Powerhouse of the local community By Sonia Clark Long-term Peachester resident Bruce Page was recently awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in recognition of his services to the communities of Beerwah and Peachester. This award follows recognition in 2003 of a Centenary Medal for his long voluntary service to the Peachester and Beerwah communities. Modest about his considerable achievements, Bruce would much prefer to deflect attention away from himself and gently steer the spotlight onto the achievements of the organisations or the efforts of others. Bruce said that it was understandably an honour to be recognised in such a way but he was not sure he really deserved to be singled out. “I feel a bit embarrassed that I’ve been made a fuss of, as you never do any community work on your own. Over the years there have been many good people who have also contributed greatly, and who also deserve to be credited. I’m not sure I deserve this recognition but I am grateful for it,” Bruce said. He also pointed out that while he may be uncomfortable with individual
praise, he was very pleased that the numerous organisations he’d been involved with had been recognised in various ways throughout the years for their commitment and the value they added to the local community. Some of the groups and organisations that Bruce has been a part of, many as either a foundation member or executive member (often both), include an incredible 49 years of service to the Beerwah Charity Sports Committee, 42 years to the Peachester Rural Fire Brigade and 21 years membership of the Peachester School P&C committee. Bruce was also a former state president of the Young Country Party, a former executive member of the Liberal National Party Queensland (formerly Country Party of Queensland) with more than 50 years involvement, a member of the steering committee to establish Beerwah State High School and a commitment of more than 40 years to the Peachester Hall Committee, to highlight just some of his service. This is all in addition to being an active dairy farmer for more than 60 years, husband, father and grandfather. Bruce said that when he started out it was a different community around the
area – much more farming oriented and everyone knew one another. Back then, Bruce said, if you wanted something done for your community you had to get in and do it yourself. “There were no handouts from the council or government. If you needed something in the community, you pulled together to make it happen. A big difference was that everyone lived, worked and socialised in their community. Now many people work elsewhere and just come home to rest. People seem to have very little time to be involved, as their interests are now often somewhere else,” Bruce said. Bruce hopes to continue his community activities, and while he has some concerns that changing standards, membership involvement and a post COVID-19 world may pose some future challenges for community organisations, he is optimistic and hopeful that others will realise the immense personal and greater benefit of community involvement.

Restrictions eased, border plan in place The Queensland Government last week announced a further and faster easing of restrictions across Queensland that kicked in on Friday, July 3. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said anyone travelling from Victoria, including Queenslanders, would be prevented from entering Queensland unless they quarantined at a hotel at their own expense for two weeks. The state’s borders would be opened to visitors from other states from this Friday, July 10. Ms Palaszczuk said Queenslanders’ continued efforts in uniting against COVID-19 had paved the way for a further easing of restrictions, allowing more people in more places and more events a week earlier than expected. “We have seen more than 250 cases of COVID-19 in Victoria over the past week and there is sustained community transmission there,” the Premier said. “We cannot risk removing our border restrictions for those people coming from areas in Victoria right now. To do so would jeopardise everything we have all sacrificed so much to achieve and could be catastrophic to our entire
economy.” When the borders to other states are open travellers will have to complete a border declaration stating they have not been to local government areas in Victoria in the previous 14 days. “We have said all along that we would take sensible, measured steps to easing restrictions for Queenslanders and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” Ms Palaszczuk said. “If there is an outbreak in any state, we reserve the right to review the border again.” Deputy Premier and Health Minister Steven Miles said the accelerated relaxation of restrictions would collectively mean a greater return to normality for all Queenslanders. “For small businesses like restaurants and cafes, for couples getting married, for young people wanting to celebrate their 21st at home, for community sporting teams and their spectators, for sports fans, museum goers and event managers, life has gotten easier,” he said. The new stage three measures include:
• Private gatherings up from 20 to 100 people in homes – great for special birthdays and celebrations of milestones. • Wedding attendance increases from 20 to 100 (and the reception size increases too). • Contact indoor and outdoor community sport starts with an approved plan. • Events of more than 10,000 people require a COVID Safe event plan approved by the Chief Health Officer. • Additional venues such as casinos and food courts to reopen. “The four square metre rule per customer applies across the board with no ceiling, and no need to divide customers into smaller groups,” Mr Miles said. “For small businesses, we will relax the four square metre rule allowing up to 50 customers for a venue below 200 square metres in size, provided they keep a register of customers. For example, a 100 square metre café can currently have 25 patrons, with five of them
in a separate area. Now they can have up to 50 patrons,” he said. “Patrons will be able to go to the bar to collect food and drink – meaning faster service at many locations.” For more information and a full list of measures under the roadmap to easing Queensland’s restrictions visit www.covid19.qld.gov.au.

Safety upgrades on for Steve Irwin Way With the steady growth of the Glasshouse Country region since the days when the old Bruce Highway became the Glasshouse Mountains Tourist Road (and then the Steve Irwin Way), locals have been calling on all sides and levels of politics to commit to funding improvements to this critical main arterial road. The enhancements that have been made have greatly improved the safety and usability of the road - the traffic lights at Bowen Road, the Roys Road intersection, the lane separation through Landsborough and Glenview, just to name a few. In the longer term, plans are in place for dual lanes and to realign the road. These plans were originally tied to railway upgrades, which seem to be inching closer with each election. However, recently the federal Member for Fisher, Andrew Wallace, announced an infrastructure stimulus spending package that will see an injection of $18 million for safety upgrades to Steve Irwin Way to get under way by September and be completed by the middle of next year.
The project is collaboratively funded by the federal and state governments and the work will be planned and undertaken by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). A spokesperson for the Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the funding would be for a road safety package for Steve Irwin Way between Beerburrum and Palmview. TMR will undertake a study of the road corridor to identify safety concerns and then prioritise improvements such as safety barriers, widening of shoulders or centre medium strips, sound motion line markings and removing roadside vegetation hazards. Following the announcement, GC&M News put the question to our Facebook followers to see what safety projects they would like to see and we had 80 responses, so clearly there are issues that concern many readers. There was a wide range of suggestions including quite a few for a bike track and footpaths, particularly linking Beerwah and Glass House Mountains but
also for the whole stretch from Landsborough to Beerburrum, dual lanes, traffic lights, roundabouts, turning lanes, speed changes, speed signage and dedicated turning lanes. We also asked each of the candidates in Glass House and Caloundra for the state government election in October what issues they believe most need addressing on Steve Irwin Way.
Some of the comments from our Facebook followers Bike lanes/paths, footpaths Ken York, Kerrie Foster, Rebecca Mackintosh, Alison Goodhand, Natalie Hazelden, Linda Moir, Troy Lackey, Hanna Brandli and Seija Lepisto were all keen to see improved bike paths/lanes.
Dual lanes Andrew Milne wants dual lanes the whole way or more overtaking lanes. Either way a full reseal would be great as there so many patch ups jobs done. Dave Brown would like dual lanes going south and north with bike lanes. Brett Hughes had particular
concerns with the section between Glenview to Landsborough being dangerous, especially at night.
Australia Zoo intersection There were safety concerns around the intersection at Australia Zoo, with Margaret Johnson suggesting “a roundabout or lights be installed”. Cheryl Parker reckons lights at Australia Zoo are a necessity as she is sick and tired of tourists not taking other traffic into consideration. Jane Erator suggested that the speed limit be slowed to 60km in front of the zoo and Dave Brown wants a roundabout.
Fruit shop/Pineapple Patch Sonia Heilig and Jason Eade would like to see safer access to the fruit shop/Pineapple Patch with loads of people using both places and accidents are foreseeable. Jane Erator suggested reducing the speed limit to 60km in that area.

