What's Happening February 2018

Last Friday we were grabbing some breakfast at Landsborough when we spotted a group of Sunshine Coast Council staff who were huddled around a mature Water Gum tree being unloaded from the back of a ute with a crane. At first I thought of the old joke about ‘how many people do you need to change a lightbulb’, but as a former council employee, I thought I should give them the benefit of the doubt. We headed over to the park to ask whether or not the tree had some special significance that required it to be at the centre of so much attention. Things soon became clear; the tree was being used as a central element to council’s Place Making process that is currently underway for Landsborough. On Sunday, as part of the community visioning day, the tree was festooned with coloured ribbons, and used for people to tie their wishes, hopes and dreams for Landsborough’s future on. And just in case you are wondering why I have explained all of this – well, to give you a bit of context for the front page photo. Regards,

Local News Parking confusion in Maleny

By Lea Parkes Finding a car park for workers, locals and visitors to Maleny can be a challenging proposition at any time, however additional angst was created last week when locals saw Sunshine Coast Council’s advertisement in the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News. The ad published included a council supplied map featuring the location of Maleny’s ‘Regulated Parking’ area which was mislabeled as ‘Enforced 2P parking’. Maleny Commerce President Spencer Shaw, who has been liaising extensively with council over the issue of parking in the commercial precinct for the past few years, quickly spotted the error and alerted council to the mistake. Mr Shaw also requested that council postpone the introduction of the enforcement (fines) of timed parking in Maleny, from the advertised February 1 date, until this matter could be resolved. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay quickly took to social media to clarify the situation, explaining that the published map actually indicated the streets that will be subject to regulated parking, and advised the community that timed parking is only in Maple Street, Coral Street (opposite the library), Landsborough-Maleny Road and Lawyer Street, with each of these areas being signed with appropriate signage indicating the parking requirements.

Cr McKay said that council regulation, to ensure motorists are parked legally, will be occurring in the streets indicated on the map, with offences targeted including (but not limited to) parking in no parking areas, parking in bus stops, and parking on yellow lines. “There is no current proposal for additional timed parking in Myrtle or Coral Streets (other than opposite the library),” she said. Maleny Commerce support regulated parking in Maleny’s commercial precinct. “This includes not only timed parking, which is important to facilitate turnover of car parks in high use areas, such as Maple Street, but all-day parking, emergency access, no parking areas (yellow lines) and disabled parking throughout the regulated parking area as well,” Mr Shaw said. Council has advised that the enforcement of the two-hour parking will now commence from March 1. A correction advertisement featuring the revised map and explanation appears on page 8 of this edition.

With public submissions now open for the next 10 NBN microwave towers development applications being considered by Sunshine Coast Council, Peachester residents Adam Deluca and David Evans want local residents to understand what they say are the scientifically proven cancer risks associated with microwave towers. The proposed Peachester microwave tower is located on Old Peachester Road along with others at Conondale, near Mary Cairncross Reserve, Balmoral Ridge, Beerburrum and Glass House Mountains. Mr Deluca said that he wants people to understand what he says are the serious cancer implications associated with NBN Fixed Wireless Microwave Towers and NBN home installed microwave wireless transmitters if the proposed towers are approved. “In June 2017, Dr Anthony B. Miller, an international expert cancer researcher and advisor to the World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer, issued his scientific opinion that microwave radiation, (including those emitted by NBN Fixed Wireless Microwave Towers) fully meets the criteria to be classified as a ‘Group 1 carcinogen to humans’,” said Mr Deluca. “This is based on scientific evidence associating microwave exposure to cancer development and cancer promotion, meaning that the radiation would join other known cancer-causing agents in Group 1 such as tobacco and asbestos.” Mr Evans is calling on the Sunshine Coast Council to stop approving any NBN fixed wireless

microwave installations until the Sunshine Coast Council can obtain proof that these microwave installations do provide a ‘zero harm’ environment. “I am asking the council to fulfil their fundamental obligations and fulfil their duty of care to protect the community from a probable ‘Group 1 carcinogen to humans’,” said Mr Evans. “The council must take seriously the eminent advice of world leaders in cancer development, such as Dr Miller, and stop subjecting us, our children and the generations to come, to the horrifying effects of microwave radiation.” To this end, Mr Evans is imploring residents to say ‘No’ to all NBN Fixed Wireless Towers. Mr Evans and Mr Deluca have created a guide to help people send a properly made submission to council, calling on them to refuse the NBN Microwave Tower development applications. “We have put together a document that people can use when making their submission to council. I ask all Peachester locals and surrounding concerned residents and anyone else who wants to help protect our communities from this cancer-causing pollution, to take a stand and make a submission to council rejecting these developments,” Mr Deluca said. New doctor for Maleny

