IT was an unexpected but refreshing response when I called the owner of a car which had been vandalised at the Maleny Show this month. As it happened some people had thought (or likely not thought much at all) to hurl a bollard through the back windscreen of a courtesy car late on the first evening of the show. Not nice stuff, especially when the car was last year part of a community colouring-in competition run by Maleny Accident Repair and the design was that of a now-year-five Maleny State School student. Car owner Juan Perez had every right to vent, but instead has looked at the bigger picture - and asked that if it were kids, (and it’s juvenile to say the least) then what can the wider community do to cut that sort of activity off at the pass. Juan’s position was that while it was disappointing, it was not going to stop

Courtesy car struck

Where the streets had same name By Kirra Livingstone A BEERWAH street has been renamed after months of delivery disruption because it bore the same name as a Glass House Mountains road. Residents of Mountainview Place at Glass House Mountains said they had faced months of delivery mishaps including one resident who had a truckload of gravel dumped at their address. Residents had became so adept at the disruption they were even arranging regular mail swaps at the local pub just to get deliveries sorted. It followed a council decision to name a new Beerwah road the exact same name as a Glass House Mountains road, which was named in 1994 Initially there was a slight difference in the names, with a space between ‘Mountain’ and ‘View’ at Beerwah. However, council inexplicably decided in March this year to also add a space between ‘Mountain’ and ‘View’ at the Glass House location. Glass House resident Vikki Bartel rallied residents to petition for a name change, with her persistence acknowledged by council who in late May decided to change the Beerwah

road to ‘Mountain Breeze Place’. “I was beyond excited,” she said. “I was overjoyed, I was ecstatic, not because they’re going to have their name changed, but because the problem is now solved.” Although the situation had been a headache for residents, she said everyone had worked together to try and make it work while the cogs of local bureaucracy slowly started turning in their favour. The issue began in January 2022 when Vikki started receiving unexpected deliveries of construction goods such as gravel, concrete and pool fencing, just as her own deliveries stopped. She first contacted the council in mid-January and from there began a “wild goose chase” across various departments as she sought a common sense resolution. “It took me about 40 minutes to get to the right department, but I hung on, and I sent off the first email and they came back and said we haven’t had this problem before,” she said. “How the hell are people supposed to complain.” Great lengths had to be taken by residents of both streets to ensure they

could get their mail, and thanks to both streets being so honest, there were never any issues of stolen or missing mail. “We’ve got a businessman who collects their mail from the Beerwah pub because his opposite resident works at the pub,” she said. “And then there’d be a phone call and they’d do their exchange.” “It’s never been their (delivery drivers) fault, it’s never been the Beerwah residents’ fault, the fault lands, or did land, squarely on the council,” she said.

THE owner of a courtesy car damaged at the Maleny Show after vandals hurled a bollard through the rear windscreen says the attack will motivate him to initiate more activities for kids in the evenings. The car was last year part of a community colouring-in competition and was featured on the front page of GC&M News. Car owner, Juan Perez from Maleny Accident Repair Centre, said it was probably bored kids misbehaving. “I’m disappointed but in the same breath I’m not devastated by it. We’ll move on,” he said. “It’s not going to deter us from getting out there and helping the community.” He said the damage, along with other examples of graffiti and vandalism in that area had prompted him to think about initiatives to help kids find meaningful activities. “It’s an opportunity to see if there’s something we can do, build something for them to do at night,” he said.

Support grows for Maleny Live By Sonia Isaacs Clark MUSIC industry heavyweights are backing live music at Maleny Lane as organisers say they are continuing to explore options to ensure performances at the popular outdoor venue continues. Maleny Lane creative organiser Steve McLeish said that a licence application was on track, and that his team had been undertaking “positive conversations” with the Sunshine Coast Council to find a viable solution. The situation came to a head in April when the council told Maleny Lane that it could not continue to allow live music until it had an appropriate licence. Mr McLeish credited the assistance of Maleny local and entertainment industry stalwart Ian (Dicko) Dickson and the recently created Music Industry peak body group, ‘Sunshine Coast Music Industry Collective’ (SCMIC) in helping the outdoor music venue navigate the issues while also providing valuable advocacy and insight. “Dicko and SCMIC were a fantastic support to us. They have a very experienced crew of people working together to provide a real force for the arts here on the coast,” Mr McLeish said. Ian Dickson, well known throughout the music industry by his preferred nickname, Dicko, said Maleny Lane was

an important cultural mix for the town and allowed a creative space for various groups of Maleny to mix together. It also provided a much-needed boost for the local night-time economy. “Our brief with SCMIC is to protect and support the music in print here on the Sunshine Coast, so when we heard that live music could be under threat at Maleny Lane, we were keen to assist,” Dicko told GC&M News. “Maleny Lane is an incredible incubator for creative talent and music and a beacon for after dark entertainment in the town. SCMIC were happy to advocate for the venue, we reached out to Council and found they were very supportive.”

