This week GC&M News is paying tribute to the hard working parents and teachers of the local area who have clearly put some hard yards in creating lots of excitement around, and costumes for, Book Week celebrations. While the stories sent in from the most of the local schools focused on the enthusiasm that the kids have for dressing up, I have a sneaky suspicion that the teachers seem to really enjoy the opportunity as well. Along with the kids photos there were also lots of great photos of teachers in costume, including the one on the front cover from Landsborough State School, where the Cat in the Hat is obviously very popular. I have to say I thought it was a rather creative approach by teacher Lyndal Callan, who didn’t let a 'sizeable baby bump' stop her getting into the spirit of dressing up – she just incorporated it into the costume as Thing 2 from the Cat in the Hat. As an avid reader, it got me wondering, if Book Week had been around in the 70s when I was at primary school, how stressful would it have been for my mum to come up with something creative each year! Great job mums, on creating such wonderful costumes and keeping the passion for kids' books alive! Regards,

Local News Fight against quarry steps up The battle to stop a hard rock quarry development at Beerburrum continues, with a community protest group formed to coordinate their efforts. The Beerburrum Action Group has created a Facebook page of the same name, to link like-minded locals and provide a forum for communicating with each other. Next on their agenda is a parliamentary petition sponsored by Member for Buderim and Queensland One Nation leader, Steve Dickson. Group spokesperson Christine Smith explained that the petition in protest against the proposed Barro Group development on the Beerburrum Woodford Road is because there are residential areas within 1.2km from the extension of the proposed site, despite it being currently gazetted as a ‘gravel pit’. “Residents are concerned with the impact from machinery, but more so by a projected 150 truck movements daily through the historic Beerburrum township and Glasshouse District,” she said. “The group also believes that the road infrastructure is unable to cope with the major increase in vehicular movement in an area that is already under stress. “And overall there appears to be no benefit for the community for this quarry development proposal to be approved. “We are urging Sunshine Coast Council to reject the proposal in their role of representing and supporting their local voters, residents and ratepayers.”

The action group is also hoping local State Member Andrew Powell will emulate his Gold Coast colleague Ros Bates MP who fought alongside a community group there to stop a Boral quarry from proceeding. “The Beerburrum Action Group is seeking that same support from both our local parliamentarian (Andrew Powell) and our council representative (Rick Baberowski), to match the strong support that Gold Coast/ Reedy Creek residents received from their representatives,” said Christine. When asked whether the group can rely on his support, Andrew Powell said that he will always strongly represent the views of Glass House residents. “That’s why, within 24 hours of being contacted regarding the quarry, I wrote to the Minister for Main Roads alerting him to the transport concerns of the Beerburrum community. “That’s why I held a community mobile office, alongside Cr Baberowski, to discuss the concerns of locals and the ways those concerns can influence the DA process. “What I won’t do, though, is make promises or statements that mislead the community or create false hope – that is neither fair, right or responsible.”

State Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment Curtis Pitt was in Maleny last week to announce that The Water and Carbon Group had received a $1.5 million boost from the Palaszczuk Government’s Business Development Fund. The company designs, builds and operates innovative hybrid wastewater treatment systems across Australia with clients including Unitywater. Mr Pitt made the funding announcement while visiting Maleny where The Water and Carbon Group is working with council on an effluent disposal forest as part of a wider upgrade to the Maleny sewage treatment plant. “The Water and Carbon Group’s systems integrate engineering with natural ecological processes, such as wetlands, to deliver low energy, low cost, environmentally friendly wastewater treatment solutions,” Mr Pitt said. “The Fund’s investment will assist the company in establishing and operating 10 pilot treatment systems to do demonstration projects on site with key clients, providing a tangible showcase of the systems in action. “This will allow them to create employment, research and training opportunities in the South East corner and regional Queensland, as well as develop contract opportunities for other Queensland companies.” “These investments in Queensland businesses which are showing the way in their fields come from across industry sectors ranging from