Maleny’s medical workforce is set to expand with the arrival of a new doctor, Dr Wei Ching (Wayne) Lee, one of 130 doctors who have undertaken a James Cook University (JCU) program training general practitioners. Dr Lee will split his time between training at the Medicine on Maple GP clinic in Maleny and the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital, and brings two years of postgraduate training in hospital rotations and critical care to his new role. Dr Lee said he is looking forward to settling into his new community after recently making the move from Rockhampton to Mooloolah Valley. “I’m really looking forward to meeting the local team, getting regular contact with the local people and integrating into the community,” he said. “Maleny is a beautiful place. The people have been really nice so far and I’m excited about helping the local community and learning alongside my colleagues too. When asked what had attracted him to train as a GP, Dr Lee said he was passionate about connecting with people and learning about their needs. “I believe that being a GP is about more than just the clinical knowledge, but also taking a holistic approach to care,” he said. “We don’t just look after people’s physical health, we also check in with them about their mental wellbeing. The continuity of care in general practice is what attracted me the most because you get to journey with your patients. “It is just such a privilege to be part of their stories.” JCU’s Generalist Medical Training Director, Associate Professor Peta-Ann Teague, said the new GPs will help to fill workforce gaps in many parts of Queensland. "We dedicate time and resources to matching applicants with training posts that will benefit their careers as well as the community,” she said. “I’m looking forward to seeing these enthusiastic doctors make a real difference in their communities, particularly those communities who most need them.”

By Lea Parkes Australia Day turned into a cause for celebration for one Kiwi tourist visiting Glass House Mountains, after staff Katrina Kingdom and Kristy Winter from CJ’s Pastries found her wallet containing a significant amount of cash for her holiday and handed the wallet into the Beerwah Police. Senior Constable Susan Lowndes said that the lady was one very happy tourist once she was reunited with her wallet. The bakery staff only realised that the customer had left the purse after she had driven out of the car park. They expected that the owner would return to collect the wallet, but when she didn’t they contacted the police. The police found enough information in the wallet to identify a Facebook account and from there located some of the tourist’s friends who lived locally and who managed to make contact with her. “Our happy friend from across the ditch was very grateful to the bakery staff for their honesty and to the Beerwah Police for their efforts to return her property,” Senior Constable Lowndes said. Eating disorder rehabilitation centre proposed for Mooloolah Mooloolah could be the home of the first facility of its kind in Australia if the application currently before Sunshine Coast Council to establish an eating disorder rehabilitation facility is approved. The 10.2 hectare Old Gympie Road property is currently zoned ‘Rural’, with the material change of use application seeking to change that to something more aligned with the eating disorder treatment proposal. The facility is to be run through ‘EndED’, an organisation providing support and a network base for those suffering from eating disorders and their families and carers. The planning report submitted to council explains that the facility “… provides full time care and rehabilitation for persons suffering from various eating disorders. The use is to establish a national first best practice facility offering an excellent alternative to hospitals in the treatment of eating disorders. The use involves specialised residential treatment centre providing intensive inpatient and outpatient services. “Furthermore, it will act as a centre for excellence for the treatment of Eating Disorders (ED) while working to coordinate treatments with complementary spoke [sic] services being delivered across Queensland and Australia.” The facility is described as the first of its kind in Australia and will be modelled off existing similar

facilities operating in the United States. The development proposes to create accommodation for up to 12 eating disorder sufferers, quarters for carers to reside, a carer training facility, covered outdoor activities area, stables and a storage building, with a total of 20 car parking spaces provided. Letters of support from Mayor Mark Jamieson and Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace accompany the application. Mr Wallace’s letter details his personal experience with eating disorders resulting from his daughter receiving treatment. “I have seen first hand that eating disorders can be appropriately managed with expert care and treatment,” writes Mr Wallace, “but there must be a facility which can provide the type of stepped treatment to meet the often regularly changing needs of the sufferer. “My research and personal experience has also demonstrated that the family of those suffering from eating disorders must also be actively engaged and involved in the treatment, as they will ultimately be the sufferer’s main caregivers.” More information on the application can be found at www.pdonline.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for MCU18/0010. Vale Serena Stanley The Maleny community recently lost one of the town’s talented young people when 17-yearold Serena Stanley lost her life in a horse riding accident on Sunday January 28 in Melbourne. The former Maleny High School student had only finished high school in November last year, and was just starting out on her adult journey with a job at a horse stud. Serena had won numerous awards for her riding and represented the Maleny & District Horse and Pony Club at both club and zone level, competing and winning at State level in Show Jumping and was the Interschool National Champion in Show Jumping in 2015. Serena leaves behind her parents River and Sandy and brothers Bradley and Jesse. Close family friends initiated a Go-Fund-Me page to

assist the family in the coming months and to give them some time to heal together and mend the broken pieces of their hearts. Jewellery allegedly stolen by employee recovered Last Tuesday detectives from Maroochydore executed a search warrant on a Peachester address where they located an amount of jewellery which had been allegedly stolen from a Horton Parade store. Detectives identified and recovered jewellery subject to the theft. This included nineteen gold rings and two silver bracelets.

It is alleged the jewellery had been stolen from the Horton Parade jeweller over the recent Christmas period by a former employee. Police will also allege that the 19-year-old former employee utilised Facebook accounts with false particulars to try to sell the rings matching the description of those stolen from the business. As a result the 19-year-old woman was taken into custody and will appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on February 16.