Ian (Dicko) Dickson was keen to support Maleny Lane SCMIC’s goal is to build a collaborative, sustainable, and cohesive music economy on the Sunshine Coast, with the peak body championing and advocating for musicians, music businesses and the music industry. On Saturday June 4, an education session was held to prepare the community for natural disasters. The event was organised by the Glasshouse Country Disaster Management Network (GCDMN) and hosted at Church on the Rise in Beerwah. Guest speakers from HQ Plantations, Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the Rural Fire Brigade presented on various topics to help people prepare for fires, floods and other extreme weather events. The day was complete with a coffee van, Rotary sausage sizzle and prize giveaways, including one lucky person who won a generator. The overall message was “everyone has a part to play” to create a strong resilient region that is able to respond, recover and adapt to disaster events. Mobile library ends

THE mobile library service for Glass House Mountains has been scrapped due to a lack of demand. The Sunshine Coast Council has amended its mobile library timetable to better reflect demand and patterns of use. Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said the new timetable would provide a service that met community demand for Library services.

Land sale cleared

Grant for Glassie shade sail

By Mitch Gaynor A PARCEL of land in the Maleny Community Precinct has been sold by the Sunshine Coast Council to a developer who plans to build retirement living housing. A council meeting earlier this month passed a motion to sell an 8,223sqm parcel of land to the owner of an adjacent block, Ross Kenneally, for $850,000. The move was opposed by some Maleny locals who were concerned the sale should have gone to tender and the sale price undervalued the land. But an independent valuation found the land was worth $780,000, and the council insisted the developer pay above that amount. At its ordinary meeting on May 26, councillors heard that it was not practical to auction the parcel as it was landlocked and could not be developed by anyone other than the adjacent property owner. It was also proposed, and agreed, for council to purchase a smaller parcel of land off the developer to provide further infrastructure including sewerage services. The move had infuriated residents including Marek and Libby Malter who had written to Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson and councillors expressing their “dismay and disgust” at the proposed sale.

“Public land should be sacrosanct and under no circumstances be traded off for development particularly without proper community consultation and public transparency,” they wrote. Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston said the sale price was above valuation and that there were no alternatives to the sale. “The only viable way of development of the land is to sell it to the adjoining property owner,” said Cr Johnston adding he would push to use the sale proceeds for infrastructure services. Cr Johnston said the purchase of Lot 2 – for $130,000 – was agreed to allow council options for future infrastructure development. “In the future if we’re going to put in an amenities block for people that walk the pathway and use the facilities, they have got to have water and sewerage access,” Cr Johnston said.

Developer Cloudwalk Estate issued a statement saying: “Discussion occurred over a number of years leading to Council and Cloudwalk agreeing to appoint independent valuers who in January 2022 agreed the market value of the land based on likely development costs, land sales and comparable development sites.The valuation considers the high costs associated with providing the land with connections to infrastructure (roads and services), which impacts the overall value.” The statement said Cloudwalk agreed to pay a premium above market value and intends to lodge a development application for retirement focused living following completion of the transaction. “There is currently a strong need in Maleny for retirement living housing which is our intention to pursue,” it read.

THE GLASSHOUSE Country Bowls Club is excited to have received a grant to repair their shade sails, in time for a local bowls competition. Glasshouse Bowls Club secretary Mick Borchers said they submitted their grant application to Sunshine Coast Council in March this year and was surprised by the speed of the approval. “I thought the process might take longer… I figured they might have had heaps of applications, I was probably expecting four to six months, so I was quite surprised,” he said. Mr Borchers said he was glad for the grant and spoke about the importance of supporting community sport clubs as their funds can be on the lower end depending on the club. “It’s really essential and we are so grateful as a club because its actually quite sad that when you look at our income base, i.e. the nature that we can generate our own funds, it’s very limited,” he said. “To get that money that the council has granted us, it’s probably a good two years of saving to match what they have done.” The Pennant competition will commence the first weekend of August and will conclude on September 24.

Business expenses top concern

By Mitch Gaynor BUSINESS owners across Glasshouse Country say ongoing business expenses are the most immediate concern to their future, according to a new survey. Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce this month released the findings of its shopfront survey, which looked at the major influences businesses anticipated in the next 12 months. The survey received 50 submissions, with ‘ongoing business expenses’ the most pressing issues for owners, with 46 per cent saying it was their biggest worry. Chamber vice president Brett Piercy said the survey showed that over 67 per cent of respondents saw business expenses as a major or moderate concern.

“It shows that the absolute majority of survey participants are grappling with the costs of doing business,” Brett said. “It seems clear that businesses will be looking at ways to cover fixed costs, including staffing costs to stay on top of expenses.” Brett said the Chamber would use the findings to seek support from council and government. The next major influences for Glasshouse businesses were staff recruitment and retention as well as issues specific to individual operators (equally 36 per cent). The impact of street parking - an issue following a move by Beerwah Marketplace to impose three-hour time limits on parking - was a concern for over 70 per cent of respondents.