Patrols continue in forestry on Roys Road
Mooloolah Telstra woes revisited
Following on from a community meeting organised by Cr Jenny McKay and held at Mooloolah last month highlighting the inadequate internet and mobile phone services available in the Mooloolah Valley area, it seems that some progress has been made. James Blackmore, Acting Area General Manager Metro/South East for Telstra, said at the meeting that he would keep the community updated on the exchange upgrade and other issues, and he has recently briefed Cr McKay on the latest. “The upgrade planned for August is going ahead,” he said. “We are on track for the end of August with spare ADSL2+ ports for new services as well as congestion relief for approximately 250 customers. I am told that this may not relieve all congestion in Mooloolah so we are also looking at the potential for spare transmission capacity serving the region that we can use for Mooloolah.” One issue raised at the meeting was the school. “The Telstra account management team have been in contact with the Department of Education’s (DoE) Central IT Group and I understand from the school that their next step is to request more capacity from the DoE,” said Mr Blackmore. “We will continue to check in with the school periodically to see if there is anything we can do to help them move this along.
A recent speed test at Mooloolah “I note that the upgrades in Mooloolah are part of a series of ADSL upgrades Telstra is making in the region. Customers in the areas of Elimbah, Beerburrum, Beerwah, Glass House Mountains, Landsborough, Peachester, Conondale, Maleny and Witta have all benefited from these upgrades in the past 12 months and there is more to come.” On the matter of the patchy mobile phone network, Mr Blackmore said that new 3G/4GX services are being deployed in the area, but not in Mooloolah. “The Maleny-Kenilworth Road base station, between Conondale and Kenilworth is expected to be on air in 2018,” he said. “I understand that Mooloolah does not feature on the Department of Communications mobile blackspot database as a priority location for the next round of Mobile Blackspot funding at this stage, but sites at nearby Beerwah and Glass House Mountains do.” You can keep up-to-date by joining the Facebook page ‘Mooloolah Internet’ or come along to the October 5 Mooloolah community breakfast meeting – from 7.30am at Kenny’s cafe – where Telstra staff will be attending.
HQPlantations would like to remind the public that the areas on the south eastern side of Roys Road at Beerwah, which were closed in February this year for harvesting, site preparation and replanting, remain closed. Due to unseasonably dry weather, replanting has been postponed until there is adequate rainfall, however 50,000 seedlings will be planted by hand in the cleared areas. These seedlings will require time to become established before the area will be reopened to lawful public access when operations are completed sometime in 2019. In the meantime, police and forest officers continue to patrol the area and fines under the Forestry Act for not complying with the closure range from $252 to $1260.

Community Grants success for Glass House Member for Glass House Andrew Powell is thrilled that Round 93 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) delivered another $231,719 in grants to the Glass House electorate. The fund provides one-off grants to Queensland not-for-profit community organisations, with revenue sourced from gaming taxes. Andrew said the Glass House electorate has secured over $200,000 in each of the last two rounds and encourages community groups who need assistance to apply for a GCBF grant. Groups in Glass House can contact Andrew’s office at glass.house@parliament.qld.gov. au and request him to act as a referee in their applications. Montville historic shelter up for demolition The Razorback Park shelter in Montville is to be demolished, with no likely plans for it to be replaced. Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay announced on social media that advanced rot has been found in five of the shelter’s posts, with one totally detached from the slab at the base. There is also fascia damage, large cracks in the slab, and the gutters are damaged and full of debris. “Officers are looking at either a replacement shelter or decommission,” explained Cr McKay.
“There has been discussion to remove and not replace it as the Village Green would be adequate for this, although this is to be confirmed. “Scope of works includes discussions with officers, myself and all relevant stakeholders regarding a way forward for this project, i.e. whether to decommission or replace. “The project is not up for construction until 2019.” According to a 2009 council cultural heritage background study, the site was well known by the 1920s as a scenic vantage point.

