arah, the youngest member of the GCNews office team, is heading overseas for the next few months, a trip that she has been planning for almost 18 months. During that time the rest of us have all been encouraging her to spread her wings and experience the fun and opportunities that travel brings. Damien’s determination brings results By Lea Parkes

What type of person do you have to be to enter a race that will take more than nine hours to complete? Well clearly if 24-yearold Glass House Mountains local Damien Collins is anything to go by, then the answer would be 'determined’. Damien recently returned from New Zealand after competing in the gruelling Ironman New Zealand at Lake Taupo, placing first in the 18 - 24 age category with a total time of nine hours 36 minutes and 24 seconds. He came 35th overall on a tough course which included a swim of 3.8kms, a bike ride of 180kms, and a full marathon run of 42kms, competing alongside 1,650 others including 42 professionals. This win now qualifies him to compete at the World Championships held at Kona (Hawaii) in October 11 along with two other competitors from the Sunshine Coast who trained with Damien. Scott Farrell placed 1st in age group 30 - 34 (time 9.15.01) and Jason Cheshire placed 7th in age group 40 - 44 (time 9.53.49). What makes his achievement all the more impressive is that this is only the fourth Ironman event Damien has entered. His first event was

Beerwah Queensland Museum scientists have

honoured wildlife warrior Terri Irwin by naming a new species of spider after her. Minister for Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts Ian Walker said the spider, Leichhardteus terriirwinae, was discovered by Queensland Museum research fellow Dr Barbara Baehr and senior curator Dr Robert Raven in the Mt Aberdeen region in North East Queensland. “It was the tenacity of this small spider that led Dr Baehr to name it in honour of Terri Irwin,” Mr Walker said. “The tiny spider is predominantly brown, with white legs and three white stripes, but don’t expect to easily find it as it’s less than seven millimetres long. “It’s one of a Queensland museum record 221 new species discovered in 12 months, including fish, geckos, snails, crustaceans, dung beetles, parasites, sea spiders, mites, an earthworm, insects and marine sponges and 104 species of spiders. “Discovering hundreds of unknown species in a single year puts the researchers at the Queensland Museum at the very forefront of international science news and will lead to a wealth of new scientific knowledge.” Dr Baehr said she could not think of a better name for the fast-moving spider.

Terri Irwin said she was honoured to have the beautiful spider named after her. “The Queensland Museum continues to inspire us all with new species regularly discovered, and Dr Baehr and Dr Raven are absolute legends with their passion for these special little creatures,” Mrs Irwin said. This is not the first time a species has been named after the Irwins. In 1997, the late Steve Irwin discovered a new species of turtle which he named Elseva irwini after his family and in 2009 a species of air-breathing land snail was named in Steve Irwin’s honour Crikey steveirwini.

Council concedes to State Government on planning scheme By Greg Brown Sunshine Coast Council last week relented and will now vote to include the Halls Creek area in the final Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme. The 1400 hectare land parcel, owned by the land developer Stockland adjoining their existing Caloundra South residential development, is one which the state government considers vital to the growth of the region. The State Government refused to sign off on the draft plan unless council included the area for future development. This position is at odds with the wishes of many business, tourism, recreation and environmental groups. Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce President, Bob McLean, in a letter to the Premier Campbell Newman, strongly opposed the Halls Creek development. In the letter, Mr McLean stated that the Chamber’s Bob McLean preferred position is to support growth in the established Glasshouse Country communities, with no expansion of the urban footprint into the fragile ecosystem of the Halls Creek area. “We believe that the established communities along the ‘railway corridor’ between Beerburrum and Nambour have a greater ability to deliver