The move has pushed workers who used to park in the Marketplace outside the precinct, which has consequently reduced parking options for customers of retailers especially on Simpson and Turner streets. The council has told GC&M News that it is now considering timed street parking limits. “It is clearly an issue that has attracted discussion for businesses particularly in Beerwah,” Brett said. “In order to reach a fair outcome for all stakeholders, we need to consider parking as a priority in any future planning discussions.” Another question in the survey asked retailers their thoughts on the proposed Coles development. There was a split in opinions, with 36 per cent saying it was a major or large threat, 36 per cent neutral and 28 per cent saying it would be a minor or significant boost to their business. “The results showed a split in opinions on the development and the Chamber will need to look more closely at how it might support those businesses that see the development as a threat,” Brett said. glasshousecountrychamber.com.au

A MAN who crashed his car on Steve Irwin Way at Landsborough on June 1 then stole the vehicle of another man who had stopped to help. Beerwah police said they were continuing to investigate the incident saying initial investigations indicated a white Jaguar reported stolen from Worongary lost control on Steve Irwin Way just after 9am, before colliding with a tree. Several members of the public, including a man in his 60s, stopped to assist the male driver from the vehicle, police said. The driver then proceeded to get into the man’s maroon Mazda CX-5 and take off northbound on Steve Irwin Way. The driver is described as male and aged between 18 and 30. Police investigations into the incident remained ongoing. Anyone with information, relevant CCTV or dashcam footage in the area at the time depicting the incident or a white Jaguar and maroon Mazda CX-5 was urged to contact police.

Peachester grows its garden

Missing tennis honour board

By Jennifer Kent FORMER Maleny Tennis Club players and their families feel aggrieved to have learned the club’s honour boards have been removed from the club, however the club said the decision not to replace them was due to their deteriorating condition. Current club president Neil Stenhouse explained that both of the club’s honour boards were removed last year to allow the club to be repainted as part of ongoing maintenance. Upon removal, one of the boards was showing significant signs of wear and when the time came to retrieve it from storage, the damage was beyond repair. “Unfortunately, the board which dates back to the 1940s had significant damage and was not able to be restored,” he said. The remaining honour board is currently at local historian and writer Jack Wilcox AM’s home, Neil explained. Jack has a strong association with the history of the club and in 2018 released his fourth book ‘Maleny Memories: Thru the Lens of Tennis’. Former club member, 81-year-old Daphne Hawkins, said she was disappointed that memorabilia had been dumped and not relocated. “The honour board had a number of names on it who played a big part in establishing the Tennis Club in the first place,” she said. Daphne’s daughter Janelle shared that many felt the decision to discard the board was insensitive, as the names form a part of the history of the Maleny. “Yes they were old,” she said, “but they had history”. Neil advised GC&M News that the Maleny Tennis Club management committee will review the issue at their next meeting later this month.

PEACHESTER State School has become one of only 25 schools nationwide to receive a grant from the inaugural CRT Primary Schools Program. The grant will allow the school to continue to develop its kitchen garden program, which has been a hit with students who learn to not only grow food but then prepare and eat healthy meals using their own produce. Excited students and parents were on hand to receive the $2,000 grant, which over 300 schools had applied for. School volunteer and mother, Karen Schmidt, prepared the submission, saying it had been a difficult year for fundraising and the funds would not only alleviate that pressure, but help fast-track new initiatives incuding market stalls. “This really helps take the heat off the P&C for the year,” Karen said.

CRT’s Kathryn Whalley said: “This program is focused on recognising the important role P&C associations play in supporting the growth and development of the next generation.” “CRT is proud to provide a helping hand to support Peachester State School.” Peachester SS Principal Kim Fillery said the program provided students with “a rich experience with essential life skills”. “It links us with our community, with many volunteers coming and helping the students, but also sharing the beautiful garden produce among our school community,” Kim said.

Exciting new ‘Women’s Work’ exhibition to launch

AFTER nearly 12 months of preparation, members of the Peachester History Committee are getting ready to present an exciting new exhibition that pays tribute to the vital contribution of women in supporting home and community life over the last 100 years. Launching on Saturday June 18, ‘A Woman’s Work’ will honour the considerable effort and capabilities of women in local communities as they maintained families, farms, and communities. Filled with intriguing objects and household items from bygone eras on loan from local families,

photographs and historic newspaper clippings and articles, the exhibition will also feature a section celebrating the State centenary of the Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA). President of the Peachester History Committee Helen Page said the initial idea for the exhibition flowed on from an observation that most of the set exhibits at the Peachester Heritage Centre were ‘very masculine’. “When we first set up the Heritage Centre, we realised that most of our exhibits related to men. We then put

together a wedding collection, and now with a change of exhibit we wanted to continue the women’s focus, as well as acknowledge the important contribution and fellowship that the QCWA offered,” said Helen. The exhibition will have three main sections: home life featuring historical kitchen and laundry objects; crafts featuring knitted, embroidered and crocheted items; and the history of the QCWA with particular focus on the Peachester branch which opened in 1945. Helen said the QCWA section featured lovely old photos, cookbooks and article cuttings and she hoped that the entire exhibition would prompt people to relive their own memories. “We hope the exhibition will generate some great conversations and an appreciation of the incredible effort women undertook in their commitment to community and family - often in challenging rural conditions.” Community members are welcome to attend the Peachester History Committee and Peachester QCWA joint celebration event on Saturday June 16 from 1.30pm at the Peachester Community Hall and Heritage Centre. Respectful conversations and kite making By Jennifer Kent