By Mike Turner One of the things that make Glasshouse Country great is its people. We are fortunate to have many locals who really care about our community and contribute in such a positive way. Martin and Chris Bell are one such couple calling Glasshouse Country home for many years. Lots of readers will know of them through the numerous groups that they have been a part of over the years. In fact, for a while Chris was known as ‘Mrs Beerwah’. Martin, Chris and their children moved to Beerwah from Melbourne in 1984, when they bought a five acre block of land next to what was then the Queensland Reptile Park. On this land they set up a popular tourist attraction called the ‘Tram Stop’ which appeared a number of times on TV shows. Martin built all the one-third sized trams which would take tourists on rides around the property. Chris shared with me how proud she was of what Martin achieved in building the trams and running this successful business. Martin and Chris started attending the local Uniting Church and it wasn’t long before Chris had rolled up her sleeves to take on responsibilities with the church council. She has been serving as secretary at the church now for over 30 years. Chris was also the secretary of the Beerwah Business Association for 13 years, where she worked hard to promote the local businesses and attractions of our beautiful region when it was bypassed by what was then a brand new Bruce Highway.

Chris and her team ran a stall at Expo ’88 in Brisbane in an effort to showcase the Glass House Mountains area. Chris was also the president of the Beerwah Squash Club which used to be located in Swan Street. When she told me this, I was like, “Oh wow! Beerwah had a squash club?” business, ‘Martin and Chris Ride-On Mowing’, working as contractors for the local council. I met Martin and Chris when I started in my role as chaplain of Beerwah High School in 2007. Chris was the chairperson of the chaplaincy committee then and had been for about 10 years or so. She has been an incredible supporter for me in the 11 years that I have worked at the high school – faithfully working behind the scenes with fundraising events to enable our chaplaincy service to keep running. In recent years, Chris has been the coordinator and a teacher of the U3A’s Beerwah Grafx Group which is linked to the University of the Sunshine Coast and based at the library. One of the things I like the most about Martin and Chris Bell is that they support each other. Chris has always backed Martin in his business ventures or whatever he is doing and Martin is always there to support Chris with the various community groups that she is investing into. They are best friends and I think that is brilliant. As both of them are currently dealing with health challenges they have decided to pull back a bit from their busy lives to rest. I think we as a community have been very blessed to have a couple like Martin and Chris Bell as locals. They are people who work hard, but also take their role as community members seriously. Chris simply puts it as, “We just got involved to get things done, and in the process have been able to work alongside some great people.” So, Martin and Chris, thank you so much for all that you have done in your contribution to Glasshouse Country. Thank you for the hard work and care that you have shown in all that you do. We wish you the very best for your future.

In the early 1990s Chris, alongside other community leaders, was a member of the committee which was responsible for setting up the Beerwah State High School. Until Beerwah High was founded, students had to travel to Maleny, Caboolture or Caloundra to attend a high school. Chris speaks fondly of these times saying that the area with its country lifestyle was a great place to raise a family. She remembers the way her kids would go to Beerwah Primary School in bare feet. In 1994, Martin and Chris sold their block to Steve and Terri Irwin and it is now part of Australia Zoo, and went on running their other

Community News Alexander McCall Smith returns to Maleny

Outspoken begins its 2018 season on Saturday March 10 with a major event: a conversation with Scottish author Alexander McCall Smith. On the 20th anniversary of the publication of ‘The No 1 Ladies Detective Agency’, Mr McCall Smith is making one of his occasional visits to Australia and has kindly agreed to return to Maleny for a conversation with local author Steven Lang. Alexander McCall Smith is one of the world’s most popular authors. He began his career as a professor of medical law, working for many years in universities in the United Kingdom and abroad (including in his beloved Botswana). After the publication of his highly successful ‘No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency’ series – which has sold over twenty million copies – he devoted his time to writing fiction. His novels generally fall into different series, as

well as several stand-alone novels, along with collections of short stories, academic works, and over thirty books for children, and he has received numerous awards for his writing. He will be talking about his most recent books, ‘The Good Pilot Peter Woodhouse’ (a wartime romance), ‘A Time of Love and Tartan’ (a 44 Scotland Street novel) and ‘Precious and Grace’ (a No 1 Ladies' Detective Novel). Tree clearing approval sought at Teak Street, Maleny An application has been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council for the landholder (Solac No 14. Pty Ltd) at 6 Teak Street, Maleny to clear vegetation off the almost two hectare block. According to the application plan, the ‘operational works permit’ seeks to tidy the land parcel and remove the extensive weed growth, including Camphor Laurels, on the site. A total of 3,005 sqm of land, which holds most of the site's remaining vegetation is to be cleared.