economic growth for the Sunshine Coast than a Greenfield site with no infrastructure or community spirit,” wrote Mr McLean. “We believe that any development and infrastructure investment into the Halls Creek proposal will damagingly compromise the goals and aspirations of the Sunshine Coast community.” However, after a crisis meeting with State Government and in a sign of good-faith, council has agreed to include Halls Creek in the planning scheme and to vote on the issue at a Special Meeting to be held next Monday, April 14. As part of the agreement, state government will accelerate their investigation into the Beerwah Identified Growth Area (also known as Beerwah East) as well as the disputed Halls Creek area. According to the SEQ Regional Plan, the Beerwah East area includes land that is outside the Urban Footprint to the east of Beerwah and generally within one kilometre of Steve Irwin Way, running up to approximately the Big Kart Track. Once the hastened investigations are undertaken into these two future possible development districts, council and state government will be in a better position to look to amending the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme to include one, both or neither of the areas. Local Councillor, Rick Baberowski is optimistic. “In my view, there were two positive outcomes of the meeting,” he said. “First, the State has indicated their commitment

to maintaining a permanent inter-urban break between the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay, which is vital to maintaining our identity as a separate community and destination. Cr Rick Baberowski “They have promised that this isn't the first step towards further development, which could join the Sunshine Coast to a future ‘200 kilometre city’. “Second, the State has committed to engaging with the community and council on where the Sunshine Coast's long-term growth is going to go, and they are not simply using their powers to enforce their position.” Given those commitments, Cr Baberowski does not think it would be appropriate to further delay the planning scheme for the whole region and allow that to become a drag on our economy. “Whatever the plans say this year, this area is not projected to be developed until 2031, and there is still a lot that has to happen before that becomes a reality. “Importantly, the community is now more broadly aware of this issue, which was only one of a large range of issues dealt with in the planning scheme consultation, and a lot more people will now have their say directly in deciding the future of growth on the Sunshine Coast,” he said.

Beerburrum hall hosted the Long / Bullen family reunion on March 22 for relatives of Sidney Joseph Long and Gertrude Muriel Long (nee Bullen) who were long term residents of Beerburrum. As a number of relatives still lived within the area, and with relatives coming from Sydney, Murgon, Toowoomba, Brisbane, and Redlands, the reunion had a great turnout of nearly 70 people. With the oldest guest Sam Bullen in his 90’s and Mrs Betty Long (wife of Redmond Long, the post master) in her 80’s, the family were entertained with stories about their early days in Beerburrum. One memorable event from the reunion was when the family walked down the road to meet the current owners of their grandparent’s home - the original Beerburrum Post Office. Motorsports process marches on Last month, Steve Dickson, Minister for National Parks, announced the state government are going to establish a motorsports park in 534 hectares of the Beerwah State Forest (also known as the Mooloolah Logging Area), and pushed through with an expression of interest (EOI) process. With the initial stage of the EOI now closed, the Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing (NPRSR) are assessing those received to shortlist them for stage 2 of the process. Those shortlisted will be contacted by NPRSR and invited to lodge an ‘interest to offer’ (ITO), with submissions due by June 30. The government want – subject to planning and project approvals – to have work commencing on the site late this year with a view to the site opening for business by mid 2015. Actual site may not be suitable According to Narelle McCarthy from the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC), the state government appears to be unrelenting in their push for a motorsports precinct to be established in their pre-determined location within the Beerwah State Forest – no matter what the cost. “The list of the environmental values of this area is long and certainly dispels the description of it being ‘degraded’,” she said. The site is also recognised for its regional and state significance, it plays a vital role as a bioregional wildlife corridor. “So, even a ‘snapshot’ demonstrates the remarkable ecological values of the area, and shows how inappropriate it is for the intensive uses proposed,” she added.

Possibly throwing the proposal into doubt is the report that an earlier feasibility study appears to have been undertaken. This study looked at what the government wants to happen at the site and investigated whether it was feasible given the location and environment. From sources close to the proposal, GCNews understands that the study recommends against the development, concluding that what the government wants cannot be feasibly delivered at the Beerwah State Forest site. When asked about the details of the study and if a copy could be accessed, a spokesperson for Minister Dickson’s office would not confirm that a feasibility study has been done nor that it does or does not support the motorsports concept. However, they did confirm that “assessments” have been undertaken. But when asked for details, they replied that any documents feeding into the EOI process are currently confidential until the end of the EOI period. The SCEC are staggered that important documents are not being made available to those groups lodging an expression of interest. “Full environmental, cultural and social assessments with underpinning rationale should be fundamental to any proposal together with a full cost benefit analysis / business case,” said Narelle. “We will be calling the Government to account for wilfully destroying high value areas of the region’s conservation estate, particularly at a time of declining biodiversity, when there are clearly more appropriate alternative sites and other priorities for taxpayer funds and use public assets,” concluded Narelle.