we want to maintain the rural look and feel then traffic should be slowed down with no loss of vegetation and wildlife habitat. He also wanted a walk/bike path connecting the length of road.
Speed things up Adrian Cox and Melissa Sanna would like the road to go to 100km/hr all the way. Melissa also suggested overtaking lanes for those of us on our way to work who get stuck behind the tourists!
Turning lanes/exits Andrew Gauntlett would like one at Tobacco Road, Beerwah. Kaye Ziser suggested one for Endeavour Road, Beerburrum. Annoeska Van Vuuren would like to see a northbound turning lane into Barrs Road, Glass House Mountains, as well as some no standing signs along the southbound overtaking lane into Barrs Road. Penny Newman wants dedicated turning lanes for side streets, in both directions of travel, not the slip lanes. Also, an exit to Hardwood Road near Pioneer Park would be good with all the new estates and only one
entry/exit at the lights getting ridiculous.

Speed signs Aleisha Brownie would like more speed signs so people know what they should be doing, and Elise Mary said more than one speed sign was needed once it goes to 100km.

he would love to see the entire length of Steve Irwin Way duplicated, as it is in the north. However, he said the immediate priorities were improving the intersection with Beerburrum Road and improving the surface and width between Reed Street and Back Creek Road.

Club Glass House is excited to let the members and regular visitors to know that the club has reopened after what feels like three long months. At GC&M News we don’t like to play favourites with any of the businesses that we work with and who advertise with us but it is a little hard when we are talking about our next door neighbours. Our office is in front of Club Glass House, so while I am not saying our work drives us to drink we do notice that Lea and Brownie seem
to enjoy heading down to the club’s dining area for ‘staff meetings’ fairly regularly. The club re-opened at 12noon last Friday for the bar, Keno and pokies, and dining on Friday night with a limited menu. It will be fully operational again on July 10 with a new menu, and due to limited numbers bookings are essential. For the first week the club will also be operating on limited hours, Friday 12noon - 8 pm, Saturday 12noon 7pm, Sunday 12noon - 5pm, closed Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 12noon - 5pm and from Friday July 10 12noon – late. Business News Pride of Workmanship awards The Rotary Club of Maleny is proud to relaunch its Pride of Workmanship awards program in 2020 after a number of years hiatus. The idea to reinstate the program was first suggested earlier this year by longstanding club member and past president Alan Wilson. Nominations are now open for the awards, which provide an opportunity for local Maleny businesses and organisations to celebrate the efforts of individuals in their place of employment. The club’s vocational director, Paulette Steele, said given the current environment post COVID-19 and the challenges that many businesses and organisations have faced in recent months, the awards were a perfect opportunity to acknowledge the fantastic job that people in the local community have been doing in their workplace. “People often don’t get recognised for all the hard work they do in their place of work, and this is a lovely way for businesses and organisations or even a member of the public to nominate someone to let them know just how appreciated and valuable their contributions are,” Paulette said.
Nominations involve a short, written response to the award selection criteria to show a demonstrated pursuit of excellence in work practices, customer service or standard of service delivery, as well as quality of personal attributes. Rotary president Greg Williams said the awards were a wonderful way to acknowledge the excellence in the workplace of local employees or volunteers, with every nominee receiving an award at the presentation night scheduled for Saturday, August 29, at Tranquil Park Maleny. “One of the great features of the Pride in Workmanship awards is that it isn’t a competition between nominees but is about recognising the individuals’ achievements, the valuable contributions they make in their workplaces, and the excellence they exhibit in undertaking their job,” Greg said. Amanda Kennedy from Maleny Library nominated staff member Gayle Pope, who has been working at the library for the past 5½ years, for her “diligent, professional and delightful efforts”. Amanda said she had put Gayle forward for an award as she