Community News Club honours past committee members
The Maleny Rangers Football Club committee is excited to name two new awards in honour of the club's founding presidents. John Gibson and Joyce Newton were presidents of the senior and junior clubs respectively when the clubs amalgamated to create the Maleny Rangers Soccer Club in 1995. This allowed the club to grow to over 250 members today and, with the establishment of the football academy, the club continues to grow. Joyce Newton John Gibson lived in Maleny for 37 years and generously gave his time to numerous community organisations. With John’s passing in 2017, the ‘John Gibson Memorial Award’ is awarded to a club member who makes a significant contribution to progressing the football culture of the club. Maleny Apex Club is proud to present their annual ‘Paws of Thunder’ dog races on the main oval at Maleny Showgrounds this Sunday, September 10, from 8am. Featuring a fun day out of dog racing and events for canine companions of all ages (and their humans!), the day aims to celebrate the contribution of dogs to Maleny’s farming past, and bring together the community. Proceeds from the day go to help towards the cost of sending every Maleny High School student to the two-day driver education program, ‘Roadcraft’. The program offers a terrific family fun day out with loads of activities for dogs and humans alike, with registrations taken on the day. Hospital Auxiliary ready to celebrate Contributed by Lyn Mihalic The Maleny Hospital will be holding a fete on Saturday October 14 to commemorate the coming together of the community in 1917 to build a hospital as a way of honouring soldiers who served in World War 1 and also to serve local needs. The hospital served the community well until in the 1980s, then a new modern brick structure was built across the road from the original hospital and was officially opened in October 1987. Having a hospital from 1917 to 1987 and now through to 2017 is more than a good reason for the community to come together to celebrate.
While the event will be a hospital event, the Maleny Hospital Auxiliary have stepped forward and will be providing morning and afternoon tea and will set up a White Elephant Stall selling plants, cakes, preserves and all that will make the stall enticing. The Ladies are also looking forward to providing the catering for the Maleny Garden Club’s 65th Anniversary Lunch and Friendship Day at the Maleny Showground Pavilion with special guests coming from many gardening clubs from outside of the area. We know that the Garden Club will see to it that this event showcases the beauty that comes from our gardens and the friendship that exudes a wonderful inclusiveness that Maleny is renowned for.
Safety training for farm workers Queensland’s agricultural industries are working together to help farm businesses reduce risks and increase efficiency and compliance through a series of one-day workshops across the state. The Workplace Essentials workshops, funded by the Queensland Government and coordinated through the Queensland Agriculture Workforce Network, will focus on providing farm employers and team leaders with practical information and resources to enhance workplace health and safety and people management skills. in profile Adam Russell Officer in Charge at Maleny Ambulance Station By Sonia Clark Recently when Lea was at the Maleny Ambulance Station taking a photo of Adam for another story, they got chatting and she quickly realised that Adam is definitely a man of many stories, and the enthusiasm he had for the founder of the Queensland Ambulance Service was such that we thought it would be an interesting story to share with the community. Back in 1981 when Adam was a junior ambulance officer at Toowoomba he first learned about the history of the Ambulance Service. When tasked with looking after the archive section of the station, Adam soon discovered that there was limited information about the service’s unassuming founder, Seymour Charles Warrian. Back in 1892 the idea of having a mobile civilian trained medical assistance team was completely unheard of. However after witnessing an accident at the Brisbane Exhibition where an injured rider was made to walk to assistance, military medic Seymour Warrian was motivated to canvas support to train community members in first aid response. Subsequently the City Ambulance Transport Brigade (CATB) was established on September 12, 1892. Patients were transported on foot and, as the service grew to include stations outside of Brisbane, it became known as the Queensland Ambulance (Service) Transport Brigade (QATB).
Adam is amazed that more people are not familiar with the story and life of Seymour – especially since he went on to also establish the service in New South Wales. “We idolise sports people and politicians and yet this guy is an absolute legend and unsung hero that no one has heard of. “He got the service up and running from nothing and spent his entire working life in pre-hospital care. With the legacy that he’s left it’s incredible that people don’t know his story,” said Adam. Interestingly though, as Adam trawled through the archives he discovered that, for the first five years of the running of the station, shoe leather was the greatest expense as there were no cars, and patients were pushed on stretchers back to hospitals! Around three years ago, Adam decided to kickstart a campaign to promote interest in the founding father of QAS with a project called ‘See More Seymour’. Starting off with raising internal interest within QAS, Adam is now keen to extend that recognition publicly.

“We have a long standing history here at QAS that is worthy of reflection and highlighting – we wouldn’t have the service we have today without the contribution of Seymour and that is definitely worthy of more recognition.” During Ambulance Week celebrations coming up in September there will be a big launch at the Brisbane Exhibition Grounds to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the service, with more details about the service’s beginnings to be highlighted. As a “burning personal crusade” for some time for Adam, he would love to see more public recognition and is hoping that future infrastructure projects around the state will consider naming buildings or public spaces after Seymour to commemorate his huge contribution to the essential service we all take for granted today.

Sculpture on the Edge
Back for its seventh year, the contemporary 3D exhibition ‘Sculpture on the Edge’ is set to wow audiences again from September 29 - October 23 with 40 sculptures included in the exhibition. Set against the stunning rainforest backdrop of Spicers Tamarind Retreat, this year approximately 30 artists will have their work showcased as finalists with the chance for them to share in $9,000 cash prizes. Many of the artists are Hinterland locals and the exhibition is a wonderful opportunity to experience the work of both established and emerging talent. Maleny based retired lawyer and artist Trevor Irvine (pictured left) will be entering his work for the first time this year. His interest in painting originated from work he was doing to support his disabled daughter. With no prior knowledge or experience, over the last eight years he has developed a passion for painting. Over the past four years Trevor has developed an interest in 3D sculpture in wood. “It is very satisfying to see a shape emerge from a block of wood, at the same time being able to conceptualise in 3D is very challenging,” he explains. This year, once again, Yanni van Zijl is a finalist after winning second prize last year with 'The Point is...' (pictured below), an installation which featured a chandelier made from recycled milk bottles. Her pieces this year will also have a strong focus on environmental challenges and will be constructed from found items. She will also team up with Pam Walpole as Art forARTsake, where they will present a sculpture that will also challenge our views on the struggle for our earth. they like skateboarding. No basketball hoop or BMX track for example... have they been asked? In this day and age they could be provided with a covered meeting place with a sound system out of reach from vandals but accessible to play music from phones, etc. Dog walking can be a contentious issue, with dogs walked off leash where they are supposed to be on. But, though Maleny has a huge dog population, there is still no fenced dog exercise area. There are probably 100 dogs to every golfer! The reason these provisions have not been made, in my opinion, is that there is no organised group for them, as there is for golf or horses. Frances Harper Maleny

