fact in his round up was fairly accurate, the Queensland Greens didn’t rate a mention at all. I do hope this was just a mere oversight and not something more sinister but I reckon that the Greens deserve at least a mention for having gained another seat and are now ahead of One Nation. Perhaps Mr Brown can make up for this mistake by contributing a nice article about the re-elected Greens MP Michael Berkman and the newcomer Amy McMahon to Queensland Parliament. Many voters seem surprised to hear that

No plans for Bunnings

With reference to letters in GC&M News from James Aitken on November 11 and Peter Bowles on November 25. It is a concern that many local residents are in support of the Coles Group proposal because they see the convenience of a Bunnings store in Beerwah. In late October, a number of questions were put to the Coles Group to clarify their plans for a homemaker/bulky goods centre. The response from Coles: * No plans for a Bunnings. * Any mention of Spotlight was just an example of a homemaker store. * Coles will establish only the supermarket and showroom, with the owners of the site to continue with later development of the fast food, fuel and homemaker centre. Without an anchor tenant such as Bunnings or Spotlight, it would be difficult to attract the more popular homemaker stores. With the completion of the Bells Creek arterial road, the Caloundra South shopping complex currently under construction will be within easy access of Beerwah - just eight minutes away. This centre of 90ha will be able to provide all the goods and services that Glasshouse Country residents are unable to access locally. This will eliminate many of the arduous trips to the coast that locals are forced to make and thereby leave Beerwah township intact. Meanwhile, should Coles see the need for another supermarket in the area, there is ample available land within the existing shopping precinct. Joan Tucker Glass House Mountains

Hinterland Families Maleny Playgroup Like many organisations, the Maleny Playgroup was forced to close from March-August due to restrictions. However, since reopening numbers have been increasing each week. We caught up with members of the playgroup committee to find out more about this community gem. Q: Maleny Playgroup has been operating for 40 years. What makes it so successful? A: Maleny Playgroup was started by volunteers and continues to be run by volunteers so it feels embedded in our community. It is a welcoming

place for new parents and those who have recently moved to Maleny. We meet every Wednesday morning during school term at the C&K Maleny Community Kindy in a space that is secure so parents can relax while their kids enjoy the playground equipment, sandpit and nature play areas. Q: How have your families adapted with the challenges of COVID? A: We were forced to close when the kindy closed in March and our committee had to collaborate with C&K to develop a COVID Safe plan to enable playgroup to reopen and continue to use the kindergarten space. When we reopened, we had some limits and additional hygiene measures but parents were so keen to return so this has been easily managed. Among our parents we feel there’s now even more value placed on our local community and connecting with other families, and this is part of an interest in keeping life simple and focussed on what matters most - family, friends and community. Q: What have been some highlights of the year? Reopening was a highlight and in September we organised a coffee morning for Mental Health Week.

Each mobile facility has a set run that looks after children in every type of school along the route. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year This has been a very difficult year for us on the Sunshine Coast, and I know that we are all looking forward to a well-earned break in the coming weeks. You should soon be receiving my 2020 Christmas card, which once again features a fantastic image of our region taken by a Sunshine Coast local and submitted to my Photos of Fisher competition. Inside you’ll find a handy magnetic calendar for 2021 with all the dates of the school and public holidays. You can detach that calendar when your Christmas cards come down and stick it on your fridge. Office closure My office will be closed from Thursday, December 24 until Monday, January 11. 2021 After a short Christmas break I will be launching the new year with my Fisher community awards and a series of February listening posts.

I hope you will have time this Christmas to reflect with pride on how Sunshine Coast locals have responded to this difficult year. For all of our challenges in 2020, I believe we should be more grateful than ever that we live in the best place on Earth, and I am looking forward with optimism to a better 2021. Budget Over the last week, the 57th Parliament of Queensland, steered by our Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, has passed a 2020/21 budget for Queensland. What does this budget mean for the Hinterland? I thought I would layout some of the projects being delivered in the Hinterland region over the next 7 months. We know school is the best place for the next generation of children to enrich their lives. That’s why this Palaszczuk Government will spend $40,000 to upgrade the junior playground at Beerwah State School.