Glenview water park gets council tick The water park/resort development at Glenview took a step closer to becoming a reality recently with Sunshine Coast Council approving the latest change to development plans. Sanad Capital – the site owner and developer – lodged the changed plans for the Steve Irwin Way site in January, proposing that the development start with a 160 self-contained unit resort complex, a scaled-back water park and associated retail, dining, leisure and recreation facilities. The original wave pool complex is not part of this stage of the approved plans. The approval comes with strict conditions, with the council stating that all accommodation must be short term for tourists and must not be occupied permanently. The self-contained units cannot be
owned or leased individually, with the complex being managed as a single entity. The retail stores can only be associated with a resort and tourist attraction, and cannot include shops such as corner stores, department stores, discount stores, high volume convenience restaurants, supermarkets or outlet retailers/factory outlets. Importantly, the approval has a six-year sunset clause where the development must be completed by 2026 or the approval is revoked. The conditions also state that the resort complex cannot operate until the water park component is constructed and operational. I think it will be no surprise to anyone when I say that a lot of us (maybe most of us) are sick and tired of the relentless COVID-19 updates, and the relentless negativity being aired, published and promoted every day. There comes a time when we have to say enough is enough, let’s get on with life and make the best of it. It is not doomsday even though we are living through a very challenging time, especially for businesses, but hey, life goes on and businesses adapt very quickly as they have shown during the past few months. You, our members, have clearly shown that you are innovative, responsive and very, very adaptive. Certainly, some of the changes that had to be implemented during this crisis will remain, some will be extended and some will be eliminated.
Our business community will pick out changes that will benefit their operation and let go of all the other stuff. Larger enterprises have learnt that workplace locations can be varied without losing any of the efficiencies. I would like to see more decentralised business locations, which would reduce commuting, reduce the environmental impact of excessive car use and give employees the chance to spend more time with their families. Maybe, just maybe, COVID-19 has cleared the path to a more sustainable business culture. There have been numerous government changes as of July 1 to superannuation, an amnesty for unpaid super contributions, paid parental leave, etc. Please check with your accountant how these may impact on your business.

Community News Donation by hospital auxiliary Despite the challenges imposed by months of lockdown and the resulting restrictions on normal fundraising activities, the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary has still been able to fund about $13,000 worth of equipment this year for the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital’s emergency department and wards. Auxiliary president Louise Hickey said the association, like many others, had not been able to conduct its normal monthly meetings since late February 2020, though they had maintained contact with members through regular newsletters and updates. “Usually the auxiliary would have conducted several fundraising events this year already. However, due to a strong financial position they were fortunately still able to proceed with funding for four pieces of equipment that will enable staff to treat patients at the hospital and not have to transfer or send them by ambulance to the Sunshine Coast or Caloundra hospitals,” Louise said.
“Prompt medical attention and vital time-saving action is crucial for our local and wider community to be treated on home turf, especially for the relatively simpler procedures, and now more than ever due to the current climate people are keener to stay closer to home. “While lockdowns have affected many people, the hospital hasn’t stopped and so we were very pleased we were able to continue to support their needs,” she said. The purchases were made following advice from the acting director of nursing/facility manager David Sprigwood, and medical superintendent Dr Kris McQuaid, who along with their team advised the auxiliary of their equipment needs, which are usually not included in their yearly allotted budget. This year the auxiliary was pleased to fund the purchase of a Reichert Tono-Pen AVIA, a handheld device popular in the ophthalmology field due to its ease of use, a Devilbiss Oxygen Concentrator, a vital signs monitor with stand and BP

cuff, and an ophthalmic burr set, used for the removal of foreign bodies on any part of the body particularly in the eye area. Louise said these four recent equipment purchases for the hospital would cover numerous patient issues and provide the medical staff with additional resources for correct diagnosis. Some good news for Show Society
Native bees inspire
The Maleny Show Society, like all community-run organisations, has been dealing with the challenges thrown at them by the COVID-19 crisis but there has also seen some good news. Show secretary Lois White said the Sunshine Coast Council recently agreed to provide funding for the society to replace the chairs in the show pavilion. “While the chairs that are being replaced have been used for multiple decades, they will now be relocated and used in a different part of the showgrounds,” she said. The federal Minister for Agriculture, Drought and Emergency Management David Littleproud last week also announced that the Supporting Agricultural Shows Program would provide a one-off reimbursement to agricultural show societies to deal with cash flow pressures caused by the COVID-19 related cancellation of agricultural shows.
Creativity is drawn from all aspects of life and for the very talented Caroline Springate local Beerburrum business Hive Haven was the inspiration for her latest crocheted creation and entry in the 2020 Alice Springs Beanie Festival. The entry, a crocheted top hat entitled ‘Hive Haven Native Gold’, was inspired by the wonderful work Ann and Jeff Ross from Hive Haven do towards building a commercial future for the Australian stingless native bees. Caroline said her creation took a couple of weeks to complete and she presented it to Ann and Jeff last year. “With all the success of their 3D printed bee boxes, I wanted to gift Ann with something unique - a one of a kind top hat featuring stingless native bees and their new boxes and stands,” Caroline said. “Ann and Jeff are truly inspirational in their efforts to save the bees, so I thought a one of a kind beanie gift would be perfect. “With Ann’s okay I entered it in the Alice Springs Beanie Festival competition.” This year the international festival has moved to an online platform and voting is now open.
“This funding supports not only the big royal shows in each capital but right down to the small country show, because we acknowledge the role shows play in connecting agriculture and regional Australia to metropolitan Australians,” Mr Littleproud said. Lois said the Maleny Show Society could apply for up to $70,000 from the program to help cover operational costs. “Work now has to be done by the committee to consider costs for the entire year as well as preparations for next,” she said. “It will hopefully keep us and other shows viable into the future. “It’s going to be hard to even expect people with cattle and horses who are also doing it hard to be in a position to exhibit and show this time next year. “Our shows could look different in coming years but hopefully with the current support we can at lease stay afloat,” Lois said.

There was lots of catching up while enjoying morning tea and Suella and John showed off recently accomplished projects. As their soil is very poor, they constructed wicking beds for growing veges. During lockdown, they hosted two overseas students through Workaway Overseas. In exchange for two weeks food and board, the students constructed a gabion wall 30m long. Impressive. We had our usual competition bench and raffles with plenty of comments and advice about the entries. Visitors and new members are welcome to join us on Thursday, July 16 at 9.30am in the garden of Remy McLennon. Bring a plate to share for morning tea, mug and a chair. Probus will be back and meeting on Wednesday, August 12 with our new social distancing practices in place. Our last meeting was in March so there will be a feeling of euphoria to be back – almost to normal. Sadly in June our club recorded the death of one of our founding members, Fred Gamgee. Fred was a long-term resident and prominent fruit grower in the Glass House Mountains district. He was a friend to all and at the age of 94 was still an active member of our club. At the August meeting we plan to formally welcome two new members and ask those attending to please bring their cup for smoko. Anyone interesting in fun, friendship and fellowship is invited to come and meet with us on the second Wednesday of the month at the Glasshouse Country RSL at 10am.