The block of land is located directly behind the Mitre 10 and Post Office and abuts the pathway behind the River Centre connecting to the Maleny Precinct. The plan notes that off-set planting is proposed at a number of possible sites. The clearing will be done by a suitably qualified contractor, with a wildlife spotter engaged. RangeCare has benefited from donations contributed by visitors to the Christmas Tree Festival held in December at the Maleny Uniting Church. Last week, Uniting Church Minister Rev Catherine Solomon and members of the Maleny Uniting Church presented $2,000 to RangeCare’s CEO Jenny McCafferty. The presentation took place at The Cottage, RangeCare’s dedicated social respite centre in Flaxton, with staff and clients present. In receiving the donation, Jenny said: “All donations that we receive are directed back to providing care to people in our community. “These generous donations from members of the community and the Maleny Uniting Church will be put to very good use at our social respite centre to improve activities for our guests, and we thank everyone who made a donation.” Committee chairperson Murray Robertson said the Christmas Tree Festival held at the Maleny Uniting Church, and now into its seventh year, has widespread support from many groups and organisations in the area. “This year we had three new groups submitting trees in this noncompetitive event. People of all ages are well catered for and many families now put the festival on their ‘must do’ lists for Christmas.” Plans are already in place for 2018. At the recent Hinterland Australia Day Expo, QCWA Maleny ladies were busy drumming up interest for an important upcoming event they are organising which will raise awareness and funds for diabetes. QCWA Maleny members Sara Faddy, Cynthia Daniels and Judy Stubbs Sara Faddy, with Cynthia Daniels and joined forces with personal train er Blake Campbell-Hoffman and Judy personal trainer Blake Stubbs Campbell-Hoffman to help promote the event billed as a ‘Diabetes Awareness Morning’, which is being planned for Monday March 19 at the Maleny Community Centre. Hosted jointly by QCWA Maleny branch and QCWA Country Kitchens, the diabetes awareness event will also feature delicious baked goodies, guest speakers, stalls, raffles and giveaways. The event also supports the goals of the QCWA State Health Awareness Campaign for 2018, and personal trainer Blake will be highlighting the importance of exercise by getting attendees to get up and exercise between speakers at the morning tea. The morning tea will kick off at 9.30am and provide a great opportunity to learn more about the different types of diabetes, the risk factors involved, signs and symptoms to look out for and, in the event of diagnosis, what support is available. Branch members are inviting interested groups and individuals to take part or come along and support this important health awareness event. Everyone is welcome. Bankfoot House – 150th anniversary year The volunteers at Bankfoot House recently returned to the House following the Christmas break to find it raining bunya cones. The old Bunya Pine trees on the property have produced their first crop of cones since 2015, a typical three year cycle. Visitors are warned to beware when on the property in the coming weeks. Planning is well underway to celebrate Bankfoot’s sesquicentenary in 2018. In the lead up to the main anniversary celebrations on Sunday October 14, there will be three other events scheduled in the months before. These will reinforce the historical significance of Bankfoot House and its place on the old Cobb and Co coach route that we now call ‘Old Gympie Road’. These events will focus on the Indigenous significance of the area, the old bullock wagon that belonged to William Smith Burgess, and the pioneering families who lived in the House for over 130 years. In a new initiative, the Friends of Bankfoot House will offer ‘Lamp Light Tours’ of the historic house at the public openings on Sunday February 25 and Sunday March 25. Tours will begin at 4.30pm on these dates, with the last tour to begin at 7.30pm. NOTE: these opening hours will be instead of the usual opening of 10am to 3pm on these two days. Visitors being guided through the house at night can expect a different experience compared with the daytime tours. Evening tours may observe home entertainment from times past such as cards, checkers, knitting, reading the Bible and playing the pianola. Living - Music Faith i Branko Quartet comes to Maleny

With numerous performance accolades and rave press reviews, the Faith i Branko Quartet (Serbia/UK) will be thrilling local audiences in March. Music Today Look who has just turned 80!

It is never too late to excite a passion for music. Yours may have been lying dormant for many years, or it might not even had had a chance to appear in your busy life! (In which case why not take it up as part of your retirement package?) At the Glasshouse Musos (an open mic session held monthly at Beerwah Hotel and Eudlo Hall) we often enjoy the work of young upstarts, but today we are celebrating some of the community’s most senior musicians – both newcomers and old hands! One such person in his 80th year, is Kevin Smythe, who with his duo partner Carolyn Bates is presently recording an album with me at the Sound Space, and is a good case in point being someone who has found the time in recent years to commit himself to his music. Kevin is not only writing an outstanding collection of original songs, but is also amassing some very fine acoustic guitars, building his skills on them, and performing and recording with his duo partner, and I for one can’t imagine a better way to celebrate turning 80! Kevin is a late starter, but another Musos' regular is 80-year-old Ian B MacLeod, who celebrated his big “O” on January 25 and has quite another story to tell. Ian, known as “Australia’s King of Rockabilly”, made his first stage appearances in the late 50s on the Johnny O’Keefe Show and Bandstand! Johnny gave Ian the stage name Adam, but Ian has returned to his birth name for the stage, and can be found online at www.ianbmac. pinewoodrecords.com.au. With a voice as smooth and as high as mere mortals might only dream of possessing, Ian is still slaying them in the aisles, and if you add to that a very impressive rockabilly guitar technique and a slick stage presentation, you have the ultimate popular musician’s package! Ian’s well known for his Elvis tributes but it is really the music of Carl Perkins (the writer of Blue Suede Shoes, Honey Don’t, and Boppin’ the Blues) and Slim Whitman (he of the 3-octave vocal range), that Ian most looks to for his inspiration. At his shows of course, you’ll hear music as varied as that of Roy Orbison, Frank Ifield, John Denver and the occasional original ballad, so “our Ian” is not just a “Rockabilly King”! For myself – in my early 60s – musicians such as Kevin and Ian are an inspiration. I have always expected that music - with performing, recording and concert production as my passions, would accompany me throughout my life. And I had always imagined (or at least hoped) that an artist only ever retired when their heart finally stopped beating. It seems like as soon as the graduation ceremonies and celebrations end, it’s time to prepare for another school year. The first week back is such an exciting week for the students, who are ready to meet their new teachers, show pride with their back to school clothes and reconnect with friends to go over what happened on their holidays. Landsborough State School has started the year by welcoming Principal Benjamin Gaske, who has relocated from Port Douglas. During his first week, Ben had the pleasure of getting to know the amazing students and dedicated staff at Landsborough and one of his takeaways from his conversations has been the enthusiasm and pride for the school and the community. It is with the same enthusiasm and pride that he looks forward to working with all members of the school community to ensure success for all students.