IT may seem like an unusual pairing, but it was the perfect way to engage young minds to think about the way in which they speak to themselves and others in all aspects of life. The pilot program was delivered by Speak Up Now – Stop Domestic & Family Violence – Maleny & Blackall Range to years 5/6 students at Maleny’s The River School last Friday, June 3. SUP’s Val France said that they hope the message can continue to fly through the school to younger year levels and families. Facilitator Sherryl Gregory, from Maleny Rotary Club, was enthusiastic about the program. “Our message is simple, if we don’t start with children, we won’t get to where we want to be in terms of respect as adults,” Sherryl explained. “None of us are experts in respectful conversations, or kite flying for that matter, but we all recognise the importance of engaging with people throughout all areas of the community.” Sherryl explained as an ex-senior school teacher, she would often use the example of carrying a

backpack of personal attributes and principles where ever we go. “It doesn’t matter what we do, respect should always be in our backpack.” As Sherryl said the kites provide the conduit for respect. Students were given the opportunity to make and decorate their kites with words and symbols of what they felt respect looks, feels and sounds like; the kites will become a symbol for students to continue the conversation with fellow students, friends and family members. It is hoped the grassroots collaboration which extends on the ‘we can all help stop it at the start’ campaign, will be embraced by other schools.

Maleny Arts Council inspiring winter season MALENY Arts Council’s 2022 Winter Season showcases chamber music, theatre and jazz in three outstanding performances from June to August. “MAC aims to inspire and entertain. Bringing people together for quality performances and to socialize in a relaxed atmosphere is an important part of what we do. We present shows which are relevant and uplifting,” MAC President, Peter Lavery said. The first performance is ‘The Night Parrot’ at 7pm on June 17, and is presented in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Chamber Music Festival in collaboration with Queensland Music Festival. This show takes you on a magical journey as a century-long mystery comes to life in an intimate night of chamber music complemented by visually stunning video images. THE May meeting of the Peachester Garden Club was a lively one and was held in the Peachester Hall, as the garden we planned to visit was too wet underfoot. Congratulations were extended to John and Pam Innes, celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary. Birthday greetings extended to Suella Lanceley, celebrating her 70th birthday and to Ann Parker, celebrating her 80th birthday. Considering all the rain we’ve had, the competition bench was suprisingly well represented. Results of the competition bench for March were a tie for 1st to Suella and Trish on 15pts; 2nd to Pan on 14pts; and 3rd to Judy Banks on 6pts. The was no competition bench for April. Something of interest - Suella explained about culinary uses for her curry tree and lemon verbena.

Sam Tucker from Mooloolah spoke about his project ‘Cans for Cars’ which raises

money to provide motor vehicles for disadvantaged people in the community. Attendees networked with each other while enjoying a specially prepared afternoon tea supplied by the church catering team. The event was an excellent opportunity for the church to acknowledge and show its appreciation to the volunteers in the community.

New garden bins start arriving this month Council’s expanded garden organics service starts Monday 11 July. Bins will be delivered to eligible properties in the coming weeks. Garden organics bins are collected on the same day as your general waste bin and on the alternate week to your recycling bin. One of the most anticipated events on the Sunshine Coast calendar is back in 2022 and presenting live and in-person for the first time since 2019. IT was one of the soggiest May days on record, however Glasshouse Christian College’s annual Open Day went ahead on May 21 despite the unrelenting rain. A few small changes had to be made but the only real casualty was cancelling the rock-climbing wall. Lunch on the lawn with all the food trucks was moved to lunch in the church hall. The jumping castle shifted undercover and plenty of shelter was erected over the animal nursery. The train rides around campus were just as popular and there were so many people wanting campus tours that it was difficult to keep up with demand. “We will never worry about rain on Open Day again,” said principal Mike Curtis. “It all went swimmingly”, he added, a little tongue-in-cheek. Saturday was so wet that all outdoor sports was cancelled which meant GCC had more first-time visitors wanting to look around and lots of unexpected drop-ins.

There was some concern about the Agricultural Science Farm tours as the road out to the farm is vulnerable to rain, however the buses managed to get through and the tractor was on standby just in case. The Glasshouse Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) was completed late 2021 so this was the first time visitors could experience the magnificent multipurpose facility in full use. Music, Dance and Drama performances were enjoyed in the theatre while Hospitality students served tea, coffee and cakes in the foyer. It might have been a soggy Saturday for Open Day but it was certainly a success.

OUR MU06 court was prepared and the spelling word generator was rewound for the running of the 7th annual BSHS Spelling Bee Tennis Tournament. Over 150 smiling faces fronted up to the courts with bubbling enthusiasm and hopes of glory for their house. Beerwah High serves up a spelling bee that’s like no other. The tennis rally format and tactical gameplay of our spelling bee spices up the competition and levels the playing field. Teams battle out points in mock tennis matches, spelling words to stay alive in each rally, taking care to choose the perfect moment to use their teamplay, reserve, count-me-in and powershot tactical cards to gain ascendancy. JOHN MCGRATH - WHY SOME PROPERTIES DON’T SELL AND WHAT TO DO!

This week I’m going to discuss the three reasons why homes don’t sell – and none of them have anything to do with market conditions. These reasons ring true in hot or cooling markets. The three reasons are price, presentation and marketing. If the price is wrong, you can have a booming market and superb presentation, but the property can sit unsold for 12 months. If it’s poorly presented but well-priced, it will still sell, but there’s definitely a positive emotional impact in having a well-presented home that looks and feels right. And marketing? Well, if you don’t get the right buyer to the doorstep of your property then you’re not going to sell it. If your home is well-presented and well-priced but you haven’t stimulated enough buyer interest, again, it’s going to sit around.

