ell, as our countdown to Christmas continues, we know that as the school kids start their Christmas holidays, now is the time for the discussion to turn towards Santa (or Santa’s helpers as Santa is obviously busy at the North Pole) and more importantly, Santa photos to start making an appearance. So when we popped along to the Beerwah CWA’s Twilight Market on Saturday afternoon we couldn’t resist taking some photos of local kids enjoying the chance to have a chat with Santa. Fortunately for us these youngsters were way past the age when Santa is a scary stranger in a big red suit who turns them into a blubbering mess – that definitely wouldn’t have hit the right festive mark for the front cover! If your kids haven’t had a chance to talk to Santa yet, you will find him in his Grotto on Maple Street, Maleny on Friday Night for the Christmas Festival (see the ad on page 29 for more details) and on Saturday, he will be at the Beerwah Marketplace. The journey continues for the Maleny Credit Union (MCU) to make the transition from their current business of a ‘microbank’ and join the Alliance Bank model with Bendigo and four former Credit Unions. As part of this process, a vote was required at the AGM last Wednesday night, and as the time rolled around to start the meeting, things were looking ominous … not from the crowd but the impending weather. As the meeting was declared open and the thunder and lightning cracked outside, the lights of the Maleny Community Centre flickered on and off a couple of times, however the meeting proceeded without further inconvenience. CEO Bob Malcolm reported on the past year's financials, and he explained that the past year had seen the most positive growth in the last five years, at 9.10%. One of the sticking points for some of those in attendance seemed to be whether or not the vote on the night was a vote in favour of forming an alliance with Bendigo Bank. With much reassurance from the Board of Directors given to those in attendance, the members were satisfied that the vote on the night was just in relation to a change of the organisation’s constitution to make it easier for the Board to remove some of the limitations and reduce the costs required to introduce business improvements in the future. Making the change to the constitution required a two pronged approach; initially an on-line / postal
vote was required, followed by the vote at the AGM. For the on-line / postal vote to be successful MCU required 25% of the members to participate in the vote and 75% of those votes to support the change. This vote closed on Monday, November 28 at 5.00pm and saw 31.66% of members vote with 95.04% saying yes and 4.96% saying no to the constitutional changes. At the AGM, legal counsel Mark Swivell and Chair Sarah Davies answer everyone’s questions relating to the evening’s votes, as well as a broad range of other concerns, and after 90 minutes the vote was put to the crowd with unanimous support for the change to the constitution. The next stage in this process will be a Special General Meeting which will be held at the end of March 2017.

Time to get serious about rail upgrade
Harvesting closure near Beerwah Cemetery
RACQ has called on the State Government to review its Beerburrum to Nambour rail line upgrade plan to give Sunshine Coast residents the rail infrastructure they deserve. The Queensland Government continued to prepare a business case for the rail line upgrade which would feature the duplication of the southern section (Beerburrum to Landsborough), however the need to duplicate the northern section (Landsborough to Nambour) has been ignored. RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith said the Government’s current plan for the northern section was a band-aid solution, and the duplication of the entire line was essential to address transport issues surrounding the busy corridor. “To make this project worthwhile the entire line from Beerburrum to Nambour needs to be duplicated – not just the southern section which is currently proposed,” Ms Smith said. "The present plan to make only minor improvements to the northern existing section of line isn’t enough and if it goes ahead it’ll be a waste of taxpayer dollars. “If done correctly, the rail line upgrade will provide additional services for commuters to Brisbane and take freight trucks off the road and over to rail, reducing Bruce Highway congestion. It’ll also improve public transport options on the Coast – something locals are crying out for,” she said. Local residents have expressed concerns regarding the scant information provided to them at the official Queensland Rail community consultation sessions about the upgrade plans.

HQPlantations will commence harvesting plantation pine trees on both sides of Roys Road near Beerwah in February, 2017. From February 1, these plantation compartments will be closed to public access for approximately two years to enable the safe completion of harvesting, site preparation and replanting. Access barriers will be erected, video surveillance will be installed and regular security patrols will be performed to ensure the work site remains safe during the closure. Access to the Beerwah Cemetery will not be impacted during this period, however, visitors are advised to be alert for heavy machinery and logging trucks operating in the area. Licensed drivers with registered vehicles will be able to access formed roads in this section of State Forest when the operations are complete and the area has been reopened.
In response, local State Members Mark McArdle and Andrew Powell have organised a public meeting for locals to raise their concerns. The meeting is to be held at the Landsborough Hall (Old Landsborough Road) on Tuesday, December 13 from 12.00noon to 2.00pm. “What we do know is there is the possibility of the Caloundra Street level crossing in Landsborough being closed with impacts on businesses in Landsborough and loss of value to land holders,” Mr McArdle said. “Many people are contacting my office saying they’ve spoken to project officers who have said nothing will happen but then some residents are receiving property resumption notices. “We are encouraging anyone who would like to express their views on the project to attend our meeting and provide direct feedback which we will then take to the State Government.”

Local Peachester resident, Brian Stuart-Nairne, along with his neighbour Trevor, have recently returned home after a once in a lifetime 6000 kilometre aerial roundtrip adventure throughout outback Australia. Both Brian and Trevor have been flying for years, and readers may recognise Brian from his dental prosthetist work at Beerwah Denture Clinic. Brian’s father was a pilot and encouraged the flying bug in his son from a young age. Both pilots took additional friends or family members along to enjoy the 13 day adventure that witnessed some of the most amazing parts of Australia. Brian travelled with his friends John Moffat and Allan Clarke, and Trevor travelled with his son Liam and friend Marik. “You see the most amazing things that you wouldn’t see any other way if you were travelling by car or commercial aircraft. It was quite extraordinary!” said Brian. The group left from Caloundra airport on September
17, with the entire round trip taking just under two weeks. Flying at an altitude of approximately 5,000 feet, the journey consisted of up to four and half hours of flying at a time – before stopping each day at a different motel along the way. Stops along the way included Charleville, Birdsville, Lake Eyre, William Creek, Oodnadatta, Uluru / Ayers Rock, Kings Canyon, Yuendumu, Balgo Hill, Wolfe Creek Crater, Halls Creek, Derby and Cape Leveque. At beautiful Cape Leveque in Western Australia, the group stayed for four days before flying back east to Mitchell Falls, Tindall Airbase, El Questro Station, Borroloola, Winton, Longreach, Capella and finally back to Caloundra. “It was a magnificent trip and for many it would be a once in a lifetime experience. It really was a pretty amazing thing to do,” said Brian. While Brian keeps his technical skills up by flying every fortnight, needless to say he and his friends are already planning their next trip!