Contributed by Michelle Lenz Mooloolah State School held its annual Swimming Carnival on February 1. It was a fantastic day with many enthusiastic swimmers, and a tough competition with Maddock sports house winning by one point. There were many family and community members there to spectate and cheer on our swimmers. Some of these people also volunteered their time to help with the sausage sizzle, sell drinks or time keep at the swimming event. The day began with swimmers taking to the water in 200m, 100m and 50m events. Then other events followed such as Individual Medley and 800m. They swam hard despite the rain and managed to get all their programmed events in. All the students showed amazing team spirit and true sportsmanship with the way they encouraged each other and cheered for not only the winner

Maddock Captains with the trophy but for everyone to finish. Some of the winners on the day will go on to represent the school at districts. Age champions were: nine-year-olds, Eli Hackney and Stephanie Stewart; 10-year-olds, William Ward and Bonnie Muller; 11-year-olds, Ryan Venditti-Bradeley and Scarlett Dickson; and 12-year-olds, Zachary Stewart and Gema Atkinson. Encouragement awards went to Chevy Berrell and Maddy Tanner and Overall age champions were Ryan Venditti-Bradeley and Bonnie Muller. See page 37 for age champion photo.

Science classes are so ‘cool’ Year 8 science students at Beerwah State High School were well and truly engaged when they experimented using liquid nitrogen to make ice cream. Kicking off the consultation with ‘Beers and Ideas’ at the Landsborough Pub went well with a good bunch of people dropping in to view the information panels and talk to the place making team and myself. This really is your chance to help shape the town's future and we want to hear from you! The first and current phase of community engagement is the ‘Values and Visioning’ phase. Council would love to hear your thoughts on how Landsborough could be upgraded. The project team will collate and review all feedback from the first phase of engagement and develop a draft master plan. The draft master plan will be presented to the community in early May 2018 for further feedback as part of the second phase of community engagement. Now is the time to get involved! Glasshouse District Park update

It is looking like March will see the official opening and media event for the Glass House Mountains District Park. The project is jointly between council and the Queensland State Government via the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program. As you probably already know, our new and pretty amazing park consists of a customised playground, shade sail and stone pitched seating walls, a new public amenities building, shelter with tables, seating, barbecue facilities and drinking fountains, fenced dog off-leash area, bench seats overlooking the lake, pathways, landscaping and drainage works and a 15 bay car park. Keep an eye out for the confirmed opening details for March and join the festivities!

State Member for Caloundra Landsborough Place Making It has been said that there is more than $10b being and to be invested across the Coast, including the University Hospital, Kawana Health Precinct, Caloundra South, expansion of the airport at Maroochydore and the new Maroochydore CBD. So, today is the day for the “railway towns” including Landsborough to decide how they will capitalise on these projects. Businesses and communities are gearing up to get the dollars and people to their area. This will mean increased activity for current businesses, new businesses, and a vibrant community. So it was with pleasure that last week I attended the first of the Sunshine Coast Council’s consultations for their proposed ‘Landsborough Place Making’ program. Council has identified Landsborough as a town that could benefit from “future thinking” and business owners and residents have been invited to share their visions for the Landsborough of the future. I want to thank Cr Baberowski who made the commitment late last year to start this process and he has ensured that it began early in 2018. The community has an opportunity to have a say in what Landsborough can and should be culturally, environmentally and economically. This is an important step forward so I encourage everyone to lend their voice to this discussion. If we are going to create plans that help Landsborough survive and thrive, it is the people who call the town home or who run their businesses there who can help shape what that plan should be. The next two stages of the engagement process will occur in May and June 2018, so there is still plenty of opportunity to become involved. Hearing from our community about the impact of Ice addiction In recent years there has been an increase in the use of methamphetamines and in particular, Ice. Let’s not kid ourselves, it is on the Sunshine Coast. Whilst it is important to understand that alcohol is our greatest challenge for substance abuse in our communities, even with only 1.4% of Australians using methamphetamines, it has a catastrophic impact on users extending to their family and community. I’ve met police, ED doctors, nurses and paramedics whose experiences with patients under the influence of Ice are too horrific to be published. Where a person affected by alcohol can be managed by two medical personal or police officers, it can require three times as many if the person has taken Ice. Re: Smart meters