So, you should put your efforts into pricing the home well, creating an excellent presentation and ensuring you have a good marketing program. If your property isn’t selling, you need to take stock of what’s gone wrong. Sit down with your agent and have a look at the variables. Was the presentation up to scratch? Did you achieve sufficient coverage with your marketing? Was your asking price realistic? From my experience, price is the culprit in 80% of failed sales. By the time most vendors get their property on the market, it’s presented as well as it’s ever going to be. And they usually have an adequate marketing program, especially if it was an auction sale. You’ll need to ask yourself whether the asking price was too optimistic. What were the offers that came in? Often a vendor will be a bit scathing when an offer comes in. Perhaps they’re expecting $600,000 and someone offers $540,000. They’re disappointed and perhaps a little anxious. But if no one else has made an offer they might want to start considering whether $540,000 is really what the home is worth.

You should also look at your agent’s performance. Has your agent done everything possible? Did they fulfil all their promises? Do you feel they represented your property with enthusiasm, energy and integrity? Don’t be too hasty to blame the agent though. They’re paid by commission, so every single day they’re focused on getting a result that works for you. But if you’ve lost faith in your agent or they didn’t deliver on their promises, it’s probably time to move on. Once you and the agent have debriefed, you can consider the options for going forward. But before you commit to doing anything, it’s a good idea to pause for a breather because you’re probably a bit flat and have lost momentum. You need to recover your positive energy, or your lack of enthusiasm can negatively impact the sale. Taking the home off the market for a few weeks is sometimes quite effective. If your pricing has been out of whack, you can continue the sale via private treaty with your new asking price, or you can go to auction. Vendors who have already had their home passed

in at auction may be reluctant to go through the experience again. But back when I was an agent, I had huge success re-auctioning properties. When the price, presentation and marketing are right, offers will start to come in but they won’t last forever. By the time a buyer puts in an offer for a home, they’re really excited about owning it. But in the face of rejection or procrastination by the vendor, their enthusiasm can quickly fade. They’ll often start talking themselves out of it. So, it’s a good idea to respond to any offers promptly. When it comes to weighing up offers, a good agent will come into their own – they’ll guide you. When I was an agent, I would often receive what my vendors thought was an acceptable offer, but sometimes I’d recommend not accepting. If I believed the buyer would go higher, or there was serious interest from other parties, I’d recommend the vendor wait a bit longer. If you’ve chosen the right agent, they won’t let you undersell your home. They’ll make sure you hang in there until you get the best price.

YOU Precinct land swap

Council recently swapped a large, beautiful, level site it owns a short walk from town for a small, plain site owned by a developer for an amount of money sufficient to meet or subsidise the cost of providing access and services via the small plain site to the large beautiful one, as well to other lots on the Precinct owned by the same developer. If that sounds convoluted, it is. The only obstacle to this fascinating deal is whether the Development Application is approved or not (a housing estate for that mysterious demographic, the over 55s, is said to be on the agenda) and what the final configuration of the boundaries might be, bearing in mind that the large beautiful, site borders the popular Maleny Trail on one side and, ominously, the vacant Community Facilities Sub-Precinct (CFSP) on the other. Let’s recall that the Precinct in its entirety has absolutely nowhere for children and families to play and picnic and have fun in the outdoors with trees for shade and stuff to climb on, not to mention run their dogs. The only site left with this potential a comfy walk from town is, yes, the CFSP, not counting an area a bit further on lease to the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club which uses or plans to use it for all sorts of purposes including playing bridge and grazing horses and swimming laps but never a park, curiously. If the large beautiful site at the heart of the convoluted swap deal were to be incorporated into the Community Facilities Sub-Precinct, what a park that would be. Meantime the CFSP is still a very nice, park-perfect site. Let us hope that our community conscious councillor, Winston Johnston, will vigorously champion that outcome. Drop GST off housing

There has been a lot of discussion lately about the high cost of housing. No one disputes the fact that housing costs have gone through the roof in the last couple of years, and how any young couple can hope to get a home of their own in the foreseeable future. One aspect of housing costs that I have heard no one mention is that new homes are subject to GST on the total cost. When I retired and we sold our previous home to move up here and build our retirement home, we had a fairly strict budget and had to make a few compromises to afford the cost of our new home without any debt. When the final cost was worked out $30,000 went to the government in GST. If the government were serious about making housing more affordable removing this iniquitous tax from the cost of a new home would be a good place to start. I would also point out that prior to the introduction of the GST, no such imposition existed on the cost of building a house. It is also worth noting that the GST is imposed on all other taxes that are part of the cost structure. I personally have always regarded the GST as an iniquity. Name and address supplied

ELECTED Happy 100th to the Queensland Country Women’s Association THERE aren’t too many community organisations that can claim to have served our state and nation for a century. Well, this year marks 100 years of the Queensland Country Women’s Association. 100 years of education, cooking and craft competitions, workshops, networking events, international study, fundraising and advocacy – but more importantly, 100 years of hope, support and underpinning desire to improve the lives of others. As part of the centenary celebrations, I was recently privileged to join members of the Peachester Branch of the QCWA as we celebrated our nation and the humble pineapple! And, last month in Parliament, I joined Maleny QCWA member Patsy Lee (who also represents the Nambour North Coast Division) and other members of the QCWA State Council in a special celebration of their significant milestone. Federal election results

While the overall outcome of the Federal election was disappointing, I really commend our Queensland LNP team – especially Andrew Wallace, the Member for Fisher, and Ted O’Brien, the Member for Fairfax, who represent parts of our wonderful state electorate of Glass House. The LNP still hold 70% of the Federal seats in Queensland - 21 of 30. The Labor party have dropped to just five. But the big test for the Palaszczuk State Government is that she has now run out of excuses. The Premier can’t blame Canberra anymore.