The University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) will become the first university in Queensland to hold an open day in a COVID-Safe way, encouraging people to visit its website instead of its campuses for this year’s annual event. On Sunday, July 19 the USC staff and students will be available from 9.30am-12.30pm for online chats about the degrees on offer and what life is like at the university. There will also be a wide range of presentations, including question-and-answer video sessions, step-by-step guides on how to apply to study and virtual tours of USC’s facilities on its campuses from the Fraser Coast to Moreton Bay. Pro vice-chancellor (engagement) Professor Joanne Scott said the event aimed to provide those interested in studying at USC and their families a personalised experience similar to what they would have enjoyed if coronavirus restrictions were not in place. “Open day has always been an opportunity for people to have a look around campus, find out all they need to know about our study programs and gain a better understanding of what’s involved in being a university student,” she said. Life on the Pacific Crest Trail GC&M News last week (July 1) featured the first part of an adventure story about Stephanie Hunt’s 2018 hike tackling the formidable Pacific Crest Trail in the USA. The 4,260km trail took Stephanie 155 days to complete through sometimes unfavourable conditions, including tackling heavy snow, thunderstorms and hail, hiking through heavy smoke, dodging fires and taking several detours.This week we find out more from Stephanie about what life was like on one of the world’s most spectacular trail hikes. Q: How did you stock up on supplies? A: Resupplies were generally about a week apart (sometimes just a few days and sometimes up to ten days) and usually involved hitchhiking from a road crossing in the middle of nowhere to the nearest town. On the other hand, trail magic, is when you encounter a trail angel offering water, cold drinks or food on the trail or at a trail head, which was a very welcome sight indeed. Q: Can you describe a typical day as a hiker? A: I was a slow hiker and life on the trail generally started at sun up (or earlier if I was Halfway point at Crater Lake

hiking through a valley and it was forecast to be very hot) and I walked continuously at a pretty leisurely pace of around two miles (around 3km) per hour for about 20-25 miles (32-40km) before setting up camp, eating and going to sleep, usually before dark at around 9pm in summer. I stopped briefly during the day but often ate while I walked. I didn’t hike with a stove and ate only cold food on the trail. Breakfast was cold soaked oats, nuts and seeds, during the day I ate granola bars, protein bars or meat bars, and for dinner I ate either cheese and salami, summer sausage or tuna and cold rehydrated mash potato followed by a Snickers. Q: What was in your pack? A: My pack was fairly light, weighing less than 7kg. In my pack I carried a down quilt, an inflatable sleeping mat, an inflatable pillow (that I later ditched), a small tent, a ground sheet, a sit pad, warm base layers to sleep in at night (no other spare clothes other than a spare pair of socks and undies), a beanie, a puffy, a wind jacket, a very small toiletries pack (toothbrush and paste, lip balm, sunscreen – no brush or soap), a small first aid and repair kit (a couple of band aids, ibuprofen, Panadol, a couple of antihistamines, a needle, floss for stitching, patching tape and a small multi tool) and an electronics and navigation kit (head lamp, battery pack, phone cable and plug, compass).
At the summit of Mt Whitney for sunrise Q: What did you do for water? A: I also carried a water filter attached to a one litre reservoir and two other hard plastic singleuse water bottles that each lasted me for about three months. Water sources in the desert and parts of Oregon could be up to 30 miles (48km) apart, which sometimes meant you had to carry up to five litres of water (requiring another two litre bladder). Usually we just collected water from streams, lakes or cattle troughs but these were often few and far between in the first 700 miles (1,100km) of desert, even starting in early spring. Q: What are your plans now while travel is restricted? I have just launched a new Facebook group, Wildly Inspiring Community. The content has been amazing and people are participating from all around the world, sharing their naturebased photos, stories and adventures. I am also planning to launch a podcast (also called Wildly Inspiring) where I will be interviewing amateur and professional adventurers, people who travel to inspiring places or who have other outdoorbased inspiring stories to tell. www.facebook.com/groups/wildlyinspiring/

Maleny the book town Celebration of Books
Although the 2020 Celebration of Books Maleny (COBM) had to be cancelled, GC&M News was still keen to chat with organiser Claire Booth about what draws people to Maleny - the book town. Claire has always had a passion for books and the way they provide “a safe way to travel and understand different places, times and worlds”, as well as providing knowledge, an escape and keeping your mind active. She always felt Maleny was a town with a keen interest in books, writing and reading, so Claire decided to use her previous experience of managing Queensland’s major literary awards program to gather with a group of like-minded Maleny friends - artists, writers and businesswomen - to discuss starting a festival. “The group called a public
forum and then had a series of public meetings to nut out how we would operate, and without hesitation the first Celebration of Books Maleny was born in October 2012,” Claire said. Through COBM, Claire particularly loved hearing from others about the books they were reading and has relished meeting authors and learning more about book art. She said she particularly loved working with a group of passionate, positive people with a common interest. “I really enjoy the buzz in the room when there are hundreds of interested people who come together to meet an author and talk about books. There is nothing like it,” Claire said. She believes a number of factors had contributed to the success of the festival including its timing in July, when the cooler Maleny weather was a draw card and