Re: Politician's pictures
Steven Lang (GC&M News, August 23) makes a good point on the proliferation of a politician’s pictures along our roads. Once it was expected that an aspiring representative or sitting member would bring his face to your door, hear your concerns and take them to their level of government as your voice. Now it appears it is a ‘pick me’ scenario that has no substance and only facial recognition of them as voters' guide. I am sure residents are looking for more than box ticking in their consideration of a representative. I sympathize with Jane Hyde, last week, who cannot find a decent picnic spot in the Maleny Precinct. It is not only picnickers and young children who have been overlooked but also teenagers and dog owners. We have been hearing a lot about ‘Fake News’ lately. I’ve just discovered ‘Fake Advertising’. Having a home related job to be done (which was beyond my ability to do), I turned to my trusty GC&M News, flicked to the ‘A to Z of Trades & Services’ section, and found the listing of those who offered their expertise to do the job I needed doing. I worked my way through the short list, starting with the first listed, rang the mobile number, and left a voicemail message as the caller was not available to answer. I then waited for several days for a return call. When I didn’t get a call back, I worked my way through others on the list by calling the number, leaving a message and waiting for a call back. Zero responses! Here is a word of advice to those paying good money to advertise their services: why not change your voice mail message to say that you have too much work / aren’t interested, or whatever excuse you want to give? Or (and this might sound a bit radical) maybe just call back to discuss the service you have offered in your advert and to honour the invitation to leave a message so you could call back. Tree clearing
Last week I launched a petition demanding the Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, reverse his opposition to Labor’s proposed tree clearing laws. While door knocking the electorate over the past couple of months, I have found that people have consistently raised very strong views about the need to protect our environment and native wildlife. We live in one of the most beautiful parts of Australia, here in the Hinterland, and that drives in people a genuine love of the bush. The irony is that our local member, Andrew Powell, was the worst Environment Minister Queensland has

ever seen. As Campbell Newman’s environment hitman, Andrew Powell dismantled Queensland’s treeclearing laws and unleashed the bulldozers. As a direct result of Mr Powell’s reckless actions, since 2013 we have seen: more than 1 million hectares of bush likely destroyed; an area twice the size of the Glass House electorate cleared each year; millions of native animals killed and displaced; and the Great Barrier Reef put at further risk from sediment run-off. To add insult to injury, Andrew Powell voted against Labor’s tree clearing bill when it came to parliament in 2016. Labor’s bill proposed strong, sensible vegetation management laws. But true to form, Mr Powell put LNP politics before the welfare of our environment. Now Queensland finds itself with the worst deforestation record in the developed world. And late last month the World Wildlife Fund released a new report that estimates tree clearing in Queensland has killed 68 million animals between mid-2013 and mid-2015. This disgraceful destruction must stop before it’s too late. That’s why I’m giving locals the opportunity to voice their opinion through the petition I’ve launched. My hope is that Andrew Powell will finally listen to the people of Glass House and help us stop the bulldozers. Brent Hampstead Candidate for Glass House

Whatever happened to the re-instatement of the Flashing School Lights at the Glass House School that were removed some four years ago and replaced with the static signs? Tips that could save you thousands on your home loan Around 17 per cent of Australian mortgage holders are facing some level of mortgage stress, according to Roy Morgan research. Even if you’re comfortably meeting your repayments, some savings here and there won’t do any harm. If you could cut down your mortgage repayments, you might be able to afford more of life’s little extras – dinners out with your partner, or home renovations. If you’re looking shave some money off your home loan, here are a few tips that could help. 1. Make extra repayments. Additional weekly payments of as little as $25 on top of your usual mortgage repayments could save you a tonne. On 14
an average loan of $250,000 at an interest rate of 7.5 per cent, such a small amount could save you as much as $80,000 in interest and could also mean you’ll pay off your loan five years sooner. Use our Extra Repayment Calculator to estimate how much you could save from making additional repayments. 2. Restructure your home loan. Restructuring involves changing your home loan, either by negotiating a better deal with your existing lender, or switching lenders. It can enable you to take advantage of a lower interest rate or gain access to flexible extras, but can come with its own fees and risks. By restructuring, you might choose
to get a redraw facility that will let you deposit extra money into your mortgage, reducing both your interest and the length of your loan. An offset account – a savings account linked to your loan – can also help you save on the amount of interest you pay. 3. Take advantage of government concessions and grants. First home owner grants are available in all Australian states to give young Australians a helping hand, along with a number of other concessions such as stamp duty reductions and incentives for buying off-the-plan or vacant land. Look into what’s available in your state to find out how much you could save.