$100k Golf Course expansion grant Maleny Golf Club has successfully applied for a $100,000 Queensland Government ‘Getting Places and Spaces’ grant under its 2016-17 ‘Get in the Game’ funding program designed to support sport and recreation at the grass roots level. News of the club’s successful grant application follows the Sunshine Coast Council’s decision in late July to approve the lease of additional land for construction of Stage 2 of the Council’s 18hole community golf course. President Dr Max Whitten thanked the Queensland Government for its financial support of golf in Maleny as well as members of the grant application team led by the club’s Secretary Roly Nieper. “These funds will be used to help finance development of an additional three golf holes to expand the present 9-hole golf course to 12 holes,” Dr Whitten said. "The addition of these holes will significantly improve the playing experience for all, thereby enhancing the Maleny Golf Club’s ability to grow its membership at all levels and attract visiting golfers to play this high quality and awardwinning course.” Dr Whitten said the Maleny Golf Club had already established a first class performance track record as Stage 1 of the golf course was completed on time and well under budget for $750,000. “Significantly, the golf club has a skilled volunteer workforce in place, led by our awardwinning Superintendent Mick McCombe and can move quickly to get work underway as soon as these funds are available,” he said.

Forever Young Charity Bowls Event Contributed by Chris Freshwater The annual event was held on Saturday, November 12 at Club Glass House, raising funds for the Cancer Council. We didn’t allow the thunder storm to spoil the fun night, enjoying yet again another great turn out. This year we raised $5,107.25. Prior to counting the amount raised, I wondered if there was enough to maybe push us over the $20,000 mark for a grand total over the past four years. Incredibly there was! A total of $21,600.65 has been raised over the last four events.
Awesome! This would not have happened without the generosity of lots of individuals and businesses both in our local communities and also outside our area. A huge thank you to everyone that continuingly supports this event! Thank you to my main helpers Amanda Johnston and Lorraine McNamara and to all that helped on the night. Meters turned off for shoppers in Caloundra CBD over Christmas Shoppers will be able to take advantage of meter free parking in the Caloundra CBD during the Christmas-New Year period. At its Ordinary Meeting last week, council endorsed the parking meter fee amnesty in the Caloundra CBD area for six weeks starting on Saturday, December 10. Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer initially proposed the amnesty, which was then supported by a letter of request from Caloundra Chamber of Commerce. Cr Dwyer said council had identified the ongoing benefit of implementing an amnesty over this busy retail period. “Council has been working closely with the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce and traders this year as we progress the upgrade of Bulcock Street,” Cr Dwyer said. “With the major construction work due for completion in early December, it will be a great time for shoppers to head in to town and support local businesses, while enjoying meter free parking and the new-look Bulcock Street.” The parking meters will be turned off, however motorists must be mindful that the two-hour time limit will still apply in order to support customer turnover for local businesses in the area. Over the six-week period, council officers will continue to monitor general parking regulation throughout the area, and any parking infringements will attract a penalty infringement notice.
The paid parking amnesty will conclude at midnight on Sunday, January 29, 2016. Operating surplus from the meters is used for projects, facilities and other services for the Bulcock Street precinct.