As a bookshop owner, she felt Maleny and its surrounding areas had strong supporters of quality bookstores with a community of active and engaged readers, who were willing to purchase a diverse selection of titles. Jan said she had always been passionate about books and grew up in a large family of avid readers. The literary lovers CBD and Montville, and is now owned by her daughter, Sarah. Jan said that one of the things she loved most about being Jan Cornfoot from a bookseller Ros etta Books was the interaction with book lovers - talking about their favourite reads, helping select books and sharing their enthusiasm for reading. “Here at Rosetta Books, we are fortunate to have wide support from both locals and visitors alike,” she said. “We find that in addition to the Maleny and surrounding community, people travel long distances to buy books here as they appreciate the range of books and the ambience.” Jan feels that books are important as they allow readers to be “transported elsewhere” and also provide the opportunity to learn and to share others’ experiences.
Steven and Tyyni Lang have been actively involved in a myriad of book-related pursuits in Maleny for more than 20 years and that has undoubtedly contributed to the perception of Maleny as the book town. The powerhouse couple along with their colleagues have enjoyed an integral interest and association with Maleny bookstores, books and literary events. Steven directed the first Maleny Festival of Books and Writing in 1998 and went on to run the events program at Rosetta Books from 2001-2007. He co-founded the bookshop with Tyyni. With a shared vision to own a bookstore, Steven and Tyyni originally scouted the area in 2000, looking at location options in Maleny. The name Rosetta Books referenced the ancient Rosetta
Stone, which provided a key to hidden knowledge. It proved to be a cleverly apt Fi and Tyyni name for a bookstore. Steven said they initially decided to establish a bookstore that would appeal to intelligent and engaged readers but there was no assurance that the venture would be a success. “In the end it turned out marvellously and we were able to provide a curated space that was an unashamedly literary bookstore,” Steven said. The couple ran Rosetta Books from 2001-2007. After a threeyear hiatus, Tyyni returned to bookshop ownership in 2010 when she became co-owner of Maleny Bookshop with her business partner, Fi Hunter.
Steven said that owning bookshops was a labour of love. However, a key point he considers essential is to always strive to create an inviting, quality driven curated space. After ten years at the helm of Maleny Bookshop, which specialises in an eclectic and interesting range of items including second-hand antiquarian books and out of print publications, Tyyni and Fi have recently announced Maleny Bookshop will change hands. The new owners, Ian and Harper Bayly, are scheduled to welcome in their new venture on July 8.

Meet the Producer Producers name: Daniel Jackson Farm name: Jackson Agricultural Company Farm location: Glasshouse Mountains Years of operation: Four Do you know what a custard apple tastes like? Funnily enough, Daniel Jackson didn’t when he bought his farm at Glass House Mountains four years ago. Now Daniel and his wife Angela, along with their two kids, run the successful Jackson Agricultural Company. The Jacksons had been thinking about making a move into farming, specifically macadamia farming, for a number of years. It was at the base of Mount Coonowrin that they found the
perfect established property with a number of macadamia and custard apple trees. Daniel said that originally they had planned to focus on macadamias and phase out the custard apples. He laughs that he’d never even seen a custard apple before purchasing the farm. Now he is the president of the Custard Apple Australia association. What makes Daniel’s story so fascinating is the incredible growth the business has experienced in custard apples since taking over the farm. We caught up with Daniel to have a chat about life as a custard apple (and macadamia nut) farmer. When did you start farming? We purchased our farm four years ago. I’d always been interested in farming and we had been looking at buying a farm for a number of years. It can be quite difficult for people to get into farming but it is something that we always wanted to do. It’s been a steep learning

With Jennifer Kent curve but we’ve adopted a scientific approach and been able to make the most of it while continuing to expand, which is great. What do you love about farming? There’s a lot to love but mostly it’s the freedom to do what I want – to be my own boss. Custard apples in particular are very labour intensive as it is all done by hand – planting, pruning, picking, packing; but being able to see the direct result of the effort put in is incredibly rewarding. In a way, we’re in control of our own destiny. Tell us about custard apples. What do they taste like? The flavour is difficult to explain as there’s not really anything like it. They have a tropical flavour and a smooth, creamy texture. A lot of people say to me they remember them having a lot of seeds but over the years they’ve progressed to producing fewer seeds. They’re beautiful picked straight off the tree, cracked open and enjoyed straight away. How many trees do you have? At the moment we have about 5,000 macadamia trees and 1,500 custard apple trees but we’re planning to plant a further 750 custard apples in the coming months. Within the next 12-18 months we expect to have around 6,500 macadamia trees and 3,000 custard apple trees. Where can we get our hands on your products? The Glass House region is the largest in Australia for custard apple producers but our main market is actually south in Melbourne and Sydney. It’s very popular within the Asian food
market. Custard apples aren’t something you often find in the big supermarkets but you can purchase local farmers’ produce at local fruit stores or markets. We also have a roadside stall outside our farm for anyone in the area. What are your tips for growing custard apples in the backyard? They’re commonly known as a backyard fruit, so plant in a sunny, well-drained spot and prune hard from an early age. They enjoy humidity when in flower, so be sure to give them a good drink to keep their roots moist. On our farm, it takes three years from first planting to first crop and peak crop is when the trees are 7–10 years old but they some trees can still fruit at 30 plus years. What’s next for Jackson Agricultural Company? We have a number of elite plants that we’re currently trialling, including the red variety, and we’re hoping to continue to develop this and eventually expand into commercialising these. We’ve seen a push recently for health and immunity building and custard apples are in a class of super foods, so we’re hoping their popularity continues to grow.
Custard apples are their own little super food loaded with vitamins, protein, fibre, minerals and energy, and have very little fat. They’re also a good food source of copper.

Chef and farmer combine to innovate Matt Golinski is a household name and he is a highly regarded professional chef. We were lucky to chat to him as, like us, he is an avid supporter of local farmers and producers. Matt has been working with Jade King from Green Valley Fingerlimes, which we featured in our May 27 edition in the ‘Meet the producer’ series (if you missed it, go to our website www.gcnews.com.au, click on Read, then past editions and find page 16 in the May 27 issue). Matt says that one thing he loves is being able to create relationships with producers, and the mutual respect between chef and producer. “As a chef, there’s an enjoyment and satisfaction in knowing where the produce you are cooking with and dishing up is coming from, and equally for producers, knowing that people are eating and being delighted by it.” Matt and Jade have known each other for a number of years, having met through a local market agent and hitting it off immediately. Matt said that for him professionally, having the opportunity to meet with producers and getting to know them is one of the many perks of his job. Like many farmers – across the world – Jade has been working hard at adapting to the effect coronavirus has had on the industry. She has been working closely with Matt, experimenting with ways to make the most out of her already unique product. Recently Matt recently visited Jade at her Beerwah farm. He says when out visiting his suppliers it often feels just like visiting a mate but he feels very blessed to be able to look at new ways of adding value to their produce. Aside from how interesting the fruit is in itself, Matt says having Jade’s finger limes available year-round is very special, especially considering fresh finger limes are usually only available a few times a year. Jade has been able to manipulate her growing conditions to supply fresh fruit all year round for restaurants and chefs like Matt. However, with the restaurant industry taking a huge hit as a result of the recent pandemic and in turn directly impacting suppliers, producers have needed to adapt and innovate to make the most of their product. produce. Jade has recently invested in additional equipment to help expand her business. The equipment was funded by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries as part of a diversification and resilience grant, and includes a freezer capable of snap-freezing and Bluetooth data logging. “Finger limes are very much a commercial product, supplying to markets for restaurants to purchase in bulk, and while it’s great that they’re available to purchase in the supermarket, the everyday consumer is not likely to buy 3kg,” Matt said. “We have been experimenting with squeezing pulp and offering freeflowing pulp as a frozen product. “There’s a lot of trial and error, but by freezing the pulp separately we’re able to retain the integrity of the pulp for people to keep and enjoy. I believe it has great potential as an export product.” While the science behind it is complex, Matt said that when whole frozen finger limes were defrosted for consumption, they could lose some of their structural integrity. While the flavour was still just as distinct, sometimes the ‘pop’ might not be as sharp as usual. The process that Jade and Matt are working on will allow the product to be enjoyed as if it were spilling from its skin fresh off a tree. “We’re just scratching the surface of producers looking at ways to expand in the market and, in particular it’s the smaller producers, who simply can’t compete with large scale farming operations, who are looking for alternative ways to make the most of their produce,” Matt said. “The innovation that we’re seeing is truly amazing and it’s great seeing the range of products coming from many producers around the region.”