This year’s Street Party in Beerwah will have a strong focus on recycling and responsible waste management. We are seeking volunteers to help us with this for two hours on the night. School News Book week celebrates 'Escape to Everywhere'

Contributed by Sandy Johnson No one was asking, “Where’s Wally?” at Glasshouse Christian College’s Primary Book Parade. There were lots of Wallies, plenty of princesses, stacks of super heroes, plus a huge assortment of characters from favourite books across the ages. Themes were big among the staff this year with Primary Assistants taking the prize for their costume of Max by Bob Graham and the Learning Enhancement Team coming as The Magic School Bus. This year’s theme of ‘Escape to Everywhere’ was broad enough to encompass most books but the Library staff dressed specifically as famous real life people who had escaped or helped others escape from difficult experiences and places. The Primary Book Parade was a culmination of a week of events celebrating all things literary. Middle and Senior Character Day was held on Monday, Read and Relax Day was Wednesday, a guest story teller came on Thursday and the Book Fair was on all week.

Contributed by Kylie Merola This year has been designated as ‘The Year of Reading’ at Landsborough State School, with a major focus on developing reading skills and students discovering the joy of reading. So, with the recent Book Week, it was a perfect opportunity for students to celebrate authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) reading for pleasure. Students and staff were encouraged to dress up as a character from their favourite book and everyone, including the teachers, enthusiastically showed off their creative costumes and shared their favourite books throughout the day. Contributed by Lyn Rayner and Vicki Page The Peachester School Community has always placed a high value on its students becoming competent and confident readers, which is achieved through the use of successful reading programs and highlighting the importance of parents as partners in teaching by reading to and with their children. Our Book Week Parade and the Awards Premier’s Reading Challenge, with 100% participation rate, are very popular events in the school calendar. Our 2017 NAPLAN results in Reading are again worthy of celebration with 100% of our Year 3 and 5 students achieving above the National Minimum. 38.5% of our Year 3 students are placed in the top band of achievement compared to the national average of 28.4% and the state average of 23.4%. Of our Year 5 students, 75% made greater gains in reading over the past two years relative to like students across the nation.

Book Week at Glenview State School is always a highly anticipated event with staff and students coming together to celebrate the importance of books and their love of reading. Along with the special parade held to show off all the wonderful costumes, a highlight of the day was the hilarious fun-filled movie starring Amelie and Ella the staff at Glenview reading – with some big laughs, especially from the students seeing some of the staff ‘reading’ in rather interesting places! The whole school parade featured some very imaginative and interesting characters, with some brilliant ‘travels to far off places’ such as Hogwarts, the jungle, backpacking, outer space and more.

The school was lucky enough to have a special guest author, Pat Flynn, visit the school. Pat writes realistic fiction with a dose of humour for 8-16 year olds and he talked to the students, encouraging their creative Mad Hatter writing. Maddy from Year 6 The staff and students went above and beyond in dressing up to represent many characters from many different types of books from fantasy, sci-fi and animations to technology, sport, fiction, nonfiction and a whole lot more.

Contributed by Debbie Ives As part of the traditional Book Week celebrations at Beerwah State School the Beerwah Library ran a competition with the lower school doing a colouring in, and the upper grades making a diorama depicting the magical places a book can take you. The winners of the competition were: Prep, 1, 2 and 3 – Lexan, Chloe, Peppa and Summer; Years 4, 5 and 6 – Jemma, Georgia and Dakota (pictured). The excited students dressed as characters from books and proudly paraded around morning parade in a show for their fellow students and family members. Most staff members got in on the fun, with appearances from the Paper Bag Princess and Jack and Jill.

State Member for Caloundra Hospital cover should support our growing population
I was recently asked, how do we provide sufficient hospital cover for the people of Caloundra and the Hinterland? Critically, we need to understand the facts. We have an increasing population, an ageing population and many who suffer from a chronic disease. These facts alone produce a strong argument for the Caloundra Hospital ‘Urgent Care Centre’ being opened 24 hours per day, 7 days a week and not merely 12 hours per day as it is. Why? Well, I certainly accept that the public hospital at Kawana will treat the most seriously injured or ill patients – called category 1 or category 2. These patients may have serious road or work related injuries. No doubt Kawana is the safest place for them. But what of those who attend the Emergency Department at Kawana who are not so ill or injured? Where could they go for treatment, day or night? Consider also, data released by the State Government shows, at the public hospital in Kawana, the percentage of people who lie on a stretcher outside the Emergency Department for longer than 30 minutes. In April it was 21%, May 21% and June 25%. These are big figures and this means the paramedics stayed with them rather than being back on the road. This highlights Kawana is a very busy hospital. Importantly when you’re off your stretcher and you need a bed, you should be in that bed within four hours. Yet this only happened in 43% of cases in May, 49% in June and 42% in July at Kawana for the most ill or seriously injured. So until they are in a bed they are somewhere within the Emergency Department. Again this is evidence of a busy hospital. We know the Kawana Public Hospital is the best place for those with the most urgent needs. We also know that many other people attend an Emergency Department, day or night. It is these locals who could attend Caloundra Hospital, alleviating the strain on the Public Hospital in Kawana. The human body gets sick at any time. It can’t be controlled by an on/off switch, particularly so with children. It just makes common sense that we leave Kawana to do what it does best and hospitals around the area, including Caloundra, can assist to alleviate the incredible strain and provide a better outcome for patients instead of them having to wait and wait and wait, at Kawana. Don’t forget an ageing population, an increasing population and chronic disease.