As we draw Maleny Commerce’s work to a close for 2016 it is great to take a look back at all that we have achieved this year. Our volunteer Management Committee and Partners undertook the following in 2016: • We organised 10 x networking events with a great range of speakers and supporting our local cafes and restaurants • We participated in the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Building Renewal Community Design Advisory Panel process • We produced and distributed the Maleny Tourist Map • We coordinated and funded the Maleny Show Society window dressing competition on behalf of the Maleny Show Society • In conjunction with the Maleny and District Credit Union we developed and ran the inaugural Hinterland Finance and Sustainability Expo • We funded the remuneration of musicians at the 2016 Maleny Wood Expo • We negotiated a joint membership option for both Maleny Commerce and the Maleny Voluntary Information Centre commencing in 2017 • We provided funding for the Maleny Volunteer and Information Centre 2016 Christmas Party • We produced a monthly Maleny Commerce e-Newsletter • In conjunction with MLA Andrew Powell’s office and the Montville, Glasshouse and Caboolture Chambers of Commerce we assisted with the inaugural Glassy Small Business Awards, celebrating small businesses in the Hinterland • We represented our business community’s interests to Sunshine Coast Council, Queensland Government, Department of Transport and Main roads, Energex, Telstra, NBN, etc... • We provided many support letters to local community groups for funding applications • We provided opportunities for local businesses to share their business stories and journeys
• We promoted and supported many community events such as Sculpture on the Edge, Aussie Day, Lions Welcome Dinner and the Maleny Wood Expo • We were successful in our application for Sunshine Coast Council ongoing grant funding for an Admin Officer for Maleny Commerce. Thank you, Sunshine Coast Council • We initiated and participated in a review of Public and Commercial Parking in the Maleny Commercial footprint with Sunshine Coast Council • We initiated and facilitated an information session between tourism operators, interested parties and representatives of the Cruise Ship industry to the Sunshine Coast • And last but not least, we co-ordinate the Maleny Christmas Carnival. Landsborough locals invited to comment on off-leash location Following community requests for a dog off-leash area in Landsborough, Sunshine Coast Council is seeking feedback on a proposed location southwest of Pioneer Park along Caloundra Street. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski encouraged the community to have their say on the proposal. “Landsborough continues to develop as a great country town with a proud sense of history and a lifestyle that is pretty special. Its recreation areas are an important part of this,” Cr Baberowski said. “Council has responded to community requests for this off-leash area, as we understand what an important part dogs can play in a family or as companions. “I look forward to hearing what residents think about this proposed location.” The proposed dog off-leash area would be suitable for dogs of various sizes and would include: a 1.2m high fence with black PVC coated chain wire and secure self-closing access gates, shelter and seating areas, water tap with dog bowl, concrete access paths and signage, a dog bag dispenser and rubbish bin and off-street car parking (part of a long term plan). Council undertook a detailed site investigation to identify potential locations and determined the Caloundra Street location to be the most suitable, due to its location and existing infrastructure. This wonderful 100-year old accordion was left at the Landsborough Museum’s doorstep last month. It was accompanied by a small note that explained it was a donation and some information about concert pitches of accordions. Youth exchange excitement
Lachlan White from Maleny is off to New Zealand as a recipient of a partfunded Lions Youth Exchange trip. He will be hosted by families in Upper Hutt and Palmerston North as well as attending an International Youth Camp in Rotorua for 10 days, and be away 10-27 December. The Youth Camp at the Okataina Outdoor Education and Recreation Centre will be the venue for 40 youth aged between 16 and 22 years with an equal ratio of New Zealand and International participants. Activities include hiking, swimming, water sports, camping, cultural and scenic tours, evening activities and a country of origin concert as a finale. Host families will show Lachlan around their own areas, taking in tourist attractions as well as giving him an appreciation of their locale. While still in Australia, he received his uniform and backpack from the Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club Youth Exchange Chair, Judy Brodie. Peachester Horticultural Society Contributed by Patricia Bradford A warm welcome was extended to all members to my garden for our final meeting of the year. A few of the members paid a visit to Tic's garden at Glass House Mountains recently for her open day and we all agreed that it was worth a visit. There were plenty of comments about the changes since the garden was last opened a couple of years ago. John Innes spoke about visiting a very good nursery further north at Coes Creek. Results of the competition bench for October were: a tie for 1st, Coral Beutel and Pam Innes, 15 points and 2nd Trish Bradford on 13 points. After the meeting the barbecue was fired up and members enjoyed our final meeting where we had a lovely relaxing time reminiscing over the past year, and the pleasant weather was a bonus. Our Christmas breakup will be held at the Pineapple Patch. Our first meeting for 2017 will be on Thursday, January 19 at the Peachester Hall from 9.30am. Visitors and new members are always welcome. Why you need to chill out and let your child fail Learning doesn't happen from failure itself but rather from analysing the failure, making a change, and then trying again. When children learn through trial and error they are exercising and developing their lateral and reflective thinking which is critical for building their problem solving skills. As one attempt fails to deliver the result the child is looking for, they will look for other possible ways to resolve the problem that they ordinarily would not have thought about. The brain is a pattern-seeking machine, and the pattern-detecting and pattern-making areas of the brain are critical to proper development. Every time a child learns something new, the brain rewires itself based on the child’s understanding. Every time the child repeats a task or a skill that particular neural pathway is reinforced and strengthened. Learning changes the brain because it can rewire itself with each new stimulation, experience, and behaviour. The more a neural pathway in a child’s brain is used, the stronger it becomes; conversely, if it is not used, the pathway can be lost. Children experience great satisfaction when they achieve their objective and solve the problem they have been experimenting with.
This encourages them to apply the same trial and error process to other problems in other areas. These skills become portable and can be applied across other situations in their play and life. Children are also developing their emerging autonomy, sense of agency and resilience (their ability to cope with the unexpected and persevere) when they learn by trial and error, taking considered risk in their decision-making and persisting even when they find a task difficult. Robert Irwin turns 13 Many locals have a soft spot in their heart for one of Beerwah’s famous residents – Robert Irwin – and last week they went along to Australia Zoo to be a part of the celebrations to mark the beginning of his teenage years, turning 13! As part of the celebrations, Robert was, of course, joined by his mum Terri and sister Bindi as he fed the zoo’s amazing saltwater crocodiles in the Crocoseum for the daily Wildlife Warriors show. Following Robert’s success as the runner-up for Australian Geographic’s Young Photographer of the Year competition earlier this year, his love for photography was on display with a showcase of 90 of his favourite wildlife images in a pop-up gallery in the Australiana Boutique.

Creative fun with a message
Contributed by Barry Smith (Artist) What do you get when you combine 120-plus primary school students, three local artists, an art teacher and a heap of art materials? You get fun and creative artworks, that’s what. “More fun than being on a roller-coaster” and “the best day ever at school”, according to a couple of students. On Monday, November 21, about 120 Ananda Marga River School students from Prep to Year 6 went to the school’s art shed to participate in three special RADF-funded art workshops offered by local Art4place artists, Barry Smith, Fiona Dempster and Christine Elcoate. The activities were focused around the theme of ‘water and the environment’. Each student cast fragments of coastal rubbish into two small containers of clear glass resin, to highlight the problem of water pollution. This rubbish was collected from the beach by the Year 6 class when they were on camp as part of their service project. Using gelli-plates they created colourful prints that reflected the impact of rubbish on water creatures. And they wrote weather-grams to make statements about the importance of protecting our waterways and why it is bad to throw rubbish into our ocean and rivers. The artwork created by the students was exhibited at the Arts and Ecology Centre, Maroochy Bushland Botanical Gardens, Tanawha as part of an environmental exhibition. The exhibition also included internationally famous Japanese environmental artist Shimokawa Sensei’s work as well as work by Sunshine Coast water and sound artist Dr Leah Barclay. The students’ resin, print and weather-gram artwork made a very strong environmental statement and a colourful contribution to the exhibition. The 120 rubbish and resin filled water glasses and 120 resin and rubbish filled plastic bags that were installed in the exhibition will now be on display in the Maleny Library for the month of December.