As well as standing up for education, the Beerwah community fought hard to secure complete funding for a brand-new Community Meeting Place in Beerwah. I’m excited to announce that $1.49 million will be spent over the next financial year to fast track this community centre to be ready for use. Our lifestyle should be our priority and I’m glad to see it is the priority of the Palaszczuk Government. Mobile office My first mobile office will be held in Beerwah on January 12 from 9am – 1pm outside Woolworths, at the Beerwah Marketplace. I’m determined to stand up for the Hinterland and get on with the job of recovery. Straight back to Parliament we go Since my last column, Paul de Jersey AC, the Governor of Queensland, officially opened the 57th Queensland Parliament. This is one of the Governor’s most important duties as the Queen’s representative in the state. The opening of the first session always occurs on the second day the House meets following an election, after the Governor has summoned the Legislative Assembly, members have been sworn in and a Speaker has been elected and presented to the Governor. Many members, their partners and special guests gathered in Parliament House’s Legislative Council chamber to celebrate. The full ceremony entails a grand sense of occasion, including the Australian Defence Force conducting a traditional 19-gun salute at Kangaroo Point. This was followed up by budget week. And it will go down as a week of broken promises and missed opportunities. Throughout the election campaign, Labor continually told Queenslanders they would borrow $4 billion to pay for their election commitments. Instead, the Treasurer revealed borrowings would be seven times that amount at $28 billion. Equally concerning, there would be no additional stimulus investments. In other words, the additional borrowings will be used to fund recurrent expenditure – to keep the lights on! But I’ll be having more to say on this in coming weeks. Schools (almost) out! I know there are a lot of school graduations happening this week and I will be attending those I can. For a lot of kids this has been a rough year. Having to learn how to work from home, missing their friends and dealing with the general COVID stress they would’ve been picking up from the adults around them. So, happy graduation to all the graduating Glass House kids out there … you’ve earnt this Christmas break! Good luck in high school next year, I promise it’s not as scary as it seems. New project converting waste to energy I was extremely proud to launch an exciting environmental project in Division 1 last month - the Caloundra renewable energy facility at Bells Creek in partnership with LMS Energy, a leading renewable energy and emissions reduction company that will operate the facility. The facility will convert landfill biogas waste into electricity and generate enough energy to power 1,200 homes. It will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 41,000 tonnes each year, which is the equivalent to removing about 9,000 cars from the road. I think most would agree this project makes sense of our vision to become Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative.

Solar installation in Maleny Installation of the impressive new Maleny Showground solar system is now finished and it will soon be connected to the main power supply. The 99.9 kW system is estimated to produce 157,352 kWh each year, saving money and benefitting the environment. I would like to thank everyone involved. It’s a wonderful outcome for our community. The project was funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program. Road safety boosted Construction begins this month (weather and site conditions permitting) to upgrade three sections of Glenview Road at Glenview. All going to plan it will be finished by April next year. The project has received funding from the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program and will deliver a significant improvement for safe travel on this road. Section one will include footpath and road shoulder work at the S-bend about 500m east of Stevens Road and will include a new footpath, retaining wall, fencing and drainage works. Sections two and three will include new road edge guideposts, hazard signage, minor tree removal and digital warning signage to advise users of upcoming curves in the road. Have you ever wondered what makes that eerie, high-pitched wailing at night? The culprit is a large ground-dwelling bird called the bush stone-curlew (Burhinus grallarius). My partner likes to call them stick birds due to their insanely long skinny legs. These striking birds are members of the wader family. They are terrestrial, their ancestral habitat being open woodland, grassland, mallee, mangroves or rainforest fringes. However, they have been found to be amazingly adaptable, often making their nests in highly modified environments such as golf courses, rail reserves, roadsides with sparse vegetation, urban parkland and grazing land. Curlews prefer landscapes that give them good visibility at ground level, so they usually inhabit areas with bare ground or low ground cover and widely spaced trees and shrubs. Sites where the ground is covered with leaves, twigs, sticks, stones or sparse grass are preferred for nesting since curlews rely on camouflaged eggs and cryptic plumage to avoid predators. Stone-curlews have a generalist diet feeding mostly on invertebrates but also seeds, snails, frogs, lizards, mice and small snakes. Though common throughout the northern states of Australia, bush stone-curlews have been classified as endangered in New South Wales, threatened in Victoria and vulnerable in South Australia. A recovery plan has been developed in NSW outlining a range of actions that can be undertaken to conserve curlews (www.environment.nsw.gov.au/research-andpublications/publications-search/recovery-plan-forthe-bush-stone-curlew-burhinus-grallarius). These unusual and charismatic birds can live for 20 years. If you are lucky enough to have a pair of curlews nest on your property, make sure they are safe from your pets and from vehicles. Give them space and they will reward you with their gorgeous babies in 28 days.

Close encounters of a scaly kind

I wrote about my meeting with a tiger snake a few editions ago and asked readers to send me their stories of wildlife encounters and experiences. Ann Husband from Landsborough told me that she came across a snake recently and after seeing the photo in the GC&M News is pretty sure it was a tiger snake. “It was about 11pm and I was about to put some rubbish in the bin, which was on the footpath,” Ann said. “I put the outside light on and opened the front door, there was a snake a few metres away and when it saw me, it came straight at me so I quickly shut the door! “I’d never seen a snake with the colouring of this one and described it to my husband who said it was probably a python. “It was gone the next day and we haven’t seen any sign of it since but when I saw your article in the paper with the photo of the snake, well, it was exactly the same as the one I saw – no mistake! “The markings and colouring are really distinct. Sorry I wasn’t able to get a photo.” Ann said. It seems that Ann isn’t alone either. We posted the story on our Facebook page and others have told me of similar tiger snake sightings in the local region. These sightings are important as the tiger snake is now only found in a few spots along the Sunshine Coast and very rarely seen. Next edition, Paul Provic will share his amazing ophiophagy wildlife encounter (… look it up but, as Paul says, don’t get it confused with opiophagy).