The figures Mr James used (GC&M News, January 24 edition) to show smart meters are no worse than any other microwave devices are without any values – 3290 of what? And the issue of ARPANSA's safety standards have been discussed before. What he's not mentioned here is that these "safe levels" are only for protection against immediate thermal hazards (tissue heating) at high level exposures and not against possible prolonged or bio-cumulative effects from low intensity environmental RF exposures. If you start checking through many other country's standards you will find countries like China, Russia, Japan, India, Belgium and many others have standards of safety much more cautious that Australia's. Australia, the USA and Canada are behind the latest safety levels as is ARPANSA. Some electronic smart meters give false readings that are up to 582% higher than actual energy consumption. This emerged from a study carried out by the University of Twente (UT) in Holland, in collaboration with the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. Prof Frank Leferink of the UT estimates that potentially inaccurate meters have been installed in hundreds of thousands of Dutch households. In Victoria when smart meters were introduced consumers often found their bills rocketed. Smart Meters are easy targets for hackers within the electric grid – there have been US Congressional testimonies by experts revealing that utility smart meters increase the vulnerability of our electric grid to cyber-attacks. Cities around the world are becoming increasingly

smart, which creates potential for future cyber attacks, says Cesar Cerrudo, Chief Technology Officer, IOActive Labs. Smart meters have caused thousands of fires and explosions across Canada and the USA and in Victoria (Australia). Re: ‘Blasé politicians’

I want to assure readers, and one Graeme Robinson (letter in GC&M News, January 31) in particular, that I have no intention of taking a rest for the next three years. The people of Glass House elected me to fight for them and that’s what I’ll be doing every day for as long as I can. Speaking of unkempt roadsides, just this week I’ve been holding Transport and Main Roads feet to the fire over the shoddy maintenance of the Blackall Range tourist routes. This includes Landsborough-Maleny Road, Maleny-Montville Road, Montville-Mapleton Road, Maleny-Stanley River Road, and Maleny-Kenilworth Road. These are some of the most scenic roads in Glass House, which we promote to Australia and the world, and the lacklustre effort by TMR to keep them neat and tidy is deplorable! Two-hour parking

The recent installation of several visually offensive two-hour parking signs along Maple Street is indicative of a disturbing change in the fundamental nature and culture of our beautiful country town. We were regular weekend visitors to Maleny over several years prior to our decision to retire here from Brisbane three years ago. Like most other vacationers (and particularly weekend visitors) we would park our car in one spot and spend several hours injecting a fair amount of money into the local economy through both shopping and dining – and were most happy to do so. There will always be a few people who abuse parking facilities provided, but why discourage those who are happy to visit Maleny and infuse money into our economy over a period well in excess of the two-hour parking limit? May I ask who is going to enforce this twohour restriction and by what method, and what evidence of the benefit of such policing will be made available to local residents to vindicate the hideous proliferation of yet more ugly metal signage concreted into our pavements to blight our historic township? But on the upside, they advertise your property, help screen renters, process applications, and intermediate between you

and the renters during the lease. For many, the commission is worth the peace of mind. Speak to local real estate agents about their commission, and what they can offer you. Your real estate agent should be able to give you an insight into how quickly and easily your home might be rented, and whether there are specific changes you need to make to improve your rental return. To get the best rental return, and meet your responsibilities as a landlord, you need your property to be in a respectable, clean and safe condition. Make sure your property meets safety requirements. Install and check smoke detectors are working. If you have a pool, make sure the pool fence complies with safety requirements. Check the height of balcony and stair railings also comply. Make sure your property is clean, before

leasing it out. Remove rubbish, and items that don’t need to be there. Give the council bins a clean. Tidy the garden, and make sure it’s easy for renters to maintain. While you may not want to invest in a full renovation, it may be worth giving the place a lick of paint, to make it more appealing to renters. Ideally, your property is a clean and safe living environment, and easy to maintain. Once your property is up for lease, you need to contact your home insurance provider, to switch to landlord insurance. Avoid disputes with tenants, and other problems down the line by getting your paperwork in order and knowing your rights and responsibilities. Both you and the tenants should sign a proper lease agreement. Arrange an inspection before tenants move in, to easily identify wear and tear during the

Beatriz, a Mexican masseuse and holistic practitioner living in California, has car trouble which leaves her stranded at the home of wealthy client Cathy, who considers her a friend, Beatriz having helped her teenage daughter deal with cancer. Cathy invites Beatriz to dinner – much to the displeasure of her husband. Two other couples are also invited, including real estate agent mogul Doug. The entire cast are superbly matched as tension simmers throughout the evening with Beatriz and Doug providing a provocative war of words. The Guardian says Salma Hayek “is one of the many joys of this carefully choreographed dinner party satire that acts as a cutting allegory of Trump’s America”. This massive event happens twice a year at the Maleny Showgrounds with 1000s of people attracted from all over the Coast, Brisbane and down to the Gold Coast. Fundraising will also be underway to support Maleny’s Stanley Family who lost their 17-year-old daughter Serena, a well loved Maleny local, in a tragic horse accident on January 28. Donation boxes can be found around the site and at entry gates, and the Recyclerama organisers would love your support to help the family. It’s an early start with gates opening at 7.30am, but it means you will be able to beat the heat. Rob spoke about some of the highlights and activities, including meeting other representatives and visiting interesting gardens in the area and the Batemans Bay botanical gardens. Carrots