Devastating news The recent media coverage of the deaths of a Glass House Mountains couple in their home in Allan Avenue, came as a shock for many in our local community. Sadly their young daughter, a Year 1 student from Glasshouse Country Christian College, has now lost both her parents; she is currently staying with her maternal grandparents, with whom she was staying with at the time of the incident. GCNews has not contacted the family out of respect for their privacy, but we know that there are people outside of the school community who would like to have the opportunity to support the young girl and her extended family.

Superstar fundraisers

Leo Petrie has taken up the challenge of ‘Shave for a cure’ once again. In total he raised $1,400.00 from a combination of donation boxes he placed in local Leo businesses, as well as on-line sponsorship and a highly successful fundraising night at Club Glasshouse. Leo was pleased to be able to encourage a number of other locals to ‘Be Brave and Shave’ on the night. For a couple of the fellas that included their underarms and chests. Leo, who loves his yoga, was also challenged to do the splits as part of the night’s fun – which saw him raise another $100.00. Leo would like to thank everyone for their support and to let you know he will be back again next year to help make a difference to the lives of people suffering from blood cancers.

Anglican Church Emergency Food Bank Due to the withdrawal of funding to BADYCC by the Government for one of its programs, BADYACC is operating only four days per week, Monday to Thursday. This has necessitated changes to the operation of the Anglican Church Emergency Food Bank. Food assistance will be available at BADYACC only from Monday to Thursday each week. In addition, food will be available only within the hours of 1.00pm to 4.00pm. Stall holders for kids market

Young stall holders are required to be part of the Kid's Market in Mooloolah. The market which will be organised and run by kids on May 4 from 9.00am - 12.00noon at Martin Rungert Park. The Kid’s Market is an opportunity for kids to have their own market stall and make some pocket money. Kids are welcome to sell home baked goodies, toys, books, clothes, plants, crafts and art. GCNews brought you the news last month that the Glasshouse Country RSL had a new committee, and since they’ve taken over, they have been keeping busy. For the month of March the club has been trialling the idea of serving lunch on Saturday, and brunch on Sunday. Sadly their wasn’t enough clientele to keep it going, however Friday night is going well and will continue. The bar is open at 5.00pm and meals are from 6.00pm, all are welcome. If you haven’t been in for a while make sure you head along soon, the food is really well-priced and it is a really relaxed night out. If you would like to join the club, for $10.00 you will receive life membership.

Planning is also in full swing for their ANZAC Day activities at Landsborough - Dawn Service 4.28am, assemble at 4.15am, at the RSL Park, Cribb Street, Landsborough. This will be followed by a Gunfire Breakfast at the Landsborough Community Hall. Later in the morning there will be the wreath laying service at 8.45am and a March from 9.00am. Assemble at Cribb Street in front of the Cenotaph. At Glass House Mountains, there will be a march along Coonowrin Road, and a service at the Glasshouse Community Hall. Assemble on the corner of Coonowrin Road and Page Street for the March to Glasshouse Community Hall at 11.25am. The club are also still in need of volunteers (see ad in our position's vacant section on page 36) as kitchen hands on a Friday night, as well as a permanent gardener.