Tough as A common question for this time of year is “are these plants tough; can they survive the heat?” and luckily for many of the plants we stock the answer is yes! Take for example groundcovers. While lawns wither and turn brown during the lack of rain, many of our native groundcovers thrive and provided a great floral display, their foliage shading and cooling the soil. First up are our local Paper Daisies; South East Queensland is rich in daisy plants and besides the Paper Daisies, we have Sunray, Burr-Daisy, and Yellow Buttons. These are all tough, fast and full of flowers in no time at all. Our many local Goodenias also make very tough groundcovers that thrive naturally on mountain peaks and slopes. Pig Face is not only a tough yet lush looking succulent with large pink flowers, but as a bonus the fruit, when ripe, taste reminiscent of a salty plum. Fan Flowers add a splash of purple or pink and these glossy green plants speak for themselves in this weather. Besides all the flowering plants, many of our native grasses such as Lomandra, Poa, Kangaroo Grass and Bamboo Grass can also make for tough and interesting foliage contrasts. While lawns struggle and require regular watering to keep green, many of our native groundcovers not only survive but thrive. Enjoy!
Environment The science behind identifying ‘pest poo’
It is not the most glamorous of bodily samples to work with but researchers from the University of Canberra’s Institute for Applied Ecology have been funded through the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre to develop readily available and cheap techniques to identify ‘native vs introduced’ animal species, based on a poo sample. Dr Anna MacDonald and Professor Stephen Sarre recently published their research showing that environmental DNA (eDNA) detection is an analytical approach that can be applied to many ecological management decisions within Australia. “eDNA detection is becoming more common in wildlife studies, as it provides a means to study elusive animals without actually handling or observing them directly,” Dr MacDonald said. “We can also use DNA to study interactions between species, for example, by detecting the remains of a threatened species in scats from an introduced predator. We have very little chance of observing a feral cat eating an eastern barred bandicoot, but we can now detect this predator-prey interaction using DNA.” The study aims to offer a framework for developing and evaluating speciesspecific DNA tests with the goal of ensuring correct identification of the DNA within poo samples. “Australians are leading research in the application of DNA detection to managing and understanding the impacts of invasive species, but it is important that we, and others worldwide, develop and adopt appropriate standards that test and measure the reliability of our work,” Dr MacDonald said.

Our native bats are doing it tough right now. Reduced habitat and food shortages are taking their toll. These remarkable creatures are intelligent and highly social, with complex (and sometimes noisy) communication systems consisting of at least 30 different calls, used, for example, to locate offspring, establish hierarchies and warn of predators. There are two types of bat: insectivorous microbats, which rely on echolocation for navigation and food location; and megabats, which include flying foxes. The latter feed on fruit, nectar and flowers from more than a hundred species of trees and vines, including eucalypts, paperbarks and figs. Bats are the only mammals capable of sustained flight, have excellent night vision, an advanced sense of smell and amazing memories (needed to find food sources). But most importantly, they are crucial in keeping our native forests healthy. As they are highly mobile, they play an important role in dispersing seeds, with many tropical plants depending entirely on bats for their seed dispersal. They are effective forest pollinators; pollen sticks to their fur as they move from flower to flower, from tree to tree. This wide dispersal reinforces the gene pool and health of the forest. Insectivorous bats are important in the control of insect populations. South East Queensland has at least 30 species of bat, including three common species of flying fox: the Little Red, the Black, and the vulnerable Greyheaded Flying Fox. There are more than 22 flying fox camps on the Sunshine Coast, with numbers of animals varying with food availability. Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Opening up to music In this series of short articles I am proposing how we might consider new ways of approaching music in our life, and today I want to look at how open we are to the musical experience. Do we simply have music on as a background to whatever else we are doing or are we actually listening to it? And if we are listening (let’s say at a live concert) is it just because we are there with friends or are we really “taking in” the music? So to begin, let’s put aside the role of music as a background to other things we are doing and reflect on the sounds themselves. To do this it is probably easier if we are at home, alone or with a listening friend, or at a concert that people have attended mainly for the music. For many of us this is the first big step in opening ourselves to the musical experience, but an essential one to make! Now we are about to focus on the music we need to quieten the mind and its incessant chatter. This is a big challenge for all of us – it will constantly take us away from the listening experience. The secret is to not let that bother us, just bring our attention back to the music each time it wanders. So we are receptive to the music: we are hearing the different sounds each instrument makes – individually and as part of the ensemble and we are sensitive to the use of dynamics and fast and slow tempi in the music. Emotionally we are being taken up and down by the music as we listen – thrilling at the solo performance of featured instruments, and, if there are singers, responding to the quality of their voices and the lyrics of the song. Would we get still more from this experience if we acquired music skills? Of course we would. But rest assured, even for trained musicians the learning never stops – the best of them want more from their listening experience. They know they are still just scraping the surface and they too want to delve deeper. So there is one promise I can make you. The more you give to music the more it will reward you in return! Except to the thieves who stole our magnificent Emden Gander on Sunday night, November 20 returning again to steal the Muscovy Drake on Wednesday night, November 23. These animals are not for eating but breeding stock, and fenced in what we considered a secure environment. The gander, with his cobalt blue eyes, could spot an aircraft as just a dot in the sky, so protective was he of his partner and progeny. The drake was hand reared from a duckling and extremely trusting of humans (those that he knew). As an old man I am at a loss trying to understand the mentality of the culprits. Was Woolies closed? These beautiful specimens deserved a better fate and brought a great deal of joy to their countless admirers, children and caring adults alike. If your family on Christmas day ask where the goose and duck came from, if you are a big enough person tell them the truth. Paull and Tony Beerwah
Look at the big picture
Mr Giles (GC&M News, November 30) misinterprets my statements about retired scientists. It's not that retired scientist "no longer have knowledge" about their subjects, but that they are often out of touch with the latest research. It's not "ageist" to state that, it's simply the truth. It's no coincidence that the few climate scientists who oppose the theory of human-induced global warming are largely retired scientists. They make up the 3% in opposition to the 97% of currently active climate scientist in consensus over the issue. This example is instructive. Mr Giles, who styles himself on the web as a "geomancer" (someone who divines the future by throwing stones on the ground and reading them), would perhaps not know this, although he does seem to be an expert on imagined slights. Giles goes on to list the problems with the NBN. What he conveniently omits to mention is that these problems are utterly minuscule in the big picture: the 13,406 complaints (mostly about connection delays and missed appointments) about the NBN, versus the total of over a million connected premises, gives a complaint