It’s always a toss-up whether to allocate space in your garden for at least four months just to grow carrots, when you can buy them for 99 cents a kilo. But growing your own carrots is a simple way to engage kids in the garden, as they can get to eat the baby carrots as you thin them out… and they’re a fairly attractive ferny plant if aesthetics are important. In our climate, to get the best from growing carrots, you normally grow them from March to September/October. So now’s the time to get the soil ready if you want to grow carrots, as their soil requirements are different from many other vegetables. The perfect soil is a loose, friable soil without clumps, stones, bits of wood or newish organic matter… even manures can be a problem. I allocate one end of one of the garden beds exclusively for carrots. Here I dig out the soil, put a dividing wall across to separate it from the rest of the bed, sieve the soil to take out any lumps, rocks, etc, then I mix in lots of medium grained sand (not builders sand and not deco granite… something in between) plus some dolomite, some blood and bone and some gypsum and refill this mix back into the section of the bed I’ve allocated to carrots. The space needs to be large enough so you can have three rotating ‘patches’ – one for seedlings, one for half-grown carrots and one for the carrots ready to pick. And it all needs to be at least 40cm deep to let them grow nice and straight and long. It’s best to grow carrots from packet seed rather than punnet seedlings – they tend to grow as dumpy little globe carrots rather than long ones. I sow them by sprinkling the seeds over the first patch (or third of the bed) and lightly raking it over. Alternatively, you can plant in rows by using your finger to make a shallow mark, then just brushing the soil back over the seeds. You can also mix the seeds with some sand to help space them out. Water them gently so as not to wash them away and then cover it all with a piece of hessian or shade cloth to prevent them from drying out. Lightly water every other day and leave the cover on until you see them germinating, which will take at least two weeks. Once germinated, protect them from the sun for a week by using a raised cover of shade cloth – or I use some old palm fronds. One no-no with carrots is over feeding – which causes them to grow more tops than bottoms. It’s best to feed them a little and not often. Also, letting the soil dry out under them will stunt the downwards growth of the taproot, so frequent watering is a must as they’re growing. As they grow, thin out the seedlings so that they are about 3-4cm apart – this gives space to expand and develop into good sized carrots. Once you can see the carrots are about 1cm across the top, sow the next third of the bed to get them going (same goes them for the last third) – giving you the three-bed rotation for your carrots and a continuous supply. It will take about four months to get a decent sized carrot… or you can pull some as ‘baby’ carrots before if you like. Some may grow a little weirdly, but they’ll still taste the same – or are good in soups, juices and stocks.

Local support for maternity ward The Lions Club of Maleny Blackall Range recently joined with the Smocking Guild of Queensland to present the Maternity Ward of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital with a Masimo Neonatal Pulse Oximeter, which is vital in measuring the amount of oxygen in babies’ blood. The meter was presented by President Colin Sinclair and Robyn Tindal, President of the Guild, to Cheryl Rutherford, the Midwifery Unit Manager, at a Lions’ dinner at The Orangery.

The Lions Club also presented another six bags to the Maternity Ward for DV Connect patients. More than 30 of these bags are required yearly for victims of violence as well as other needy new mothers in the area. They contain all the necessary toiletries and undies for new mums as well as new clothing, disposable nappies, a towel and a handmade felt toy for the new babies, all in a handmade nappy bag for convenience of storing and handling.

From the churches My wife and I were chatting recently over a cuppa about how quickly time is passing by. I am sure you would agree that this feeling would be felt by most people. I often hear these remarks: “I can’t believe it is October already”, or “Is it Thursday already?” I want to mention an old saying that gets used a bit: “Hurry up, let’s go, time is money!” Now, it would seem that this saying is typically blurted out by an ‘A-Type Personality/Business-orientated person’, someone who has a keen sense of the importance of maintaining a good income for a business to function. For me, this old saying has a different meaning, in many ways, time is related to money: people charge for services by the hour, people are paid wages depending on the number of hours we work, the more time we work, the more money we make… so there is an obvious connection. Why is it then that so many of us suffer from the

I think money and time have another similarity. When we get our fortnightly pay, there is a certain amount of money that is deposited into our bank account. Let’s say for argument’s sake that we get paid $336 per fortnight. This means that we only have $336 that we can use for that fortnight. Well, it is the same with time. Each fortnight we are given 336 hours to use. It is entirely our choice how we use each of those 336 hours, but we will never be able to find more hours in that fortnight. It is a fact of life. So… just like a maths equation, we need to sit down and solve this problem. We need to be realistic with our time demands (and money too) so that we have enough time for the things that are important to us. This may require us to set healthy boundaries so that we don’t allow others to rob us of our time. I believe that God wants to help us claim back control of our lives so we can live them well.