However, Energex is encouraging people to remain electrically safe when stringing up those lights in the coming weeks. Energex’s Graham Burke said electrical dangers, ranging from electric shocks to house fires, were a real risk but could be easily avoided by following a few safety procedures when installing powered Christmas decorations. “Ultimately Christmas lights and powered decorations are electrical appliances and, like any appliance, if used incorrectly or if they are faulty, can be dangerous,” Graham said. “Likewise, most of us throw away faulty

home appliances or have them repaired by a qualified technician, and damaged Christmas lights and decorations are no different and can pose a serious risk. “So before plugging them in check for signs of obvious damage such as frayed cords and exposed wires. “If you’re satisfied they’re in good condition then plug them in and stay with them for five or more minutes to check concealed or less obvious faults aren’t at play and there’s no burning smell or damage occurring such as melting insulation.” Graham says you should also ensure that if you are using powered decorations on the outside of your

They lost their games 5-0. What an effort it was to make it to the final in their first outing in the Sunshine Coast League. Both Leo and Obi played with great sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Well done boys! Friday, November 20: The Wildcats had the bye. Whistlers played at Witta against Maroochydore Meteors. It was warm but a nice breeze came through. We had great games with two sets going to a tie-break. We didn’t get enough but it was good tennis. Score was 30-45 games, 2-6 sets. Team was Maree Hooley, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. Wednesday, November 25: It was a cooler day for tennis at Witta, where the Witta Wagtails played Maroochydore Sapphires. At the end of the day both teams had scored four sets. However, the Wagtails were pipped at the post by three games. Well done Wagtails for a great effort. Nick Cram and Gillian Bradley beat Donna Manning and Janelle Wilson 6–4, while on the Ted Singleton lawn (lawn two) Sarah Widin and Helen Andrews went down to Ken Barker and Wallace Roy 6–11. Thursday, November 26 wasn’t as hot as expected. Wallace and Ken played Vince and Val finishing narrowly ahead 11–9. Sarah had a win against Miggy Mackey 20-7 while on the same lawn a group consisting of Sally Adams, Janelle, Lynette Evans and Bev Sockhill played fast and loose in an unscored game with Donna as a roving coach. Afternoon tea turned into a surprise 85th birthday party for Vince with a cake smuggled in and presented. The last Sunday of November was hot. An unrecorded game was reportedly (by Wallace) 11–5 in favour of Wallace and Lynette against Donna and Janelle. Brett Gillis and Don Ginns narrowly missed getting the highest margin for the second game. Our last two Wednesday nights have been fast and furious with some competitive and friendly bowls. The finals of the twilight bowls competition are one week away and there are several teams with a good chance of getting a place in it. All teams have now won at least one game.

Beerwah Glasshouse United Football Club Last Wednesday, out of 14 teams, only two won both their games. Congratulations to the Wot Notts and Pegasus. Steve Lawrence and Dave Edwards won the touchers competition with Paul Kemp unable to get near them. This Wednesday, December 9, is the last round to determine who plays in the final. Tension is building and reputations are on the line. Scroungers on Fridays continues to attract players who are keen to brave the elements and improve their skills. We’ve had some variations to the playing format that have been popular and have kept us on our toes. Last week John Williams, Joe Walters and Brett Gillis played in a ‘final’ with Brett winning by a large margin. Other winners recently have been Sally Squires, Brian Squires and Liz Williams. As always, our volunteers continue to be the backbone of our club. They tend the green and grounds, prepare and cook the food, run the bar, deal with the administration and finances, clean the premises and, currently, paint the toilets! The club is strong because members step up and help out.

Round 5: The Glasshouse team hosted Palmwoods on a very hot day. Batting first, Glasshouse got off to a steady start. The top order all defended very well but found runs hard to come by due to a very tight Palmwoods bowling outfit. After being 4/33, Lexi Turner and Shilo Hill put together a 30-run partnership, with Lexi making 14 before being dismissed. Shilo went on to compile 20 and they finished at 7/76 after their mandatory 30 overs. The highly ranked Palmwoods team made short work of the target, winning in 16 overs. Anastasia Maher was again the pick of the bowlers, with 0/11 from her 4 overs and Lexi Turner was the only wicket taker finishing with 1/2. Round 6: The Rangers will travel to Cooroy looking for their first win of the season.

Opening bowlers Ash Topfer and Ella Fitzgerald both took wickets in their opening overs, getting the Rangers off to a good start. With Ella taking the next couple of wickets, Caloundra was looking shaky at 5/44 before putting on a partnership of almost 100. Anastasia Maher broke the partnership, bowling well to finish with 3/18, while Davina Stokes and Lexi Turner each bagged a wicket to see Caloundra all out for 145. The top order for the Rangers all struggled early, losing wickets regularly. Davina Stokes and Lexi Turner settled in for a partnership of almost 50 until Lexi was dismissed for 13. Davina was the last wicket to fall, being run out for a personal best of 22. The Glasshouse girls fell short of the total finishing on 93.