Dunlop’s plane
Imagine their delight when the Friends of Pattemore House discovered a wooden plane that once belonged to Maleny pioneer, Francis Dunlop Jr. It was found in a box of tools kindly donated by Ron Hankinson, a Dunlop descendant who married Judy, a Pattemore descendant. Engraved with his name, Francis’ jointer plane is now proudly on display at Pattemore House demonstrating how such a simple yet vital tool was integral to building Maleny’s earliest homes. The Pattemore brothers Bill, Ernest, Albert and Stan, who built ‘Fairview’ (Pattemore House) for their parents in 1907 from white beech, used a very similar tool daily while working at their saw pit. A jointer plane was used to make a relatively smooth, uniform surface over the boards, producing one long, flat plane and one square edge. Born in 1858, Francis Dunlop - timber getter, selector, farmer and butcher - was the eldest son of Francis Dunlop Sr and Jane Dunlop. Jane was an
early Maleny-Bald Knob district pioneer, having moved to the area in August 1875 with her children, Jane (later Mrs Traill), William, Francis and Robert Dunlop. Jane is buried alongside her great friend Margaret Hankinson and their graves are still visible outside the Maleny primary school. Francis Dunlop selected 160 acres (Portion no. 1264) in Maleny on March 9, 1880. His selection included the land where the Maleny Hotel and primary school are now located. On October 29, 1894 he started the Obi Obi Sawmilling Co on the site of the present day Energex sub station, with his brother-inlaw George Traill, J Collins and William H Lillingstone, which ran until 1930.

It is said that the cedar stump was large enough for a horse and buggy to turn around on and that on arrival in England, when it was found that there were no saws big enough to cut the log, it was

blown up with explosives and the timber used to make altars and furniture in a well-known London cathedral! Francis also built a slaughtering yard near his home facing the Obi Obi Creek (today this site is the bottom oval of the primary school) and established Maleny’s first butcher shop in 1898. These slaughter yards were still being used by Maleny butchers Bob MacKeny and Bert Saul in the 1950s. Meat was transported by horse and cart up to the butcher shop at 11 Maple Street from Dunlop’s slaughter yards. Francis was also the first treasurer of the Masonic Lodge in Maleny, which was originally named Dunlop Lodge in his honour in 1913. Francis never married, living all his life in Maleny with his mother Jane, and was fondly thought of by the locals who called him Uncle. He died in 1941 aged 83 years, his body was cremated and his ashes spread on his mother’s grave.

Farwell to a little Beerwah icon It is with great sadness that the little one-eyed Maltese terrier from Little Muttz Cutz, best known as Wags or Wayygs, passed away from liver and kidney failure on June 25. This brave little dog had a terrible life, being mistreated as a pup, until Gail the owner/manager from Little Mutz Cutz Dog Grooming Salon rescued him about four years ago. He was then savaged by a much larger dog in a brutal dog attack.

He was just minding his own business and he ended up on the critical list. However, with his big heart determination he survived to enjoy life with his new owner, who gave him love, protection and affection. Wags would greet customers and their dogs on entering Gail’s salon, letting them know everything will be fine and not to be scared in his own little barking way. Anyone who came into Little Mutz Cutz would be greeted by Wags

with a gentle bark and a good licking on their legs. Wags was a very gentle little fellow and wouldn’t hurt a fly. He loved his owner Gail so much that he would follow her everywhere she went to make sure she was all right. He enjoyed his new life without being mistreated or hurt. He was also very cheeky, disappearing to Neddy’s Nose Bag café to say hello to Lesley’s customers and maybe get a free hot chip. He loved everybody. And I know everyone loved him and cherished the time with him. Gail showed him that there are some good people in this world. He will be sadly missed, never forgotten and always in our hearts and memories. Goodbye little man and rest in peace. Customer Little Mutz Cutz

Henry Dyer reportedly owned the first automobile in the Landsborough district and also the Landsborough Hotel (Mellum Club Hotel). Following the completion of the North Coast railway line in 1890, over the following years the Landsborough central business area gradually shifted closer to the railway line. Over a two-week period in 1914, Henry supervised the hotel being moved about 2km from its original location on Old Gympie Road, on skids pulled with winches by bullock teams, to its present location in Cribb Street to take advantage of the new developing central business area. GC&M News staff are always happy to volunteer to go out for lunch for our our regular write ups. However being school holidays last week we roped in our ad rep Tina Grieve’s daughter Lainey and a group of her mates to take on the task for us. We gave the girls a budget and away they went around Beerwah to pick up their favourite takeaway before meeting back at the Tower Green for a picnic lunch. There was a spread of choices and their food included sushi from Hikaru, subs from Subway, fried rice from the Noodle House, nachos from Hola Mexicano and they finished off with a Subway cookie for everyone. The Mexican cola from Beerwah’s very own Mexican cafe was definitely the drink of choice for nearly all the girls. These days Beerwah has definitely become food central and we are spoilt for choice with our international cuisine, which includes Mexican, Chinese, Thai, Indian, Japanese, Italian, Lebanese, Korean and the Asian Noodle House. With such an amazing variety of food for both dine in and takeaway options, there is sure to be something to please every member of the family!