Sport Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by David Hayes Welcome back to all the bowlers for 2018, it’s great to see our green back in action. Both our greenkeeper Terry and the boys from the Beerwah Golf Club have spent a lot of time getting our green ready for 2018. We have a busy year ahead. Over the Christmas holidays lots has been happening with our calendar for this year along with the Premier 7s starting. Division 3 and 4 have had a tough start, only winning one game each from five. This week sees the Hinterland teams play their first game away. All teams are up at the club each week, with any questions to be taken by the team managers. Business Bowls got underway for the summer series with another full green. We managed to get the game in just as it started to rain. This night is always good fun and it was great to not only see some familiar faces but quite a few new ones as well. Again a massive thanks to Terry, Liz and Billy for their hard work. Saturday Premier 7s Div 3. Our side overall went down 2-1 to Scarborough, with the Fours having a win. Mac was beaten in the singles, with Scully and Barry Kirk narrowly going down in the pairs. Saturday Premier 7s Div 4. A great 2-1 win to Glasshouse with the Fours getting up as well as Vic Muscat in the singles. Di Hume and Wendy Platt in the pairs have also been playing some brilliant bowls each week. All Hinterland games were washed out. Please remember if you are picked as a reserve in any competition you are expected to turn up on the day unless otherwise arranged. Always check the teams at the club in case a text message is not sent. The club has designed a new club jacket which will be great for the cooler months. The cost will be $110 each and you can view a photo at the office where you put your name down for games. There is a sheet there to place your orders along with the size you’re after as we need an idea by February 25 so the jackets are here before winter. They look unreal! Kerry Capern Day is Sunday March 4, details at the club. It will be Open Fours, with Bill and Lorelle Tumbridge once again sponsoring the day. A cost of $30 per player includes lunch, bowls and nibbles. Start putting your teams together now in what should be another fantastic day of bowls. 36

Dynamic young bowling duo By David Hayes The Glasshouse Country Bowls Club is really proud of Junior members Jack Chirgwin, 11, and Chloe Runge, 13, who competed in the Under 15 State Lawn Bowls Championships in Bundaberg over the school holidays. They each played some unbelievable bowls in both the Pairs and Singles against other junior players from all over the state. Their first game of Pairs they went down 16-8 against a tough team, coming back from being 6 nil down to lead 7-6, but couldn't pull off the win. In their second game, the duo were on fire, winning 36-3 against a team from Gayndah. Sadly they just missed out on getting into the finals. After a couple days break their Singles competition started. Jack played well, narrowly going down in his first game, but he came home strong to win his second one. At such a young age it’s only a matter of time before Jack makes the finals. He will only get better and learn from the experience – well done Jack! Chloe was able to win both her games on the first day with the second game going right down to the wire. She went straight through to the final but

was outplayed by her opponent from Tin Can Bay. Some positive news was to come, with Chloe not only winning the Singles Silver Medal but making the squad for the under 18 Queensland Team. It’s great to see two young Junior players enjoying their bowls. Bowls is a great game for people of all ages and I'm sure if you ask Chloe and Jack they will tell you they love the sport.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker The display for the Hinterland Australia Day Expo at the showgrounds was a success in a surprising way. Not only did we attract several new members but also won a marquee, the prize for the best display at the event. This was donated by Queensland Government Sport and Recreation Services. It was presented to our club by Nikki King on the day. Congratulations to all those who helped set up and run the display. Next year we’ll do it in style. On Saturday, on lawn 1, a large contingent of the newcomers impressed on Australia Day enjoyed an introduction to the game with Vince Carbery. There is rumoured to be some promising talent there. On lawn 2 Bev Sockhill, Garth Cottrell, Ted Gardner, and Wendy Whitby played an instructive game under the watchful eye, and ever encouraging presence of Sarah Widin. Bev gave her new kiwi mallet a tryout. This could explain why the boys beat the girls 8-3. Ted scored six hoops after an absence of two months from the courts. Clearly absence achieves more than make the heart grow fonder!

In Hobart, Tasmania, Ken Barker was soundly beaten in a tournament which involved nine holes of golf on the Claremont course – carding an impressive 77 strokes, while being held to a 10 all draw in a 14 point game with no lifts at New Town club. Thanks very much to Lizzie Bassett and Leigh Herington of New Town club. Lizzie for organizing it, and Leigh who made the club lawns and mallets available to us and also coached Michael Lester and Michael Chan into a friendly and competitive game even though they had no, and little, previous experience respectively. There was no play this Thursday because of the welcome rain. The lawns are looking a treat. We’ll probably lower the cut in a week or so. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 2 for 2.30pm. Contributed by Miles Allen Wednesday night was Round 1 of our Social Bowls competition and we had 14 teams all keen to make a good start. We welcomed several new players, some older ones and two new teams. Most of the games finished with close scores which is promising for the remaining 12 weeks. However, we know that Wednesday night bowls is primarily about social interaction and the enjoyment of mixing with a wide variety of people in a convivial atmosphere. We can take more players so if you’re interested, turn up at 6pm on Wednesday night to find out more. The winning teams were Sunstone, Bridge Club, Mavericks, Handles, Crackerjacks, Mobile Kingdom and the Mighty 10s. New teams to watch out for are Maleny Dairies led by Harold Hopper and the Young Ones with skipper Sandra Kapetanic. Jimmy Davidson had another good night winning both money boards. Scroungers on Friday was cancelled due to the rain but there were plenty of members for the weekly draw. Unfortunately none of them won the sponsors’ prizes – next week maybe.