Questions you should consider asking when you employ a Registered Acupuncturist should include: Are you registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA) and Chinese Medicine Board of Australia (CMBA)? Henry & Co When Landsborough locals Stephen Clark and Brad Mahony decided to open up Henry & Co, they knew they wanted to bring something different to what was currently on offer locally. They also wanted to be part of expanding Landsborough as a destination that entices people to leave the hustle and bustle and enjoy a relaxing day away from the Coast. They opened the doors in February and now, more than six months on, things are moving along nicely, and their mix of offerings has even expanded to include an in-house florist, and the coming weeks will see their juice and smoothie bar completed. Being September this month, they are focusing on their ‘Spring Menu’ which includes some of their regular favourites tweaked slightly as well as two great new salads, ‘The Spring Garden’ and the ‘Superfood Salad’ which sound great, particularly the coconut poached chicken breast in the Spring Garden. Brownie and I don’t often get the chance to head out of the office for lunch, however we are very
much fans of breakfast out, particularly on the weekend and, very early on when Henry & Co opened, I became a fan of their ‘Smashed Avo’ breakfast. I reckon they must have had a special secret ingredient or maybe it is just the perfect combination of fetta and mountain dukkah from Maleny and their lemon juice dressing – it all added up to a total winner for me. However last weekend I went out on a limb and tried their purple toast – which is sourdough toast with Egyptian beetroot, poached egg and avocado dipped in pistachio dukkah. So now I have to add that to my favourites list! Brownie is a fan of a big breakfast, so he likes their free range breakfast that includes your basics – bacon, eggs, grilled tomato and toasted sourdough – and can be added to. However, in the name of research, he gave the ‘Breakfast Burrito’ a try, which he gave the thumbs up to! And the great thing is, if you love a cooked breakfast but don’t always like an early start, Brad makes breakfasts from 7am - 2pm each day, and they
serve from the lunch menu until 3pm. Landsborough is already known as the Heritage Town, so it is great to see that Stephen and Brad have taken the 100-year-old ‘Henry Dyer’ building on Cribb Street, and created a very modern, open, light filled, welcoming environment for their customers. Henry & Co is great location for enjoying an extended meal and catching up with friends or having a meeting, or to even drag out the laptop and do some work (yes, they have great free wifi), or if you have the time, to do some people watching as the world goes by outside. Being located across from the train station they also cater for their customers who are on the run, who may need to race in for a quick coffee, drink or to grab something to eat from their ‘Good to Go’ range. They are open from 7am - 5pm, every day of the week and they look forward to welcoming you to Henry & Co.

A French film starring a remarkably young-looking Isabelle Huppert is to be screened in the Maleny Community Centre by Maleny Film Society on Saturday September 9 at 7.15pm (doors open for dinner at 6pm – catering by Wild Rocket). Entitled L’Avenir (Things to Come), this is the latest film by acclaimed 36-year-old director Mia Hansen-Love (Father of My Children), whose pivot for all her stories seems to be the passage of time. Middle-aged philosophy professor Nathalie is married to another philosophy professor, who announces at breakfast that he is leaving her for a younger woman. This critical moment in Nathalie’s life coincides with the death of her mother, the loss of her job, and a change in editorial policy at the publishing house responsible for her books: a gigantic threat to her creativity. Nathalie is forced to re-brand more than her writing, and waiting in the wings is young ex-protegee Heinz (played by Andre Marcon) who lives in an anarchists’ country retreat. Hansen-Love turns a fairly predictable tale of sadness and romance into an examination of time – detailing the heroine’s progress towards real freedom. The plot is based on Hansen’s own mother’s crises as a Parisian academic. Hansen-Love began screen life as an actress but has achieved major awards as a director. From the Heart of Gold Gympie film festival comes a Netherland animation entitled Bingo, to round out the evening’s program.