Following the recent deluge of rain, council crews and contractors have been busy clearing debris and assessing our roads to make sure they are safe. By Mitch Gaynor A PASSION for Tapas has inspired the team behind Clouds Montville to introduce Tapas Afternoons at its stylish Bergin Lounge. Tapas has been finding its mark in the hearts of diners and the Clouds directors have now brought some of their favourite foodie experiences - from Madrid to Barcelona and Sitges - to the hinterland. Diners now not only get to enjoy the speciality plates in style but with the added bonus of panoramic coastal vistas from the Bergin Lounge. “The concept of being able to enjoy shared plates of a variety of small plates was really appealing,” Clouds Director Kaye Smyth said. “Even The Sunshine Coast Curated Plate event by-line, this year is -2022 sized plates.” The Bergin Lounge Tapas Afternoons offer a wide range of plates to suit all tastes, but staff favourites are the Stuffed Pumpkin Flowers and the Pistachio, Lemon and Saffron Risotto Croquette. “Most of us have memories of the old pork croquettes – but croquettes take a totally new life in a Tapas context,” Kaye

said. Each dish is served with Clouds Gourmet Pantry sauce and relishes. Diners have also been pleasantly surprised by the desserts, which include Green Tea Mascarpone Yuzu Tiramisu and Flourless Coffee Stones.

“They have to be tried to be believed,” Kaye said. “Some initially balk at Green Tea Tiramisu – but just want more after their first taste.” The Tapas menu takes the Clouds team in a new direction from its bistro offering so well received at The Barrel. But one thing that doesn’t change is their focus on working with Queensland producers from wineries to gin distillers to food suppliers.

“Our philosophy of showcasing south-east Queensland carries through to all we have to offer in the likes of our award -winning gins produced by Beachtree Distillery on the Sunshine Coast, our produce and our meats, where our preference is to source locally,” Kaye said. “And when many think of wine, they are more inclined to think Hunter Valley, Yarra Valley and so on. Queensland can be rightfully proud of the wines we produce. Our wines are mainly sourced from the Granite

Belt.” Tapas Afternoons (Noon to 5pm) are held at Bergin Lounge at Clouds Montville each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as public holidays.

Think before plating up on vegan food

MORE Australians are adopting vegetarian and plant-based diets, with many choosing to cut their intake of meat – and even fish, dairy, and eggs – to improve their health. While making such changes can be beneficial to health, Dr Andrew Thompson, a registered doctor at InstantScripts, warns that it could lead to poorer health outcomes if not done properly. He says switching to a plant-based diet risks lower nutrients and a higher intake of processed alternatives. Dr Thompson said if Australians make poor choices when switching to a plant-based diet, they can risk becoming deficient in vital vitamins and nutrients. Dr Thompson reveals five common

Great looking groundcovers such as Brachyscomes, Lobelias, Fan flowers – Scaevolas and Plumbago are also ready to plant. THE rain has finally eased, the sun has come out and the garden will need some extra TLC. But so do you, the guardian of the garden. There was also a Ladies Single Stable Competition played on the same day with first place going to Debbie Hansen with 31 points, runner-up was Karen Heading with 29 points and third place going to Heather Shortus with 26 points. Contributed by Ken Barker WELL, it was beginning to seem like groundhog day here in Maleny, waking each day to nothing but mist outside the window along with anything varying from drizzle to pouring rain. Put that together with the great event of the Maleny Show happening at the showgrounds on Saturday May 28 and much of our usual play has been curtailed. On Thursday May 26, two hardy players ventured onto the lawns when a break in the weather presented itself. Lynette Evans was joined by Dianne Horsman for a lively game of singles, with Dianne narrowly winning the match with a score of 15 to Lynette’s 13 hoops. Sunday May 29 saw more players come out to enjoy the lovely sunny afternoon with two games played. Dianne played a game of singles against Sarah Widin in a close match-up with Sarah scoring 15