Beerwah’s newest café - Boho Bean Café in Turner Street - only opened last Wednesday and is already impressing locals with the incredibly well-priced, great home-style menu for breakfast and lunch as well as drink and sweet treats served throughout the day. The owners are mum and son duo Gill and Darren Halls, who have taken the plunge into a business together and are really looking forward to getting to know their customers, so much so that their motto is “come as a guest, leave as a friend”. Many of us like to think our townships are modern country towns but we aren’t so fancy that we don’t enjoy the basic breakfast favourites (served from 7–11am) including toast and vegemite, honey, peanut butter or jam; a piece of tasty raisin or cinnamon toast; or a bacon and egg roll. Boho Bean Café has all these as well as some funkier choices of acai bowl, granola bowl with yogurt, fresh pressed juices and smoothies. At lunch time they also have the regular favourites of sandwiches, open grills, wraps as well as quiche and
soup of the day. Then for a treat they have their mini cob loaf, which we couldn’t go past on our visit, and a range of burgers served with either a side salad or chips (of course we went for the chips). Federal Member for Fisher The ongoing relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, including the opening of Queensland’s borders to most Australians, has been welcome news for local tourism, retail, food and drink businesses and the thousands of Sunshine Coast residents who rely on them for their livelihoods. However, it is likely to be a long time before we see the usual number of tourists in our region. So it is still up to us to pull together as a community and do everything we can to support all of our terrific hinterland businesses ourselves. That’s why I created the grassroots campaign #SupportSunshineCoast. Ever since restrictions began to lift I have been visiting fantastic businesses in the hinterland, like Monica’s Café, Maple3, The Maleny Men and Maleny Cheese. Businesses like these, which are a regular part of any hinterland visit, have struggled badly in recent months, which means fewer jobs available for the people who live here and a weaker economy for all of us. If you want to get involved in #SupportSunshineCoast all you have to do is try a new local activity, have a meal at one of our restaurants or cafés, choose a local shop for the products you need or splash out at one of our fantastic boutiques. Then jump online to tell your friends all about it. Add the hashtag #SupportSunshineCoast to your posts, along with #shoplocal, #staylocal or #playlocal to help remind everyone that the Sunshine Coast is the very best place to live or to visit in Australia.

Queensland Air Museum petition to grow collection The Queensland Air Museum has been based in Caloundra for more than 30 years and holds the largest collection of civil and military aircraft and aviation memorabilia in Australia. However, this collection has outgrown the museum’s current land. It is an important tourist attraction and growing its footprint can only add to its importance. After many years attempting to negotiate the facility’s growth with the Sunshine Coast Council, which is trustee of the land, and the Queensland Government, museum president Cameron Elmes has been met with brick wall after brick wall. The museum’s volunteers have now decided to petition the state government, which I have sponsored and fully support. The museum is of the utmost importance to us, not just as residents of the Sunshine Coast but as Australians. This museum is a window to our country’s history – both in times of war and times of peace. Our aviation legacy is something our children and grandchildren should learn by seeing these incredible aircraft and memorabilia in person. LNP’s tough new approach to child safety Last month, LNP leader Deb Frecklington announced our policy to create a new child protection force if elected in October. The system-wide shakeup would see the child safety department become a stand-alone agency that would conduct “no second chance” mandatory drug tests on parents, have officers on hand 24/7 under new shift arrangements, bring in a new team of police investigators to clear backlogs, recruit more foster carers and increase the use of adoption. We cannot afford another departmental failure that results in children like Mason Jet Lee falling through the cracks and being murdered. I’m proud to be part of a team that will deliver these changes as a priority policy if we form government in October.
Anti hooning Deb and the LNP have also announced an anti-hooning policy that will fund new cameras, create fresh laws and put in place technology that will, quite literally, shred the tyres of hooners. The policy will see 100 covert cameras rolled out across the state providing instant video playback to police stations and officers. Tyre shedding road surfaces will be laid out in at least 40 hooning hotspots across the state. The road surface will quickly erode rubber when a car performs a burnout or skid but no damage will be inflicted on vehicles that are driven safely and correctly. We will also draft new laws that will target hooning gang members by adding a threeyear driving ban on drivers whose cars are impounded, immobilised or confiscated. The ban will increase to five years for repeat law breakers.