Zucchini
Every veggie patch should have zucchinis growing. They are such a versatile fruit (yes, they have seeds so they are strictly speaking a fruit and not a vegetable) in the kitchen... from salads to kebabs to chocolate zucchini brownies (hint hint Madam Editor). The four main types are the basic dark green (like Black Jack), a light green skinned Lebanese zucchini, yellow zucchini (such as Gold Rush) and button squash (either green or yellow). There are others, but these are the most common. A couple of basics first. To grow them from seed, the soil needs to be over 21 degrees C for them to germinate. It’s getting to that now... before now, the night temperatures keep the soil temperature too low. I grow them from seed in Spring, Summer and Autumn and from bought seedlings in Winter. They are susceptible to fruit fly – so from now on you will need to protect them. That could be by spraying, exclusion bags or fine netting. I find that Lebanese zucchinis tend to resist fruit fly better than the others – so i grow mostly this variety. Zucchini have separate male and female flowers. The males have a yellow bit covered in pollen and the females have a yellow bit that needs pollinating... but the giveaway is that they have a small zucchini attached. If you don’t have an abundance of bees you will need to assist the pollinating by hand. Just break off the male flower, strip off the yellow petals and dab the boys bit onto the girls bit to transfer the pollen. If the flowers are not pollinated, the fruit won’t set properly and it will just stay small and rot. I check and pollinate mine each morning, as the flowers are generally open for just one day. You will need a couple of plants to ensure that you have a supply of male flowers whenever the female flowers are ready. New plants start growing male flowers first, then females and males, then as they age only females. Also be aware that cooler weather means more female flowers but less male flowers; warmer weather tends to turn the balance the other way. Zucchinis are susceptible to powdery mildew, which will severely affect the leaves if it’s bad enough. I tend not to get too worried. I water them in the morning so that the leaves dry out during the day and I cut off and bin the older leaves or the ones that get mildewy. Foliar feeding with a seaweed solution will help keep mildew at bay by strengthening the leaves natural protective abilities; and some swear by using old milk watered down as a treatment spray. Pick your fruit when they are a manageable size – but watch them as they do grow quickly and can become trombone-like marrows before you know it. Use a knife or secateurs to cut the stem of the fruit – breaking them off will only lead to fungal infections in the stem of the plant which could then be fatal. They are roaming plants, so ensure you have some room for them to wander a bit – but they’re not as wild as cucumbers or pumpkins. I like to grow then on the edge of my raised beds, then they grow over and down on top the paths and don’t cover up precious soil space.

The Friends of Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens and Native Plants Sunshine Coast will team up with USC researchers to present a ‘Natives naturally for your garden – native plants and native bees’ event to be held on September 9 from 9.30am - 3pm at Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens Art and Ecology Centre. This free family-friendly event will feature activities, workshops on making native bee nests, talks on the ‘Manuka’ honey industry, plants that attract native bees and ways to provide habitats in your garden for different species of bee. Sharing their expertise in native bees of all kinds will be Beerburrum’s Ann Ross of Hive Haven, horticulturalist Joan Dillon and USC researchers Rachele Wilson and Linda Pappadarlo. Rachele Wilson with “Some homes already have hives for stingless native stingless bees native bees, but we also need to replace lost habitat for solitary species,” says Rachele. “They nest in various kinds of small spaces that are very easy to create in the smallest backyards – even in units. So we can be very creative in personalising our bee nests, and the Natives Naturally workshops will show families how we can do it for fun, even for free.” As well as workshops and talks, the event will offer sales of native plants, free guided walks, honey tasting and displays, plus expert talks on native bee hives and plants to use in home gardens for attracting bees and other native wildlife. Black She-oak Allocasuarina littoralis Allocasuarina littoralis, otherwise known as the Black She-oak, is an erect conical shaped tree which has dark fissured bark which looks black at certain times of the year. This fast growing tree is a dioecious plant, meaning it has separate male and female trees. The male tree bears showy red flowers in spring and the female plant has clusters of small fruiting cones which hold the winged seeds. This species can grow up to 12m on favourable sites. Growing on a wide range of sites, it prefers full sun to light shade. Black She-oaks produce excellent timber for a wide variety of uses including wood turning and even burning, as they produce very little waste. In the past, its wood has been used for tool handles, yokes, furniture, farm buildings and roof shingles. They make an excellent wind break and the wind sounds wonderful as it sighs through their branches and needles. Allocasuarina littoralis is one of the favourite food trees for the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo. Most properties would benefit from planting a couple of these hardy charismatic trees.

Julie has recently held the position of rector of the Chermside Anglican Parish. She is the daughter of the Reverend Bob and Christine Woolner of Kawana, and has recently married Peter Worrall. Julie was commissioned at St Andrew’s Anglican Church at Caloundra by our Northern Regional Bishop Jeremy Greaves on Friday, August 25, where a large gathering of family, friends and parishioners celebrated her appointment as rector and welcomed Julie and Peter to the parish. Julie was ordained to the priesthood in 2005 at St John’s Cathedral. Julie enjoys the challenge of ministry, seeking to find where God is leading us both individually as well as corporately. She says while not all aspects of ministry are ‘fun’, she like the diversity and opportunities in ministry to grow and develop, and to learn from others’ gifts and experiences. Julie says that after six happy years of ministry at Chermside, she looks forward to new opportunities in this great part of the Diocese. She recognizes that the recent developments of Aura, and around Landsborough and Beerwah, will continue to change the dynamics of the area, and that we as a community will need stamina, persistence and fresh ideas to meet this challenge and share God’s love with others. Thus, we pray, for Julie as she commences her ministry among us all, and that we as a community of faith, will support her in these endeavors.
Beerwah CWA marks 70 years
The Beerwah CWA Branch is celebrating their 70 year milestone this year and recently the doors of the hall were opened to all for a fun and casual morning of chat, morning tea, and an opportunity to taste a traditional CWA scone. The morning was well attended with members from the community, and visiting members from Maleny and Caloundra branches. On display were historical articles and photos, as well as the beautifully sewn '70th' wall hanging made by one of the branch’s more creative members, Julie. The CWA is an active community of women. The Beerwah Branch comes together every first Monday of each month. If you are looking for some fun, keen to learn new skills, and help those less fortunate in our community, then please come along! Contributed by Brenda Briese It's been rather quiet this week so only one game to report on, Thursday August 31 (another month disappeared!). We played a Stableford round with 52 players. Winner for Division 1 was Vikki Bartel with a great score of 40 pts, and runner up was Helen Lewis on 39 pts. Division 2 Winner was Fay Raven on 39 pts and runner up was Leigh Elks on 37 pts. All very commendable scores with NTPs (2) Marie Oxlade, (5) Barb Drury, (16) Karen Kemp, (18) Sonia Kenway and the BRD went to 32 pts. Good golfing to all.