Battery back up the way of the future BYD is leading the way with their long established Lithium battery manufacturing plant and the introduction of the new Battery Back Up System called “DESS” - Distributed Energy Storage System. BYD have been producing Lithium iron batteries since the early 1990’s and are the largest manufacturer of these types of batteries in the world. American business magnate Warren Buffett has so much confidence in their battery technology that he is the second largest shareholder in the company. Photovoltaic markets and technology journal pv magazine, featured the BYD Company in one of their editions, and spoke with Tom Zhao, General Manager of the BYD Solar Division. According to the article the company is teaming up with the Canberra-based utility AGL Energy to supply its panels to a 400 MW photovoltaic (PV) project AGL is building. As power storage becomes a key component of PV solutions, it explained that, given BYD’s combined expertise in PV and storage, they are perfectly positioned to provide comprehensive on and off-grid solutions in various markets. Others are also recognising the company’s multi-faceted energy expertise, with BYD being one of three finalists in the 2013 Zayed Future Energy Prize. BYD are tapping into the lithium iron phosphate battery technology it developed for its electric vehicles and then applying this to the energy field. General Manager Tom Zhao says the company has already distributed a number of these electricity storage solutions, with about half going to solar and other renewable energy applications.

What’s driving storage, and how everyone benefits? Not long ago, residential and small commercial solar users could count on generous government rebates and FiTs to offset their investment in solar. However, declining subsidies and rising electricity prices are pushing these solar power users toward battery storage, and the industry is responding with quality products. Solar generation can now be married to storage in ways that create true round-the-clock, cost-effective power flow, whether on or off-grid.

The off-grid, stand-alone products store electric power when renewable energy output is abundant, and then use the stored power when green energy is insufficient. Similarly, grid-coupled units save power from the mains supply during off-peak times when the price of power is low, and then use the stockpiled energy at peak demand time when the price of electricity is high. The net result in both instances is to reduce the overall price of electric power while optimising the use of lower-cost renewable energy.

Business Achievers recognised

By Lea Parkes Mark McArdle recently held a community awards ceremony to acknowledge a range of community organisations, businesses and individuals who are high achievers in his electorate. Interestingly both of the business categories were taken out by businesses on the western side of the Bruce Highway. Business Achiever of the Year went to Sue Joseph, owner of one of Queensland’s largest landscaping companies Basset Barks, and owner of the newly refurbished Daisy’s Place (formerly the Rustic Cabin), while Young Business Achiever of the Year was awarded to Daniel Moodie and Tara Smithyman, owners of Total Microsystems in Beerwah and who orchestrated the ‘Buy Local First’ in Beerwah in campaign. President of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce, Bob McLean said how exciting it was to have two of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce members recognised in Mark Sue and Kerstin from Daisy's Place McArdle’s community awards. “It is a pleasure to congratulate Sue with her team, as well as Tara, Dan and team, who lead the way with excellence. “These businesses are innovators and leaders in Glasshouse Country,” Bob said. In 2010 Sue purchased the Rustic Cabin, the oldest café on the Sunshine Coast and began an extensive renovation. The venue, now known as Daisy’s Place after the original owner, continues to be an iconic business, only these days with a more dramatic and stylish contemporary approach. Many people had suggested that Beerwah needed a buy local campaign and Tara and Dan decided that the town needed an approach that made sense and that could garner community support for the concept and the ‘Buy Local First’ Glasshouse Tara and Dan -Total Microsystems Country was born.

WIN or LOSE Opportunities for Glasshouse Country

The chamber lodged submissions to the 2013 Draft Economic Development Strategy and the Draft 2012 Planning Scheme, with council. Glasshouse Country communities are well serviced with existing infrastructure, including an underutilised rail transport system. The established communities between Beerburrum and Nambour have a greater ability to deliver economic growth for the Sunshine Coast than a ‘greenfield’ site with no infrastructure or community spirit. Balanced growth in the rail corridor will be more community and environmentally sustainable while protecting the fragile Pumicestone Passage. The chamber understood the approval for Caloundra South, but additional development South to Halls Creek is not warranted, and this extension will affect the enhancement of Glasshouse Country communities. Pumicestone Passage is the closest wilderness area to any capital city in the world and will be compromised by this further development into the flood plain. This proposal will compromise the March 2014 endorsement of the Pumicestone Passage Action Plan by Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast Councils and contributed to by the State Government. The three years of community work reflects the future management of the passage and this extension is not included (view Plan on GCCoC website). The final design of the planning scheme is still unknown; we trust the chamber’s request for balanced growth from infill, zoning changes and expansion of the Local Plan Areas will be supported. This includes affordable commercial land close to train stations, attracting new businesses and staff, breathing life into the Sunshine Coast’s Economy, being supported by the new Planning Scheme. The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce wishes to make it extremely clear that the position of the Sunshine Coast Council to retain the interurban break is supported. The chamber is also very supportive of the ‘Sunshine Coast First’ initiative of Mayor Jamieson to work with all government members representing the residents of the Sunshine Coast, to deliver a united, clear message. The chamber’s preferred position is to support growth in the established Glasshouse Country Communities, with no expansion of the urban footprint into the fragile ecosystem of the Halls Creek area. The Glasshouse Country Community now has another chance to have a say. The window of opportunity will be short. It is time to join in the debate, let those administrating the process know the outcome the community want.