COVID-19 community response grants Many not-for-profit organisations have been doing it tough during COVID-19 and I’m proud to share that 97 groups recently received support thanks to council’s COVID-19 community response grants. Much needed grants were awarded to Glasshouse Country Horse and Pony Club, Landsborough Area Community Association, Beerwah Glasshouse United Football Club, Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee, Glass House Country Community Group, Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club and Glasshouse Mountains Touch Football Association. Have your say on new regional sport and recreation project Please consider reviewing the draft master plan for the new 75-hectare Honey Farm Road sport and recreation precinct at Meridan Plains (opposite Corbould Park Racecourse). Now is your chance to share your experience and ideas. The precinct will provide our region with a considerably expanded range of opportunities to enjoy active sports, outdoor recreation, healthy living and community events. Budget endorsed With the $782 million Sunshine Coast Council 2020/21 budget now endorsed, I am pleased to share that Division 5 will benefit from $6.2 million for major projects to enhance our streetscapes, sustain our environment, support our community and boost road safety. Overall Division 5 will also see $554,000 worth of minor works plus about $9.6 million in essential road improvements over the next financial year. Road upgrade highlights include $924,500 for McGilchrist Road Eudlo, $865,000 for widening Diamond Valley Road at Diamond Valley and $385,000 for upgrading Glenview Road at Glenview. There is also $50,000 allocated for the Mooloolah Valley Sports Complex car park upgrade, $300,000 for a feasibility study and planning for future plans to develop a new 24 hectare ecological park at Mary Cairncross in Maleny and $300,000 to rehabilitate the Wells Road causeway in Maleny. COVID-19 support Council has made a submission for funding from the state government’s Works for Queensland grant program and I look forward to sharing the outcomes of this submission with you as soon as I am able. Three local community groups will receive grants from $150,000 in funding recently announced for the seat of Fisher as part of the federal government’s Stronger Communities Programme. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said 19 grants would be made in Fisher to help rebuild the local economy after the COVID crisis and support community groups and small local construction businesses who were doing it tough. “There has never been a more important time to support our local community groups,” Mr Wallace said. “A lot of people on the Sunshine Coast are struggling right now and our local volunteer groups provide a vital lifeline for many. These grants will give many groups the capacity to do more and help get our community through this tough time.” The successful local grants were: • The 5th Light Horse Regiment Maleny Troop $2,600 for installation of improved security for the Beersheba Living Museum. • Montville Village Association - $13,500 for construction of a covered deck and to upgrade disability access at the heritage-listed Montville Village Hall. • The Lions Club of Beerwah - $5,300 to purchase materials and cover installation costs for ceiling insulation at the Lions shed at Beerwah Sportsgrounds. In the Garden Kellyfield Camellias take a break this year About this time every second year, Ron and Elaine Tincknell of Curramore (north of Maleny) open up their garden, Kellyfield Camellias, to let people walk around their acreage block and admire Ron’s life passion - camellias. Not just a few camellias - more
than 200 varieties, some of which Ron developed himself and can only be found in his garden. The open day is a way to raise funds to donate to Give Me 5 for Kids in partnership with the coast’s Mix FM radio station. Normally around 500 people marvel at the amazing variety of colours, forms, sizes and shapes of the camellias Ron has collected over the years. Alas, this year due to the COVID-19 situation, Ron and Elaine can’t open their gates. Ron invited me up to have a look around and take some photos so at least the readers of GC&M News can see how the camellias have gone this year. Well, to be honest, local Malenyites are able to see Ron’s flowers every day during this camellia season as every morning he takes fresh blooms into Monica’s Café on Maple Street in
Maleny, where they are displayed in bowls on the benches for all to admire. It has taken Ron more than 35 years to develop the property so that it is perfect (as possible) for growing camellias. Luckily, Ron worked as a highly respected landscape gardener since the days of Caloundra City Council so his horticultural background gives him a great understanding of how plants and soils work. According to Ron, there’s a camellia for everyone. He said camellias preferred the rich volcanic soils found around Maleny and at Montville, but in reality there were so many varieties suited to so many
different situations, that no matter where you are, you can grow a stunning camellia … you just need the right conditions and the right situation. “Many people don’t know that commercial tea is actually a type of camellia – so people can grow their own tea, just like they do with coffee bushes these days,” Ron said. Ron grows all his camellias in the ground, as his rich soil is perfect for them. However, if you don’t have Ron’s soil, you can just as easily grow many of the smaller varieties in large pots – just be sure to use a special camellia potting mix and fertiliser. Ron suggests that new camellia growers would do well to call in and speak with Darryl at Camellia Glen Nursery on McKays Lane in Palmwoods, which is open

Using his horticultural expertise, Ron has created what is probably the largest collection of groundplanted yellow flowering camellias anywhere. Many are varieties that you are unlikely to see anywhere else in Queensland. Unfortunately for me, none of them were flowering so I’ll have to wait until next year for those. Camellias of every other colour and shade were on show during my visit, which made it easy to take photos. However, Ron said that this year the bulk blooming is later than normal, meaning that many bushes had scatterings of flowers but had not yet been enveloped in colour. He said it could be the weather
conditions leading into this winter that stalled the flowering but, to be honest, to the layperson you wouldn’t really know, as there is colour at every turn. Not only has Ron been busy in his own patch, he’s also taken on the job, as a member of the Maleny Garden Club, of creating a heritage camellia garden as part of the Maleny Settlers Green on the Maleny precinct. As part of the heritage park project, Ron has been able to collect and plant 36 heritage camellias to showcase the flowers what would have been seen in early gardens. “Every farm garden had a camellia and a rose, and you can still find many of them growing around the original farm house yards,” Ron said. Ron searched them out, worked out what camellia varieties they were, then sourced potted plants
from commercial nurseries. He said because these heritage varieties were grown from cuttings, all the plants of a particular variety originated from the same source stock. “So the one’s we’ve planted will have a direct genetic link to the old camellias growing around Maleny today,” Ron said. Although the heritage camellia garden is very new, a recent visit found some of them had already bloomed this year. So, as they develop – looked after by Ron – it promises to be something to behold in years to come. Sport Landsborough Tennis AFL Masters season Contributed by Howard opener Westmoreland A band of ten willing Landsborough Tennis Club members spent all day on June 18 hard at work scrubbing our four excellent hard courts to make them ready to open again for full operation as soon as is permitted. Members are able to use the courts now while abiding by the prescribed guidelines and general hire to the public will be available through Landsborough IGA as soon as current restrictions are relaxed. As a ‘get going again’ special, the club is offering new members a 50% reduction in membership fees until December 31, which allows immediate and unlimited free daytime access to the courts. The reduced cost is $25 for an adult or $50 for all members of one family. Applications for membership can be made on www.tennis.com.au/ landsborough or by contacting the treasurer on 5499 9795.

Glasshouse Masters AFL (over 35s) will kick off the season on Saturday, July 11 at 2pm at the Landsborough Sport Complex on Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough. They will be playing the Bayside Bombers for the first time and coach Paul McCrostie is excited about the opportunity. “We have some new guys this year and with the returning players we expect to put on a good game. With the delay to the season starting the guys are chomping at the bit to get out there,” Paul said. “There will be bar facilities and a barbeque after the game so come on down and watch some of yesterday’s local heroes running around.” The purpose of Masters footy is to provide an opportunity for people to play (start, resume or continue) Australian Rules outside of senior competitions. The motto is footy for fun, fitness and friendship. There are physical and social benefits of playing footy for as long as possible and Masters attracts all sizes, shapes and playing abilities from complete newbies to ex AFL players. Last year the youngest player was 32 and the oldest was 60! The season is a six-game fixture played fortnightly. The emphasis is on participation and enjoyment rather than premierships and flags.