hoops to 13. Meanwhile, Helen Andrews paired up with Nick Cram in another close run match-up against Wallace Roy and Kath Smith. Helen and Nick narrowly won with 12 hoops to 10. Pennants matches have also been disrupted by rain with the Bray Cup tournament match of our away game against Bribie Island cancelled due to flooding on their lawns. In the spirit on good gamesmanship, it was decided to split the points between the two teams. This Saturday, we are hosting Bribie at home in the Bray Cup tournament and we wish Wallace, Kath and Lynette a great day of play. Olympic soccer hopeful rises through the ranks BEERWAH State High student Amali Kinsella has been picked for the under 17s women’s national soccer squad, following selection in the Queensland Academy of School team last year. Previously she played for the local Caboolture club team since she was five years old and has been representing Queensland in national competitions since she was ten. 16-year-old Amali is in year 11 at school and had a mixed reaction when she got the call to train in the nationals squad. “I was really excited but I was nervous because we got the call up a week before going so it was kind of short notice,” she said. “It was really exciting because everything, all my hard work is paying off, it’s been what I’ve wanted to do for a long time.” She was offered the opportunity to start training with the national squad while playing in the QAS soccer team, which is a pathway to higher levels, leading right up to the Olympics. “I got an email last year asking if I wanted to be a ‘train-on’, just come down once a week and start training, I took that position then this year I went full time with them,” she said. “I was already in the top 80 for Australia and getting watched at the time, then I got emailed and asked to

Jonti, Amali, Daisy, Charlie, and Maggie come up to the training camp.” Amali’s love for the game started at a young age, when her parents - who both played soccer - put her into the sport and she’s never looked back since, especially now being in such an elite squad. “I’m just going to keep striving to be in the team, as well as the squad, keep playing well, training hard, and getting as many opportunities,” she said. “Obviously the big dream is to compete in the Olympics at home in 2032 at Brisbane.” Assuming she makes the official team, their first big competition will be the World Cup which will take place next year.

A Grade men’s and women’s Bulldogs deliver biggest win of the season against Gympie

THE Beerwah Bulldogs A Grade men’s team beat the Gympie Devils 48-18, at Beerwah Sportsground on June 4, piling on nine tries in a formidable display. It is the most points the team has scored in a game this season, with three tries in the first half before they turned up the heat with six tries in the second. Centre Nic Jennings scored a double in the second half and Connah Mills scored the first and last try of the game for the Bulldogs. Sam Humphreys also secured a try, as well as Daemon Cruise, who scored a total of 30 points between this game and the reserve grade game as he was asked 44

to fill in for the A grade at short notice. A Grade coach Brett Hill he spoke about the big win right after the game saying the team had been edging towards a strong victory. “It’s good, we have been building towards it,” he said, “Actually it was a good result because we had a couple players pull out this morning so it’s a really good effort and I’m proud of everybody.” The Beerwah Bulldogs open women’s team also secured their biggest win of the season against the Gympie Devil’s, beating them 30-10 after not playing for four weeks.

Legacy for future Olympians A SUNSHINE Coast Olympics legacy group has been formed by council to gauge how the community would like to be involved with the 2032 Brisbane Games. The group, which includes individuals representing diverse backgrounds, will create a document which will be handed to council with ideas on how the Olympics could positively impact the community. Some of the members include Blake Cochrane who is representing Olympians and Paralympians, Mark Henricks (Sport and Active Recreation), and Emma Josey (Youth). The chair of the group, Dr Bridie Kean, told GC&M News what the group will focus in the lead-up to the Brisbane Games, based on their first meeting which occurred at the start of May. “A large theme throughout the night was how we engage youth and I actually see it as how we can get everyone in the community more active as a result of hosting these games,” she said. “Specifically for young people who have that potential to compete for Australia in 2032, I think that’s a really exciting part of it.”

The group will have a focus on providing more opportunities for people with a disability who are Paralympic hopefuls, as well as those who won’t be competing at an elite level. “Sport is for everyone, I’m really passionate about providing opportunities with those with a disability which we just have far less of in general, and so we really need to do what we can to provide more opportunities,” she said. Although the legacy group won’t specifically be linked to any organisations such as the Queensland Academy of Sport (QAS), Dr Kean is a board member of the QAS and speaks highly of their initiatives to identify young talent. “Everyone’s got a role to play in 2032 whether it’s at the legacy level or identification of talent, to me it all links into that,” she said. Local talents such as Beerwah Bulldogs player Jordan Jackson, soccer player Amali Kinsella and volleyball player Olivia McKenzie are among the many from our region who are already in the QAS training programs.

Tibros win training session with USC Thunder The Tibro’s Netball Club had the chance to train with semi-professional netball team the USC Thunder last week, thanks to a local radio competition. President of the Tibro’s Anna Guthrie said she and the club were extremely grateful to Hot 91.1FM and USC Thunder for winning the session via the station’s win website page. “Training sessions with Thunder girls and the lightning is always a fantastic opportunity for our young players particularly, to see where they can get to, something to aspire to,” she said. “It’s fabulous to have Thunder girls down here representing their club and

showing the girls a bit of netball this afternoon.” As for Netball in general, Anna said she is excited to continue to watch the growth of netball in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. “Netball as a whole has grown in its capacity since we have our own national team, so the lightning have done wonders in promoting the sport,” she said. “With the way housing is booming around here, we’re growing as a club, we’re evolving every year, taking on new kids from all ages, and we also have our social club as well.”