Yertle the turtle not a good leader

School News Practical lessons learnt on camp Contributed by Kylie Merola Landsborough State School's Year 4 camp was held recently at Ewen Maddock Dam.

The camp program consisted of a range of personal development and team building activities including raft building, rock wall climbing, kayaking and bush exploration. All students were admirable in their behaviour and showed commitment to have a go at all activities. It was wonderful to see the students push beyond what they thought was possible. Whilst having fun, the students were learning about trust, teamwork and excellence and we saw some amazing leaders emerge through these activities. The students return as more resilient people, as they've had to cope with unfamiliar situations including taking care of themselves and their belongings and sleeping away from home. Raft building

Bullying no way! In the lead up to the recent National Day against Bullying and Violence, students from Beerwah State School have engaged in number of activities. The school chaplain, Linda Whysall ran a competition that involved the students creating a piece of artwork and paying an entry fee to win an ASUS Memo pad kindly donated by the P&C. Entries were very creative and varied, from drawings, posters, t-shirt decorations, to a ‘Stop Bullying’ banner and the production of movie clips.

These creations gave an opportunity for students to have conversations with parents, teachers and chappy about how we can all work together to get along and to stop bullying behaviours. The event culminated in an Orange Free Dress Day and classroom presentations about antibullying strategies and how we can all work together to create caring and safe environments.

When Glasshouse Country Christian College primary leaders were recently inducted into their roles they learned about bad leadership. Head of Primary, Mrs Cheryl Bryers took the example of Yertle the turtle from a Dr Seuss’ book to show how Yertle was a terrible leader. Mrs Bryers used the story of what Yertle did and how disastrous his leadership turned out to show the primary leaders what they shouldn’t do in their new leadership roles. Once the attributes of a good leader were described, it was time for the primary leaders to pledge their commitment and receive their new badges. The final stage of the formal ceremony is a very emotional one. Proud parents are invited to step down the front and pin the leadership badge on their own child. Some parents smile with pleasure, some cry with the emotion of the moment, but the one thing they all have in common is how proud they are of their child. Once the formal ceremony is over, student leaders and their invited guests enjoy a special morning tea with the pièce de résistance being a giant cake with 2014 Primary Leaders written on it.

Re: A concerned resident (GCNews March 26)

I would like to reiterate that community consultation was an integral part of Seqwater’s review of recreation at Ewen Maddock Dam and we continue to welcome community feedback on our facilities. Our review team received ideas and feedback from more than 250 people through information sessions, workshops, online surveys and submissions. In developing the new recreation guides for Ewen Maddock Dam, we have incorporated consultation feedback while ensuring a balance to maintain catchment health and water quality. Visitor safety was also an important consideration. We have already delivered a number of initiatives. The car park has been upgraded to provide designated trailer parking, and the pathway to the paddle craft launch point has been improved to allow easier pedestrian access to the water. Works to create washdown facilities for kayaks and canoes, along with a foot-wash tap, are underway and we expect the facility to be ready for use in April. We will install improved trail signage and we are also investigating how to improve access to the trail network. While the recreation review for Ewen Maddock Dam is complete, we encourage anyone with further feedback or questions about recreation at the dam to contact us at communications@ seqwater.com.au. In response to – ‘Not everyone is happy’ (GCNews March 26)