rate of 0.001%! That's a fantastic result and a big recommendation for the NBN. See the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman’s annual report for details. In his jihad against the NBN, Giles seems to ignore the interests of home owners in the Hinterland. A fast broadband connection is one of the key purchasing decisions for homebuyers, according to new research. The NBN Ready Homes report reveals that 80% of Aussie house hunters rate a good broadband service as a major factor in their decision making process. Home owners in the Hinterland risk having lower resale values if they pursue a militantly anti-NBN line and prevent us getting this vital infrastructure. In another letter, Sel Hopley (GC&M News, November 30) argues that because the process of peer review has flaws, it should be discarded. Unfortunately it is the best process we have, flawed as it is, but it would be folly in the extreme to advocate, as Hopley does, that we turn instead to self-publication on the internet as the alternative. It is not often you see a letter thanking a tradie for a great job. I would just like to acknowledge a local tradie who came to the rescue this week. With the heat it has been unbearable and we needed an air conditioning unit installed as soon as possible, as I suffer from asthma and the extreme heat brings it on. Alan Marr from Marr's Electrical, who lives in Mooloolah, basically juggled his work around and came extremely early in the morning, which was great for me, to get the job done. Smoke and mirrors
I say no to the plastic bag ban from 2018 and from experience where this system is in place in Australia, I would like people to consider the following: Large supermarkets make a profit on selling plastic bags at 15 cents each. These bags never break down because they are designed to be reused many times. Their handles are large enough to snare marine life, birds and small animals. Busy shoppers forget to take bags into shops, buy them because they need them, accumulate them and then use them to recycle rubbish into landfill, as they do now with bags currently supplied. The plastic bags currently supplied free by supermarkets and shops do break down in landfill, waterways and if they are dumped in the environment. You have to ask yourself which is the lesser environmental evil – biodegradable bags or bags purchased at supermarkets and shops that will never break down? Barb Pearson Landsborough

The sights and sounds of Christmas await visitors at the annual Christmas Tree Festival to be held at the Maleny Uniting Church in the week before Christmas. It will be worth a visit for everyone to come and view the amazing display of trees decorated in this year’s theme of ‘Christmas around the World’. Some will be thought provoking, even sombre, while others will catch your eye for their humour and colorful creativity. This year we have a record number of trees submitted by a wide range of community groups. One tree of note will be the tree created by the Ladies Friendship Group. It is a stark, dry tree, lacking in colorful decorations, surrounded by burnt out, ashcovered logs. Not your typical tree. But it reflects the fact that in many parts of the world – war torn, drought and disaster stricken, a brightly decorated tree is not on the Christmas agenda. Come along and see for yourself how this group has interpreted the theme, and catch a glimpse as well of the many trees that will be highly decorated and colourful. Children will be well catered for: the trees will captivate them, plus there are going to be plenty of hands-on activities including the Kids’ Play Zone – depicting Bethlehem 2000 years ago. Visitors will be invited to make a gold coin donation to the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary. The money raised will be used by the Auxiliary to provide much needed extra resources for the Hospital. with Judi Coey Optometry Sixty percent of all eye injuries happen at work making it imperative for employers and employees to reduce the risk of eye accidents. Optometrist Judi Coey worked in the coal mining towns west of Mackay before safety glasses were compulsory. She saw many eye injuries which could have been prevented had the appropriate eyewear been used. Judi says eye safety is also important at home. Many DIY projects or home maintenance projects require eye protection. Some common causes of eye injuries are: impact, dust, chemicals, heat, visible radiation and ultraviolet radiation. Always wear safety glasses or goggles when chopping or splitting wood, trimming, sawing, using a hammer or whipper snipper. Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council Landsborough dog off-leash Landsborough continues to develop as a great country town with a proud sense of history and a lifestyle that is pretty special. Its recreation areas are an important part of this, so council has responded to community requests for a dog off-leash area, as we understand what an important part dogs can play in a family or as companions. The proposed dog off-leash area is located south-west of Pioneer Park along Caloundra Street, Landsborough and would be suitable for dogs of various sizes. I encourage the community to provide their feedback via an online survey on council’s website or email feedback to parkscapitalworks@sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au by December 23.
Pioneer Park replacement fence update
As many of you would be aware, a few weeks ago 24 fence panels, a pedestrian gate and double maintenance gate were shockingly stolen from the All Abilities Playground Park at Pioneer Park, Landsborough. This equipment was custom made with a heavy duty design and will take some time to replace. Council staff have erected a barrier mesh fence in the interim, whilst preparing to replace the fence panels and gates. At this stage, with the busy Christmas period upon us, it is difficult to estimate an installation timeframe, however I am hoping to have the replacement fences installed by February, 2017. As always, I appreciate your patience and I would like to thank the many social media users who shared my Facebook post to reach out to any witnesses. 32,751 people saw the Facebook post, with 293 shares.
Hinterland holiday events
Head along to the Glasshouse Country Community Carols on Saturday, December 17 at the Beerwah Sportsground. Pre-show entertainment starts from 4.30pm with the stage production from 6.30pm. There will be food stalls, coffee, a jumping castle, face painting, and nativity scenes, with candles and glow sticks available for purchase. Join in on all the festive fun by singing along to your favourite carols and finish the night off with a spectacular fireworks display – a fantastic family affair!