Inclusive ashes back after three year halt THE 8th of June marks the first Inclusion Series Ashes game since Australia lost in 2019, with the series played at the Australian Cricket Campus over two and a half weeks. Intellectual disability team coach Nathan Dodd said the team will be very different this year, giving them a better shot at winning the Ashes back from England. “We’ve got a bit of a different squad this year as well with some new players that have come in, some new younger players,” he said. “We are really looking forward to seeing how they perform, hopefully we can win a few games.” There will be three disability teams competing for Australia - intellectual disability, blind and deaf - and each team will play five T20 games and three international one-day games. The team convened on June 2 for orientation and got into training for the following days after leading up to the first match. The orientation will be crucial for the team to get to know each other. “We’ve got basically a week together before that first game so that allows us some time to reconnect and get some plans in place to how we are going to

play before that first game,” he said. “I think when everyone is there tomorrow is when it’ll sink in and there will be a lot of excitement around the guys just being back together and being able to play the game that they love playing.” As for players such as Hayden Brumm and Lachlan MacRae, who coach Dodd is excited to see play, Nathan said they are excited to represent Australia while playing cricket, no matter their differences. “Our guys always talk about ability over disability, cricket is a sport for all,” he said. “To be able to have these opportunities for these guys to play at an international level and represent their country, it means as much to them as it does to Pat Cummins or Alyssa Healy.”

Young Beerwah taekwondo black belt goes international THE San Training Centre will be taking students to Korea this month to compete in an international competition. It will be 16-year-old rising star Charlie Bidgood’s first opporuntity to show his skills at an international level. The second band black belt is a member of the Queensland highperformance pathway program, which entails training at UQ twice a week, as well as continuing training at the San Training centre every week. When he competes in Korea, Charlie will be competing alongside other San Training students against international opponents, which he said is keen for. “I really excited, definitely a little bit nervous… because it’s my first ever international competition,” he said. “I know the standard of fighting is really high over there, so I know if I want to do well I’m going to have to be on my best game.” To make an exciting experience even better, he will also be taking part in a two week long training camp with local taekwondo clubs in Korea. He will also be trying out for the junior

world championship selections this month, and when asked about how he is being given the opportunity to try out, Charlie was quite humble in his response. “It’s been a fair few years of really hard training, taking all the advice I can get from my coach, and continuing to work on my weaknesses until they are not my weaknesses anymore,” he said. “The ... normal rule of thumb is if you win that competition, you’re on the team to go to worlds, so the goal is to get gold. “If you get gold at the competition, they’ll put you on the team and I’m pretty sure that’s over in Belgium around August or September.”

Local athlete has high hopes for her future Beerwah boxer set to fight on World Title card BEERWAH Bulldogs Hooker Jordan Jackson is a jack of all trades, playing everything from union to netball, and is now a Sunshine Coast Falcons player. Jackson started playing rugby league for Blackwater when she was 11, and then joined the Beerwah Bulldogs when she moved to the Sunshine Coast this year. At the moment, she is playing for the Falcons, the Bulldogs and the USC Barbarians which is the Sunshine Coast’s rugby union team; but for Jordan, it’s easy to stay motivated. “It’s a bit of a struggle but just time management is everything and sorting out what you need to do for the week… my calendar is hectic,” she said. “I just really like to train, it’s just my favourite thing to do so it’s pretty easy to stay motivated. “But there’s other days where I’m not feeling it, and you just got to keep training for the team, you’ve got to put the team first, I can’t let them down.” Jackson also speaks highly of the Beerwah Bulldogs and said she will not allow herself to let her team down. “It’s really good, it’s a lovely club and it’s really welcoming and supportive of Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

everyone,” she said. “I think we have been getting pretty good. The combinations are starting to really form, and everyone is starting to get along really well.” The Bulldogs Hooker benefits greatly from union as well to improve her rugby league skills. “I think it’s a great sport for fitness especially and tackle technique because you just want to get them to the ground and bulldoze them,” she said. “I like to play seven a side union. It’s really good for passing as well because you have to cover so much distance, it’s really good for honing your long passes.” But she doesn’t just play to improve her rugby league game - although she does want to play for the NRLW one day - she also wants to compete at an elite level for union. “I’ve always wanted to go to the Olympics so that’s why I’m still playing union as well to try to get into the sevens team,” she said. BOXER Dana Coolwell could not be getting a better preparation ahead of his next bout after sparring with George Kambosos Junior earlier this month. Dana’s most recent fight, which was a loss against Ender Luces, forced Coolwell to focus on some technique improvements ahead of his next fight on the Gold Coast on July 2. Coolwell was lucky enough to go to Sydney to spar with Kambosos Jr, saying it was an invaluable experience. “It was for sparring mainly for his prep, he’s got a big fight coming up, and it was really good, I learnt a lot too,” he said. “I learnt distance control, controlling my pace with my jab, and foot range too, so lots of little things.” His opponent for the fight will be Filipino Lorenz Ladrada and Dana said he is keen to get back into the ring for the fight. “I’m really excited and I’m pumped, it’s a good card with lots of exposure on it and I’m happy to be on another card,” he said. “I want to get back into the winning circle, get another win under my belt, and start to build a record again.” Not only has Dana been training with

other successful boxers, but he has also gone up a weight division, from super feather weight to feather weight, without any hassle. “So far, it’s pretty good, I dropped a bit of weight pretty quickly…I can make the weight pretty easy,” he said. “I just thought I’d be bigger and stronger at this weight, we’ve always thought we could make it but just never really had a reason to, but we thought we might as well give it a go now.” Dana is confident about winning his upcoming fight and has worked on his downfalls from his last fight, to ensure he will secure the win against Ladrada.