I totally agree with these comments. Since Seqwater took over, it’s been death by a thousand cuts for recreation at Ewen Maddock Dam. The recent recreational review was a master class by Seqwater in bureaucratic waffle and how to say ‘No’. Approximately 45 people within the community cared enough to give up six hours of their time to improve recreation at the dam. As outlined on their website, the outcome of this review is some signage you can’t read and a 10m2 area of concrete and fence to improve kayak access. Surely they can do better? The straw that broke the camel’s back was when they installed the barriers on the bottom track with no consultation. Even though Seqwater has stated that it was always a walking track, they have allowed other user groups (e.g. runners, mountain bikes, wheelchairs, prams etc.) to use the track under their watch. This is ‘implied consent’ by Seqwater. Did you consider the opportunities you took away from children and those in wheelchairs prior to installing the barriers. Obviously, ‘NO’. If Seqwater actually engaged with the community, they would realise people aren’t happy. The best way forward may be to vote out the current Newman state government and install a new state government that listens to the people with the hope that they will conduct an organisational review / restructure within Seqwater. Wow, Skippy Park

A big thanks to all those who have played a part in the development of Skippy Park. A huge amount of work has gone into this project since late 2009. There are now modern toilets and barbecues with shelters which are becoming increasingly popular with family groups. The fields are regularly being used for low key sporting events such as little athletics. And around the perimeter there is a glorious wide 2.2km criterium (cycling) track. Not only is it used for walkers and taking dogs for walks, it is ideal for general bike riding and for children learning to cycle. And as keen cyclists, we use the track for training or to do a few laps before heading up the mountain. Then there is the Natural Play Space with sandpits, climbing trees, flying foxes and a rope climbing structure. The latest stage – the embankment slide – is turning out to be a beautiful work of art. As a sports and recreational area, Skippy Park is an absolute gem, a gift to the community. Mary Garden Beerwah

Farmers on Film

I would like to let GCNews readers know about a wonderful project I helped sponsor last year on Pozible (a crowdfunding website) it is called Farmers on Film by a Melbourne man, Mick Russell. Mick is getting videos of farmers from around Australia, showcasing how the food you eat and the fibre you wear is produced and to tell the stories of farmers their way. In January this year I showed Mick around our local area from Eumundi to Kenilworth and Maleny but especially around our local Glass House Mountains area. He is very keen to get a pineapple farmer, a lychee farmer, a macadamia farmer and any other farming operation in the local area. I have offered Mick my assistance to go out to farms to assist in the filming or just to deliver one of the camera kits he has in circulation around the country. On the morning of Saturday, March 29 my family and I happened to see a plane above us in Beerwah which had trails of vapour coming from both sides of the plane. It did a long trail and then disappeared behind cloud. This wasn't a sign-writing plane as all it did was a straight line and it didn't seem to be contrail as is didn't quickly vaporise. This line slowly spread out and turned into a haze in the sky above us. I am curious if anyone else saw this plane and what it could be spraying? Marilyn Podmore Beerwah

I would like to congratulate council on the excellent job it has done in upgrading Simpson Street and providing more off road parking for the shops. The street looks great and is a huge improvement on that which was there before. I watched with nervous anticipation as dark clouds moved towards the road sealing work that was getting underway on Simpson Street last week. The timing couldn’t have been worse as there was a huge amount of crew and machinery on site and they had just one night to complete the work. It was absolutely crucial that the substrate material didn’t get saturated prior to the seal so the race against the weather was on. A last minute decision was made to start work at the Aldi end of town and I sincerely regret the impact this unexpected change of plan had on local traders. Fortunately, the rain held off long enough for the seal of the exposed substrate material to be completed that night and the project now continues towards completion of the last stages of civil works.