Council is seeking to start construction in early 2017 pending Queensland Transport and Main Roads approval.

Mark McArdle State Member for Caloundra You’re invited – December 13 Public Meeting Landsborough Hall In recent weeks I have been contacted by a number of Hinterland residents and businesses regarding the State Government’s proposed Landsborough Rail Overpass Project. This is a project that will have a major impact on the Landsborough and Glass House communities, and residents have expressed serious concerns about how little information has been provided to them directly or at consultation sessions. Many people are contacting my office with word from project officers that nothing will happen soon, while others have received property resumption notices. What we do know is that there is the possibility of the Caloundra Street level crossing in Landsborough being closed with impacts on businesses in Landsborough and loss of value to land holders. Hinterland property owners and businesses are feeling overlooked and ill-informed as they consider how they will survive many of these proposed changes. My colleague, Member for Glass House Andrew Powell and I will be hosting a public forum to give residents the chance to have their views heard and all direct feedback will be taken to the State Government. This is a meeting for everyone. At this stage the State Government has received feedback from 130 residents at their community information sessions. It is important I get feedback from the more than 8,000 people that live within Landsborough and Glass House and in between. All shifts are two hours and people are welcome to stay or leave to continue their day. Reverend Scott Kroeger - Maleny Presbyterian Church What transforms culture? Is culture something that is fluid and changing as determined by the 51% majority in any one location? Should prevailing culture have full sway over the rights and privileges of the remaining 49% of any culture? These are questions people ask in our world today. Depending on who you listen to, you’ll get some interesting feedback. Social secularists will often seek to go with the fads and fashions of the day and decry any allegiance to time honoured beliefs and traditions … some of which are deservedly so. That said, many are those who see great value in keeping alive ancient beliefs, traditions that have guided and built much of the modern world today. Each Christmas season we see a continuing push against the original point and purpose of this annual celebration of the birth of the Christ Child. Secularists are bent on removing the last vestiges of it from plans and events that are typical of season. We have an increased focus on hedonistic and materialistic activities. The sacred is mixed with the secular and even overshadowed to the point where children grow up having no idea that Christmas is about the
birth of a Saviour. We now live in a post-Christian world where the influence of the local Church is waning. And yet this fact will never alter the final triumph of the Messiah. Jesus always meant to be the one who would not only alter the hearts and minds of all those who would believe and put their faith in his finished work at the cross, but to also have his Word and Kingdom break over the top of every culture and transform it. It is Jesus who gives meaning to everyone and everything in every culture. To think differently is just chasing the wind. If you would truly seek to find meaning in your life and transform you and your culture … then look to the only source of Truth, the Christ. Celebrate the coming of the one who can truly save you and give meaning to your life this Christmas as you worship the Christ Child wholeheartedly.

With the festive season officially underway, thoughts are now turning towards catering for family and friends. Christmas time – especially in Queensland – is often marked by the abundance of fresh and flavoursome seafood which is proving an increasingly popular dining option at this time of year. For this month I thought I’d chat to the owners of C&M Seafoods, Cheryl and Murray, about what customers can look forward to when considering their festive season menus. Cheryl and Murray have over 30 years’ industry experience and they certainly know what customers like in this seasonal produce which is becoming a firm favourite on the Christmas Menu. At the moment in the lead up to Christmas they are down at the docks at Mooloolaba unloading directly from the local trawlers twice a week. Coming off the boats are locally sourced products including cooked king prawns, sand crabs and long tail bugs. Wild cooked prawns are cooked at sea which means that customers can enjoy a more natural flavour.
Over the Christmas period, C&M Seafoods are extremely busy with their speciality seafood products. Customers can design their own platters which can be tailor-made to suit any size gathering and any budget. No platter is too big or small to be made up and pensioner friendly platters can be created to order to suit specific
budgets – so no one needs to miss out celebrating in style with seafood. Platters can include medium or large cooked local prawns, bugs, and different crab varieties such as sand, coral or red spot which are all locally sourced. Pacific Oysters are also available which are sourced from either Tasmania or Coffin Bay in South Australia. Over the Christmas period, the majority of oysters are shucked (opened) on site to guarantee quality and freshness. Beautiful large green prawns for barbecues and skewers are also available now as well as all the regular fish and chips options the shop is renowned for. Christmas orders are being taken now for seafood platters which can be picked up from the shop on Christmas eve. Community barbecue
The Glass House Neighbourhood Centre hosted a great community barbecue last Friday evening, with the stars of the night being the young performers who are part of the theatre group who hold their classes at the centre. They did a wonderful job for their first official performance and their enthusiasm for being on stage performing in the park was pretty clear. Another highlight was having the Rural Firies on hand to show off their trucks for the big and small kids, as well as talking to the grown-ups about bush fire preparedness.