Contributed by Roger Bonhomme Warm and sunny conditions greeted the field in Wednesday’s medley Stableford and some excellent cards were returned. Mackay visitor Kevin Dalton won A Grade with 41 points, edging out Mal Bosnjak by a point. In B grade Jeff Wilson won by a shot on 39 from Murray Schipp. Lyle May (41) squeezed out Julie Bevan on a countback to win C grade. NTP: 2 - Graham Pallett, 5/16- Wayne Max, 18 – Geoff Williamson. On Saturday Sean Daines fired an outstanding 69 off the stick to win the A grade September monthly medal. His 70 nett (he’s off +1) pipped Craig Farr by a shot. Ross McCormack (68) beat Ted Hope by a shot whilst Jim McGory (71) beat Steve Robertson by two to win C grade. NTP: 2 - Warren Jones, 5 – Shane Eastell, 16 – Dan O’connor, 18 – Caig Farr. Parts of the course will look like a construction site over the next few weeks whilst a new dam is built to the left of 15 and a practice chipping/ bunker area is built behind the 1st tee.

Contributed by Ken Barker In social play on Thursday, Helen Andrews and Ken Barker 19 beat Kath Smith and Frances Harper 7, while Vince Carbery 15 defeated Nick Cram 9. The open championship has now been decided. On Friday, Donna Manning 21 was successful against Nick Cram 13. On Sunday, Donna continued her winning ways to score 23-13 against Vince. Donna is now a welldeserved open and second division champion. Congratulations. Also on Sunday, Helen Andrews 14 fought well to down Kath 11; and Ken Barker struggled to beat a vastly improved Robert Elliot 11-9. All eyes are now turned to regaining the Fitchen Trophy which is to be played next Saturday, September 16. This is a doubles competition against Nambour Club with a trophy donated by Lew Fitchen, a past member. We have not won it for a few years. 2017 is the time. The club meeting is this Saturday, September 9. Club play days are Thursday and Sunday at 1 for 1.30pm. Saturday mornings at 8am there are lessons for beginners on the courts in the Showgrounds. Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Once again Maroochydore TTs were the deserved winners of the day. However, Witta Wagtails put up a good fight and thoroughly enjoyed a great day of tennis. Thank you to Janet, Suzie, Gerry and Sonia. The Whistlers played at Yandina against All Sorts. Good weather and long rallies as usual. We had ups and downs, and lots of running again. We're bit short on games but had a good day. Score was 32-
40 games, 3-5 sets. Team was Liz Mellish, Brenda Warner, Aki Lepper and Maree Hooley. The Wildcats were at home to Maroochydore Blue Bells. It was another hard fought battle. Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Jim King The week began well with our club hosting teams from Kilcoy, Woodford, Mapleton and Pelican Waters for our monthly jackpot pairs. Thanks to all our members who attended to play or to assist with the afternoon tea. We were pleased to have local winners – Curly Petersen and Les Bennett – with runners up from Woodford, Geoff Lacey and Ray Auer. The raffle winners were Alan Boag, Bill Edwards and Ray Auer. Tuesday was a quiet day for some social bowls but numbers were up again on Wednesday night for barefoot bowls. For a change, bowlers were drawn into pairs rather than the usual format of fours. Winners were David and Brad; Lyn and Jackie; Ian and Min; Gary and Laurie and Ray and Henry. Touchers went to Ian, Paul,
Harold and David. Money board winner was Ian Chatterton and the lucky draw went to Laurie Fawns. It was pleasing to see sixteen bowlers competing in the scroungers competition. Winners were Scott Alexander, Relma Godfrey, Heather Snell, Ian Chatterton and Joe Walters. The money board went to Jim King and the young and lucky Joe Walters was present when his number was drawn in the members draw for the Brouhaha ‘dinner for two’ prize. This week the club will be well represented at Mapleton on Monday by Miles Allen and Tom Ukola and at Kilcoy on Wednesday by Joe Walters, Relma Godfrey, Heather Snell and Alan Cook.