I’m very excited to announce council is opening an exciting new bushwalking track at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden, adding a new experience to the Garden’s network of walking tracks. Around 6 km of paths and trails, help visitors explore and appreciate the Garden’s diverse bushland environments, including wetlands, fern glades, forests and rocky creeks. The soon to be opened 1.6 km long Upland Bushwalk will lead fit and experienced walkers across serene creek crossing and steep forest slopes. The Future of Agribusiness on the Sunshine Coast conference was a really interesting insight into the emerging new opportunities that exist in the region for the agricultural industry. A stand-out example is that when the new public hospital at Kawana is fully operational there will be an estimated minimum of 750,000 meals needed per year. That’s going to mean an incredibly big and consistent demand for local (low food miles) produce of a high standard. The value of the local food industry is also recognised by being nominated as an essential sector in council’s overall economic strategy. In addition, council's new Planning Scheme has been designed to protect much of our agricultural land to achieve the right balance with the demands for urban development and with our natural environment. Essentially, the new Planning Scheme sets out the communities planned land use to avoid urban sprawl, while achieving urban development that can co-exist with our agricultural activities long into the future. The conference confirmed that the community expects that our rural industries will remain a part of the long term land character of the region and continue to be a part of our region’s social and economic fabric for many generations to come.

Unfortunately there is no ‘Magic Bullet’ of health, natural or man-made, that will ever cure all of our health ailments. Mooloolah Community Garden

Have you always wanted to have the benefits of having a home garden but either don’t have the room or the know how? Did you know that Mooloolah has its very own community garden located behind the Community Centre and that it’s open to everyone to come and share? With a common goal of bringing people in the community together through a shared garden space, the community garden is a great way to meet other locals, learn more about gardening tips and to grow food together. Open every Saturday from 2.30pm until 5.00pm (though regular members can go anytime they like) and it’s free to join. At present the whole garden is shared between volunteer members, however garden beds can be allocated for individual use. It’s a great way for community members both young and old to socialise and vacancies exist now for members / families to join in. Recently the garden had a hugely successful working bee and the garden is now prepped and ready to plant and grow. Beds have been topped up with mineral rich soil, the worm farms are about to be started up again, and the watering systems are looking to be revamped. How do you value a life?

Something that really saddens me is when people don’t value themselves or other people. This is more common than you may think – in fact I would say that everyone struggles with this to some degree. If we don’t value ourselves we spend our whole life using a heap of defence mechanisms to protect us – masks, humour, busyness, restlessness, anger, alcohol, work, helping people even! Or we live everyday putting ourselves down or even hating ourselves. The good news is that amidst all this hurt and chaos there is a loving God who wants to restore us and heal us. I recently was shown an amazing clip on Youtube that gives us a glimpse of the amazing love of God. The clip is about a father who has a severely disabled son. Doctors had written the boy off and suggested he be put in an institution but his dad wanted more for his son. Club professional John Mellish was on hand to present his trophies to the three winners. Fay Barry took out the Division 1 medal with 73 Nett followed by Gail Gundry on 74 Nett. Andrea Campbell had the best Gross with 89 off the stick. Winner of Division 2 was Shirley Cooper with a very nice 70 Nett. Shirley was followed by Lesley Eggleston on 73 Nett. Ladies President Monica Dangerfield took out the Gross prize with 96 off the stick. Jan Corfield won the Division 3 medal with a 72 Nett. Runner up was our own Joan Harvey who

Continued from page 3 Damien’s dad, Brad Collins from Glasshouse Country First National Real Estate and mum Cris (former owner of Beerwah Shoes) were at the finish line at Lake Taupo and were clearly very proud of Damien’s achievement. Cris said Damien had always rated himself as a ‘mid range’ athlete. He has always been actively involved in sports including Little Athletics from age five – 10, BMX riding with the Hinterland Club from nine to 14, as well as participating in Adventure and Mountain Bike racing for a year 2012 – 2013, she said. Damien is also a keen surfer and in Year 10 he took out the first place in the Beerwah State High School Triathlon. With all of the travel and competition costs, it’s definitely not an inexpensive sport to be involved with, and Damien said he really appreciates all the businesses that have supported him this far. In particular he wanted to thank the local support from Di Feldman of Di's fitness and massage, Fitness Matters Gym Beerwah, and Courage Civil and Hire from Mackay / Peachester for the donation to help with funding.