Opera by the Lagoon
The Sunshine Coast Choral Society will present its annual concert of Christmas music on Sunday, December 11, at St Mark’s Anglican Church, Buderim. Music Director Adrian King has put together a program of traditional carols, new carols, Christmas hymns and Christmas music on the theme of ‘A Christmas Journey’. The soloist for the concert is well-known Ipswichbased vocalist, choral conductor and arts administrator Thomas Keenan. He is the Musical Director of the highly successful Ipswich Orpheus Chorale. Thomas has performed a number of stage roles including ‘the Major General’ in ‘The Pirates of Penzance’, ‘Pooh-Bah’ in ‘The Mikado’ and ‘King Arthur’ in ‘Spamelot’. The audience will be invited to join in some of the singing and to join the singers for light refreshments at the end of the concert. Tickets available at the door one hour before the concert. Since the ‘Glasshouse Country Pay it Forward Group’ was established earlier this year they have been working tirelessly to help others in the local area. To help raise funds for Christmas Hampers for locals in need, Craig and Lani Mercer are hosting a special fundraising event titled ‘Opera by the Lagoon’ on Saturday, December 17 from 5.00pm. The evening will feature the classically trained artist Louise Winton singing Christmas favourites, classical and light opera pieces. Hoo8Hoo live at Hotel Maleny Hoo8Hoo is a duet of Tim Aitken and his younger brother Sam. They are a talented duo with great vocals and amazing harmonies. Jobs for the yard in December
• If you haven’t done it yet, prune your azaleas to keep them nice and compact, and give them a feed with azalea fertiliser. Spray them with a systemic insecticide to protect the leaves from the dreaded azalea lacebug. • The wet humid weather is heaven for vegetable caterpillars and grasshoppers. They can strip leafy green veggies over-night. Hand remove or spray with a natural spray (such as Dipel) every couple of days. Remember that water washes off any sprays – so repeat after rain or overhead irrigation. • Watch out for fruit fly in your tomatoes. You can protect your tomatoes by using an insect exclusion bag (I use a paper lunch bag) or by a chemical spray designed for the job. You can use a baited trap – but most only capture the male flies, and so are best used as an indicator of fruit fly activity. A better product is Eco-Naturelure which attracts both the male and female fruit flies, and contains a natural insecticide to kill them. My advice is not to spray it onto the plants you want to protect, as it will attract the fruit flies to them before killing them. I’d suggest spraying a nearby fence or other structures nearby to lure the flies away from your precious fruits. • Fertilise your bananas and cut out any suckers you don’t want. For each mature plant, you should have one sapling and one sucker. Regularly remove yellowing leaves to keep the clump tidy. • Paw paw trees which have grown too tall can be cut back now. Cut the stem to 1m off the ground and cover the cut top with a large can. • Prune back your grevilleas by a third and feed them with a low phosphorus fertiliser. This simulates being burnt back in a bushfire, and stimulates them to grow more branches – more branches means more flowers. • Don’t forget to slip-slop-slap when you go out in the garden, even if it is for a short period. Try to do most of the work in the mornings or the afternoons, so that you miss the heat of the day. Take a water bottle with you too – keeping well hydrated is just as important. • Tidy up the garden for Santa – he doesn’t think too highly of a messy garden. Vegetables Plant tomato, capsicum, snake bean, okra, eggplant, sweet corn, lettuce (leafy varieties), radish, sweet potato, cucumber, zucchini, choko, pumpkin, rockmelon, watermelon and rosella. Flowers Plant cosmos, marigold, salvia, zinnia, begonia, celosia, gomphrena, sunflower, torenia, ageratum, aster, impatiens and coleus.

Illawarra Flame Tree
Brachychiton acerifolius The Illawarra Flame Tree or Flame Tree is a large tree that is native to the subtropical parts of the east coast of Australia. However, this tree is very tolerant of temperate climates and is grown widely as a garden and specimen tree around the world. The Flame Tree can reach heights of up to 40 metres but often will only grow to around 20 metres when grown in garden situations. The Flame Tree is easy to spot in the wild when it is flowering, usually late spring, early summer. This is because it is deciduous and the vibrant red flowers cover the plant when its branches are leafless. Mature trees can be seen in the forest from kilometres away when they are in full bloom. The scarlet flowers are relatively small and bell shaped but what they lack in size they make up for in quantity. The flowers are followed by tough brown seed pods with hairy yellow seeds inside. Aboriginal people would use the inner bark of the Flame Tree to make fishing line. In ideal conditions the Flame Tree is spectacular in all its glory. Once you have seen the magnificent scarlet laden trees standing out of the green forest-covered ranges in full flower you will never forget it.

Mark Vaney was recognised for his contribution to the club over a 20 year period and was awarded Life Membership. Mark has been around the club for 23 years and captain of the Monday night fixture team for 20 years, President for two years, and Club captain for many years organising our Thursday night social tennis. We wish to thank Mark for his support of the club during this time. Well done Mark and we hope that you will be around the club for some time to come. Our AGM was held on November 27 and we welcome our new Treasurer Katie to the committee. Our previous Treasurer, Candace Dell, has been on the Committee for eight years and has done an excellent job. We played in teams of four players. Well, we had some very interesting and innovative costumes. Winners of the best costumes were the ‘Sunflowers’. They looked great and there was a lot of work went into them. (See the photos in next week's edition). Golf on the day was 9 hole Stableford with only the best score of the four on each hole. The winners for the Spring Season of Business bowls were the team from Twin Cedars who beat ‘We are only here for the Snags’ in a tie break end. Everybody had a great eight weeks. The summer series will start Wednesday, February 15. Speak to Bill Tumbridge if you are interested. On Saturday the club had their annual presentation and Christmas luncheon. Over 40 members and their partners turned up which was great. Lunch was beautiful and by all reports everyone had a wonderful afternoon. Ron Wilson took out the lucky draw donated by Allan Pashby. A list is up in our office with the winners and runner ups for all certified and club championships in 2016. Congrats to everyone. The Police Bowlers had their Christmas break up on Sunday. Over 40 bowlers including members from our club turned out for a game of bowls followed by lunch. Police Bowls will be back at Glasshouse again next year. Wednesday, December 14: all members are welcome to our Annual Christmas Party. For $20.00 you will get a game of bowls and a two-course lunch. Lessons for Beginners to Advanced
AFL Auskick and Rookie Search The AFL has been running a 'Rookie Search' at the Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Club on Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough. The program runs on Wednesday afternoons at 4.00pm on the small oval at the sports facility. It is open to all boys and girls from Prep to Year 6 to come on down and learn or improve their AFL skills. This Wednesday there will be a barbecue after the session. The Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Club will be running the NAB AFL Auskick in the first term of 2017. This is a key introductory program for primary school aged children and their families. The club is planning to enter a team in the Under 6 competition to provide a pathway for the Auskickers to take their game to the next level in 2017! Sunshine Coast Auskick Co-ordinator Rohan Briggs said that Auskick is all about teaching boys and girls the skills of AFL in a friendly, safe environment and, most importantly, having fun while beginning their AFL experience. The Beerwah State School 2016 Swimming Carnival was held at Beerwah Pool on Monday, November 28. All students aged 8 and above competed in individual events in either First, Second or Third Divisions. There was great team spirit shown by all competitors and, in overall combined results, Bluegum were the house winners, with Mellum second, Coochin third, and Stanley fourth. Age Champions in each age group were: 8 years Dalton and Millie; 9 years Trae and Emilia; 10 years Zach and Indiah; 11 years Tyson, Kayleb and Poppy; 12 years Callum and Mackenzie. Congratulations to all swimmers, teachers and parents who helped out on the day. A special mention to PE teacher Mrs Traynor for coordinating the smooth running of the carnival. Age Champions and selected swimmers look forward to representing Beerwah Primary School at the District Carnival to be held early next year.

Contributed by Ian Hansen Monday, November 28: the Monthly Jackpot Pairs Winners were the Kilcoy Team of Trudi Pratt and Lester Bechley with two wins +22. The Runners-up were another visiting team in Terry Strijland and Jeff Jordan with +14 in the second game. The Jackpot wasn’t won but locals took the Raffle Prizes with Warwick Moody winning first prize and Faye Petersen both second and third prize. This was the last Monthly Jackpot Pairs for 2016 as the December date would be Boxing Day, so the next Monthly Jackpot Pairs is on Monday, January 23, 2017. Tuesday, November 29: winners with two wins +24 were Miles Allen and Warwick Moody. The Jackpot wasn’t won when negative 22 was drawn from the barrel. Wednesday evening’s scheduled Twilight Challenge Finals became somewhat of a fiasco with the threatening stormy weather. It was doubtful if it would be possible to play for a start, www.gcnews.com.au
then all teams didn’t turn up, so the bowls just became a social event. The Finals will now be played this week and hopefully the weather will be kinder than last week. Friday, because of the Christmas Break-up and Presentation Night, Scroungers weren’t played and no draw was done for the Sponsors’ Prizes. The dinner was well patronised and enjoyed by all present. Apparently the highlight of the evening was Tony Yorkston’s impersonation of Chad Morgan. The 2016 Championship Winners were: Men’s Singles - Curley Petersen, Ladies Singles Margaret Ginns, Men’s Pairs - Jim King and Don Ginns, Ladies Pairs - Lucy Oldfield and Margaret Ginns, Men’s Triples - John Lewis, Miles Allen and Warwick Moody and the Mixed Pairs - Lucy and Ray Oldfield. After the lead had changed several times, Vince won with the maximum score of 26 to Nick’s 22. Last Thursday Kath Smith, Donna Manning and Frances Harper set out on a rare 6-ball game, but the storms rolled in before any meaningful scores were made, and the game was abandoned. Fruit Cake Recipe – guaranteed to put you in the holiday spirit You'll need the following: four large eggs, two cups of dried fruit, a teaspoon of baking soda, a teaspoon of salt, a cup of brown sugar, lemon juice, nuts, and a bottle or two of rum. Before you start, sample the rum to check for quality. If it's good, let's get started. Take a large bowl, and a measuring cup. Check the rum again. To be sure it is the highest quality, pour a cup and drink it as fast as you can. Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer; beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add one seapoon of thugar, and beat again. Meanwhile, make sure the rum has retained its fine quality. Cry another tup. Open a second quart if necessary.
Turn off the mixer. Break two arge leggs, and add to the bowl, and chuck in the cup of fried druit. Mix on the turner, and beat till high. If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers, just pry it loose with a drewscriver. Sample the rum to check for tonsisticity. Next, sift two cups of pepper or salt. Or something. Who cares? Check the rum. Now sift the lemon juice, and strain the nuts. Fold in some chopped butter. Add one table. Spoon. Of brown thugar or whatever colour you can find. Grease the oven. Turn the cake tin to 350 gredees. Don't for get to beat off the turner. Now pour the whole mess into the coven and ake. Feed to your goat. Check the rum again, and bo to ged. DENTAL EXCEL - caring for the Hinterland community for over 19 yrs Dr Tiffany Chan Dr. Tiffany Chan was born in Hong Kong and moved to the UK with her family when she was 13. She continued to study in the UK and qualified as a dentist at the University of Liverpool in 2010. Upon graduating, she went on to work in the Community Dental Service through the National Health Service where she treated many patients with dental phobia, children and special needs patients. This experience enhanced her people skills in putting people at ease in the dental surgery. She is gentle, great with children and those who just really hate going to the dentist! Having enjoyed life as a dentist in the UK, Tiffany and her husband moved to the Sunshine Coast for the sunny weather and coastal lifestyle in 2011, and have never looked back!
Dr. Chan has a great interest in extractions and wisdom teeth removal and has recently completed an intensive oral surgery course with maxillofacial surgeons in Cambodia. She aims to provide wisdom teeth extraction services on a regular basis on top of general dentistry. Tiffany is keen to continually improve as a dentist by regularly attending conferences and courses to keep herself updated on new treatment options. She strives to help patients realise that dentistry is not always as scary as people think. She is particularly passionate about helping patients gain confidence when receiving treatment, so that they can benefit from the modern treatment options available to them. When not doing dentistry, Dr Chan loves being in the great outdoors, fishing, travelling and occasionally dabbles in cooking.
